We're your kind and friendly neighbourhood Contest Crew, right back from Hawaii Island after a vacation to give space to the other friendly forums.
The vastness of the Ocean gave us a wonderful idea for our next contest!

An underwater level...?
Is that even a contest?
YAY!!!
You know we like sick twists.
What we want this time is something that we haven't seen yet.
Unrelentingly FAST underwater action.
A completely underwater level with a fast, really fast, insanely fast pace.
Fast like...nothing we've seen yet on LBP.
Fast like...some "early" winner of LBPC
Let our sackboy swim soooo fast through it.

Plunge us into watery depths for an amazing experience!

Building requirements

RULE CHANGE: You will be allowed to use a non-seat, nearest player controllinator in your level if you so choose. For example: While swimming with your sackboy, maybe you have it set so that L1 (or any button you wish) operates some sort of contraption that propels you, or pushes, pulls, drags, dropkicks, headbutts, spins or shoots you through a portion of your level.

• Create a level experience of your choice, with intense fast gameplay, completely underwater
• You can OPTIONALLY use a scuba-diver power-up
• The level must include gameplay so no movie levels, please! It can contain quick cutscenes that don't slow down the overall pace.
• The overall length must be between 4 and 7 minutes, we want our reflexes to be put to the test but not sore hands

How to enter

• Build a level before the deadline that fits the contest description and building requirements.
• Include the text “(LBPC8)” in the title of the level. Don’t forget to add things like a nice looking badge, some tags, and a concise level description.
• Publish your levels before 11:59PM GMT on 17th June 2012.
• Post LBP.me links to your levels in this thread, so we’re sure not to miss them!
• After the deadline, the judges will grab their flippers and select the best levels based on the scoring criteria below. The creator of the best level will be pinned/crowned a winner!

Judging criteria

Levels will be judged according to the following criteria:
• Gameplay – Here, we’re scoring things like fun factor, balanced difficulty and freedom from glitches and bugs.
• Originality – How innovative is your creation? How well did you take the source material to create something unique yet still have it be recognizable?
• Visuals – This is all about how good your level looks. We like detail and lighting and special effects, but try to avoid graphics-induced lag!
• Audio – Sound effects and music are a great way to turn your level into an addictive and immersive experience.

Rules and Regulations

• This contest is open to all ages and all regions. That means anyone can participate!
• All entries must be playable in LittleBigPlanet 2
• You can only enter one level. Duplicate entries will result in disqualification.
• The contest officially begins on 7th May 2012 at 12:00am GMT. Previously published entries will not be accepted.
• Levels must be published before the deadline with “(LBPC8)” in their title. After the deadline, do not republish. Levels republished after the deadline will be disqualified. Exceptions may be made for quick fixes with respect to level titles, description, badges, or major game-breaking fixes, but only with the prior consent of the contest crew. If you need to request an edit, please post in this thread and send me a PM.
• Levels must be your own creation. Feel free to take inspiration from the world around you and from other levels, but don’t copy someone else’s work outright! That’s just not cool….
• Last but not least, have fun, play fair and respect other creators!


Also a little Handy FAQ for you all


Q: Can I enter a previously published level?
A: No.

Q: Can I enter a level I already have on my moon, but hasn't yet been published?
A: Yes.

Q: Once I've published my entry, can I republish it?
A: You can republish it as many times before the deadline as you like, but not after the deadline.

Q: When will the judging begin?
A: The judges may take a look at some levels prior to the deadline, but the judging proper will not begin until after the deadline.

Q: When will the results be posted?
A: We can't really give any accurate answer to this, but it will be no more than a month after the judging begins.

You guys and gals mights want to address this now. You've used a singular and plural term again and looking at the last few threads it always leads to a barrage of "group creation" questions.

Its a shame we cant use sackbots for this level. I already have a Sonic style sackbot with underwater platforming that would have been perfect if that were the case.

well sackbots can't really swim anyways? i'll most likely just gonna make another Dareti level. AKA my own series i work on. but hey you can always add sackbots in the level as NPC and other stuff. no real need to control a sackbot for this theme IMO.

A fast paced, underwater level?! *mind offically blown* I'm agreeing with everyone from before. This is going to be very...interesting! I would like to see what people come up with. If it's one thing LBPC group is good at, its coming up with crazy ideas whilst on holiday

RIght, so, Is there someway to fake that you're underwater? or do you have to be completely submerged in water? Good luck everybody...

Completely submerged. No blue glass in front of the level to give the "appearance" of being under water. We want our clothes dripping wet.

リビッツを超〜速く泳がせて。

驚きの体験へ、僕たちをドブンと突き落としてください!

作成条件
ルールが変更されました:コントロールギアは、プレイヤーが乗り込まず、近くのプレイヤーがコントロールす るものならば使用可。例:リビッツが泳ぎながらL1(またはあなたが設定する好きなボタン)を押すと仕掛け のようなものが動いて、リビッツを進めたり、押したり、引いたり、引きずったり、ドロップキックしたりヘッ ドバットしたり回転させたり吹っ飛ばしたりするようにする。

・締め切り後、審査員たちは足ヒレを握りしめ、下記の基準に従ってステージを選出します。最も優れたステー ジのクリエイターには、優勝者としてピン/王冠が贈られます!

審査基準
ステージの審査は次の基準に従って行います。
・ゲームプレイ ー 楽しい要素、バランスのとれた難易度、バグや不具合のないことなどを採点 します。
・オリジナリティ ー どれだけ革新的か、素材を生かしながらいかに上手く使ってユニークなものを作ってい るか。

・参加作品はリトルビッグプラネット2でプレイ可能でなければいけません。
・応募できるステージは一つだけです。複製しての応募は失格になります。
・コンテストは2012年5月7日午前12時GMTに公式スタートとなります。それ以前にアップロードされ たステージは応募できません。
・ステージは締め切りより前に、タイトルに「(LBPC8)」を入れてアップロードしてください。締め切り 後は再アップロードをしないでください。締め切り後に再アップロードされたステージは失格となります。例外 として、ステージタイトル、ステージ説明、バッジ、およびプレイ不能になる深刻なバグに関する簡易な修正は 、コンテストクルーの事前の同意により、認められる場合があります。編集許可が必要な場合、このスレッドに 投稿し、私にPMを送ってください。

A:いいえ。
Q:前に作ったけどアップロードしてなかったステージを応募できますか?
A:はい。
Q:アップロードした後は再アップロードできますか?
A:締め切り前は何度でも再アップロードできます。締め切り後はできません。
Q:審査はいつ始まりますか?
A:審査員は締め切り前にもステージを見ることがありますが、正式な審査は締め切り後に始まります 。
Q:結果はいつ発表されますか?
A:正確にはお答えできませんが、審査が始まってから1か月後ぐらいです。

Hmm, most interesting. Breaching the surface of the water and then plunging back in? I'll bring this to the table for discussion. Excellent question!

Why wouldn't you be able to? Just bear in mind that others get more time to get used to and combat your ideas.

dang bruce, I know you create fast bud but c'mon.
It's up to you man. whenever you finish your entry, you're more than welcome to post it in this thread. Myself? I would wait to more towards the end. Just me though. Would hate to show my hand, only to be holding a pair while the other guy has a full house.




One question, though. Can you be in the air for a few seconds and then go back into water?

We think that this is a cool idea and will allow sackboy to breach the surface of the water MOMENTARILY. Not coming out of the water and landing on a platform or surface of any kind. Bouncing, flying, or thrust from the water for a couple of seconds then plunging back into the depths is perfectly acceptable to us.

That would be fine. The rules allow cutscenes.

hiyo, this is a great contest idea. water has been lacking in the lbp community.Now if only i can think of a way to move the sackboy fast..but how fast are we talking? hmmmmm i wish i could enter and finish one in time. i dont have the speed of brucelightning. haha

Creating this level seemed much easier in my head...

There are some pretty easy ways to get through water fast, but the only hard part is coming up with creative ways to do so. It's like reverting back to old LBP1 tricks and advancing on those old tricks in creative ways. Hopefully I can come up with something soon, though...

I started farting around with ideas but I don't know if I'll for sure enter this or not. Probably not. I dunno.

I haven't found any ways of making gameplay fast paced without constantly grabbing stuff or using bouncepads. Although I have found that setting the gravity higher (to 400%) makes you float upwards quite a bit faster. I dunno.

I also just generally dislike creating with water. It's soo ugly!

I always abandon levels if I can't make anything half-pretty out of 'em.

Creating this level seemed much easier in my head...

There are some pretty easy ways to get through water fast, but the only hard part is coming up with creative ways to do so. It's like reverting back to old LBP1 tricks and advancing on those old tricks in creative ways. Hopefully I can come up with something soon, though...


I started farting around with ideas but I don't know if I'll for sure enter this or not. Probably not. I dunno.

I haven't found any ways of making gameplay fast paced without constantly grabbing stuff or using bouncepads. Although I have found that setting the gravity higher (to 400%) makes you float upwards quite a bit faster. I dunno.

I also just generally dislike creating with water. It's soo ugly!

I always abandon levels if I can't make anything half-pretty out of 'em.

I actually had a few cool ideas for a visual style last night. One that would actually look nice, if I do it well enough. That should motivate me a bit.

I just gotta delete my old beginning because... It was horrid.

I also have a rough idea for what I wanna do for gameplay, but I'm still not sure if I'll enter this contest.

I create slowly and I tend to never finish levels. Plus I already have a crown, so I'd only be competing for the pin. (It is a nice looking pin though...)

nope. as David noted, Must be completely underwater. We did make the change to allow sackboy to BRIEFLY come above the water and then back in, but to remove the water will not be allowed.

I completely agree with you. I just tested a bouncepad underwater... It stinks. It's set to 4, and even though I got launched a tiny bit farther because of less gravity affect, it still slowed down right away. I tried a spinning wheel set to about 300 Speed, I let go and went a fraction of the distance I would have if I was above water. I just don't think we will be able to make a fast level underwater that works AND is fun AND is fast. Not only these reasons but sackboy floats. When you try and make a fast paced level, you need sackboy to fly around. If sackboy is trying to fly around under water, he slows down in less than a second, then floats up! This is going to be really tough. I don't think you are going to get the outcome you wanted, LBPC Crew. People are going to start giving up because it will be really tough to pull off. I, myself, am sitting out this one. I will help my friends who are trying though. Good luck to everyone entering!

Create a level experience of your choice, with intense fast gameplay, completely underwater

Step 2

Realise that "completely underwater" suggests that sackboy should be under the water rather than in it.

Step 3

Lift up the ocean

The purpose of this post is to really just prove how open these contests are... just be creative and you'll end up in a good position.

If there was no water 4 minutes would be kinda achievable, bear in mind rikiriki's kalieda level takes bout 3.45 to navigate. Water drag is the main issue. It affects trajectory in a very random manner especially when leaving an object for the next one. Basically everything has to move a lot faster and jumpads have to be set quite high to counteract the drag. and done! we'll lower the minimum time but not sure to what length yet. TBH, I don't sit there with a stop watch and go "disqualified because it was only 3.18 seconds." If the gameplay is there, you don't really notice.

why can't you use the other way? wire up a checkpoint, kill sackboy. this can be effective, And I apologize for the oversight, I completely missed that question. I will bring it up to the rest of the crew for further discussion though as it's just for teleportation purposes.

In all fairness, the contest crew are very busy people and sometimes are simply slower to reply. I did give you the same answer (pg 7) and although I'm not an official crew member... my answer is not any less valid... nobody here wants to see you disqualified so we're only going to try our best.

Also... work on cunning plan #2 has begun... but since I'm gonna use this one y'all will just have to wait and see. However one thing I did notice... no judge was against the original plan of lifting up the ocean? =p

UPDATE: Biorogue says we can't defy reality by lifting up the ocean and other such bodies of water =p Probably for the best too XD.

I have entered different enough contests in my life to say this. while it's ok maybe even good at times to think outside the box. just make sure you don't leave the box behind altogether.

if you know what a contest wants you to do. in this case they clearly want you to make a level with your sackperson in the water from the global water setting. then that means you should stick to that rule and not try to find a exploit in the words like under water. you know what they really mean. and from what i've seen in life. contests don't like people trying to use exploits. anyways i'm sure no one was being serious here and just joking around. but i am just saying this to make sure anyways. *mew

i just hd an insane idea im so in this one if it works sackboy should be at the same speed as he is when he is not in water but i also had this idea where i was wondering to ask lets say i dont want to use the air mask thing or the bubble circle things sorry i dont know the names of the pack things haha

If you scroll from right to left, the speed from left to right increases.
How do you solve vertical speed while level is scrolling from a side to another or horizontal speed if levels scrolls from top to bottom or viceversa?

In all fairness... looking at the photos the creator uploaded he doesn't have to. The pictures show clearly out of water gameplay and we were told at no point should you be out of water.

I reckon with some tweaks it could be a successful entry, so the creator shouldn't be discouraged from entering, there is still time and I believe they can do it.

I know Omega but we were told not to this time round; earlier in the thread. The only exception given was for brief pockets of air (and even then you have to remain in the water).

The only reason I'm getting involved in this is to make sure the creator doesn't get disqualified as I don't think that anyone who puts effort in should meet that fate and looking at the photos the effort is there but so is a fatal flaw. Hopefully you get my point.

Just finished my level and its coming in at, without deaths, 1 min 35 seconds. Will that be ok timewise? I've noticed too that water creates a random drag and affects sackboy differently, sometimes slowing you down too fast. Some of the speed weirdness has to do with the animation for using http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/2/21/X_button.png underwater. If Sackboy is moving through water slowly, http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/2/21/X_button.png will make him swim faster. If he is moving very quickly, http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/2/21/X_button.png will cause him to brake in a dramatic fashion. The animation initiated by http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/2/21/X_button.png continues for a second after it is released, however, so the end of the fast swim cycle can still kill his momentum even if you've released the button.

It is an interesting puzzle for players trying to swim quickly. They want to push the button to go faster but need to stop pressing it well before they get launched by whatever launch-y thing the level uses. Release too soon and it takes longer to launch... release too late and the launch is cut in half! Devious.

Well, to be be absolutely honest, someone else has already asked us about this by PM and the answer was that it would be OK. Does sound like you're not going to be the only one doing it though, lol! You'll still be in a minority I suspect.

Surely if you didn't check the copy option while publishing you're ok?

Also... you should all do what game developers do... publish it under a pseudo name (eg. Project Aqua Vita) and then switch to the LBPC8 title a few days before the deadline... this will help protect your levels from potential cheaters.

To be honest when I'm making my level, making 4 mins. is hard because I have to think of new sections and make them work. This harder for me because the way I set it up!

and done! we'll lower the minimum time but not sure to what length yet. TBH, I don't sit there with a stop watch and go "disqualified because it was only 3.18 seconds." If the gameplay is there, you don't really notice.

I answered this a few pages back. Don't focus too hard on the time limit. Can't wait to see these levels!

So many questions for such a simple request.

They want a fast paced underwater level that mirrors the "Culture Meeting" level by Riki from LBPC1 contest. So you need to use sackboy and have him fly around this level underwater really fast.


Problem is, the water is buggy as hell and without gravity, having that smooth flow is incredibly difficult.

Yeah bruce I 100% agree with you. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just a mess. I feel that this contest will have promising entries, but making it as smooth as the contest creators had expected won't be an option.

And yeah I agree about the nice new batch of solid underwater levels. I've actually been wanting to build one for a while but it's so difficult to brainstorm creative ideas that don't involve the use of gravity.

I was just wondering if fast-paced means that Sackboy himself needs to move really fast, or can you consider not letting players rest being fast-paced? I mean that Sackthing will move with its normal speed, but it will not be able to halt as something behind him forces him to go on (spikes, fire, whatever). Guys seriously. THIS is what they are looking for, just underwaterfied. Really fast moving level where things are just happening at a mind blowing pace and you need to be quick with your R1 button. Basically you shouldn't even need to use your left joystick or X button. The X button can really screw up your level underwater I noticed. People can just slow down and ruin the flow completely.

Question: Can we use copyrighted music that was remade into a sequencer? Will that hurt scoring? Would I be better off using Mm Music or creating my own unique song? I don't want to risk using the sequencer as it may inflict lag in an already laggy atmosphere (water)

Yeah same, I keep seeing that he had some "Secret Weapon" of an idea. Please divulge your secret sir. I'm actually very curious. Because I've messed about with about everything and found the only things that make sackboy go up/down fast are bouncepads, fast moving grabbable sponges + inout movers, and cake.

Cake tends to make sackboy move exceptionally quickly in whichever direction it is placed... not sure why.. still running tests on this

Question: Can sackboy come out of the water for the scoreboard?

Obviously I could of just given the prize to 2nd place... but that wouldn't be as good as them winning so... and thats all based on a theoretical win anyway which is unlikely.

Interesting Discovery for those creators out there who, like myself, have been underwater for quite some time now.


Movers have a max speed underwater of around 15. Anything above that does not effect it's speed. I ran tests with objects and found that objects with speed 20 and speed 100 moved at the exact same slow speed as eachother underwater. But above water, both these speeds moved much faster.

In short: Avoid left/right movers... they weren't designed correctly to be used underwater.

This is seriously a tough one. I honestly haven't even started on a level yet. I do have one idea, but it just seems like an underwater edition of a level thats already out there, and im not sure if its enough to make it unique.

Yup clocked it just now at 45 seconds if I don't make any player mistakes. Only 50% of my level is complete. And thermo is sitting at a hot 65%

Times like this i wish this game were on PC....

Yes. As stated in the guidelines, You are allowed quick cutscenes.

@moose6293 yeah I just come on here everytime I take a break from creating. Working underwater for an extended period of time isn't good for my sanity... it's...it's creepy down there!

I've noticed when ever I create that my thermo doesn't fill, is that normal I have a huge level and it is 1/4 and I finished my main gameplay. Just need to add what makes it fast.

Take a picture using your popit (Or start menu picture option) then find that picture, export it to HDD. Now turn off LBP2. Go to your pictures and Copy those pictures to a flash drive. Put your flash drive in your computer, upload... put them on photobucket or some photo hosting site. THen use the IMG file and post it in a thread to show off your level.


There.. that's how I do it. Very tedious process but worth it.

I wouldn't recommend this way because the resolution of the image is poor if taken from the website. Also, David's method can only be done with a published level. If you want to show sneak peeks of your level without having actually published it then use my method.

That's not true. The guide I posted explains how to increase quality and can be done from an unpublished level.

What you're going to need to do to make it better looking is to look at the areas in red...

...and change them to what is highlighted blue, changing
fl to ft enlarges the image and changing jpg to pngenhances the quality of it too.

and it doesn't have to be a publish level. You can take a picture of your pod and post it to LBP.me, you can take pictures of things on your moon and post it. where are you getting your info?
