5000xp Challenge - Epic final?
Archive: 272 posts
Ah, the humble 500xp challenge has now multiplied in size tenfold to the all new 5000xp challenge! Trust me, this IS the last one, and I say this as a disclaimer if you return your winning xp to me, it will not go towards another "Challenge", most likely it will go towards a weekly contest (see my thread in Gen. Chat), probably photography, as well as maybe one or two one-off contests. So, here's the rules again: Find the word. One word. That's all I need. Be the first to find it, and you win 2500 xp. You will be given a series of clues to find said word, and, for each clue to provide an insight to, partially crack, or crack in full, you will be given a cut of 2500xp. Solve it all on your own to net the full 5k xp! This is A LOT HARDER than the previous two (or at least I and my...secret conspirer think so), and no hints will really be given (GET THAT, SECRET CONSPIRER, BARELY ANY HINTS) Get it? Simple. Here's your first clue. a-7q9a9q3a7a13a8 GO! | 2009-10-31 12:53:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Reserved for updates. Also, sorry for being 50 minutes late :3 1) BSprague & CyberSora notice a distinct number-letter-number-letter pattern in the first clue 2) comphermc suggests the letters are a qwerty grid-reference (ie a=row a, 4=column 4, so a4=f) 3) comphermc and shadowheaven crack the code to read "@molejack" 4) Ard posits searching @molejack on PSN 5) Fault in the LBP system forces me to circumvent the next step, meaning I post: "Well, epic fail on my/the system's part. The level itself was not important, the only important thing was the clue found in the description. The description of the level was: http://nonoba.com/chris/fridge-magnets/thenextstep" 6) theswweet finds blog post #758, with the next clue on. 7)Shadowheaven cracks the ring cipher to get it to read "gooddaythere@googlemail.com" 8) Shadowheaven does a sneaky back-entry way to change the password on gooddaythere@googlemail.com, finding the hidden message GrahamLif3/Brickfish/Alltornup 9) Shadowheaven finds the photo contest that Grahamlif3 had entered on Brickfish, as well as user Alltornup and his hidden message 10) Shadowheaven discovers Penzu.com 11) comphermc enters the Penzu account with the password uuddlrlrba, the Konami Code 12) comphermc PMs a pic of the current date to moley. I'm discounting this, I really wanted photographic evidence instead of an image of a website. 13) comphermc cracks the dingbat to reveal i35.tinypic.com/2342h42.png 14) BassDeluxe cracks it! The hidden message in the pic this time was Afro! C'mon, who doesn't like Afros? EDIT: My keyboard layout is: (Tab) q w e r t y u i o p [ ] (Caps) a s d f g h j k l .; ' # (Shift) z x c v b nm , . / | 2009-10-31 12:54:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
well the first thing i noticed was 8 was an odd one out. If you change all the letters itno numbers they are all odd numbers and 8 is the only even number. Don't know wether that helps but its something. So i'm taking a guess here but is the first letter H or at least one of the letters. | 2009-10-31 13:08:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |

Here's a hint for you all - the best way to crack a cipher is to look for any sort of repeat, some sort of re-occurring thing that you can use as a base to crack it. It's how all the toughest ciphers, even the Enigma, were broken. | 2009-10-31 14:14:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Are they, hmmm? Evidently the string of letters is not coherent as is. You're doing good, guys, keep looking for those patterns. Any sort of repeat is important. | 2009-10-31 15:29:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Ok i went crazy and figured this out this is for the first post i hope it helps someone. ! 3 " 2 ' 3 ( 3 ) 3 , 17 - 2 . 12 0 9 1 1 2 2 3 2 5 5 7 2 8 1 9 2 : 1 ? 1 A 6 B 2 C 4 D 1 E 6 F 1 G 4 H 4 I 6 L 2 N 3 O 4 P 1 R 6 S 7 T 9 Y 3 2 a 49 b 7 c 16 d 20 e 70 f 13 g 12 h 29 i 47 k 6 l 49 m 10 n 46 o 52 p 15 q 2 r 35 s 37 t 55 u 19 v 6 w 19 x 6 y 16 z 1 I don't think each character is representing a letter in the overall answer because i went through the dictionary looking for words with that same amount of characters and i couldn't find a match. | 2009-10-31 17:18:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Thinking about patterns...the only characters that don't repeat are - and 1. Hmmm... | 2009-10-31 17:29:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
*whistles* Wow, very lateral thinking robotiod. Hate to bring you down, mais c'est incorrect (Frenglish ftw). I would recommend looking at the clue on its own, nothing I have said is essential to cracking it, just provides hints. What repeating patterns do you notice, not just by which letters occur this often etc, but in format etc. | 2009-10-31 17:29:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Hmm.. pattern. I'll post this up for those who don't want to go to the first page. a-7q9a9q3a7a13a8 | 2009-10-31 17:35:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |

Hey guys, maybe it's another post from dawesbr. Remember last time? Here's the way I think it would look on the address bar. 8a3/1a7a3q9a9q7/-a If it's a post...maybe the 8a3 is the forum, 1a7a3q9a9q7 is the tread, and -a is the post... Although it probably wouldn't be reversed like that if that was the case. | 2009-10-31 17:41:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
Separating this in 3 symbols groups we get a- 7q9 a9q 3a7 a1 3a8 (or 8a3 /1a 7a3 q9a 9q7 /-a) I could be completely on the wrong way, but 3a7 and 3a8 look quite suspicious... | 2009-10-31 17:43:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
I'm writing up a quick program to slowly cycle through different ASCII changes to see if I can get something coherent. It will be done in a minute. | 2009-10-31 17:56:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
Did anybody noticed that there's a pattern of numbers and letters? I mean this. #letter# letter#letter #... etc. "3" is used a lot more with "a". Ackward.... | 2009-10-31 17:58:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
then probably my theory is wrong and we must consider group of two symbols, not 3 so it's a- 7 q9 a9 q3 a7 a1 3 a8 (or 8a 3/ 1a 7a 3q 9a 9q 7/ -a) I'm noticing that , q and a are the first visible symbols starting from the left of the keyboard (I have a qwerty btw) | 2009-10-31 18:03:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
I also noticed that 3 and 1 are only one number away from each other, 2. So are 9 and 7, 8. | 2009-10-31 18:06:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
So the program didn't come up with anything coherent, so it isn't a simple ASCII value change. | 2009-10-31 18:07:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

If we take the q, a, or / to be a reference row on a qwerty keyboard, then the number could be take to mean the element that we take from that row. So, /3 is "c" since it's the 3rd letter in the "/" row. Therefore, the code spells out -mojack I don't know what the dash is suppose to represent... Does this mean anything to anyone? Google tells me mojack is a lawnmower... or a band... I dunno - does is stand for Michael Jackson? ...I'm making stuff up now. The problem is that I'm not sure my querty keyboard is the same as yours - I'm on a laptop. For me "" is in the same row as "q", but on some it's in the same row as the numbers... I even found his photobucket page cute doggy - too bad it's the wrong track : It's not a deviantart premium profile (when they're premium they get a @ instead of a * at the nickname's beginning) either... | 2009-10-31 21:02:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
What're you on about, compher?! I have no idea what you guys are talking about, this is all unexpected O.O I thought the @molejack thing was the easiest of all the clues O.O | 2009-10-31 21:03:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
The difficulty curve is the most unpredictable on this kind of games xD - right now I'm thinking about an email address or an account somewhere that uses the same method of deviantart... | 2009-10-31 21:06:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
:O Search @molejack that on LBP and you get levels by molejack. Moley told me yesterday his old PSN was molejack. SOMEONE SEARCH IT!! | 2009-10-31 21:07:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
Haha, who is BCS321? I see you posted on twitter... BCS321 is me. I was seeing if the account existed, which it doesn't. It just dawned on me that you can search @molejack on PS3, which I'm doing now. | 2009-10-31 21:08:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |

Well I'm assuming we'll find a level under molejack with another clue. So I'm also assuming that Moley is the secret conspirator? | 2009-10-31 21:13:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
If it's a new level, it won't show up for some time. That's just how the servers have been acting. Anybody his friend? | 2009-10-31 21:13:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Looks like we are on the right track but the search module is failing on us? xD | 2009-10-31 21:13:00 Author: Shadowheaven Posts: 378 |
Trust moleynator to break the game. The one main thing he is meant to do... It's not a new level, or at least it SHOULDN'T be, moley was meant to publish it days ago, and told me he had. GAH! | 2009-10-31 21:14:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Looks like we are on the right track but the search module is failing on us? xD Probably, I guess we just have to wait. EDIT: Dawes, what is the name of the level, maybe we can find it that way? | 2009-10-31 21:14:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
It takes several weeks for it to kick in... we now have to wait for moley to use that account to comment on someone's level so we can find it. A few days is not enough, generally. | 2009-10-31 21:15:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Where is moley when you really really really need him D: BSprague, I don't know, he didn't tell me what he named it D: Oh god, I could KILL moley right now :@ | 2009-10-31 21:16:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Maybe he hearted the account molejack with his main one... too bad he published only one locked level, so we can't get to his hearted list It's funny, because it flashes the name of the level for a second, then it goes away. I tried pressing X as it came up, but it didn't do anything. | 2009-10-31 21:18:00 Author: BSprague Posts: 2325 |
Ok, then. Is anyone friends with Moley's new account? | 2009-10-31 21:18:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

How's this for coincidence... I tried to look for post number 758, and then I tried to look for post number (7*5*8 = 240) and they were both by the same person. I don't think it's related, though. | 2009-10-31 21:46:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
comphermc, back in the days of the first 1000 posts, there would only have been around 10 users on the forum, so it's statistically probable that those two posts were by the same person. I still feel really sneaky. | 2009-10-31 21:47:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Well, exhausted doesn't even come close to describing how I feel right now, so I'm going to hit the hay in a sec. I've told moley to watch over the thread today and tomorrow (I'm in Oxford tomorrow), so he's in charge for the moment. All clues up till really far on in are autonomous (ie, I don't need to be here for you to crack them), so he should be able to handle it. | 2009-10-31 21:54:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Cracked it. The next hint is: So you got to the penzu page. Good job. Now, another simple task, this one is tricky, but not impassable. Don't be annoyed, but I'm going to need a....photo! Of today's newspaper, or something that identifies it as today, in photograph form, and preferably with your username on a piece of paper next to it. Just PM this to me (dawes) or moleynator and we'll give you the next clue (which you are free to keep to yourself or to tell to others). Apologies in advance for any delay in sending the next clue, there may be times when neither of us are on. The password was "uuddlrlrba" - hence, Konami Code Lol, i also got into the gmail account - way to change the password, SH! | 2009-11-01 00:00:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
