i think this is the song... Tapha Niang2008-10-17 23:55:00

Do you remember the "hot coffee" debacle with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? That was content locked in the game, content that could not be seen unless you modified the game. Still, that content caused the rating of that game to be bumped up to AO and it got Rockstar in a whole heap of legal trouble. Even though that content was completely blocked off from 98% of players, it still dragged Rockstar's image through the mud. My point is this: something slightly offensive can still cause damage even if it doesn't offend most people.

What the heck is the "hot coffee" thing? Off-topic but I just want to know

And to stay on topic, you guys need to chill seriously. You have waited, some more then others, almost several months for this game, years for the other people. I'm 100% positive that you can wait another week.

The game did indeed receive an "E" rating with the song included, but it's clear now the lyrics weren't really checked in the first place. After all, the song is in Somali and Media Molecule as well as Sony must have just glossed over the content all together.

Either way, it's been deemed offensive by some people and Sony has decided to address it via worldwide recall as they have the means to do so. As I said before, doing anything less would mean Sony would run the risk of LBP being overshadowed by something they could have addressed and avoided completely at the cost of one week.

if people are gonna get mad over a few q'uran refrerences in a song. they'll just go mad at a level which they find offensive online. so it wouldn't make much difference

I think you can count on it. And - as Media Molecule has put the tools necessary in place - people will flag those levels "offensive"...

Yeah, that's it. I'd link the YouTube video here, because somebody just uploaded a video titled 'Little Big Planet - the song that got it delayed', but for obvious reasons I won't.

Go to Wikipedia and search 'banned games' and find GTA on the list.

Which is what someone did, in spirit I guess, with the song. Some found it offensive and Sony acted.

probably. would the level be taken down because if they take down one level referencing religion they'll have to take them every level that references religion down.

Right first I'll come out with it I am a Muslim and also a devoted gamer. Personally to me this is a big disappointment . After seriously looking forward to the game for ages to be knocked back by a couple of line or even one is seriously angering. Like many Muslims I wouldn't haven't even noticed it considering I played through safari levels in the Manchester's Lbp shop and didn't notice anything. But to be honest just because I didn't someone else might have so I can understand MM and Sony situation. But I think that the political correctness can get a little out of hand and has done in the past.

Disappointing a lot and frustrating but what can we do

I'm not sure they would take any of them down. Game experiences may vary during online play and the levels will wind up with flags warning people of the content within.

I actually think the words were very deep. It's not a threat but a comment on life.

I thought it was said somewhere officially, the words were a language other than islamic.

Oh yeah, it's not like:
"We will kill you all, lalalala, kill, kill, death, falmes of evil, grrrrrr, die, grr, Satan, Satan, Satan, BOOM!"

I truly don't understand what people are mad about. Except me, I understand my angers perfectly.

of course it is a shame that LBP is delayed, but it is for the best. If it wasnt delayed, they would have to reacall it eventually for the sole reason that many people (especially religious conservatives) would take supreme offense to have anything from the holy text of islam in this game. It is a shame that so many people would have nothing better to do than to harass a game that meant no harm but...what can you do. It saddens me

also, please don't say you wouldnt buy the game just because it was delayed a few days (or even a few weeks). MM realizes how imperative it is to release the game on schedule and would not postpone the release date any longer. This game will be fantastic no matter when it comes out so just wait and stay calm. All will be well come the 27th.

Don't quote me on this but I think the issue here is that in Islam they refrain from using actual quotes from the Quran within music and therefore hence the complaint. Religious songs called nasheeds are usually in praise of Allah but they are told to refrain from the usage of direct quotes due to it being the word of god. Like i said I am a Muslim but I'm presuming that this is why this has caused such a hassle, but feel free to correct me if this isn't the main point

It could be worse.

Brawl was delayed like four times so I know how hard it is to wait for a game... but it's worth it in the end. Don't give up on a great game just because it's a little late.

After thinking about this for a long time I have come to the realization that for Sony to spend the amount of money that they will spend. With the shipping back and the destruction of the old ones and the rushed new prints of the new BD. They must really want to have this game be a major part of their future.2008-10-18 02:38:00

I think what Sony have came to realize is the drive of this game is huge, the hype is generated not through media even before the media it is peoples imagination that has driven this game to be huge. After all this game is one without limitations well (not many limitations) . And I did read somewhere that Sony are looking to make sackboy the face of LittleBigPlanet.

So if anyone could guarantee it is 28th for US, 31 st on Europe? If that's the case that should be ok as I get paid on the last day of the month

And this whole delay really isnt that bad of a thing. i mean, 7 days, that is a reasonable amount of time to wait. I am not woried one bit (a little anxeious) but nothing too bad

It's great that most in this thread have taken a turn for the positive. In the end, this is going to live up to every ounce of hype that's surrounded it. Most of us have played the beta and know we're destined to get exactly what was promised to us by the good folks at Media Molecule.

We've got a great community here at LBPC; we'll find perfectly suitable ways to occupy ourselves and each other as we wait through one final week without LittleBigPlanet.

Has he had his say here yet? I want to know if he finds the lyrics offending.

I never really gave my opinion on the matter, only on people's responses.
It's not the lyrics that are offensive, it's the fact that the Qur'an was directly quoted in a song, and the Qur'an is never to be used in conjunction with music.

I actually think the words were very deep. It's not a threat but a comment on life.

I thought it was said somewhere officially, the words were a language other than islamic.

They were about life, but it sounds like a terrorist message because it's taken out of context.
The words were in Arabic, but it was with an African dialect, which is why many Arabic speakers may not have recognized it.

Exactly what the problem is.

Anasheed (plural for nasheed) are basically "songs" that are not accompanied with music, so the general public is more lenient when religion is mixed in with it.
Although they are still forced to refrain from using direct quotes from the Qur'an.

Also, nasheeds don't have to be in praise of God, they can be about anything, really.
Although they're mostly used for positive thoughts and the like.

I'm more than happy to answer a few questions, but it's when people start throwing out words without thinking that I shall refrain from posting.
I refuse to get mixed in such touchy matters.

Funny thing is I recently started reading the book, Life of Pi, a story about a boy who is a practicing Hindu, Christian, and Muslim, and I have picked up a thing or two about these religions.

Anyways,

I ask ScytheOfGrim:

Okay, I get it now. Quotes + Music = Bad. So besides just in LittleBigPlanet, would that song be considered offensive on its own?

Were there any other quotes from the Qur'an besides the two mentioned?

I haven't listened to the full song, but I have listened to the extract presented by that Solid-guy, so I'm not entirely sure.

The song on its own is definitely offensive.
Now the question arises:
Why no action against the song itself?

Chances are that song is banned within Islamic countries.

There are many ongoings that you guys don't know about.
CoD4 is banned in the Middle East for numerous reasons.
GTA IV is also banned here for... even more reasons.

There are a number of games that are banned here, but that's not to say that you can't get your hands on them, of course...
It's just that official providers won't sell them.

EDIT:

Hey guys,

I have checked as many of the official news sites as I could find, and I couldn't find an answer to this, so please bear with me if it's blindingly obvious on one that you have seen.

Has it been confirmed if existing copies will be online patched to be compatable with the rest, or, will we lucky few need to get new copies upon release as they won't work online anymore?

Cheers,

If you took the time to read for yourself, then you wouldn't have to wait as long. October 31st for the UK, which was found out a lot earlier today, so it's your own fault for not finding out.

I'm not saying those sites are untrustworthy, but sony is yet to say anything about it themselves. I can trust the people on these forums because every time somebody posts about something like that there is a source. Leave it now, i give up.

Right guys lets leave the petty bickering out of the thread. Sony will release the new dates when they have them until an official release from them it's all speculation. Clank you don't speak for this site so please don't infer in your posts that you do, leave that up to LBP and Cartman.

What is with the vague wording Sony is using with the North American release date?? They say "Shipping the week of October 27th". What does that mean? It will start shipping from the warehouse to the store on the 27th, or sometime during the week of the 27th. Or does it mean it will be available at retail on the 27th or sometime during the week of the 27th? The week of the 27th could be anytime between Oct 27th through Nov 2. Would be nice if they could give us a concrete release date that we can go to the store and pick up the game.

Looks like this might be the kind of situation where we might have to be calling our local stores everyday starting on the 27th to see if they got it in yet.

... This is my worst nightmare...

I am still getting this game, I cannot explain all the feelings I have at the moment.

But it's noones fault really, we just have to count to 10 and think about what a great game Media Molecule have produced.

My only major concern is that this website will fall apart, please people, hold together for a little longer, then we can enjoy this amazing experiance (speeling lol?).

Will.

I agree that we shouldn't be outright against what this guy did. He reported something he found offensive and that's the end of it. It's rather presumptuous for us to think he was being malicious even in the slightest. After all, he found a way to obtain an early copy of LBP, something most of us here would have definitely done if given the chance.

What I'm saying is this guy is obviously a big fan of what Media Molecule's effort and product. Most likely his intention was only meant to inform the developers and publishers; he could have never guessed there would be an all-out recall of the game...

My inhuman rage has now settled to a minor annoyance now that I know it's just one week. I can manage that.

EDIT: Okay, maybe not. Is there a confirmed European date yet?

I'm just glad that the game didn't get released with the track in and then someone noticed it.

If that had happened, the game may have been banned completely in some countries and possible millions of people may have missed out.

If its only delayed by a week, I think we can all probably calm down.

EDIT: I just listened to the song, and its actually very nice (except the offensive part, obviously), I think that a version of the song, but without the quotes should still be in the game, personally.

Of course, this isn't official but it's from this morning so... take it for what it's worth.

Ultimately, reporting October 27 for North America and a worldwide release of November 14. However, it's very likely they're just reporting November 14 as there has been no official word from Sony to say otherwise.

BAD NEWS: From what I've seen, most sites are reporting LBP's release to be: TBC 2008. So, it could be December!

However, most likely seems to be 27th for the USA, but seriously, the rest of the world is 14th November? I hope the UK one comes out on the 31st as said before.

EDIT: On the official PS site (US) it says "October" as the release.

No, but it will release in the states first. If it was a large enough gap I would have tried to hook up everyone. I WISH I had a single copy. It's going to be a collectors item.

*video*
This is a personal qualm, but I'm going to say it anyway:

The delay is not Media Molecule's fault. It is Sony's fault, as Sony made the decision to recall it after Media Molecule had a patch ready to go, a patch which would fix the problem without any delays needing to be made. If you're going to place the blame anywhere, place it with Sony.

I called Gamestop as well today to check to see if they were having a midnight release for Rock Band 2. As a follow-up, I asked about the availability of LBP around October 27; should I just check to see if it's in starting that day? The Gamestop employee was pretty sure they would not only have it on October 27 but would most likely have it for midnight release on October 26! Hoping that's really the case.2008-10-19 03:08:00

that would be awesome, which means they would have fixed everything and reshipped it in under a week.

i do think that that will be the definite date for EU. For one thing, it sounds like (from what i can gather) that the US date is accurate. SO i assume that MM can get the correct date for EU.

Also, MM will do all it takes to get it shipped to EU as soon as possible. Dont you fret.

This is absolutely true. It would be a big mistake to delay the EU release any longer than one week like the North American territories. Let's just hope Sony agrees...

Correct, but other games with offensive content have been released before online patching was available. A simpler and more environmentally friendly method would be to offer those people without online capability the chance to swap their potentially offensive Blu Ray disk for one that had been patched (i.e. Those being printed now) so that there would not be so many wasted Blu-Rays and less environmental impact of shipping evertything back in, then back out again. It probably would have cost less too.

The problem with this is that here in the Middle East, the official (and unofficial) video game retailers will not accept this, and will not abide by this.

Sadly, it's like Sony has no control over how the games are sold once they're into our market, it's all up to the retailer themselves whether they wish to replace the discs or not.

To be completely honest with you, Sony taking back all the copies was easily their best option.

Of course that would be better but lets face it...That wouldn't work. Even if there is the option of taking your copy back to get a modified version, that will not stop dissenters and angry people from attacking the game. Even if it charges the person nothing to exchange it, no matter how easy it is, people will still attack this game.

This is really their only option... Well, their only reasonable option.

I just wanted to say one thing. Grow up its only a short delay, no reason to throw your toys out of the pram for the sake of 3 weeks, it really isn't that important. Yes you can boycott Sony or slag them of but it will not make a jot of difference.

To be honest if I was Sony I would have done the same recall just to be sure.

No seriously there was a few saying they would boycott sony, or not buy the game because of the delay. I just thought this was a bit over the top. I mean a delay! in a videogame release! well i never

Also given the nature of the problem I would have done the same thing to be honest. Look at the death threats that Netherland newspaper got when they published a cartoon with Allah in it. I'm sure thats something neither Sony or MM want to get into.

All things you've said are worth noting. There is a minority who are threatening to boycott Sony over this. Good for them. They'll get over it and just be upset that they didn't get that "First Week" DLC when they finally do get around to getting the game: the second week it's available.

LittleBigPlanet is coming; no use trying to resist its calling.

I just get annoyed when people show their maturity (I was going to say age but it would be insulting), by getting all huffy because a game doesn't come out on time, or doesn't live up to expectations for some real or imagined reason. Some individuals seem to think they have a divine right to influence multi million pound companies because they are part of the 'community'. I'm afraid that is naive and leaves me with an image of them stamping their feet until Mummy gives them what they want.

I played Wow for a couple of years and they were the worst, but now that whole attitude just ranckles me.

I'm terribly sorry I just seemed to have had an unintentional rant. I don't know what came over me.

And relaarx.

It's not that bad, the days will be over before we know it. I actually think the game will be in stock a few days before the 3rd. Most of the time this is the case here in Europe, just hope it's the same this time. Like they had the US version of the game over here, on the 15th of October. Not on shelves, but they sold it to people who asked for it.

I didn't buy one myself, since I didn't knew how it would work with downloadable content.

well there is a definite distribution date on the 27, so if you are close enought to the 27 you will get it on the 27 but if you are farther away you will get it later, i do not know where the distribution points are but i would assume on the east coast or the west coast or both, but most likely the east because if the game goes by ship than eaast coast but i think that they might send planes to the largest populations cities (New York, Los Angeles) but i am just guessing, if anyone knows the distribution points in the US please speak up

Cheers!
