5000xp Challenge - Epic final?

Archive: 272 posts

Ah, the humble 500xp challenge has now multiplied in size tenfold to the all new 5000xp challenge! Trust me, this IS the last one, and I say this as a disclaimer if you return your winning xp to me, it will not go towards another "Challenge", most likely it will go towards a weekly contest (see my thread in Gen. Chat), probably photography, as well as maybe one or two one-off contests.

So, here's the rules again:

Find the word. One word. That's all I need. Be the first to find it, and you win 2500 xp. You will be given a series of clues to find said word, and, for each clue to provide an insight to, partially crack, or crack in full, you will be given a cut of 2500xp. Solve it all on your own to net the full 5k xp! This is A LOT HARDER than the previous two (or at least I and my...secret conspirer think so), and no hints will really be given (GET THAT, SECRET CONSPIRER, BARELY ANY HINTS)

Get it?

Simple. Here's your first clue.

GO!

Reserved for updates. Also, sorry for being 50 minutes late :3

1) BSprague & CyberSora notice a distinct number-letter-number-letter pattern in the first clue
2) comphermc suggests the letters are a qwerty grid-reference (ie a=row a, 4=column 4, so a4=f)
3) comphermc and shadowheaven crack the code to read "@molejack"
4) Ard posits searching @molejack on PSN
5) Fault in the LBP system forces me to circumvent the next step, meaning I post:

"Well, epic fail on my/the system's part. The level itself was not important, the only important thing was the clue found in the description. The description of the level was:

http://nonoba.com/chris/fridge-magnets/thenextstep"

6) theswweet finds blog post #758, with the next clue on.
7)Shadowheaven cracks the ring cipher to get it to read "gooddaythere@googlemail.com"
8) Shadowheaven does a sneaky back-entry way to change the password on gooddaythere@googlemail.com, finding the hidden message GrahamLif3/Brickfish/Alltornup
9) Shadowheaven finds the photo contest that Grahamlif3 had entered on Brickfish, as well as user Alltornup and his hidden message
10) Shadowheaven discovers Penzu.com
11) comphermc enters the Penzu account with the password uuddlrlrba, the Konami Code
12) comphermc PMs a pic of the current date to moley. I'm discounting this, I really wanted photographic evidence instead of an image of a website.
13) comphermc cracks the dingbat to reveal i35.tinypic.com/2342h42.png
14) BassDeluxe cracks it! The hidden message in the pic this time was Afro! C'mon, who doesn't like Afros?
EDIT: My keyboard layout is:

(Tab) q w e r t y u i o p [ ]
(Caps) a s d f g h j k l .; ' #
(Shift) z x c v b nm , . /

well the first thing i noticed was 8 was an odd one out.

If you change all the letters itno numbers they are all odd numbers and 8 is the only even number.

Don't know wether that helps but its something.

So i'm taking a guess here but is the first letter H or at least one of the letters.

All turned to numbers (letters into numers are bold):

Here's a hint for you all - the best way to crack a cipher is to look for any sort of repeat, some sort of re-occurring thing that you can use as a base to crack it. It's how all the toughest ciphers, even the Enigma, were broken.2009-10-31 14:14:00

I would recommend looking at the clue on its own, nothing I have said is essential to cracking it, just provides hints. What repeating patterns do you notice, not just by which letters occur this often etc, but in format etc.2009-10-31 17:29:00

If it's a post...maybe the 8a3 is the forum, 1a7a3q9a9q7 is the tread, and -a is the post...

Although it probably wouldn't be reversed like that if that was the case.

Separating this in 3 symbols groups we get
a- 7q9 a9q 3a7 a1 3a8 (or 8a3 /1a 7a3 q9a 9q7 /-a)

I could be completely on the wrong way, but 3a7 and 3a8 look quite suspicious...

Did anybody noticed that there's a pattern of numbers and letters? I mean this.

"3" is used a lot more with "a". Ackward....

then probably my theory is wrong and we must consider group of two symbols, not 3

so it's a- 7 q9 a9 q3 a7 a1 3 a8 (or 8a 3/ 1a 7a 3q 9a 9q 7/ -a)

I'm noticing that , q and a are the first visible symbols starting from the left of the keyboard (I have a qwerty btw)

If we take the q, a, or / to be a reference row on a qwerty keyboard, then the number could be take to mean the element that we take from that row. So, /3 is "c" since it's the 3rd letter in the "/" row.

Therefore, the code spells out

-mojack

I don't know what the dash is suppose to represent... Does this mean anything to anyone?

Google tells me mojack is a lawnmower... or a band... I dunno - does is stand for Michael Jackson? ...I'm making stuff up now.

Wait, that's wrong. / is not the same as ...

The problem is that I'm not sure my querty keyboard is the same as yours - I'm on a laptop. For me "" is in the same row as "q", but on some it's in the same row as the numbers...

So, modified with the numbers version, I get: "-7oleja3k"

Modified to recognize / is not = to , I get: "-uolejaek"

I'm super confused. Where did Gwijjibo come from? What about splasmagorf? @.@

Oh, and that was me sending the other email.

That was the answer to his previous challenge... I am in Brickfish looking for clues, will report.

I've been trying the konami code for the email and pass, but it doesn't work. My worry is that we don't know the exact format it goes in. Are there spaces? no? dashes maybe? Is it enter or start? Capital A and B?2009-10-31 23:44:00

I've tried several variations, including using start (as in the original) instead of enter D:

Cracked it. The next hint is:

So you got to the penzu page. Good job. Now, another simple task, this one is tricky, but not impassable. Don't be annoyed, but I'm going to need a....photo! Of today's newspaper, or something that identifies it as today, in photograph form, and preferably with your username on a piece of paper next to it. Just PM this to me (dawes) or moleynator and we'll give you the next clue (which you are free to keep to yourself or to tell to others). Apologies in advance for any delay in sending the next clue, there may be times when neither of us are on.

The password was "uuddlrlrba" - hence, Konami Code

Lol, i also got into the gmail account - way to change the password, SH!

Thanks.
