5000xp Challenge - Epic final?

Archive: 272 posts

Oh that's great. Not another contest that you had to be able to use 'paintshop' or something similar to work it out and win. That's great again for those of us who can't do that.

Thanks.

Hmm... good point, but free image editing software is out there, such as GIMP and most people here do have them.

I am sure Dawes will be sorry.

You seem like you're always angry man. In some cases it's justified, but not here. I did it with paint's fill option.

It wasn't intended to be a burn or an attack or anything. I don't mean to cause any problems.2009-11-01 04:21:00

@theswweet and CyberSora:

Not necessary, please try to prevent from saying something that could upset someone.

@BassDeluxe:

Nothing really, umm... Congrats? Haha I dunno why I quoted you to be honest.

No, only angry at things that aren't fair or don't work.

As for 'paint's fill option' I have no clue what that is.

What's the criteria for the next contest going to be I wonder. Must be a brain surgeon? or an Astronaut maybe? or maybe you'll need an in-depth knowledge of C++?

Whichever it is that counts me out again.

Not many one here knew about Penzu or the Konami code, but we adapted and searched it on google/wikipedia; there could be a contest that requires contestants to know something about taxydermy, pascal language or nuclear medicine, and everyone could use google/wiki/whatever else to solve it, like we just did here - if I don't have a hex/image/text editor, I search for a free one - if you don't know how to use them, you can simply mess up with the commands and start learning (you don't need tutorials for everything, on the contrary the best way to learn is by experimenting) - in the last image, on photoshop cs3, I found over 5 methods to find out the word... You're complaining about your lack of adaptation capabilities and/or your lazyness...2009-11-01 10:47:00

No I just believe in 'Fair play' and giving anyone and everyone an equal chance. It's just the way I was brought up and will always be. A trait that kids nowadays don't have unfortunately.

Anyway in future just state in the first post if photoshop skills are required and then I won't waste my time sitting for hours with a pen and paper and getting brain-ache trying to work it out.

That will save me a lot of time and trouble all round. No problem then.

I didn't really like this comment you made!! Especially as it was made to my husband!!

What you young 'uns have to appreciate is the more mature members of this forum (I include myself in that category) were brought up in a completely different age to you. You are used to computers and live, breathe and sleep them, which in this day and age is a good thing, but the older members here most certainly were not.
Some of us don't understand what all these technical terms mean, yes we try and learn, but things are hard to pick up, when you don't have much knowledge in that particular area.

So you saying 'lack of adaption capabilites and/or lazyness' I find quite rude.

There, I've had my say now!

Lol, sorry about that, I didn't think you were older than me - I'm used to consider the people I meet on the net as younger than me, and looks like I was very wrong in this case - I thought mistervista was a lazy complaining kid, that's all2009-11-01 12:35:00

No, he's being harsh on us. Sorry you have to have basic computer skills to do this contest, but that's the way it is. Allow me to explain how you get the picture in paint.

First, copy the image in paint. Now click the eyedropper tool. I trust you know what an eyedropper looks like. Select any square. Now click the pencil. Scribble everywhere. Then click the paint bucket. Select a black color. Click anywhere blue. Wow, I must have had to be a professional graphics designer to figure that out!

I mean, really. Should it also state in the first post that you must have a functioning brain to enter?

then I won't waste my time sitting for hours with a pen and paper and getting brain-ache trying to work it out.

That clue was solved in something like three minutes.

Also - if you're entering a scavenger hunt online, you can be sure that you will need some knowledge of computer's and programs on them.

Calm down, minions, you're the ones that got riled up at ME for scolding Vidi-vici... in your words, "Drop it!".

@Mr.Vista; You shouldn't really be getting riled up over this. There are much worse things in life and let me tell you something right now; life is not fair, NEVER, and take that saying from the prime example... Now taking on what Mrs. V. said, you are maybe a bit more alienated from computer tech than the rest of us but you can't blame Dawes nor anybody, not even yourself, for that. Knowing you, you're a calm and kind person and I take it something's happened to you IRL, and so you've been havin' a bad day. Take a walk outside, forgive, forget, don't spend your time in anger. You have to let things go. This is coming form a guy who lost a school election to someone who didn't campaign and had to witness them make a speech in front of the entire middle school.

Alright, everyone. Are we cooling off now?

Part of the reason there was such emphasis on a wide variety of different skills is partially to make it harder, and partially to make it a group effort. I assure you Dawes didn't choose his challenges to exclude certain members - he chose them to try and challenge us all. I hadn't heard of half of the things he used in this little game - but I had to figure them out to continue. The theme of the game is cracking a puzzle, so you'd probably be at a disadvantage if you haven't experienced these type of puzzles before - playing the last two definitely helps.

In that regard, I wouldn't complain about there being a photography contest if I didn't have the same quality of camera as the next person. I'd say "shucks!" and move on with my life. Yeah, it's unfortunate that I wouldn't have a chance, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Mistervista, I see where you are coming from, and you are justified in your disappointment, but I don't think you expressed that the best possible way. Complaining and condemning the contest is not respectful to all the work Dawes put into organizing this thing. Fair?

To everyone who was bitter towards Mistervista, you didn't handle it well either. You have to remember these are real people, not just words to be argued at. Consider what you write a little more thoroughly in the future.

I wasn't bitter at him, but I'd gone through a situation this past week, not to mention I've been fighting with my parents, and seeing him enraged like this, you know, I'd thought I'd told him what people told me; It made me feel better, at least. Either way, I know he's not usually like this. Thanks for defusing Comph.2009-11-01 19:28:00

Woah, what a thread to come back to! Sorry I took a day longer than promised, the ISP was completely down last night D: Well done to everyone who posted, the attributed XP has been posted in the Second Post, it'll be given out by me in an hour or so after dinner.

I would just like to say this to Mr and Mrs Vista - I have parents and teachers, I know how technology can be a bit of a challenge to older generations. However, I do not go to a motorbike racing open and complain that it is not equal opportunities because I neither own a bike nor was I brought up with one. That same situation applies here. However, I did try and vary the competition to include word puzzles etc (like my Keyboard Ciphers) which didn't require computer knowledge, they just required a keyboard, which I would hope you have. No hard feelings though. I do hope you'll enter what will probably end up as a photography competition, but this is a general message to everyone: the photography competition won't be about resolutions. I'd say anywhere above 640*480 resolution will be fine.
