i have a yamaha RGX, I know the newest version out is yamaha RGX A2...I guess its lesser quality than mine and they discontinued mine; I'll try to get a pic / description for it. Its really nice the action is real low and its a sweet transparent red...no dots on the fret board and a tribal symbol centered on the 12th fret. and nice smooth mahagondy neck.

also my friend pointed out to me that the lead guitarist from three days grace has my same guitar but in transparent black instead of red; which i thought was pretty neat.

I kind of want to be cliche and get a black gibson les paul. I like the look a lot; or a real good quality dean razor back prob dime bag darrel edition

same questions for you?

ya my 15W fender practice amp w/ built in distortions / effects just went to crap on me . the power light comes on but no sound...hmm...even tried different cables.

i'm looking at this 150W ibanezz amp on musiciansfriend, its like $380 but its got just fantastic reviews and people even said you don't even need any distortion pedals because the distortions so nice the only you will need is an effects processor because it only has delay i think.

the next amp i get i want to be able to play out w/ so i think ill get that one

I saw the ephi les pauls are great, they say cant really get a better guitar for the price

Yeah, I was about to post that chaz. Beat me to it...

And I play the guitar too, I have in Ibanez, don't know the brand though.

I'll look for a video of the guitar.

Ah here we go, exact same guitar, just black, and no that's not me, although I probably can play that.

Mine is black btw.

This is me:

My main guitars are an Ibanez Jem (signed by Steve Vai at G3 '03) and an ESP Ltd. MH-400

I have a custom built rack powered by a Mesa Triaxis and a 2:Ninety stereo power amp. I also have a G-major effects unit in there. All my sound banks are programmed by MIDI and controlled by a Behringer FCB1010 footboard.

I can't get the stupid youtube video to link up... so yeah double posted during edits. You caught me! haha

EDIT: Perhaps the video is too old, or perhaps it was because previously embedding was disabled for this video on youtube. Oh well, click the link!

I've got a camcorder now, so hopefully I will have more videos up before long. This was done with a shoddy webcam synced up to audio capture in WMM.

Thanks. She's a real joy to play. The body styling is almost identical to some PRS guitars I've seen. It's got active EMG81/85 pickups which give it a really solid sound. Compared to the Ibanez, it wasn't even very expensive!

**** man that is a sick *** set up... wow im impressed i've only been playing for a year but i play like a machine so i've gotten quite good quickly....

deffinitly plan on playing until i die as hard core as i have been. currently working on getting some buddies together to start practicing to do some covers out at some bars or something just for fun i would love that.

here is the amp i'm prob gunna get http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-TBX150R-Tone-Blaster-Xtreme-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=480945

reviews seem awesome and i havnt heard anything bad about ibanezz im going to try to find some pics about my guitar or just take some when i get home tonight

[Edit]: @snrm you don't really have to read notes you can tabs if you want thats what i am doing. i plan on learning theory / sheet music later

[Edit2]: Also the paint style of your bottom axe is almost just like mine except mines like cherry red main style w/ a darker red...actually the body is very very similar your pick ups look nice though I'll prob get some new ones for mine w/ tax returns along w/ the amp

Back when I was in high school I was bugging my parents to send me to Berklee. I used to play about 3 hours a day then. Needless to say, things didn't turn out the way I liked so I never got to go. Sometimes I'll still play for 8 hours in a day, but those days are more and more rare since work and school keep me far too busy, not to mention video games are a total distraction All in all, I don't think I'm as good as I used to be, but I could probably get back there with only a few weeks of hard practice.

Anyways, I've been playing for about 17 years, and teaching on and off for the last 3. The best advice I can give you is practice a LOT and go and get professional lessons. Even if you don't *think* you need them, do it! Find an instructor who is interested in teaching you what you want to learn (not what they think you should learn). You will save yourself years of learning by doing so, that I promise.

If shredding is your thing, you should check out a guy by the name of Rusty Cooley, if you don't already know him, that is. As far as I'm concerned, he is the godfather of modern shred and has nearly inhuman technical ability. If you're in the Texas area, he also gives lessons^^.

I can't comment much on the amp, since I'm no longer familiar with amps in that price range. But if you ever need buying advice for guitars or high end gear let me know.

ya when i first started playing i worked at this store by myself and it was slow as hell...i had my acoustic and i would literally play all day for 11 hours and probably even go home and play some more, so you can imagine why i progressed rather quickly..

currently i am taking lessons, the guys great but i don't just want to go in and be like teach me this song; although it is easier to learn from someone i'm more interested in techniques / scales.

ive had quite a few lessons where i learned that some times i tell him to teach me a song for fun but i've been messing around w/ the pentatonic and different patterns w/ that as well as learning the major scale and a dimished scale.

and your top guitar kind of looks like an ibanezz jem but black. I really need to keep consistantly giving it at least an hour of practice a night i usually always do but i work my *** off and like to chill w/ friends so ill usually get home and stay up later than i should practing.

working on sweep picking kind of now not as much as i should really hit the bricks on that.

and that name kind of rings a bell not really though, I know hes not the founder but bucket head shreds to what appears to be unrreal. i bet is were hes at and still practices at least 4 hours a day

It IS an Ibanez Jem! I don't think they make this model anymore, but it is a 7DBK. The body is contoured so that there's these bumps all over the surface. It feels like someone dripped hot wax all over it. Very cool finish! It's got screw head inlays for fret markers and DiMarzio Breed pickups instead of the Evolutions that come stock on the VWH (white /w gold hardware) model.

While I absolutely love the Jem, these days I favor the ESP simply because of the different sound of the pickups. The Breeds are very hot, but solo playing on the EMGs is much more fluid, so they are more forgiving.

Hey, there's some real guitarists here!

I'm mostly self-taught, no real skills yet.
I just have a cheap, old, black Squier Stratocaster with a small, discontinued Marshall AMP. I don't get to play much recently because of my long travel times and LBP.

I like to play mostly old tunes from the NES and SNES. I've tried my hand at playing some Punk Rock, but my gear and technique just don't give it a good sound. I also like to play some more traditional-sounding pieces, like the Tristram theme from Diablo 1 and a couple of other songs.

I have a friend who's taking guitar lessons. Hopefully when I get some more free time and get back into playing, he'll be able to hook me up with some good tips.

i taught myself for quite a while....and ya most lessons people offer are you go in and its like ok what song do you want to learn?

and that really doesn't do much although its easier to learn from a person you could look up tabs for a song on your own.

now at most my lessons i make him teach me technique and different scales so its working pretty well for me i feel im taking a lot from it.

also thanks for the reccommend but i think im going to get one big enough to play out with...for a practice i was going to get this fender one that lets you record your own riffs and plays it back in a loop also has preset drum / bass loops. so if you want you can record your own rythem riff to the drums / bass and make up your own lead parts...its pretty awesome

Well, i am a guitarist myself, only been playin' a little over a year though. I have a red strat (with a double back pickup, and a standard amp from them... and the connector cord is a little dead) but i do not play on it very often. The one i am one the most is my 30 year-old epiphone (guitars sound better with age i have heard) but yeah, simple, but hey its something. Like i said i have only been playing a little over a year, and am in a true guitar "class" (not lessons, but a class) but my favorite song to play would most likely be "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down. If you guys have any recognizable songs, that are easy to play but sound awesome, i am all ears, or any riffs for soloing, i am all ears.

Cheers!

I taught myself, some of my friends took guitar lessons and said it didnt do anything for them. Teaching yourself just requires patience, time and passion!

Then I would suggest your friends did not seek out an instructor well matched to them. Teaching somebody how to play the guitar is NOT teaching them how to play a song.

Unless you've already received formal instruction and know how to use your practice time wisely, I see no reason to assume you are "just as good without it". You can spend years practicing for hours and get less out of it than a casual player who is practicing the right things for the right reasons.

If your goal was to become a master shredder, you would be wise to seek out a teacher competent and interested in showing you:

- general right and left hand technique
- rhythm & rhythm theory
- legato technique
- arpeggios & sweep picking
- modal scales, exotic scales, symmetrical scales, pentatonics, etc.
- improvisation
- harmonic theory (understanding chord construction, and how to build chord progressions)
- how to choose and use gear to achieve desired sounds...

i like playing Sublime-Santeria ... Lynard Skynard-Simple Man....Green Day---When I come around (only when im playing w/ friends) Nirvana--In Bloom (is a really fun riff) Or like CKY--Sink into the under ground

[Edit]: ya thegide is absolutely right....my teacher has shown me legato.. i already knew about arpeggios and messed around w/ them and showed me a good sweep excersice...and what is a modal or exotic scale or symmetric i guess lol....

i also had mine just help me w/ improv...just been messing w/ the pentatonic and he showed me a couple different patterns w/ it..

he also showed me a diminished scale and a major scale.

Hey, CKY fan. Cool. I actually met them in Toronto in 2002 I think it was, during their IDR tour. Deron is a great guy to talk to... I was trying to get my CD book signed by everyone and had to chase down Jess at a strip club, at which point he stabbed the pen through one of the booklets because he was so hammered. Oh, and he kept my pen too... haha.

The stuff I'm currently into playing:
- Dream Theater
- Opeth
- Dethklok (no kidding, Brandon Small is a very talented player)
- Symphony X
- Angra
- All That Remains

Previously:
- Steve Vai
- Joe Satriani
- Old-school Metallica
- GnR
- Tool

and what is a modal or exotic scale or symmetric i guess lol....

You'll get into this stuff soon enough I think. Without confusing you too much I'll try to break it down into simple terms.

You know the difference between major and minor scales right? Well, these are part of a bigger picture. There are other types of major and minor scales with varying degrees of how "major" or "minor" they sound. Cumulatively, we call all of these scales the "diatonic scale" and they are all related**. Modal theory is essentially everything concerning all of the "degrees" of the diatonic scale.

**I will not explain this further just know that the Aminor scale contains the exact same notes as Cmajor and is therefore theoretically the same scale

Exotic scales generally refer to scales of exotic origin (geographically). Things like the Hirajoshi (japanese), Arabic, Neapolitan, or Phrygian major are generally grouped here. I don't consider harmonic minor (or melodic minor or pentatonics) to be "exotic" since their origins are in traditional harmonic theory.

Regarding symmetric scales.. Actually I had a typo. I meant to say synthetic scales (which can be symmetrical or non-symmetrical). Synthetic scales are hard to describe but let's just say they are patterened moreso than they are musical. Diminished scales, whole tone, and octatonic scales fall in this category.

Meh, I have a crap guitar. Need a new one...bad. I have a fake Strat. And it's RED too. So I feel like like I'm in the same group as the 10 year old girls who play Hannah Montana. I'll get around to posting a video of me playing on Youtube eventually but I don't have a camera so It'll be all audio and people will think I'm faking....BUT I'M NOOOOT!

I'm working on playing Sanitarium, it's easy enough. The songs I can play now are the Trooper, One, Sweet Child of Mine, The Unforgiven, and a couple other songs that I just kind of decided I wanted to play one day but never committed to.

I think my guitar is a Bullet Strat or something like that. Something cheap that was one hundred dollars....

thanks thegide i think i follow w/ your scale talk. i know what you mean about the patterns like diminished.. I also learned one pantera riff and i asked my instructor what kind of scale it was and he said it was more so a pattern than a scale. he didn't give me that name for it or anything though....i think he said you could name it but it would have some crazy long technical name because you would break it apart peice by peice.

also ya i like cky a lot. i know sink into the underground and another one ...man i cant believe i forgot the name they played it in jack *** a lot.... it goes duh duh duh dahhh----- duh duh duh da duh duh da.....da da--- da da da--- da..da da da --daaaa.....lol don't know if that will be much help..

but ya i know the main riff for sweet child i know slash plays half a step but i cant even get it to sound right on i think maybe its the distortion he uses and the tone ? not sure

[Edit]: Awesome thats pretty funn the whole hanna montana thing

Awesomemans... I have the same thing but it is the next quality grade up. It has a dual back pickup. Also when you are jamming with friends you learn a whole lot more in 15 minutes than you would in an hour by yourself.

Slash's tone is distinguished and is a product of the guitar, the amp, the effects, but most importantly, the artist himself. Tune your guitar down 1/2 step as you pointed out, and use the neck pickup, not the bridge. Then focus on the quality of your playing - don't let the notes bleed over each other. That riff is a pretty good beginner's string skipping exercise.

i see.....good tips thanks. Ya that was a great string skipping excersice when i first learned it i remember i thought it was so hard and felt awesome when i could play it (even though it wasnt flawless).

but i think i was using my bridge pick up before....but i think thats the next thing i need to focus on is making sure i dont let the notes bleed, and i would accomplish that by hitting the note and slightly lifting my finger off the string right away?

i think currently i've been letting the notes bleed. I know when my insturctor was teaching me some sweep techniques he told me i cant let the notes bleed its kind of tricky to get the motion and lift your fret hand at the same time but comes with practice im sure

[edit]: also i'm impressed you got that...i figured i would add in the lines for holding the notes lol; glad it was distinguishable for you at least! and as soon as i read that i remembered instantly

The White Stripes ( Don't know why, it's just hella fun with friends. )

Oh and I also love playing AudioSlave songs ( I think Tom Morello is awesome... )

A few other songs but I mostly only play for my church, I'm not really into playing for other things, I just play for my church, but it's fun, we change gospel songs to rock, it's pretty funny.

i see.....good tips thanks.

[edit]: also i'm impressed you got that...i figured i would add in the lines for holding the notes lol; glad it was distinguishable for you at least! and as soon as i read that i remembered instantly

a lot of soloing is done using the neck pickup, while a lot of rhythm is done with the bridge.

sweeps are a difficult beast, even for someone playing as long as myself. any hack can pull off the sweep motion, but it takes an expert to make it sound good. the key is note separation, and it takes both hands to master.

your fretting hand literally has to fret the notes one at a time so they dont ring over top of one another. for some arp shapes this is easy. for some its very difficult.

in shapes where you have a "barre" motion, you need to isolate and practice rolling that finger on its own - these are often the most difficult. by roll, i mean lets pretend you are playing a C minor arp shape at the 8th fret (looks like an Em, barred at the 8th fret) - your index finger will be barred across the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings, but you can roll that finger so that its like you are fretting them individually when you sweep it.

also, make sure you hit your hammer ons and pull offs at the top of your arps cleanly and clearly. this takes a lot of coordination and strength in your pinky.

the sweeping (picking) hand should attempt to mute other strings as well, or you will get a lot of nondescript "noise" even if you aren't letting the notes bleed.

and of course, things get even more fun when you tap extra notes at the top of your arp shapes:

YouTube - Crush my battle opponent's balls

Hopefully I will have a youtube clip of myself playing this solo soon^^

once again great advice... ya i think the best thing to do is to start off w/ a more simple pattern. and just practice getting the solid sweep cordination w/ your sweep hand and then practice lifting your fingers up / muting so you get a clean and non bled sound.

ya i've been playing w/ some drum loops just using the pentatonic really since that is my best scale i know right now (I know a few different patterns and i can play it well(well at least for me))

but i pretty much live on my bridge pick up..... and i just figured the bridge pick up is pointing up towards the back neck pick up is pointing towards the neck right? i know it seems obvious but just wanted to double check and the middle one not sure what you'd call it .

but idk i just like the sound of the bridge pick up a lot

[edit]: i cant play it loud im at work lol. i like deathklok though; is that sweeping hes doing? i only played a few seconds and could barely hear it. pretty impressive that you can play it though

When I was learning I never strayed from the bridge pickup for years. It had more crunch, so I thought that's what I should always use. Now I do 90% of my soloing on the neck pup.

Yes neck pickup is next to the end of the neck, bridge pickup is next to the bridge. The one in the middle is just...well... the middle pickup, if you've got one.

Certainly, start with simple patterns. 3-strings max until you get the hang of playing them cleanly. Then move up to 4, 5, and then 6 string sweep shapes. Don't be afraid to stick with 3-string patterns for years... guitar mastery does not come overnight.

In the vid, the tapped sweep arpeggios are from 0:16 to 0:27.

wow tap sweep arpeggios... that just sounds insane....ya thats why i play on it too... so i guess im like you i just thought it sound so much crunchier....crazier that was my exact reason. and my sweep pattern that i've been practicing is 3 strings my fingers mainly stay stationary except i throw my pinky in w/ a pull off i think

Hmmm...This looks like a good place to put my Metallica complaints...

Besides the fact that Lars Ulrich is absolutely the worst metal drummer, or possibly drummer, in history, most of their albums before the Black Album had very high production value, and none really had the polish of albums like Megadeth's Rust in Peace.

But maybe this is because I'm comparing Metallica's 80s stuff to Megadeth's 90s stuff....and Iced Earth's last year stuff. lol....I need to get the new Iced Earth album!

Oh, and Iron Maiden had better quality albums in the 80s than Metallica, but not every band can compare with arguably the best band ever.

Iced Earth's "The Path I Choose" still gives me rhythm hand cramps to this day! I can shred like the wind but man that guy has chops from hell and beyond.

Awesomemans, be careful with confusing opinion with fact^^. None of the Metallica guys may rank near the top as technically proficient players, but that's not to say it was garbage. I happen to opine that its no better or worse than any crap Mustaine ever put out. At the very least, they schooled him in the songwriting department up until Load.

Anyways, who gives a crap? Compared to what some of today's metal bands are churning out, it's all laughable, but at least you have to acknowledge that they extremely influential in directing where metal is today.

Back onto a positive track, what are you guys listening to that nobody else is?
I'm going to recommend Max Cavalera's new project, Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted, even if just for the song Sanctuary.

Ew....

WTF? Um....Weird..

I dunno. It sounds like hard rock near the end but at the beginning it's almost like, Electronic or something.

and @Thegide

I agree that Metallica was incredibly influential, and I love them, just saying. I'm currently listening to All in the Waiting by Buckethead. I love Buckethead. Best, most versatile guitarist, and musician.

Brian Carroll...er I mean Buckethead has certainly gained some reputation, especially since debuting Jordan on Guitar Hero 2.

If you can find it, you should look for one of his earlier projects "Praxis - Mutatis Mutandis". Absolutely fantastic CD, and really showcases his diversity as a player. His playing also really highlights what you can do with Jazz theory IF you can ever wrap your head around it! As far as his tapping skills, you need to look no further than Jennifer Batten for influence. She was Michael Jackson's lead guitar during the early 80's and was pretty much a pioneer of 8-finger tapping.

<-- wealth of useless guitar information

Glam Rock/Industrial... with a bit of Indie in there. I can definitely hear the Mindless Self Indulgence influence going on there.

and it also bugs him because some of the stuff he doesnt isn't very clean at all. I think he is kind of biased casue the kinds of music he likes but i can kind of hear it

well i would think you have to WANT to learn... obviously even though i wasnt very good I would just sit there and play the guitar for like 8 hours or so when i first started....you have to really WANT to do it; can't force yourself or anything

[Edit]: But If i were you I would take some lessons.

Hey i just started a little over a year ago and i started casually plaing and then started to teach myself. Then i acually found an actual guitar class. Now that was great. But they biggest thing i can tell you is that if a song has you beat, find another one that you can work on, and that song and practicing that one should help you with the one you want to play right now. Each song has its own unique exercises. Back when i could not play anything in Wanted Dead or Alive (easy opening once you know what to do, but great very technical guitarist in my opinion). So I moved on, now after going back to it every so often i can now play lots of the song (hate solos >_<) and using that method i can play some of Sweet Child O' Mine (great opening lick, its quite fun) when i used to struggle with it. "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down was a good one to learn because i was easily able to self teach myself how to finger pick even though in the class we are not getting to that for another few months. So move on a little and come back to it, it takes time to get good (thats coming from a guy who has only been playing a little over a year... well i am not that good so i guess it still fits).

Cheers!

See, I find this funny. The guitar playing community as a whole seems to thrive off of bashing other musicians, all of which who are likely more talented than they. I always wrote it off as an ego/jealously thing.

I pretty much grew up idolizing Kirk Hammett, but as a matured and experienced player, I'm tend to agree that your teacher does have somewhat of a point.

From a songwriting perspective, there seems to be a lot of repetition (i.e. the 3-note pedal point hammer-on/pulloffs in Enter Sandman solo) in his solos in terms of reusing licks and his scale runs are often very predictable runs of ascending or descending triplets or quadruplets (i.e. The Shortest Straw). Even the solos on Death Magnetic sound as if they were pulled directly from Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, or ...And Justice for All.

Compared to some other lesser-known players of his era (i.e. Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Michael Angelo) he certainly can't compete from a technical skill perspective. I wouldn't go so far to call him a sloppy player, but there are a few solos where mistakes and sloppy playing show. In the "One" solo, those fast 3-note pull-offs are randomly inverted, which means his tapping hand is out-of-sync with his fretting hand. In other solos, there are fast ascending bits where the scale structure falls apart and it looks as if he is hitting the wrong notes (or random notes) because he can't play it properly.

I certainly don't think he is a crap player - the solos on ...and Justice are indeed tricky and he pulls it off on the album. Maybe he's not technically proficient enough to shred 16th notes at 200bpm or pull off long streches of wild sweep arps, but then again, not many people in his era were able to either. The bar is now raised, and I think there are possibly thousands of bedroom guitarists capable of matching or exceeding his skill.

hmm...i wish i knew which pattern in particular he really made fun of its one in one of his new songs but it kind of sounds like one in the devil went down to georgia... that one he said is really sloppy..

i think the pattern is done all on the high E and you use like your first third and last finger and move towards your head stock in a pattern and its pretty fast.

and he said the same thing i asked him if there were a lot of people better than kirk out there and he said there were thousands he was sure. (but its obviously not ALL skill. he can make some cool riffs he was in a band that makes good songs)

i think i agree w/ you about musicians making fun of others im sure its often cause of their ego. my teacher is quite good but i know that kind of music isnt his cup of tea so i figured he was quite biased although he does highly respect dime bag; which i feel was an incredible guitarist.

i know he kind of mimiced the solo from memory of "walk" and i was impressed i could tell it was a diminished scale... my ears getting a lot better. i know he can just listen to a song and play it

Being able to figure out a song by ear like that is something that comes with time and experience. It's more an auditory learning thing than anything. Experienced musicians can often pick out a song's key or mode (scale) simply by listening.

Did you happen to watch the youtube video in my first post (Become the Catalyst)? I transcribed that solo by ear because there were no accurate tab for the solo anywhere - some of it I was able to figure out naturally, but some of it I had to slow the song down to figure out. I couldn't have done that 10 years ago. And clearly, most other youtubers and tabbers can't either, because its very very rare to find an accurate tab these days...

ya i saw that one. i figured a music ear and rythem are both things you cant really force in a short amount of time like skill. Rythem i think you can force or try to practice alot more...so maybe musical ear is the only thing you cant really force... cause my rythem wasn't that great because i played by myself w/o drums or anything; i was pretty much winging it.

i remember when i very first started playing(this was my first instrument as well) its weird i pretty much had no concept of rythem. my friend (who had played the violin since he was like 3 and then the bass) hounded me hard core when me and a couple other friends were making a song (i could barely do power chords) and my friend was on bass and another guy was singing.

he got so mad because i wasnt on rythem and i really didnt even get what he meant. but as of lately i've been trying and focusing on rythem and it seems i've gotten better even lately and dramatically better from when i first started...started practicing w/ drum loops just doing the pentatonic improvising

[Edit]: i've also noticed my musical ear improving like i'll hit a first note and be like hey that sounds like such and such and can figure it out. (I make up a lot of my own stuff / tool around) The other day at my friends i was improvising and i figured out the riff for that one like child hood song....theres a place in france were the naked ladies dance....theres a hole in the wall where you can see it all...

lol i hit like the first 3 notes and was like wait a minute...thought it was pretty funny when i figured it out..i was like now if i could only figure out something useful; i've figured out the beginning to star wars too

And here's where I strongly encourage you to use a metronome when you sit down for a formal practice session. While it's not something my teacher ever had me do, I use a metronome with all of my students. What good is music if it's off time? How can you expect to play with anyone else if you can't keep perfect time?

Another useful tip:

One of the secrets to speed building is to use a metronome when learning new material. Begin at a tempo that is easy for you and at which you can play the passage perfectly. Slowly increment the metronome and stop at the tempo at which you cannot go faster without playing sloppy or making mistakes. Then edge the tempo up a bit, then back it down back to your "perfect" speed. Repeat.

OMFG, Marty Friedman for the win. Kirk Hammet does have some sloppy solos, especially One's tapping part. Apparently people think he's great for THAT solo, but he's not, he's great for some of his other stuff. Like the other parts in One. Maybe this is because I'm 14, but that one part in the beginning of Fade To Black is hard! It's like, a reach from the 14th fret on the 1st string to the 19th fret I think, and he does it pretty fast, and it's pretty difficult at first.

Anyone here hate Dragonforce and their crappy guitarist? He's NOT a professional. Honestly, there are people on Youtube with 3 views that are 100 times better than him. Dragonforce's songs are all the same, and yet they're famous. I'm jealous. Dragonforce fans who won't admit Dragon force sucks are like Metallica fans who won't admit that LARS ULRICH is a bad drummer. He really is mediocre, but unfortunately so are a lot of other metal drummers. But in the past couple years, I've seen metal shift from a focus on melody to a focus on rhythm, and a bunch of crazy drummers.

Wow, I must have ADD or something. :arg:

It looks I'm late, but, anyway:

I have two Ibanez RG series (24 frets 3 pickups and 22 frets 2 pickups (no middle single coil) and a Marshall valvestate 2000.
I play since I was 18 (14 years now) and CANNOT swiftpick, I'm told my hands are too small to master it.
Usually I play Inflames (colony rules!) and Disturbed (All the songs from Belive, now I'm practiceing with Ten thousand fists).

At the moment I have a band formely known as ''Filthy Masquerade'', I write music and the lead voice writes lyrics.

We're looking for a keyboard-player (for some effects) but haven't found one yet.
We are: Lead vocals (male) - vocals (female) - and obviously drum, bass, 1 guitar (that's me).
Never had a gig until now, but we are planning to.

Unless you have the hands of a 2-year old, I'm going to say its entirely possible! If Michael Romeo can play *like that* with his sausage fingers, anyone can.

I've been playing 17 years and have never had a gig either. It's just not something I ever strive for. Not the kind of person that likes being the center of attention. At least youtube lets me do it anonymously

------------

Ok, let me chime in my two cents on Dragonforce, since I happen to be especially opinionated on their matter.

Regarding technical skill: Yes Herman and his sexually-confused sidekick Sam have a decent degree of technical ability. But the ILLUSION they present with their music is that they are the fastest players on earth. Wrong, because half of it is fake. How do you fake solos? A thousand takes in the studio with some fancy editing to pull together the occasions where you nailed parts of it. It's one thing to play a part of something hard once... its another thing to play the entire solo start to finish without mistake consistently. How you do fake a solo live? Even easier! Muddy up your sound, hide behind wah wah pedals and Digitech whammy effects, and nobody can actually tell what you're playing! It just sounds like something like what you heard on the record. I would probably have a lot more respect if they toned down the fantasy speed guitar playing and stuck with something that was better matched with their skill.

For the record, I have seen Dragonforce play live. It's embarassing. I would be ashamed if it were me.

Regarding songwriting ability: Here's where the plane crashes into the mountain. Joe Satriani summed it up best when he said something along the lines of "its suffocating, they don't know how to let their music breathe". And he's absolutely correct. Listening to Dragonforce gives me an anxiety attack and sends my blood pressure through the ceiling. I can't breathe. On top of that, I have yet to hear them write anything even moderately original. Mostly I hear them speeding up riffs that are ripped right out of a lot of 80s hair and power metal.

Regarding image: They destroy the credibility of shred metal. Sam acts like a 12 year old girl on stage and off, wears low-rider too-tight jeans and hasn't figured out that long hair with a bald spot in the center is as offensive as sandals with socks. Over the top "major scale" feel with gratuitous shots of hair-whipping juxtaposed against images of dragons and videogames makes me feel like I'm catching homo. I'm not kidding.

I absolutely love guitar shredding, but for the life of me, I can't stomach the aural diarrhea Dragonforce produces. Please fade back into the shadows, now.

I'd suggest trying to find some casual lessons for a beginner. There are some basic skills an instructor can help you master quickly, but more importantly, they can identify and correct major problems with posture and technique that might be impeding your progress.

i think another song i was going to learn w/ my friend that plays bass is the gorillas feel good inc....its got a pretty wicked bass line and i think it would be fun to play w/ friends

I agree 100%.

I think they would be better if they focused on songwriting more. You can still be a great band without having the best guitarist in the world. If you aren't the best guitarist in the world, shut up and play a modest solo.

I can't say I like Screamo bands like BFMV too much, plus they very well could be one of those bands put together by record companies for money. Never heard them play live. COB is good. For some reason my brother hates keyboards, but I think they can certainly add zaz to a song, like Rainbow In the Dark's main hook is that keyboard riff.

I found metal these days to be lacking something....It seems so shallow. All about speed these days. Is it me, or are slower songs usually heavier than fast songs? And screaming doesn't really appeal to me. Hurts my ears. I know a lot of kids at my school love it, but I think those are the kids who will be listening to Lil Wayne in a couple months. I want originality now. I want a classic rock band!

Man, that totally cracked me up! I'm going to spam this quote all over youtube later.

I should start a thread showcasing some of the epically bad guitar playing dumped on the internet^^. But, perhaps that is too cruel...

ya i never knew he put his solos together like that but it makes sense...thats why i respect a lot of the older music more...the guys who actually recorded songs in one sitting AS A BAND! and not all in pecies and peice the **** together because they cant even play their own music

also awesome i agree i dont care for screaming

You know it does hurt my ego a bit to know that Alexi Laiho is my age... I mean I can play his stuff, but I'd be ignorant to think that I'm as good as him^^. Plus being able to sing on top of that... I have to give him lots of respect.

I've got a friend who hates keyboards in metal with a passion. I personally don't understand this at all... but I'm also a big prog fan. Dream Theater, Symphony X, Angra, Rush, Liquid Tension Experiment, King Crimson, Devin Townsend... lots of keys. There's lots you can do on a keyboard that you can't replicate on a guitar, and obviously vice versa. So, they complement each other perfectly as far as I'm concerned.

What are your guys' thoughts on Tom Morello? I have hit a stage where I love AudioSlave, and I'm constantly tabbing out the songs and trying to play them.

Last two days, tried to perfect this song, and not trying to sound ignorant, but I'm almost there.

YouTube - Audioslave - Be Yourself

Yes, I know that the solo isn't "OMGHOLYCRAPWHATISHEPLAYINGWOWHEISPRO"

But I tend to stick with music that kind of talks, the way he uses the guitar is amazing in my opinion.

What are your thoughts? If any?

Ya tom morello is a really really good guitarist; he can make the guitar talk pretyt much. audio slave wasn't down my alley too much but i still respect him as a musician and i know what you mean about the solo not being crazy but then again it doesnt have to be. Dragon force can take a lesson from tom. i would say his solos are a lot better and about 1/50th of the speed.

but i like his rage agaisnt the machine style better. thats just my preference though

-Marty Friedman (Megadeth)

And pretty much anyone taught by Joe Satriani. And if you haven't checked out Satriani, then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Howdy, you can count me in as another guitarist. I play across many styles but I mostly gravitate towards blues and rock. I have way too many guitars to list but my main solidbody is an Ibanez JEM from when they had the cases with the pink carpetting inside, I sold off most of my amps but I mainly fiddle on a Mesa/Boogie rectoverb and a Fender Blues Jr.

And I love Satch and Vai ^^^ You should definitely check them out, ham.

Ewww... Tom Morello. Fantastic. Now I get to be hated upon by everyone. I think Tom Morello sucks, and for valid reason. I happen to like RATM a lot, but as far as guitar players go, there isn't anything Tom does that impresses me. He's a one-trick pony with his surgically attached Digitech Whammy pedal (I used to have one myself). Aside from pitch shifting half the notes in every solo, I'm not sure what other talent he possesses. I didn't actually *dislike* him until Audioslave, when it became disgustingly apparent how creatively limited he is. I forget the name of one very radio-popular song, but I distinctly remember its solo that sounded like a cat being put in a blender... it was like a random mess of out of tune/off key notes being gutted by the whammy pedal. I literally thought he forgot how to play guitar... it sounded terrible, much like giving a 12 year old their first guitar lesson. I think his Whammy pedal style was a novelty that gave him fame, but its becoming embarassingly evident that he's not capable of much else.

In short: one-trick pony who lacks technical skill and lacks any innovation and diversity. Oh, and I totally kicked his butt in GH3.

Fantastic choices! I think Broderick is part time with Nevermore these days as well. He's a far better player than Jeff Loomis and he's got some serious two handed technique going on.

For the Satch-ignorant... the album to pick up is "Surfing with the Alien". Also, I recommend the songs War and Summer Song off "The Extremist". Of the more recent albums, check out "Crystal Planet"

You're right. Now you get to get hated on by everyone. I found that a lot of his RATM stuff was very good. Even his normal solos. He's not a total shredder, but he is an innovator. The first to put weird *** noises in his guitar solos.

Very nice VWH! And I couldn't agree more about the construction. I don't have the scalloped 21-24 on mine, but it plays like a dream and surprisingly so given that it's a bolt on neck with passive pickups.

Their guitarist is talented but needs to work on his playing. Seriously. He needs to clean up his solos bad, and Dragonforce as a whole needs to stop writing the same song over and over again.

Dragonforce is to 14 year old boys what Hannah Montana is to 14 year old girls. Need I say more?

And yes, I heard of them when Inhuman Rampage was released (because of Through the Fire and Flames), but that wasn't long before GH3 came out. They didn't hit big with their previous 2(?) albums... and it looks like they didn't hit big with their latest album either. One hit wonder is what I'm thinking.

The overuse of the word "overrated" has lost all credibility and meaning on the internets. It can be used to mean any of the following:

- I don't like something
- I think there is better out there
- Everyone else likes something and I want to be different (antimainstream syndrome)
- I'm a total idiot

I want a 7-string Universe, a Gibson Explorer, and a new acoustic. Now. O wait, life doesn't work that way.

Of course, I say that kiddingly. But truthfully, I'm not about to go and learn solos for songs I don't give a crap about just to prove I can play them to people on the internet. Sorry. I might change my mind and attempt to learn BatH... maybe.

Instead, I offer you a video of myself pulling off this, which I argue is more difficult than either of those solos:
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=140907&postcount=49

I'm *very* close to having this one nailed... as of last week, was able to hit this perfectly a few bpms shy of full speed. Once my exams are over tomorrow, I'm going to get back on the videocam until I have my clip.

baito as in michael angelo baito ? if so that guy is a weirdo. my instructor went to one of his guitar clinics and he makes like weird noises and does voices talking out of the side of his mouth. and hes got that crazy ugly wig idk what he was thinking when he picked that out....

and that side double guitar ok kind of cool but i saw a pic of him w/ a guitar of 4 necks total.....its like dude come on....

also when he does this hand flip thing he eventually starts going so fast he doesnt even hit the notes anymore.

also i like the afterlife solo.

[Edit]: Also I like the chinese democ. song and also the shack revenge. mainly cause the guitaring the other songs are crap though

guess he just wants to try show everyone up and become the worlds best... NEVER gunna happen.
I know he sucks and his guitars but my friends changed his mind to KGs - kyle Gass' version from the movie

Michael Angelo Batio may be a dinkus, but he's pretty incredible. I mean the guy can shred ambidextrously. If you can find it, check out his instructional video called "Speed Kills." The 4 neck thing was totally for showoff, but it's pretty funny to hear him talk about it.

He was doing overhand shred crap back when Herman Li was still in diapers, once again proving that Dragonforce is only good at ripping off other people.

its pretty funny my guitar instructors friends got a picture of them standing next to him.....they did a couple edits in photoshop.

one was they made everyone bald. the second was they gave everyone michael angelos hair cut lol ahhaah. also the ambidexterous playing is pretty good i think he just tries to show off too much instead of making actual good music (but then again good music isnt something anyone can deffine.)

i'm just saying he does scales for whole songs really fast or just shreds way too much instead of making real songs w/ soul or feel to them

Well I was already familiar with the song having played GH2 back in its day.

Of the two net tabs I pulled, one was flat out wrong for most of the solo, the other one was close. By ear I was able to fix what I felt was wrong about it.

The big thing to practice for this solo is the chromatic scale (that's the scale made up of all the notes) arranged in 4 note-per-string patterns. Quick theory lesson - the chromatic scale is a synthetic (artificial), symmetrical (mirror image with respect to note intervals) scale.

Since about 75% of this solo is running the chromatic scale up and down, most of it was a no-brainer. There were really only two parts that required some practice...the first is that huge jump from the high notes at the 21st fret all the way down to the low frets near the beginning. It's fast, and there's a very quick pit stop along the way. This is by far the most difficult part. The second is the quick note clusters that follow this. These are 16th note triplets at 150bpm. You're either this fast from lots of practice already, or you're not. The big problem here is that its not clear exactly *what* he's playing (though it is still chromatic) - and here's where all the tabs sound wrong.

So yeah. Difficulty I'd rate about 6/10. I'll do a few more takes tonight and try to record something played over top of the album track. I violated a big rule here by not recording this against a metronome so the timing isn't great and it's clearly sloppy in places. But, learning, practicing, and recording a decent take in a single night is pretty good I think, no?

i saw that guy...he is pretty awesome at sweeping thats for sure. not sure how he would fair about making up his own stuff though. but i kind of had a feeling the after life solo was a chromatic.

i think the chromatic scale was the first one i learnt either that or minor pentatonic. I still practice the chromatic a lot i can do it pretty quick forward and back started practicing string skipping with it too.

is the after life solo string skipping with it?

I have Rusty's self titled debut album. There's no doubt he can write as well as shred. Check out the song "outworld" I think there is a youtube live clip. He's not as equally talented in that department, but he can definitely play with feeling and emotion and doesn't spend 100% of his time shredding away scales.

Nah, just arpeggios with the chromatic parts in Afterlife...

so you mean you only hit like 3 notes in the chromatic or you do all 4 notes? didn't think a chromatic could be an arppegio unless my view on what a chromatic is , is not 100% correct.

my impression of a chromatic (although it could just be one variety ) is i start with my first finger on the 3rd fret for example and then i do second finger on the 4th third on 5th fourth on 6th fret. and hit them in that order and scale the strings with them and go in reverse order on the way back up

[Edit]: Ah nvm... i think i know what you mean he just does arpeggio 's.. AND some chromatics?

so when you say arpeggio i thought that was just picking out the notes of a chord...but i know sweep picking is generally doing an arpeggio right? so what is an arpeggio when you do it anywhere else on the guitar.....is it just a scale?2009-02-10 22:04:00

An arpeggio is the essentially a chord with its notes articulated (separated). Whether its sweep picked or not doesn't change whether its an arpeggio.

If you consider that an arp is made from the notes of a chord, its not really a scale, but would belong to any scale from which you could derive the chord.

i've seen you say arp a lot too what is that? i'm guessing its the patterns that they do sweeping BUT...if its an arpeggio then that means its part of a chord and they do it anywhere on the fretboard so....the only chords i really know of anywhere on the fret board are like the bar chords anywhere.

maybe my chord knowledge is limited but i'm just not sure what the arps are or how it is an arpeggio that they are sweeping instead of a scale( or are you saying they are scales but also arpeggios? like are they just sweeping like diminished / major / minor scales stuff like that?)

i think you're confusing yourself here... so forget everything you know for a second.

first "arp" is simply short for arpeggio. same thing.

now... to put this in context. let's take a chord. we'll use the C[major] chord for simplicity. it doesn't matter where you play it on the neck, whether it's barred or not. the C chord is made up of the notes C E G and only those notes. They can be repeated and at different octaves, but a chord comprised of only those notes will always be C major.

The C major scale contains the notes C D E F G A B. So the C major chord is part of the C major scale, because all of the notes of C chord are found in it.

When we play a typical C chord (the first way we learn! fingering --> (x-3-2-0-1-0)) the notes, in order (low to high) are... C-E-G-C-E.

If we play the C chord as a barre chord at the 8th fret (E major "shape") the notes in order are C-G-C-E-G-C.

Now... the simplest arp (arpeggio) you could play would be playing these notes exactly as they are in the chord. In other words, play the chord one note at a time. There. That is an arpeggio.

We can also add in the missing notes until we have a repeating pattern like this: C-E-G-C-E-G-C-E. This means including every C, E, or G along the way of your box shape. This is how your common arpeggio shapes are built - by adding in the missing notes to basic chord shapes. It is still a C chord, but you just can't strum it because inevitably this means that some strings have more than one note on them.

Sweeping is merely a picking technique that means you're picking across multiple strings in the same direction (like a strum, only slower). Just because you sweep something doesn't make it an arpeggio. And just because its an arpeggio doesn't mean you have to, or even should, sweep it. Arpeggios and sweeping are completely unrelated, except that it happens by chance that an easy way to play an arpeggio quickly is to sweep it.

So, in short:

Arpeggios are chords played one note at a time.
Chords are built from a few notes taken from a scale.
Arpeggios are not scales.
Sweeping is a picking technique and nothing more.

k got it... i think what threw me off the most was what patterns and everything people did when sweeping. and that arp was short for arpeggio. and that i knew an arpeggio was a chord picked out so i was confused how they could do the arpeggio anywhere but as you've pointed out you can do a scale wherever. Man I want you as my instructor lol.

also that romeo guy is pretty awesome. and i listend to your beast and the harlot solo I could deal you were doing a acending string skipping chromatic for one part. i actually started doing that for practice to kind of jazz up the chromatic.

i also have a triplet pentatonic pattern i know where its like your ascending and descending at the same time

wow Ham, it looks like you know a little bit more about scales than i do. But umm... but that kinda cleared up the merky water for me when it came to the arps and sweeps. But yeah...

Anyway... What is your take on Breaking Benjamin... personally i think they got some pretty good melodies (basically what i look for in a song so i can get a feel for it). And what is your take on Bon Jovi (very technical guitar player, shown very well in "Wanted Dead or Alive" in the solo, there were a giant myriad of techniques in there)

Cheers!

i looked up the chromatic on youtube i think first and pentatonic. But my instructor showed me a couple patterns w/ the pentatonic. And showed me some string skipping stuff. and he showed me a diminished and major scale so its going pretty good (even though i missed my past 2 lessons)

but i can't remember this one breaking benjamin song it was pretty cool...the guitars like da na na na na na na na nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh...its just kind of fast w/ the same notes; its cool.

i think i actually looked it up and its pretty easy but they do really weird tuning.

and about bon jovi i dont think i know too many other songs but i love Wanted dead or a live that song is bad ***. i think those guitar licks are really really cool as well as the solo. i actually might learn that song at my next lesson or just do some more scale stuff but i'll prob go w/ bon jovi

Lots of pinch harmonics in that solo. But listening to the song just makes me want to go out and buy a 12-string acoustic.

I tried some Michael Romeo stuff again today and yep, its just as hard as I remember it. His legato playing is simply mind blowing... he barely touches the string and it rings out perfectly clear... and you never hear any other muted strings in the background. I tend to have the opposite problem.

At least you guys have helped motivate me to get back practicing every day, instead of like once a week. I've got some work to do building my callouses up again. I shred for an hour and my fingers are sore ><.

hell i have been practicing for a long time. over the last year (how long i have been playing) and my calluses are still not perfect, My fingers still get sore, its quite annoying seeing how they should be just fine by now.

Anyway. I am going to have to write a solo for the guitar class that i am taking. It is a rock solo that should have all the parts (the intro/hook, the introduction, the development, and the closing), that has to go over a classic 12 bar blues (rock acoustic style, and no swing). So i got some work to do, oh and using only boxes I, II, and III

Cheers!

no no no, not the first three fretts... But boxes I, II, and III for rock... so I is the pentatonic but on the fith fret, II is 5 notes: 9 on 3rd string, 8 and 10 on 2nd string, and 8 and 10 on first string (looks like a box), III is the same as II but the entire shape is moved up to frets, 10, 11, and 12.

Cheers!

Ok, so you're limited to using 3 pentatonic box shapes. I'm not sure exactly what shapes I, II, and III are, but I can gather a pretty good guess given that there are typically 5 box shapes for pentatonic patterns.

(Hint: penta meaning 5 notes in the scale, and one shape to start on each different note.)

What key is your chord progression in? I would be happy to give you some feedback on your solo before you hand it in....

Of course, I could write you a killer one too, but that would be cheating! (and I'd probably make it too hard haha!)

hehe, you would make it WAY too hard for me man, it is the basic 12 bar blues, 4 of A, 2 of D, 2 of A, 2 of E, 1 of D, and then 1 of A, finally one last A strum in the end as a whole note (lower string open, and then you switch between fret 2 and 4 on the higher adjacent string, then you just switch strings: 4&5 for A, 3&4 for D, 5&6 for E). But thats it dang it would be soo much easier to just have a picture available to give you so you can see, the box shapes. Anyway, yes i think there are 5 pentatonic shapes, and then there are different versions of those 5 for the different styles, so the ones for blues will be way different sounding from the ones for Rock. Basically i just need to make a melody in my head and then expand on it to make the solo. (thought of a perfect one once, but i lost it and could not remember it anymore )

Cheers!

So 12 bar blues in A minor. It's ok, you don't need a picture, I know exactly what you are describing!

Just so you know, the pentatonic is pentatonic. Any variations on them and you're no longer playing a pentatonic scale. For example, the blues scale is a pentatonic scale with a flat 5th added (for a total of six notes).

Anyways, like I said, if you want feedback or ideas just give me a shout.

hahahaha will do, but i guess it will be cheating if you did too much, plus if you were to write it it would be a little too hard for me, simplicity, if you think it sounds good in a melody, then it will make a good solo.

You might of heard of the "Foo Fighters". Dave was Nirvana's drummer and after Kurt's death, formed the Foo Fighters. He's not IN the band... he more or less IS the band. The first album he completed pretty much solo, but I presume that more of the recent albums are more of a collaborative effort between him and his bandmates.

My point was to point out how, despite that Nirvana was "Kurt's band", Grohl has proved himself to be an excellent songwriter, and master of guitar, vocals, drums, and god knows how many other instruments.

It's hard to recommend what's best for you at this point without knowing exactly where you are.

But, some exercises that you can do at any intermediate-to-advanced skill level include the following:

- all 5 pentatonic box shapes, played up and down the neck
- all 7 diatonic scale shapes, played up and down the neck (this inclues the major/Ionian and minor/Aeolian scales)
- 4 note-per-string chromatic box, up and down the neck (im going to stop saying this... but its implied from here out that you play all exercises up and down the neck - it builds endurance and dexterity)

- pentatonic shapes in 3 note-per-string patterns
- diatonic shapes in 4 note-per-string patterns

- harmonic minor scale, phrygian dominant scale
- melodic minor scale ascending and descending
- half-diminished, whole diminished scales
- whole tone scale
- augmented scale

- ALL OF THE ABOVE SCALES played as ascending triplets and quadruplets. (i.e for the chromatic scale, its like 1-2-3-2-3-4-3-4-5-4-5-6 or 1-2-3-4-2-3-4-5-3-4-5-6....). Do this for box shape patterns, as well as up and down on a single string.

- all scales played in ascending and descending 3rds (i.e. chromatic: 1-3-2-4-3-5-4-6)

- major and minor arpeggio shapes, diminished arpeggio shape, augmented arpeggio shape

- alternate picking exercises (quintuplets, septuplets... i.e. 1-2-3-2-1, 3-2-1-2-3...) on single string, across multiple strings in box shapes.

- string skipping exercises (can be done with the previous exercise)

- learn to "economy pick" (if you don't know what this is already... google it) box patterns

- if that doesn't take you the next several years to get through let me know...i have more >: D

wow holy crap thegide....lol....that will take me so long to perfect all those lol ahahha

but right now my only knowledge for scales is chromatic (where i have been doing string skipping for it and moving down the fretboard so thats good...havnt though to do the pattern for it like 1-2-3-2-3-4)

and diminished...i've been doing a whole scaled and my instructor showed me a pattern where you get to the G string and restart it and continue down the fretboard.

and pentatonic...i dont even do the normal pattern anymore i just practice the acending triplet and... a pattern where you start for example on like the 3rd fret on the A string then hit the sixth fret on the E string. then go down to the 5th fret on the A string then back up the the 3rd fret on the E string..

so your acending and descending at the same time.

and the major scale...trying to get that one down really good..he showed me two ways to play it one way..where you continue the same pattern for the bottom four strings (or the top four if i were to say it proper apparently) or another way where you shift over a fret for the last two strings (this way you avoid hitting the same note twice if your doing a pattern)

i may know what they are but not quite sure whe the termoninology but what different box shapes are you referring to?

and awesome i'm not quite sure, i heard one on the radio...i didnt even know it was megadeath till they said after the song...it had a pretty BA guitar riff. but do you reccommend buying the CD?

This is an example of a box shape (C major scale):

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/img/lessons/pentamodal/2.gif

You should work hard at getting comfortable "seeing" the scales on your fretboard as vertical patterns (along a single string) as well as horizontal patterns (box shapes). This is possibly the most important skill for improvising and is absolutely critical to the development of your speed and composition skills.

When you really understand box shapes you realize a few things. First is that they serve to map out all of the notes of a scale across the fretboard. They help to break up the fretboard into playable "chunks" since playing horizontally is infinitely easier than playing vertically. But they all interconnect. Second, those 5 pentatonic shapes and 7 diatonic shapes cover all of the pentatonic and diatonic scales (including both major and minor) in any and every key.

For example... learning the 7 box shapes to cover the C major scale across the entire fretboard teaches you how to play C Ionian (aka major)...D Dorian... E Phrygian... F lydian... G mixolydian... A Aeolian (aka minor)...and B locrian scales ANYWHERE on the neck. Now shift everything up two frets: you've now covered D major, E Dorian, F# Phrygian... etc etc etc.

by learning only 7 patterns you can now play 7 scales * 12 keys = 84 different scales!

I'm totally getting carried away here...

Do you use Guitar Pro 5? If not, I recommend picking up that piece of software. I could send you oodles of lessons that would be infinitely more easy than trying to explain it in this text box.

I think its about $60... same as a video game.

Insanely useful bit of software, oodles better than PowerTab, well worth the money. Anyone with a guitar and a computer should own this.

if you have a mac then you are sooo in luck, the garageband 09 looks great. all kinds of distortion pedals, and all of that jazz (amps included) all from different manufactures and you can mod a bunch of them and be able to use them while you are recording. So... you have like an ultimate guitar recorder. But hey i have never tried that other program. And i will check out guitar pro 5, question though, is it that lame tab with the sound WAY off from how it was actually played? or is it actually sound ok on the playback? Oh and can you get this in stores or is a strictly online purchase.

Cheers!

Both powertab and guitar pro are MIDI-driven, which means that by default, guitars don't sound too much like guitars.

Guitar Pro also has something called RSE (real sound engine) which if you choose to enable, gives you more realistic sounding instruments. For the sake of playback, I usually stick with the stock MIDI sounds though because tend to be clearer to the ear.

Also guitar pro does a much better job of emulating things like bends, harmonics, and palm mutes.

Really it all comes down to the quality of the tab though. Some tabs are written well, some are awful. For the most part though, tabs sound very close to the actual songs, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Has anyone heard o' Muse? Good band, good guitar. Try 'Invincible' or 'Plug In Baby'... Invincible uses a Slider for its main riff and its solo is pretty good for playing. Plug In Baby just has a good riff all the way through. 2009-02-23 20:43:00

Yep, I know Muse. They are pretty mainstream, plus Knights of Cydonia is on Guitar Hero 3. Can't say I'm a big fan, but obviously they are doing something right.

also that was awesome...i don't listen to those guys but that is an awesome riff/ solo. really crunchy and cool sounding. it almost looks like you were doing some drop D type techniques and doing power chords so you must of not been in drop D

24 frets!

The song is in standard D tuning... so everything is down a whole step. There's power chords and harmonized thirds I'm playing. It's two guitar parts technically for the rhythm section.

Sorry the audio quality is terrible, it was made with my old webcam.

huh ok....so since EVERYTHING is a whole step you can still do power chords. A tuning I tried and liked was....I went half a step down and then I went "Drop D" which wouldn't really be drop D but it sounded cool.

for some reason your guitar looked really long lol like 26 or something (idk if thats even possible.) I think mines only like 21 frets D:

and ironmaiden good find. i'll check it out.

No, but Kirk Hammet really isn't too good of a guitar player. I mean, he's good, but not too impressive.

On Youtube someone called my and ignorant biased moron for saying that Metallica was better than Megadeth, but he's really the moron. I'm entitled to my opinion, and in terms of talent, Megadeth is obviously better than Metallica. I hate people who say "you can't compare two great bands" but I can. That's like saying I can't compare Skittles and Starbursts because they're both two great foods, but I can. Starbursts are 1337 but you get more skittles for your moolah. Everyone has their opinion of who is better but some are too scared to say it or are afraid someone will disagree so they don't express their opinion but tell everyone else they're stupid for having one. And if someone thinks two bands are both great, then they obviously aren't too passionate about the two. I love both Megadeth and Metallica, and that's how I know that Megadeth is better than Metallica.

Oh, and I bet Metallica live is awesome, or at least it would be awesome if James didn't @#$! up his voice from head banging.

Awesomemans, if there's one thing you can count on youtube for, it's smack talk coming from 13 year olds. Don't let it get to you man, people just like calling people idiots on the internet because they have no real balls to do it to anyone in real life.

I never liked Megadeth, plain and simple. It's not that I think Kirk is better than Dave or Marty anything stupid like that (obviously Marty is the best guitarist in this comparison), I just don't like Megadeth songs, period. They bore me. Metallica's early stuff was the opposite for me, so in my eyes, Metallica is the better *band* (and unarguably more popular) even though their musicians are less technically skilled.

Then again, the music industry has proven over and over that skill does not mean squat.
