Beta Community Levels (videos)

Archive: 851 posts

As many of you know, the NDA for the LBP2 beta is now no more, so we're allowed to share videos and talk about stuff from the beta. Here are some YouTube links full of Community Levels and other Beta goodness:

ChimpanzeePS3 (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8EA2AB5CF203E951)
Sackinima (http://www.youtube.com/user/Sackinima)
LBPodcast (http://www.youtube.com/thelittlebigpodcast)

Enjoy!

Oh, are we now? Well, if this is true, then WOOT! If it is not true, then FOR SHAME!

Also, if it is, might want to wite, "It's now OK by the NDA" in the title or something like that...because people may not want to check this out if they think it is breaking rules and might just report you.

Yeah, it's true.

I'm still waiting for access to the beta forums here despite sending a screenshot of the email invite a few days ago. Seems pointless now.

All the Create mode beta Vids that exist right now are by n00bs, no microchips, logic, or anything in em!

Hey guys, first post here.

I was gonna upload some create mode gameplay. Well, actually a time lapse of me creating Stereo/mono, but YouTube decided to throw an error at me at 99% uploaded, so now I'm re-uploading. I'll be sure to post it here once it's done.

If the NDA was lifted, does that mean you don't have to be 18 to receive the beta when it hits NA? Because if you STILL have to be 18 to receive the beta after they have removed the non-disclosure agreement...there is no excuse, it would be the most pointless thing ever...

On separate note, these levels I am seeing are awesome! The one that really made me smile was the music video one though. The whole time i thought I was watching a trailer.

Glad you liked it! Total time hour wise, I'd have to say... 18 for the ZoE stage and 12 for the SF stage. And that's with cutting out all the non-productive time, lol.

As for the ZoE level fun factor, I guess if you can keep up with the camera, you're golden. I've made some adjustments that haven't been implemented to help alleviate the camera problems, which can be seen in this vid here!

Heres something from me I made Tetris

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmqsBrorPfQ

It's little buggy and likes to overheat when you fill up whole thing but as you see its playable. Contains Co-Op mode where players cycle to control the pieces (hot seat), but due intense logic it lags havely in online so it's better to play it local.
I must say making tetris physics in LBP2 is quite challenging and if you use physical materials you need to keep calibrate or less block stuck. when game gonna out i try to make Tetris based on holograms that needs more work due walking thru objects.

Sorry about quality but i got only SD mini DV camera (also YouTube still process my video)

Sadly no, LBP1 ones are visible but when you turn them on they silance, but they probably want to lbp2 beta download to be much compact as possible.

There's no option in the BETA to record voices, that's why. But it'll be an option in the full game if I'm right

EDIT: OMG this looks cool, sackboy transforms into a giant sackbot and then when he needs to go thru small gaps melts away back to sackboy and then runs thru tunnel and at the end turn back to giant! no idea how done.

Why must there be a month between them. That rpg looks great. It's just in the beta and you can do that. I can't remember my link but the "I gotta feeling..." level is great.

The actual time lapse part starts at 3:44

Did anyone notice the end thermo with how much wiring and logic there was? :kz:

not even half way! *speachless*

That video is old (it was posted before NDA was lifted)

Here is the update with items that are actually selectable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfdOfklL9v4
So does anyone know how he makes the sackbot equip any combination of items? The only way I can think of is a different sackbot for each possible combination of armor/weapon/etc. That would not be an ideal solution either :/

Awesome stuff Fyshokid. You have a great eye for that kind of stuff.

Here's another vid, but strictly music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mdVpPcpLbk

Awesome! They must have a variety of instruments on their to create that kinda sound.

But two questions:

1. What's the highest note resolution for the sequencer. (like 16th notes? 32th notes? 64th notes please!?)

2. How long can a song be?

Hopefully I'll be able to get my Sacky Potter demo level finished tonight. It's got a couple of unique features - you can switch which of 3 sackbots you control, which works with multiple players; and the level is made from seperate 'rooms', allowing visual trickery of a 3D free roaming environment. Or at least, it appears that you're able to enter rooms through doorways in the back walls of the level. 2010-09-21 18:15:00

The beta is incredible! the community did some amazing stuff already.
Personally i have been working on a calculator:
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/6712/aphoto9.jpg

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/1192/aphoto8a.jpg

(There is a glitch in the beta where you can make your actual sackboy look like a sackbot!)

The community features are awesome and it's easier to find good levels now.
The new sackbots and cutscenes add much more personality to levels and it's a lot of fun, can't wait to see what people do with this
Oh and there is a LBP2 version of the 3D glitch

I wonder if they will make the look like a sackbot thing a costume. Especially if your head spins when you get slapped like sackbots do. Then I really want it!

Can you control how hard/far you throw something with the Power Gloves? Because in the Cave of New Beh'Ta video, when Sackboy was trying to get that blue block into the blue spot, he wasnt throwing as hard as he was originally.

Not really. From what I've seen, all Sackbots die after even touching water. They also make an semi-annoying little squeaky noise when they walk around.
Both not really a big deal, but I wish there was an option to turn them off.

It is really spectacular, there is a lot of interesting things in the video like:

All the layers behind the front thick layer are blurred (most probably to give the illusion of more distance/depth).

The sackbot has a falling, leaping kind of jump.

The sackbot (right after entering the DCS) does a "reset/change my costume" animation.

Any chance you could make a small video showing off that song, "Into the Sunset" you made? I looked up the original and was really surprised how accurate it was. To be honest, I kind of like the version you made a little better because it sounds a little lo-fi and 8-bit.

OK i tried it now and you can keep sackbots back into those layers by setting them not to switch layers. They work like any other material, so you can emit them into the back or front layers the same way in LBP1. But putting a wall results in them being killed, sadly. And they seem to be running on ice and can't jump (gonna try something to still if you can get them to jump). Setting them to "act" results in them running back in the normal layers and oh, they run back regardless if they're standing still or if the game is paused (unless you have allow layer changing to off).

When you talk about movement, is it their own movement or movement through the controlinator? Can they still move though, left to right? And what does it look like if it's right back say 20 layers, and then pops back into the real layers, is it instant or does it take time?

they don't seem to move by themselves, even if you set them to. The movement being played through the controlinator.
They don't snap back into the normal layer instant, imagine switching layers, you know how sackboy does that hop/skip? That's what they do to return back into the normal layers.

I could imagine some gameplay ideas how you could emit a sackbot into the background and then he will run down (or hop, you could probably make it seem like stairs) until his onto the normal layers. I would imagine people using sackbots in the background for some good, but there lack of jumping and slipper movement would probably make it hard to do. Kudos to anybody who figures out how to use them really well.

Also, you can infact still slap them 10 layers back.

ok, so can you make a Sackbot spawn in one of those back layers? and if yes, couldn't you have several respawning one after the other to have sackbots marching towards you constantly? now could you then use other things as sackbots and perhaps create a FPS that actually seems to move forward?

Have you tried adding a follower onto the bot, with the ability to move up and down?
You could probably have a fairy sackbot that follows you in a 3D forground layer, allowing you to use all 3 normal layers without worrying about collisions!

You could but it leaves behind a front block, which i assume you can replace with invisible hologram material (I LOVE THAT MATERIAL).

I'm looking into everything I can do. I started looking into movement with holograms and ended up making a road for a First person racer, hah. I actually think I could develop that into a full level. I was thinking like a super futurist racer like F-Zero or Wipeout.

No i haven't but i see no reason why it wouldn't work.
Great for making party room or something with sackbots in the background, or a street where and your on one side of the road, and you can see sackbots walking on the other (though the buildings would probably stop the sackbots in their tracks since they work the same as any glitched background material.

Here's a little mini-game I made which uses the sackbots as enemies:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHuK4UZ_ltw

Also, I'll upload a video later today with the songs.
The song on here sounds a little like the Duck Tales tune when you're on the moon level. That's neat.

they don't seem to move by themselves, even if you set them to.

EXCELLENT!!!

There's a section in Metal Gear Solid 2 at the start, where you come in from the rain, Snake sees this shadow of a soldier around the corner. Using the glitch you can make the "round the corner" part, but obviously you can't make anything realistic to move down it. But now you can have the soldier come down it, Snake can take care of him, then have a cut scene of Snake walking passed the window, cut back to a new SackBot standing at the top of the corridor. You can then move him to the left behind the wall, another cut scene shows the stairs, but when you cut back it's a new location, a new SackBot Snake standing next to the stairs.

It may sound confusing but basically it looks like Snake has come through the door, travelled the 3 layers, then a soldier has come down the glitch layers into the normal layers, then a cut scene makes it look like Snake has then walked up the glitch layers and around the corner! MAGIC!!! And then if you wanted to you could come back around the corner and see him come from the glitch layer to the normal layer! MAGIC!!! AGAIN!!!

Two more questions, can you rig it so you can turn the option for changing layers on and off with the touch of a button? (If you can't then what I've just said is stupid But I think you can using two brain chips) and what happens if the floor is rubber does it still slip about?

Good find cliffbo, it's great to see you change change the direction of animated materials

But anyway, it's too bad sackbots gets electrified by touching water. I hope they make a setting later on if they haven't already because it might be cool for an underwater level, you could have some mermaids or maybe a team of scuba divers underwater, idk. Also, I hope it's okay if you answer this question but, I know for sackbots, you can record what they do with a direct control seat connected to circuit boards(I think) and there are different animations that come with sackbots. I know one of the animations is the zombot, but I don't think I know the rest if there are more that you get. If so, could you share these other animations or talk about them to us

I hate you... I could worship you but I'm too proud to do so The second one is my favorite. And they don't even take up much space. I really should try the Sequencer, I'd like to make classical musics, less electronic.

The only things that ticks me off is the noise the piano makes each time you move the cursor to pick a new note. You can easily loose the thread of your melody... I can't manage to make a proper music like that.

This video can be found buried among the collected works linked in another post, but it's so amazingly good and well polished that I think it deserves special attention, lest anybody miss it. The Ancient Cave capitalizes on many of the new features of LBP2 to create a beautiful, story-driven game play experience, and Luos gives the player fresh challenges involving in the grappling hook, the power gloves, the sackbots, and even some newly possible score-driven logic. It all comes off looking more like a showcase level brought back from the future, rather than anything like a gimmicky beta level. There's also great use of the new materials, sounds, and decorations to detail the world and really bring the atmosphere to life. And the fact that Luos built it up from scratch in the couple weeks since the beta was unleashed is all the more impressive. Alex Evans has been fond of saying that the new tools will allow expert creators to work much more quickly, and leave them more time to polish their creations. This level is great evidence to that effect, and bodes exceedingly well for the good things to come.

It seems like at this rate we're going to have many tens of videos showing up during the beta, most of which are likely to have been made in under a day, and it would be nice to have a way to showcase the more polished and elaborate creations like Luos's Ancient Cave. Maybe a single showcase thread or some special mention in the OP here?

No.

That is to say that some levels are better than others, which won't happen. Made in under a day does not imply a lack of polish, for what it's worth.

(those are premade models of Corrptor and Drones units)

Yeah piano sound seems to be the only normal one! I wanted to include the electric guitar, but they all sound so tinny... need some decent distortion effects imo.

So guys... for now on you can watch TV in LBP2 ^^

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xfhkbnk5cfs

This is tech demo of intense use of holograms in serfice, also:

-Fully generated screen static noise matrix, single pixels of it can be also used in realistic blinking stars
-Use of magic mouths output, making this looks power point presentation (you don't need to use holograms but practicly everything)
-Each channels are in single microchip and being simply activated by selector, all autoresets and can be repeated how many times you want!
-I'm also proud of my self of turn off on blinks ^^
-Show how you can make jokes about beta and LBP2 delay, so far from reviews people like humor of them

If you can't read whats on video, turn HD and wait when YouTube fully process my video (it's fresh)

Jack showed me this earlier and some of this stuff is very nice, although we've known about this being possible for quite some time (see the game jam vids and the starfox shooter)so i'll move to everything else. If any other mods want to merge it with any other beta vid threads im not familiar with then feel free.

Edit: actually, cba to move it, seems like it's media enough to stay.

At this point it's probably worth mentioning that its possible to accurately animate holograph material at 30fps, which means you can get significantly slicker animations than what are shown here (i'm guessing this is either 10 or 15 fps, depending on what technique they've used) and really opens up the posiblities for animation techniques, which will be awesome in the hands of skilled animators.

It's all put on the sequencer with timers linked to pieces of holo.
All the holo pieces are on top of each other in the same place, turning on and off. :>

don't just discount this as just another video of :insert verb:, that first video was wonderfully done and is the first indication of what artists can do with technology. if there was ever going to be another niche club in the LBP community, then this type of animation is certainly a big contender2010-10-03 19:49:00

Indeed! I was hoping to experiment with this at some point myself for some holographic screen ship diagnostic stuff (and a few other things I'd rather not mention until I get around to them), but wasn't aware that we might be able to animate to this degree. 30fps is more than enough to accomplish some pretty amazing cycles.

It's far too daunting a task to try and animate anything too crazy IMO, but I'm sure someone out there will try to take this to the next level.

a animating tool as DLC would be a welcome addition MM

or perhaps the community will make one

Yeah, this new animation technique will be really cool to play with. I can't wait to get my hands on the game to try it out!2010-10-03 20:14:00

I did a quick 5 min experiment to prove the 30 hz sequencing was possible just before i went away, but i have no confidence in my ability to animate sequences at this kind of framerate - or at all. I also think there is a simpler way that I'll investigate in the next couple of days and post ack results.2010-10-03 20:18:00

WOW....
Looks like its just holo set to timers, not that hard...
(Thats what it LOOKS like anyway (with the small ones at the end))

Great work rtm, can't wait to see the results of your testing. 2010-10-04 01:21:00

OK, the easier method turned out to be not so easy (surprise surprise) and works out way more thermo inefficient. The primary method suffers from the awkwardness of the latency bug which is now apparently fixed, but we may well not be seeing said fix in the beta.

Well my simpler method turned out to be trash, and my original method is really, really unstable (due to a particular bug in beta that we are unlikely to see a fix for until release). However, I thought up and even simpler method, that requires use of a single select switch and that's all! All you have to do is to wire each output (n) of the select into input (n+1). The system neatly adds in the 1/30 seconds delay and creates a progression @ 30Hz. The only downside is that it's not possible to stop on a particular frame and then continue (although it's possible to set specific breakpoints I think), but you can get it to play once, loop until a stop signal is sent and then restart from frame 1, etc. I'm quite chuffed tbh.

So, who wants to make the slickest animations LBP has ever seen?
