LBP Delayed... Worldwide..

Archive: 377 posts

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/10/17/littlebigplanet-delayed-in-europe/

From PS3 Fanboy:

"Uh-oh. LittleBigPlanet was due for release next week in Europe. Looks like plans are changing. According to GI.biz, Media Molecule's game is being recalled, and a new release date will be announced shortly. "Retailers are estimating the game may be delayed by three weeks until November 14."

According to our tipster Topsu, the cause for the delay may be due to a a song in the game's soundtrack, which quotes the Quran. Use of religious text in the game may be considered insensitive to some. We're currently investigating this story, and we'll update when we find out more."

Sucks...

The quote from gameindustry

The game was due for release next week, October 24, but now some retailers are estimating the game may be delayed by three weeks until November 14.

However, GamesIndustry.biz understands that the title may not suffer such a long delay to retail, and a new date is expected to be announced by Sony shortly.

So we only hope that it's not going to be like this.
I won't believe anything until it's from an official source.

Curious, would this recall affect all of Europe? In other words, will the UK be affected as well? I only ask because I was under the impression the PSN Stores were split up between the UK and then the rest of Europe. Is this the case?2008-10-17 16:09:00

It's been updated.

14th is the new date.

I quit LBP. I'm not buying it.

EDIT :

Blame this SOB :

To: Sony Computer Entertainment & Media Molecule

While playing your latest game, "LittleBigPlanet" in the first level of the third world in the game (titled "Swinging Safari", I have noticed something strange in the lyrics of the music track of the level. When I listened carefully, I was surprised to hear some very familiar Arabic words from the Quran. You can listen to part of the track here:

mt14.quickshareit.com/share/p...lip22503c0.wav

The words are:

1- In the 18th second: "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death&apos.

2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: "كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish&apos.

I asked many of my friends online and offline and they heard the exact same thing that I heard easily when I played that part of the track. Certain Arabic hardcore gaming forums are already discussing this, so we decided to take action by emailing you before this spreads to mainstream attention.

We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending. We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it.

We would also like to mention that this isn't the first time something like this happened in videogames. Nintendo's 1998 hit "Zelda: Ocarina of Time" contained a musical track with islamic phrases, but it was removed in later shipments of the game after Nintendo was contacted by Muslim organizations. Last year, Capcom's "Zack & Wiki" and Activision's "Call of Duty 4" also contained objectionable material offensive to Muslims that was spotted before the release of the final games, and both companies thankfully removed the content.

We hope you act immediately to avoid any confusion and unnecessary controversy, and we thank you for making such an amazing game.

Regards,
yasser

There is now an update to that story:

"Update: The game is officially delayed until November 14th, and any copies that are already at retail are most likely being called back. A post on the PlayStation forums discusses the questioned song in detail."

Sucks is definitely not the word I would use. But I'm sure there are filters around, so I'll just second that.

I checked on amazon.ca, and either the delay and recall will not affect Canada, or amazon has not yet been notified.

Still, I can't believe that a game such as this one would be delayed (at what cost, I ask?) because of something that should be changeable by way of a downloadable patch, if there is something to change anyway.

Please keep us posted.

Oh well I guess I'll get it over night from PlayAsia or Amazon if this is the case.

Guys, I just found this. Good news...

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-216499.aspx

DarkZero: As some of you may have noticed both Asda and Zavvi have recently changed their date for the Euro release of LittleBigPlanet, with the game now bearing a November 14 date instead of the October 24th date we've all being expecting.

Thankfully, it seems this is not the case at all, as Sony have confirmed to us that "the UK release date for LittleBigPlanet is confirmed as 24th October," so it seems both sites somehow got their dates mixed up.

Wikipedia's release dates are:

NA: October 21st
PAL: October 22nd
JP & Asia: October 30th
UK & IRL: November 14th

I wonder if this is accurate? If so, why is the UK narrowed out?

EDIT: LOL. Wow. Thanks Forsaken.

It's a bit odd that Sony would deny a delay and less then a day later delay it.

Though this could be because SCEE and the other branches don't actually send each other information.

Sigh... oh well I'm used to Sony giving sub-par service to Europeans at this stage... what else is new. The question is why I still buy their products...

Ah it's not all that big of a deal, for me anyway. I have no holidays until just before Christmas so I'll probably just end up getting it when I get off for the holidays instead of on release. I'll have exams and assignments and stuff up until Christmas and I'll rarely be home with my PS3 for the weekend.

Anyway importing it will be cheaper and get here quicker than waiting to buy it on release day here.

Europeans - import the game from here if you wish to get it before the European release date:

http://www.videogamesplus.ca/product_info.php?products_id=14364

You'll get it sooner and cheaper than if you waited until Nov. 14th.

Note - Any DLC will need to be downloaded from the US store. Including paid-for content. Make sure you have the means to buy items from the US store.

Source: http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/10/17/confirmed-littlebigplanet-delayed-over-quran-expressions-scee-makes-statement/

Update: Sony?s just confirmed that all discs are to be recalled on a global level. Hit this.

SCEE has just confirmed that LittleBigPlanet has slipped because ?the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur?an? in one of the licensed background tracks, but has not supplied a new release date.

The game was previously scheduled for an October 24 release.

VG247 has learned that the game is already at retail in both the UK and other European countries.

Heavy speculation has surrounded a slip this afternoon.

Sony just issued a statement on the matter:

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur?an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

We?ll confirm the new launch date shortly.

It's unclear at the moment if this means the game is to be completely recalled.

What exactly would a recall entail? I've actually got my copy in hand, am going to have to send it back? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question!

I'm surprised they aren't just patching it and removing it from future disks like most games would, it's going to cost them a lot of money to re-burn all those disks, right?

Same here. And although it sounds sad to say it, i think it will take a hell of a lot more than 3 weeks. The music will have to be changed, new ones licensed, then it will have to go through QA, republishing and then going gold all again. I could see it taking a month minimum. Oh well. At least we arent sony. All those Blu-Ray discs going to waste...

Honestly guys, no matter what, you shouldn't really get too discouraged by this. It'll delayed by a week or 2. SURE, we were veeeeeeery close 'till release but...There's really nothing you can do about it now.
Most of us have waited a whole year for this game. Some months. I'm sure you'll survive a week more than the official release date.

I'm wondering if they can simply release a patch. Can you specifically censor someone's music like that? I mean, there's technically nothing being said that should be censored. At the end of the day, Media Molecule would be censoring artistic freedom. How ironic...

I really am bummed about this. They shouldn't recall it however. Just fix future copies; it's unacceptable for a company - SCEE in this case - to eat all of those costs when it should be perfectly acceptable to simply address future instances of the song.

It has nothing to do with Media Molecule. It is all Sony. 2008-10-17 17:48:00

It's just data feed being wrong is what I've heard. I swear though, if this gets delayed by another 3 weeks, Sony are gonna have such a bad earful, something they've never heard the likes of.

I probably won't buy it if it takes another 3 weeks. Not being funny, but I have mocks, revision, wayy too much to play some game that Sony (yet again) turned into another bloody corporate pet.

You are sad if you refuse to buy it because it is delayed. Did you have any interest in the game to begin with? The date of the game doesn't change how fun the game will be.

And yes, sony will eat **** from gamers because of this, but it's better to eat some from a minority than getting a whole religion on your back asking for you to remove the game completly.

That's MUCH more worse than when the manchester church asked Sony to pull back Resistance.

Anyone have a way I can contact media molecule and try to persuade them to bring back the beta?

Media Molecule have no control over the beta, it was all sony's work
But someone should make a petition to send to sony saying they should just make a patch

I don't think they'll scrap some millions of dollars. They might just hold away the game until a patch is made. They must have printed millions of copies, and they were already shipped all around the world. Calling them back would be very expensive, and they would need to reprint the game and reship it. I don't think they'll take that solution, because it would be way too expensive for them. Better go to court and get sued for millions of dollars than wasting millions of dollars AND making gamers mad.

We learnt yesterday that there is a lyric in one of the licensed tracks which some people may find offensive, and which slipped through the usual screening processes. Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no on-line was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon.

So MM made a patch but sony rejected it. Source: http://n4g.com/ps3/News-217320.aspx

according to sony, that isnt 'possible' as there are some who dont have online access so will be stuck with the offending material. A bit ridiculous to be honest, but there you go.

As far as I'm aware and seeing it, the thread still is n the News section and stickied for that matter? Am I missing something?

Because Sony would be the one sued, not MM, just like how Sony was accused in the Manchester Church when the game was developped by Insomniac.

Holy crap. So I assume the main amount of the delay time will be recalling and reshipping? Smart move for those that picked up an early edition of the game.

What's this about Insomniac?

Sony was asked by the chuch of Manchester to pull back Resistance because their church was in the game.

It's nothing offensive. The church is used as an hospital, like most church were used in periods of war. But Sony just made public excuses for that one.

But as I said, Sony is taking the blame for Insomniac, so they would most likely take the blame for MM as well.

While I do agree that there's no point in critiquing religion, it's important to note that Media Molecule and Sony should have seen this as a potential problem from day one. As long as Islam has been around (since roughly 500 AD), it has always been frowned upon when someone takes quotes from the Koran out of context.

In other words, it's really not about what was said so much as it being blatantly quoted from the Koran itself. That's purely on Media Molecule and Sony. That being said, an apology, patch, and offer to replace discs should have satisfied all parties involved in the matter. Just one man's opinion though...

Note that the song is in Somalian, so most people at Sony and MM probably didn't even know the meaning of the lyrics. And even some knowing the meaning might not know that it was related to the Koran.

I think this is just a stupid move. Considering it's apparently in Somalian, deleted offensive text and that considering it's just one song, it would have gone almost certainly undetected. And it could be quietly patched with a version without those lyrics, and we'd have no problem. But they just had to make a big noise and do a massive recall, didn't they? *Shakes head.* Very unwise decision.

Although on the other hand, it may be an excuse for a better release date, one not so crowded out with so many other titles. Even so, incurring so much anger is not to the best advantage of Sony.

I understand that theory, but LBP was set to dominate whatever competition it was up against at any point. It's poised for greatness at any given point.

Nope, I had two copies bought and paid for, Now I am going to retract those, put them into something else...maybe rock band 2, and maybe I will think again about LBP next summer. By then, plenty will be created, Sony will have the time it needs to touch up anything it needs to, and most of the bugs should be worked out.

This really gets my goat. I still love the game, and nothing against MM, but Sony needs to learn to stop messing with folks.

Sadly, not everyone thinks this way. People will take advantage of the situation... You know how there are plenty of anti-video game groups out there. It doesn't matter what country you're in. If they can find a reason to complain and get attention, they will.

This is why they're getting the copies back.

I know Rock Band 2 is going to utilize a lot more of my time now that there's a delay of an unknown extent. Either way, I'll be rocking out come Saturday at midnight and will just have to continue right on through until LBP finally arrives.

Guys again please can we please leave the judgement of other countries religious, socio-economic background out of this discussion, it is only going to open a can or worms. Sony has made their decision it has nothing to do with how much money a particular country or it's people has nor was it Somalia's fault nor did they raise the initial complaint.

Thank you

According to Joystiq.com - MM already has a patch ready which will be active on day 1 (I'm assuming for those early orders that got out the door before hand).

SO someone made a mistake and the world is all scared because some nutballs in a desert somewhere want to cut peoples heads off because of a cartoon.

Ignorance to this degree is not appreciated whatsoever.
I would love to abide by Quozl's words, but some things can't be allowed to slip without a certain person realizing their dreadful mistake.

Same crap as everytime, most people are just too stupid to recognize the things that happen in the game ONLY HAPPEN IN THE GAME.

I would much rather a group of people be offended than half the world, wouldn't you?
Game or not, it's still there, it's still offensive, and, to be honest, nobody cares if you don't see eye-to-eye with those that have the right to care.

I should never have entered this thread, because if I continue to sit here, my limits will be pushed.
Funny how I was wondering if I should get it today or not... good thing I didn't, because you never know if those earlier versions will ever work properly...

Does that mean consumers will be able to buy it on the 28th or will it be like a week in transit once its begun shipping meaning you wont be able to buy it till november like people are suggesting

Any news on an EU or UK/Ireland release?
http://www.electronictheatre.co.uk/articles/archive/2008/littlebigplanetupdatedukmailshot03171008/

It does seem like a likely release date, but we don't know how trustworthy this is yet. Keep waiting for sony's word on this.

Wow, that's so stupid. Since when is a reference to religion a bad thing? I'm a sony fanboy, but now I'm starting to think "MS wouldn't do this to their customers."
Couldn't they just patch this?

3) We can all enjoy the game together on the same week.

I'm a little annoyed, but only because the game was going to be released on my birthday! These things happen guys. It's hardly the end of the world. Now take a deep breath, wait a little longer and then enjoy all the goodness of LBP!2008-10-17 19:57:00

Okay guys, it's cool to vent and all, but we're gonna need you all to calm down, please. We're all very excited for the game and hearing this isn't good news at all, but it's just a week. Not a couple of months or weeks, it's just ONE week.

Sony got in trouble because Insomniac had the Church of Manchester in the game Resistance. It was nothing offensive. The church was used as an hospital during the war. That's a normal war setting for a church, but Sony still got in trouble for it. The problem with patches is that not everyone has an internet connection and could install the patch. And the bigger problem, is that some people would just read about the issue online, cancel their internet connection, buy the game then call their lawyer to sue Sony because the song offends them. You know very well that some people are stupid enough to do things like that. Some people serisouly sued Poptarts (and won) because they heated the poptart and it was too hot. ****, if you heat something, of course it will be hot! Well, they knew it, but they thought of it as an easy way to get money. Companies have to protect agaisnt such idiots, and so we pay for it.

OH YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!

It was all too perfect. I finally scrounged up the money for a PS3. It comes out before an entire week off college. I'm even miraculously off college on the Friday it's out. We'd had a taste thanks to the beta and we didn't have to wait too long.

This is painful. If it's just one week then I can forgive, but otherwise I think I may have to take my own life.

This is ridiculous. I have been watching all this unfold all day. I really cant believe Sony is recalling all millions of game discs and ruining all this hype all for two small phrases that more than likely would have gone under the radar if it wasn't for that one forum post.

I for one am really upset by this. I have been looking forward for this day for months. I even scheduled a day off work to play all day. But now I just don't know.

I also just thought. Why isn't action being taking against the song itself?? Why against the game?? Why arent thousands of complaints being thrown in the direction of the record company??? Why is the song still for sale on itunes? If they can sell the song on itunes and on CDs in the music stores why cant they sell it in a video game??2008-10-17 20:42:00

Okey, let's think a little:

muslims on the world:

around 1,3 billion (1 300 000 000)

let's say... 30 million of them own a ps3 (30 000 000)

2 million of them believer very strong n' hard in their religion

500 000 are buying LBP

100 000 recognize that there is a song in the background (the gameplay is just too great to listen to any songs)

100 recognize the lyrics

1 is disturbed about this, he is called solid 08 and posted that

Since when did us Americans become so soft? When will we finally stop suing everybody when they make us slightly uncomfortable or when they put one little thing in a movie, book, or videogame that is insensitive to a race or religion?

I think it really comes down to this being an "E" rated game. They're just looking out for the interest of everyone who will play the game. A little rash to recall the game? Probably. But it is what it is.

Didn't see this confirmed yet:

http://www.psu.com/Media-Molecule-talks-LBP-delay,-reveals-new-release-dates--a0005127-p0.php

"Media Molecule has commented on the recall of the highly anticipated title LittleBigPlanet. As many of you are already aware, Sony has begun a global recall due to offensive material found within the soundtrack of the game. We've included an excerpt from the developers below; they're just as disappointed as we are.

"We learnt yesterday that there is a lyric in one of the licensed tracks which some people may find offensive, and which slipped through the usual screening processes. Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no online was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon."

LittleBigPlanet will be released on October 27 in the United States and October 31 in Europe. Coincidentally, this was the original release date for Europe before the game was moved up a week.

Stay tuned for our review of LittleBigPlanet this weekend."

And we all can breathe again...

As far as I am aware, if a game NEEDS system updates in order to function, it has them on the disk. You just won't have noticed because you have the 'net connection.

I just feel bad for everyone that preordered, expecting to play the game in like, 4 days.

Ah well, at least its still released in October. I don't have school again until the 4th, so thats still 4 days of LBP.

Didn't have a chance to come on yesterday and have just read every post in this thread and lets just say i'm VERY MADgrrgrrgrrgrrgrrgrrgrr

Not at sony or MM but THE OTHERS (and i'm not talking about LOST) if i say any more i'm afraid people will get mad and i won't be able to come on here any more and i love this site more than any other I've ever been on

I'm off too calm down and to tell my boss i don't need the 24th off work any more. Probably see you's again before the 31st if thats right but the way i feel now i might not

P.s don't bother telling me to chill out or get over it as it's only another week as the game obviously doesn't mean as much to you as it does to me. This game has taken over my life and the wait was already killing me

Peace out, Dorien

This is such a huge disappointment, honestly. Political correctness is held so highly these days, it really bothers me. Week of the 27th? God, I thought this week was going slowly.

According to our tipster Topsu, the cause for the delay may be due to a a song in the game's soundtrack, which quotes the Quran. Use of religious text in the game may be considered insensitive to some. We're currently investigating this story, and we'll update when we find out more."

Sucks...
they delayed LBP because it quotes the quarn. that is crazy. what's the big deal? am i the only one who thinks political correctness has gone way way too far. i had one week off to play LBP now i'm back to school the day it's out.

this is so ridiculous. they're delaying it because it quotes the q'uran but the q'uran probably has the words the, you and and in it. we could barely speak without using words from it. i have religion class in school and the religion book quotes loads of long passages or sura or whatever they're called from the q'uran. what's the difference. i mean seriously wtf. this is one of the most stupid descisions ever. i cannot believe anyone would be so stupid to delay a game because a song in it quotes a few words from the q'uran. stupid sony.2008-10-17 22:49:00

Ignorance to this degree is not appreciated whatsoever.
I would love to abide by Quozl's words, but some things can't be allowed to slip without a certain person realizing their dreadful mistake.

I'm going to have to agree with you here and I can only offer excuses for my quick words. I just woke up, heard the bad news, got annoyed and made a snap judgement. I obviously do not think that is the reason. A main part of this game is the ability to remove material that will be offensive. I apologize for my harsh words.

I mean, yeah, sure religion is a big part of many people's lifes, and being a Christian my self I can understand that many people are very devoted to what they believe, however, I think this is going way too far.

I cannot see why quoting part of the Qur'an is offensive, though? If someone ever used the phrase "Thou shalt not steal" in a song I don't think any Christians would be bothered. Now don't get me wrong, I AM NOT STARTING A RACE WAR. I respect other people's religion, but for the 0.01% of Muslims (or any LBP players) that would actually notice it, I don't think removing millions of games was worth it.

Plus, I refuse to believe that when the game was being reviewed for websites and such there were no Muslim people there, reviewing it too, meaning that they missed the lyric.

Alex.

TL;DR: Most people wouldn't be listening to every word of the songs. My oppinion, leave it in. Too much hassle? Release a patch, easy.

What.. the hell is up with this world? I sometimes can't believe what's going on. Now a possibly revolutionary game gets delayed, because.. one.. SONG.. has some stupid religious content? To hell with religion, why don't people finally realize it's the stupidest invention of mankind? Seriously this is so g****** stupid, I still can't believe it. I mean if you feel offended by a SONG then don't listen to it. If someone can't enjoy a game, because the music has some probably not even offensively meant words in it, then imo this someone should start thinking about what the hell he is doing. Sometimes it feels like 95% of the population on earth can't think for themselves.
Even though, why do they even have to delay it, they could have patched it out, lock it or something, not like anyone would hack the disk just to get the song into their level.

Well, I've had plenty of time to run about and think of other things. I came to see what everyone else was thinking about this and it seems like mixed reactions as always.

I'm going to have to support Sony in the complete recall even though I want this game as bad as any of you. Built into the game, is a way to report any material that is offensive. If they ignored a song that may be offensive to even ONE person then the whole idea would flush right down the toilet.

We also have to think how great it was for someone to find this PRIOR TO RELEASE. If this came out after the game was sold to millions of people, every bit of news from that point would be negative. There would be loads of lawyers and "activist" groups circling MM and LBP like sharks.

I don't suggest directing any anger at that SOLID guy. He may have been reporting the issue or may have been being a ******. We may never know.

Let's just be happy that this issue has not pushed the game back to November or December and no lawsuits will prevent the game from being sold.

Well said, maybe. But I don't care. I have a long weekend next Thrusday and Friday, and now, no LittleBigPlanet. To repeat myself:

Screw. You. Sony.

Also, some semi-psuedo-religous crap that people bring up at the last minute makes this game unsellable? The World loves GTA, but can't stand some chanting or whatever it is? One more time for posterity:

Even though, why do they even have to delay it, they could have patched it out, lock it or something, not like anyone would hack the disk just to get the song into their level.

While you're entitled to your own views, it's probably best to keep your opinions of religion to yourself as QuozL suggested. We're all disappointed by this delay, but there's nothing that can be done about it at this point. It's one week; we'll all get through it just fine. And - once the game's in hand - we can rest easy knowing that Sony made a tough choice to ensure the best gaming experience for people of all races, creeds, and religions.

One more time for posterity:

.ynoS ,ouY wercS

^Sony, take a look at that in a mirror^

As I stated previously in the thread, I think a lot of this has to do with the game being rated "E" for "Everyone". Vulgarities are to be expected in GTA and, in turn, the game is rated appropriately. It's obvious to me - whether we like it or not - that Sony felt they couldn't knowingly ship a product that might be deemed offensive by a group of people.

At the end of the day, which would you rather happen?

1.) Sony decides to recall the game, remove the content deemed offensive, and release the game one week later.

2.) Sony goes ahead with the original launch. There is a huge mess made over the content that Sony decided wasn't that bad and the greatness that is LittleBigPlanet is completely overshadowed by the whole ordeal.

There is, of course, the possibility that Sony could have released the game and everything would have went along fine. However, they can't take that chance. This game is meant to sell systems and change the way everyone - gamers and laymen - look at video games. To be anything less than certain that this game is completely acceptable to all audiences would be too much of a risk for Sony. They're really relying on this title to kick off a huge holiday season that could potentially put them ahead of Microsoft.

I'm going to have to support Sony in the complete recall even though I want this game as bad as any of you. Built into the game, is a way to report any material that is offensive. If they ignored a song that may be offensive to even ONE person then the whole idea would flush right down the toilet.

fine. i find the word sack offensive change sackboys name. i also find creating offensive so take that out aswell and i just find playing games offensive so goodbye to that bit of LBP. this remindeds me of that south park episode where people were getting offended by christmas stuff.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but religion is used as a cover to hide behind.

They're annoyed by a song in a video game, so a major corporation recalls it and disappoints millions of fans.

In the same way, I'm annoyed by people whining for no discernable reason other than faith, but I get screwed over anyway.

They get what they want, I get screwed over. If you have so much faith, use it in a more productive way.

I've had my "fix". Couple of days ago I rushed through the game in 5 hours. I think it's the most fun game I've ever played.2008-10-17 23:20:00

This is not helping.

What will help...

Anyone got the link to the original PSN post? I'm interested in seeing where he got his copy of LBP. I think rather than complaining about Sony or MM we should complain about stores breaking the street date. Which started this to begin with.

sorry but i disagree. the reason it got delayed is way too much political correctness and religious sensitivity. it is just completly ridiculous. if we lived in a world where everyone wasn't afraid of offending someone there'd have been no delay

Alright, here's my opinion on the whole deal:

On the one hand, this bothers me. I don't like it when political correctness goes too far, and this seems like it might have. Recalling a game for a problem that could have been fixed with a patch is a little much.

On the other, this choice makes sense. If they had released a patch, only those with online would receive it. Many people who buy LittleBigPlanet will not use the online options, meaning that song would still be there. I have no idea how many people it would offend, but if it ends up offending an entire religion, it would completely ruin the goals Sony and Media Molecule have for LittleBigPlanet. Bad publicity would be spread, and LittleBigPlanet could be seen as anti-muslim. This game is supposed to be accessible to all ages, all genders, and all religions, which is why I can see why the decision made sense. Still, I think the goal of making a game completely accessible to everyone is an impossible goal, as something will always offend someone. It's all in how many people would actually be offended by it, and as I've said before, I have no idea how many people would be.

So, in summation, I know nothing about the subject in which this decision is based, so take my opinion with a grain or two of salt.

Yes, if stores didn't break the street date, I'd have my hands on LBP in 3 days...
Now, a few muslims who shouldn't even have the game ruined it for us...

That is a huge exaggeration. That's like calling a Tony Hawk game with a death metal song in it anti-christian.

Again, I understand your frustration. We all do. However, your opinion of religion has little do with the outcome of this situation. You feel robbed just like the rest of us.

But things happen in this world that are completely out of our control. My advice is to take deep breaths; getting worked up over something that you have no power over only leads to more frustration. I'm just trying to do you a favor.

It's clear to me now more than ever that Sony is a proponent of tolerance. While it stinks to have to wait another week, I think it's great that they're leading by example. Rather than feed fire, they were humble in the decision, are going to make the necessary changes, and will have the game out to us in a much quicker fashion than we first thought.

Why is it not an option for these people to just not play the game? I find GTA offensive, so i don't play it.

And by the way, 4 days beforehand? A month ago I probably would have gone, "Aw, too bad. Just another week though." But now, LBP has been all I think about.

In any light, this is dumb.

EDIT: The irony of it is, this will probably make me buy Fallout 3. And I'll probably hum religous tunes while I blow everybody up. Take that Sony!

And I know there's nothing we can do, I'm just ticked. I really don't mean to offend, I am hust the kind of person who can't keep their head on when something bad and unexpected happens. Thanks for tolerating me.

I agree with you but the fact remains... if the stores had not broke the street date, the song would not have offended someone [or whatever the case may be] and therefore the game would not have been delayed.

Personally. I'm going to boycott Target and Walmart.

i agree. this is so stupid. even if they really want to play just mute the volume so they don't hear the song. and docpac they would have got offended when LBP was released first in america only. so it still might have been delayed for europe

I'm just wondering: Are there any Muslims here on LBPC? Don't worry, I won't fire them with my lasers, but I'm just wondering if the so called 'offending material' really is offending, or if it's just because of the principle. Someone who really knows the religion could give us an honest answer hopefully.2008-10-17 23:37:00

Can't they just add a rating such as Teen, or just label that it has Religious references in it, and you can't sue us if you buy it?2008-10-17 23:38:00

And it's perfectly fine that you don't play GTA. Just remember, there's an "M" rating there to warn people that they may be offended by content within. An "E" rating screams "safe for all".

Tolerance is what I'm all about; I try to accept everyone for what they are. But, like I said before, you've got to learn to be cool about things that you have no control over. You're going to wind up with hypertension and be miserable throughout life if you don't learn to be more patient and understanding of other people and their views.

Do you remember the "hot coffee" debacle with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? That was content locked in the game, content that could not be seen unless you modified the game. Still, that content caused the rating of that game to be bumped up to AO and it got Rockstar in a whole heap of legal trouble. Even though that content was completely blocked off from 98% of players, it still dragged Rockstar's image through the mud. My point is this: something slightly offensive can still cause damage even if it doesn't offend most people.

ok i know how to explain this and it is the most common thing i bet

THEY ARE AFRAID OF GETTING SUED

that is most likely the most common reason these things and other things of the sort occur

i have a story that sets in exactly with this, i was at a movie theater and my friend runs up the escalator and i do not want to be left behind so i run up after him except i trip on the way up and the escalator stabs me in the knee and i start to bleed a lot and the highest guy up in the ladder there comes and gives me 2 free addmission passes with a free drink and a free popcorn for each ticket, why do you think he did this, like i said above, he did not want to get sued because that could cost the company a lot of money and they can not afford that.

the same thing here if Sony gets sued than we all get screwed because support for games and the system may drop and that will not be good

so even though i am kinda sad that we have to wait another week, i am glad because if they did not than it could just turn out worse for all of us if you like Sony, so be glad to get the revised version and just run with it lol

sorry if i sound a little hostile

Cheers!

kinda offtopic but when rockstar had to give refunds to people who were offended it was only a few hundred dollars which considering the ammount of GTA SA sold is very small

The game did indeed receive an "E" rating with the song included, but it's clear now the lyrics weren't really checked in the first place. After all, the song is in Somali and Media Molecule as well as Sony must have just glossed over the content all together.

Either way, it's been deemed offensive by some people and Sony has decided to address it via worldwide recall as they have the means to do so. As I said before, doing anything less would mean Sony would run the risk of LBP being overshadowed by something they could have addressed and avoided completely at the cost of one week.
