Photoshop, How I Love You [Live Stream Tonight, Requests Open]

I'm off of work from now, till this Sunday, then from Sunday, through the whole launch week of LBP2. So I figured I might as well spend that time doing something productive, especially now that my LBP1 prep is pretty much done. Lets try to make some people happy, ah?
My only preference when doing requests, is that I get a sample picture of what you'd like me to mess around with, or at least a general idea of what you want. If you could provide me with an entire concept of what you want, go for it, would make me happy to try my best.
But hey, if you just say "A want a cat. With sparkly stuff. And some glitters. With snakes!" Then ok. That's fine too.

[Note: My signatures probably are not the best things on the internet and what I consider to be my best work is not appropriate for this forum as they contain slight nudity. (I suppose I could censor them, but sigs don't look as good with a bar running over them, and even then, still probably not appropriate.) ]

4 choices for Hakz, all still have PSDs, so fully editable. Took me longer than I expected because I'm stupid and forgot to grab all my old brushes and presets from before I reinstalled the laptop. But everything is fine now more or less.
So Hakz, if you have any comments on anything share it, can fix it quick. If you wanted something different, or like something, let me know. Tried some different stuff for these.

Now, I messed up a bit on the animated version, because the pattern I use for the second style (with the scan lines) I can't put on anymore, but I can just remake the whole gif, which would just take about 3 minutes, if you want me to? That's if you even want it like that to begin with or like what this version looks like.

FOREVA-DEAD, you're awesome with that picture. Will get on it soon, I figure the hearts in the eyes can light on and off. Think that should be a good one!

Foreva, this is what I have so far:
As usual, 2 styles to choose from.

I'm having a surprisingly hard time trying to come up with a unique background, but it's probably just because I'm tired. Could do pink and black thing, but I'm not sure how you'd like that. (It's fantastic for me, but not for most sackboys...)

Not a problem at all.
Tools..? If you mean what I think you do, then 90% of them are a fair use of stamped abstract/ vector brushes, tons of layers, the pen tool to cut pictures out, a lot of selective coloring (blending options for layers), lots of filters - particularly distort, sharpen, and sometimes render, and a LOT of CTRL+Z to step back a step.. or 10. CTRL+T is a great shortcut too for resizing things. specially to make them smaller.

Besides that the fonts of course and I learned how to do everything on my own after about a month or so of really studying and then guiding myself with tutorials on the internet on how to make specific looking signatures. Once I learned all of the stuff behind it, it sort of came easy to me and now a days I can usually whip up a decent anime one with an abstract background within 10 minutes. So a ton of practice helps I guess.		2011-01-15 04:44:00

Thanks, I'm just happy that people actually like em. Putting a lot of it out actually makes me nervous, and actually making people stuff makes me really nervous. Even though it's just forum signatures.. Maybe I'm weird I don't know... Ah well, off to bed.

WOW! i love them, they're awesome! but LBPC keeps shrinking them and removing the animation

I hate to ask, but do you think you could make one the same with a checked black/white/grey background thats at an angle and fades out with squares missing, if you get what i mean, that would be awesome. if you dont have the time thats fine, i just so greatful with the ones you've already made, thank you so much, you're awesome!		2011-01-15 10:02:00

Ah, another signature making person Thank you thank you, looks like you're well off yourself. It's fun making people happy!

You know... Something I've always wanted to do was a sig making battle, but instead of us making random signatures for ourselves, we'd be making signatures for other people.
So it would work like this; An agreed on odd number puts up acceptable requests for signatures, people like us go off to make them, and in a day or two put em up, to be judged by people. I thought it would be fun at least...

Bah, anyway, back to trying to figure out Zac's sig. It might be up late tomorrow, because I do have work tomorrow till about 5pm. So will be dead tired by the time I get home.		2011-01-16 01:31:00

Its wonderful to see more talent here on these forums. The LBPC community is so artistic. Your signatures are very well done, and I love the animated details you've put into them. So, I was wondering.... if I could please have a signature.

You definitely don't have to do it if you don't want to, as my request may be a bit larger than the others, and for that I'm sorry.

But....... could I request.... a signature with three of my Sackboys in it? Is that too many? And I'm sorry if these pictures are in a horrible resolution, or are hard to edit, but this was the best I could do:

Ah, I got a compliment from a real artist. Thank you very much for that compliment, the most enjoyable part for me is when people actually like them. I don't know how people like you do it.. Not a chance I could handle that.
But anyway, I'll try to get together a competent description for a thread, see who would like to take part in that. I think it would be fun, especially leading up to LBP2. Get the creative juices flowing.

Ok, I'm going to say a good 80% of the past hour as been spent trying to get this signature to work. I'm so sorry Josh, but I'm just failing immensely at what should be the most simplest task. I get what you want, I totally do, I see it in my head, but getting it down to photoshop and making it work is just not happening!

booXely! Is this ok? When you said splash I thought of vector splashes, not literal paint-canvas splashes. Kept it happy with the colors, but the background can always be changed quickly and without problem.

Thanks! The original negative sig had like.. 5 pictures I took of him hidden everywhere, but that was just a little too much of him. Became a collage of Negativitron.
I'm glad you liked Shadow's signature, I got used to it, since I didn't really like it at first. Mostly because the style was so different. Might have to try it again soon sometime.

So, 30 minutes into making the signature, I have what follows below. There is no cannon ball and it's a freeze frame of a it firing, with the explosion made from scratch. I decided not to include the cannon ball, because after playing with it a bit, it just never looked right. This isn't at all final and if you want more/ want tweaks to it, just let me know so I can get to them. Or you can take it as is.

I wouldn't suggest it, it tends to go over badly around here. I would suggest looking around at all the art threads and picking the one you want and waiting for requests to open and request one. There are other artists than those three. Me for example.		2011-01-29 21:44:00

I just can't rely on sites because it's so hard to find pictures that aren't generic, like the Tekken and DMC pictures. So just took that trusty pen tool and carved away.. used to take 30 minutes, but it was so very worth it.

Hmm... well, yer work 'round these here parts remind me of an ol' fellar who used to mozy 'round LBPC long ago... in fact, he designed my current signature. But now that's I've had this 'round for about a year now... 'bout time to spruce it up a bit.

I still like the initial concept of the signature, but I feel that it's starting to "age" a bit, especially when compared with others. I'd interpret this more of a "touch-up" if anything, but of course it'd look completely different xD.

In the sig, I definitely need some sort of firearm referencing to myself/ my character, Outlaw-Jack (Old West, 1840's-1910's). Something like an old revolver (http://johno.myiglou.com/images/lemat2.jpg) or a Winchester rifle (http://thecowboyoutpost.com/ESW/Images/1873_rifle.jpg?xcache=1367) or, why, even a gatling gun (http://www.nps.gov/spar/historyculture/images/IMG_2682.JPG) or cannon (http://files.myopera.com/musickna/albums/610181/Civil%20War%20cannon.jpg) (these are all reference pics; you don't need to use them, and I prefer the rifle or revolver; oh, and you don't need to squeeze them all in! that'd be too much xD). The BG can be any sort of Western- or zombie-esqe thing, and the colors should be more earthy or dark, like browns and grays and blacks (and maybe even orange & red). I really like the text used in my old sig, so if you can get anything close to that, it'd be much appreciated (but it's completely up to you; don't wanna pressure you).

And really, this WHOLE SIGNATURE is up to you and how you wanna design it. As long as it's Western related and has something to reference to my stance as an outlaw and/or zombie, it's all good. Will appreciate it if you accept.

Hmm... I find it funny how I have something to say for each one. xD

In the first one, the BG feels a little "flat", if y'know what I'm sayin'. BUT, that gun you used is GOREGOUS. Aaand I like how you've also incorporated another memorable catchphrase, in a "Playbill"-styled text, in there as well. (Oh, and the color for the id is the best out of the 3, methinks.)

In the second one, I can tell that you tried staying close with the original design. Though the gun has nothin' on the first pic, the BG is definitely the standout on here. It's gritty and hardcore, and I like how you kept the diagonal lines. The bright color in the BG clashes a little with the rest of the more warmer tones, but to me, it's the best BG so far.

In the third one, it actually somewhat confused me a little bit, especially with the choice of using a hand-drawn character in addition to the gun. The colors feel pretty dry to me, and just doesn't catch my attention. This is probably my least favorite of the three, but maybe it's because it's quite a different take compared to the other two. I thought it was cool how you incorporated the id into it, and the slogan up top has nice colors.

If I were to go with one right now, I'd choose #1, because that gun is really cool and that catchphrase is, well, "catchy" xD. But, since these are "drafts", I guess that they aren't final. I like #1's gun & catchphrase and #2's BG. If you can (and I definitely know you're capable) somewhat "merge" those two ideas together, and maybe try blending the colors of all of the BGs and ID's together (or try finding a happy medium), that'd be PERFECT.

I love what you've produced so far (as well as the Apple Jack sig xD; very cute ), and I can't WAIT to see what you come up with now.

((Aaaaaaand I'll take one of these sigs rite nao as a stand-in... hehehehehehe.

Best reply so far there Outlaw. I like how you know exactly what you want and are able to critique very well too.
So here are two second drafts. Blended the two together, one more leaning toward one BG, the other toward the other BG. I'm not too happy with the text right now and plan to keep working with it. But it's just hard to get gradients to work right some times.

Alrighty. THESE are more of what I'm hoping for.

In the top one, the BG is better. It has more of a vibrancy to it, and goes well with accenting the other items on there. But, those items (gun, phrase, id) feel a little more "bland", compared to the other. That, and it seems that the clarity on the gun is abit blurrier.

On the second, the text and gun look better. The gun is shinier and clearer, and feels more vibrant. The choice of color for the text feels more suitable, and is easier to read compared to the other. But, the BG feels, like the items in the first one, bland. And it seems that it somewhat blends the text in if you don't see that well (particularly out of my left eye).

I'm pretty sure that the next one will (finally) be the final. The top's BG and the bottom's gun & text are the parts I'd keep... but modify. I'm thinking of the BG's color to be more orange-ish and "sunset"-ish, maybe fading into a darker orange or red or dark purple/black. For the text, I'd want it to stand out a little more than the rest, so maybe a more bolder/brighter orange or gold-ish color would work. And, when looking back at my old one, I liked how the text on the ID faded into a bloody red near the bottom, giving it a "bleeding" effect. If you're capable of doing it, that'd be awesome; I'll fully understand if that'd be too much work for yah.

And really, I don't wanna overwork you, and I'm sure others are wanting their signatures to be done too eventually xD. As long as you're not stressing yourself and having fun, that's really all I care about. A nice challenge for a capable artist.

Now don't worry about over working me Outlaw, and I don't have anything more productive to do at the moment. This is giving me some needed real practice at making signatures to specific requests, while also providing with great feedback. Getting the specifics down is just fun to me, so no stress at all. Whoa O_o. Now that's REALLY close to what I'm envisioning.

The gun is PERFECT, so no need for adjustment there. And really, everything else looks very professional. The only specifics I can give on this is the colours. For the BG, try mixing in some brown and a little red or purple; it would give it more of a "gritty" and Western-ish look. I'm thinking also that the gray area around the ID could be darkened a tad, to give some more emphasis to the name. And, for the colours in the ID and text, I think a bolder/darker orange would make it perfect (maybe even switch-up the color of the quote text to a red); I'm lovin' the bleeding effect on the ID, so just modify the orange part.

Uh... yeah... I like the way you put it. Like that only better, lol.
That's what I was thinking as far as the path (following the swirl), but if we could get the shape to look more like it's getting sucked down into it, that would be sweet. For what it's worth, I know your requests are mounting, and when I worked on my current sig, that was my biggest challenge - trying to warp the text into the vortex without warping it beyond recognition. I mean, in the end I still want it to be easily readable, y'know?

EDIT: I wonder... would it work better if the image were flipped so the swirl (and thus the word v0rtex) were coming in from the left? Then the tail of the X could be getting sucked in. I think it might be easier to pull that off than trying to warp the V. What do you think?		2011-03-03 08:09:00

Like clock gears moving around etc. There's a font called verne on fontcraft, but it costs money, so forget it. But if you could find one that is similar, that would be great.

That's what I was thinking as far as the path (following the swirl), but if we could get the shape to look more like it's getting sucked down into it, that would be sweet. For what it's worth, I know your requests are mounting, and when I worked on my current sig, that was my biggest challenge - trying to warp the text into the vortex without warping it beyond recognition. I mean, in the end I still want it to be easily readable, y'know?

EDIT: I wonder... would it work better if the image were flipped so the swirl (and thus the word v0rtex) were coming in from the left? Then the tail of the X could be getting sucked in. I think it might be easier to pull that off than trying to warp the V. What do you think?

Hey Vortex, requests have been a bit scattered lately, been trying to slowly work toward the final result of your sig, but now I might just redo it completely. Got a few ideas for ya.

I'm off to work right now, but look for tomorrow to possibly have a livestream of some sig making, either for requests or myself. Whatever is left really. If you have a request that has not been done in awhile, look for it to be done tomorrow or tonight for sure. I get off late tonight, so.. maybe just tomorrow.		2011-03-12 20:35:00

Hiya.

Could you be the awesomest thing ever and make me a sig?

I'm aproaching "Veteranship", (in about 4 months ) and I think it's about time I done got myself a Signature.

I'd like it to be my avatar pic (if you can't work with it being so small I can probably get it into BitMap form) with My PSN to My sackpersons left looking all epic. And anything else you'd think of to make me awesome.
