Just add water?

Archive: 556 posts

im sorry if you look it says 10th may

i did....the fact that he posted the link....knowing it says may 10th

and adding CC:

probably means that there is a new beta sign up list that they have....which is why i typed what i typed

EDIT:

also i know this is offtopic but bear with me......they are really giving us a lot....and that last history pack has really made my save file more filled....i had to delete my objects so i could make room for the history pack since apparently it took some space...and now this water is coming with more stuff

so basically what im getting at is....any chance that they will make something to let us use our HDD to store more memory or something similar?

It's just confusion.

There is no new beta sign up list, that sign up list was for the online create beta, which has started and has been for the past month +.

In their latest podcast, they've confirmed that more profile space is coming. 250 times more space apparently

Yes, from what I understand, current profile stuff is saved to the PS3's "save data utility", which doesn't offer a whole lot of max space. What I think they're doing is moving the profile save data to the "game data utility", which is where games get installed, and I'm pretty sure I've seen some games take up at least 6GB there. Very much looking forward to that time, although I can now imagine my profile turning into a complete mess with my never maintaining it.

Anyway, back on topic... This was totally unexpected, and looks awesome! I feel kind of bad that a lot of the underwater levels that have already been made are going to seem a bit outdated once this is released. But we'll all remember them fondly.

Honestly, i really really think that all the creator-packs, the major changes like the last creator kit with the new switches, the MGS pack with the paintenator, and this one should all be free. Costumes, extra stickers and decorations - I'm okay with all of that being paid content. But major additions like these really REALLY should be free, especially considering the content has to be installed in an update in order to play others' levels that implement them anyway...

Nevertheless, I'm quite excited. I'm sure, as others have said, that you won't be able to have water dispensers and the like, you probably won't be able to fill a bathtub like they suggest at one point in the video - instead it will likely be a "water level" that floods the entire level in a straight line from left to right.

but it still looks amazing. Now if only they'll make an official "background editor" function!

Bit late for that isn't it?

I thought someone had announced a new beta for the water then!
Chances are i wouldn't be allowed in a new beta anyway, i'm always breaking my NDA xD

Dude i was rplying to some one els about that the online create wil be in a pack with the water

correct

wood might float but sink when sackboy steps on it, because all the ones that float are light material...

I can't believe my little sack eyes.

I'm almost speechless, I mean WATER is no easy thing to add, and I'm positive the WATER addition might be a part of a new Creator Kit, since the last one was called Creator Kit 1. I'm soooo curious as to what else will be in the kit.

Now all that is missing is WIND (which can be constant or triggered, and the strength can be set and depending on the strength will effect the sack person accordingly, etc), and ICE of course should be brought back.

DLC doesn't add anything to your save file. Simply having the history pack won't overload your file.

Well... really, you are getting them for free. Think of all the thousands of levels that use the paintinator, which everyone can play even if they don't have the pack. What you're paying for is being able to add it to your levels. It'll probably be the same with water.

Also, major additions are the one thing I don't hesistate to buy. Whatever it is, I'm getting it, as everyone else here probably would. And a LOT of work probably went into getting the water right, you can't really expect them to do all that for free.

sponge floats

It's a miracle! Who'd have though sponge would float? Next you'll be telling us that metal sinks....

Also, you still haven't given any evidence that water will be released with online create. I don't see how your previous post proves it...

I'm positive that all of the materials will re-act realistically when in water, simply because it would throw things off if they didn't since LBP uses a physics engine.2009-08-18 22:33:00

So, does anyone here think that the diving suit is an enhancement?
In the video, sackbooy floats without it. But with it, he can swim (as if with a jetpack).
Anyone agree or am I wrong?

Indeed. Things will probably float or sink depending on their weight and shape. So you should theoretically be able to make a floating boat from metal if you design it properly.

Of course... now someone can go and be totally evil by remaking the time-bomb-defusing stage with the electric algae from TMNT for the NES.

YouTube - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Area 2 Bomb Locations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIUrswGSXsY)

......that's incredibly tempting.

And the algae could also shoot at you or something!

Anyway this is like, just great. Leave it to MM to come up with the best download stuff EVER. This looks to be as totally awesome as the MGS pack was.

.....also, leave it to MM to announce something like this and then let us all go slowly insane by wondering WHEN it's coming.

All part of their nefarious plan, Im sure.

i sa in the vid that a littlesack with only some pants on swim but i think he got 30 seconds (i think) time to stay underwater til he drowns

ohyea that diving suit wil that be a costume are thust somthing like the jetpack?

If Mm do manage to make things like water emitters then it's more than likely that we'll get wind at the same time since i imagine they'd pretty much work in the same way. The only difference being that wind wouldn't react to gravity.2009-08-18 22:47:00

There's so much we gotta figure ouy about it! Paintinator or jetpacks under water? Jow can you control what floats and doesn't? Does it slow objects down? THIS WILL BE AWESOME. IT WILL CHANGE LBP MORE THAN THE PAINTINATOR 2009-08-18 22:48:00

From what I can make out (with some educated guesses thrown in):

- To me it seems that the water level (surface of water) would be consistent for an entire level (stage / area of gameplay), with depth can be adjusted through something like the global lighting object (activated by a switch at one point in the video).
- Holding your breath monitored by a counter like the one when you go off-screen until death by drowning occurs when it runs out (or possibly forces sack to resurface?).
- Boat pieces? Engine? (something small and yellow in one frame on a boat, seems to be throwing up water like a real engine). Some other niece parts in there that would look nice on cars too (blue cone fenders with brake lights).
- Aqualung as a character enhancement (seen on several sacks as a yellow mask and tanks), picked up like jetpack and disables drowning, thus allowing unlimited underwater gadding about.
- Could this mean the return of the Brighton Pier background!? That I would love to see!!

Of all the incredible things in the video I really like the little sack gasp for air animation!
Adding "the bends" would make for some interesting gameplay challenges (though that would probably be going into too much detail) [though it could make another cause of sack-death in the form of death by resurfacing too quickly!).

Also, I've tweeted Mm about the topless sackgirl, this is meant to be a child friendly game... will somebody please think of the children!!!

She's on the Mm homepage background and the placeholder image for the video. What actually caught my attentiion was the new hairpiece!

I just realised you'll see a lot more sackpeople sporting life bouy and mermaid costumes when this comes out!
What would be useful (though probably wont come out due to the lack of using two enhancements at once) would be diving boots. Could be useful for puzzles.

Here are some interesting thoughts . . .

-The ability to make the water appear normal or heated, etc, like bubbling water or steamy water, etc.

-Making an obstacle where players can fall through the ice (made with glass slapped with white sticker and the cracking ice sound effect or other) into the water.

-A level where the water setting is set to slowly rise so that you can make a level where you have to make your way up avoiding the water.

Anyways, water is nice, but the water temp idea reminds me of LAVA, and wind is still one I would really LOOOVE to see. I almost feel like I'm asking too much of Media Molecules. ^_^

And whoever brings up the topless sack girl thing, and contacted MM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!

Since when was a topless sack person anything new? There are tons of childrens shows with female characters topless with no breasts, like female animals or female characters similar to a sack person.

Anyone that brings that up is just silly. It's laughable. ^o^

This is LBP, not a nude photo shoot.

Yeah, a beach theme would be nice.

But I still wonder if the water will be a part of a new Creator Kit 2 or a DLC? I was positive a Creator Kit, but everyone's speculation and things from the video make me unsure. Ah well, I guess we will just have to wait and see, although I can hardly wait. ^_^

OMG!! I wonder if a water slide or other water thing would be possible!? I guess it just depends on how they will let us manipulate the water. If it can only be a body of water, then things like that wouldn't be possible. But if the water can be made to move in certain ways and the water itself is effected by physics, then ooohh the possibilities.

@Media_Molecule Is water the only new feature or is it the tip of the iceberg for the new DLC Pack?
@ovoro lol, tip of the iceberg I guess!

So, indeed there's going to be more to this pack, and from the sound of 'tip of the iceberg', I'd say the other stuff will also be very awesome!

I agree with others who said it would be awesome to have wind and lava. Maybe the sticker cutout tool - that would be great!

Hey, we're just really thirsty for some more information.

This new feature will definitely increase the flow of ideas for levels.

As a matter of fact, a flood of new ideas has been pouring into my mind ever since I learned of this.

Also, I suppose someone will have to invent a Jet Ski Cheetah(tm) to replace the now defunct Rocket Cheetah.

I'm with you on this thought. This kind of DLC is certainly worth our money, and is a lot more work than new costumes (not that they aren't hard work) or stickers (blech!).

While I'm certainly happy enough to shell out cash for this feature, I feel for those who don't have the money, credit card, or Sony cards which don't even exist in Canada and elsewhere.

I'll be slightly disappointed if what we've seen is the only possibility for water. Zoning water doesn't even seem to be too much of a hassle. I mean HL1's water was essentially zoned out polygons with modified gravity.

It would be really cool if you could make sections of water then "waterfy" them like the gas tool but I digress. This is still awesome

Im hoping for a Elements Pack.

Its highly unlikely since we've already got Fire and umh.. Earth?

Wind and Water would be awesome though. Admit ( Emmit ) it!

Thank you so much, Media Molecule.

I'm guessing the scuba mask is some kind of power-up that allows us to breathe underwater. This is gonna be sweet.

But picture it like this:
A key object is on fire and you have to get it to water before you can use it.

Hybrid leader, yep those are the boat decorations and engine I previously mentioned, thanks for pointing those out!
I think the striped decoration (used as a drinks straw earlier in the vid) seems to be a candy cane from the christmas pack.
KernelM, the light I think hybrid refers to is the led beside it (currently off), also a similar shaped yellow depth (well surface actually) marker seems to be floating above and lights up when the switch is pulled and the depth changed.

A submarine eh, that's something I'll definitely have to make. I wonder if the new mechanics will allow for the creation of an airlock?

Fire would probably be put out my water, then electricity could maybe turn the entire body of water into a hazard?

Gas would probably be the same underwater

Maybe we'll have some new hazard that only works underwater

carefully overlay gas with water to create deathwater

Liking the electricity idea - lower the level of the water so the electric item is no longer submerged and you can swim.

So let's hope they fix that quickly as well, ey!!

Then add two doors and instant airlock!

Just to point out regarding the sackgirl swimsuit talk a few pages back, I got on to Mm, it is laughable because it was meant to be! Purely a joke! Just innocent fun, like LBP!

Regarding the lag, unfortunately that will probably always go on, it happens in all online games. Though as far as I can see water shouldn't cause too much lag, splashes look to be just sticker effects like an ingame explosion, in which case it shouldnt lag much unless you have, say, 100 seperate 1 small grid square sized piece of metal falling into the water at once.

Thinking about sinking things now, a sort of endless sinking ship style survival challenge could be fun!

I always thought about a de-hazard switches, but it's something that has got a sense only for electricity, since you can't turn back a carbonized material to a material...let's not even consider the gas.

The idea of fire things that de-hazard, but still appear burnt (a de-hazard solution?) can be cool, and the electricity that propagates in water is great, but I think we're speculating too much.

I just think of puzzles with swimmable water that enable to reach certain areas otherwise inaccessible, then pull lever, explore other areas and go on...

I saw that in a flash game once

You controlled a submarine and had to collect minerals underwater to earn money, but you could only go to a certain depth before it got dark. If you wanted to go deeper you had to save up and buy upgrades like stronger armour and a torch

You could make better space level too. And you won't even need the jetpack.

OOooooh, space ship adventure. Every now and then you you have to leave the safety of the space ship to solve a puzzle, but you won't have your diving gear to do that, so you have to be quick or get back inside the ship to get air.

So many ideas. o/

Anyway, assuming that someone was right several pages back and you can use bubbles to breathe under water (without the scuba gear), I forsee a lot of 'Bubble Survival' levels being made. Bascially, bubbles are emitted from the sea floor and float upwards, you have to swim into them before you run out of air and drown.

While you're at it, there's this little trick in the GBA version of Rayman 3 where you'd punch a Plum, then you could ride it across a deadly stream of lava, using your punches to increase momentum.
That idea became hell when you reached later levels with it in.

I bet the layer glitch was caused by the water feature. Notice how they both extend way into the background and into the foreground as well.

Remember that big 80 MB patch that MM said contained the next couple of months DLC? The water kit is probably in it and it opened up the possibility for the layer glitch.

How many of us will deliberately drown sackboy the first time around purely to watch this!?

Well one thing is for sure, MediaMolecule have killed millions of sackpeople in the past, and it was cute every single time. I'm sure watching sackboy/sackgirl drown will be the cutest water-induced death you've ever witnessed.

I think that the animation will be the sack holding his throat (not strangling =P) and then blow up as usual.

Also I hope that the water can have different colours (yellow ) and I wonder, that if you put a box in the water it will float around or the pink stuff will goto the top.

OMG!? This is sooooo creepy!

I was just going to post a topic asking people if it was possible to make water into a Patch instead of putting it into LBP2!

How creepy is that!? Well it looks like ESP DOES EXSIST!

Is the Beach Background also going to be present in this add-on as well!?

It would also be great if they could add dust or sand into LBP as well.

I wonder if you can change the densety of the water as well? Like make it so dense that it's like your walking on jelly or make it ooze so it's like lava or somthing. I AM SO GETTING THIS

what i mean is the bombs don't explode as they touch the water... they dont carry on falling, so they float and get hit by junk in the space of 3 seconds

My guess would be if you need to make a pond, make it below the ground level of your play area and then have the play area dip down into the pond.

Cool idea but I don't think it's possible, at least for this water as it fills up all the level, and it programmed to react in certain way. It would be too difficult to programm a density change...
If "jelly" can be made, it must be a separate material I think

The important question that remains is... how are creatures going to behave when in water? Are they going to float about helplessly? Will they ignore water entirely? Are we going to get a new option or creature leg to make them interact with water in a meaningful way?2009-08-20 14:58:00

There are already a few Jaws/shark levels. I find them interesting mostly because we don't currently have water. I don't think any shark level with *actual* water will be as interesting as those because there'll be much less effort involved in making the water environment.

It'll be a tough job to make a water environment that *doesn't* just look like the standard water tool we'll be given. I think some new visual tricks will evolve out of the need to be different from the rest of the water levels.

New question:

layer shifting underwater. How?

We got three layers of water, gonna be a bit sucky if we are limited to swimming in only one of them (ignoring grabables)

Like someone else suggested, it will probably be just one layer similar to when you're on a jetpack. But ya never know... I don't see how they could make more than one layer accessible while swimming though.2009-08-20 16:53:00

A)Make the right stick switch layers.
B)Disable emotions in the water, and make that switch layers.

Yeah that's what I thought. it does kinda suck though. Does add the opportunities for grabbables to open up the back layers that can't really be done with the jetpack (due to voluntary cancelling) though.

Edit - both pretty good solutions there Adam

I'm 90% sure that swimming will work exactly like a jetpack

They've made it clear in the past that changing existing controls would be a bad move (notably in their newest podcast), it just ends up confusing a lot of players and they like to keep everything as simple as they can.

I don't think theres any problem with being stuck on the front layer, i've never had any complaints about it when using a jetpack.
You can still make him grab stuff on other layers if you really need to move between them

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking for this solution. Then all you'd need to do is hide the main water line with a front thin layer, provided the water doesn't take up any space in that layer.

Does anyone else think we'll still be seeing a lot of fake water after this update?

Small amounts of water won't work a lot of the time in levels using this because you can always see it on the horizon or in the foreground, in a lot of cases it'd just be easier to revert back to using glass and jetpacks or something similar

Also does anyone thing we might be getting water themed decorations like waterfalls?

This is something we can only hope and dream of getting. It doesn't look like we'll be getting the functionality of falling water. As others have said, it looks like we're simply given the option to fill our level to a certain height. But a decoration of some kind that would emit water could be a good solution. Not sure exactly how they would do it but that would be awesome. I mean having water is amazing enough, but imagine waterfalls.

I've been thinking about the things we'll see once this update goes live and the first thing I thought of was how many 'faked' waterfalls we'll see emptying into 'real' water. It might work but for the most part, based on the realistic behavior and look of the water, it will look pretty strange.

We always want more don't we. Oh well I guess it's human nature
Here's hoping.

It could be but I don't think it's possible, cause the water extends out of the main gameplay layers (big and thin),
so we can't hide it with the 1st front thin layer...
or we must use the extra layers glitch to make so...
That's why water must be outside the screen (lower) on parts when it's not supposed to appear...

With regards to the water filling up all layers, there is a simple workaround which no one has thought of or mentioned yet. We should be able to create water in any layer we want simply by filling in any unwanted layers with whatever material we use for our ground or floors. We could easily make pools or lakes... we just need to fill in the bottom with our ground material and then hide those layers with our front thin layer (provided the water doesn't fill this front layer... *crosses fingers*). At least... this should work in theory, and I can't think of a reason it won't.2009-08-20 20:23:00

Actually, didn't simcity 4's (and possibly earlier ones) water work like this?

It looks to me that it will stretch into the foreground and therfore past the front thin layer (the base of the scoreboard at the end is completely submerged).

I just hope it doesn't impact thermo (I don't think it would because I imagine it to be controlled in a similar manner to global lighting, that is throught the tools menu and with a seperate, trigger-able object of it's own).

Once again, according to the video trailer,
water fills globally all the level space, from left to right and from foreground to background (far beyond the regular gameplay layers), just like "air" fills all the level... (or like the 50 extra layers glitch for a visual example)

We certainly can not decide in wich layers it appears...
The only thing that we can change is the horizontal level of the water, up and down

And this is according to the video,.. let's wait for some more information

Oh cool find on the switch. For everyone who hasn't clicked the link:

the "switch" on the back of the boat that some have thought is a buoyancy tool seems to be more of a "water sensor". Just like the proxy sensor, it has a light that lights up - but only when the object it's attached to comes into contact with water.

One idea off the top of my head for this:

a small compact item you carry around that hits the water and then instantly self-inflates into a raft. Once out of the water, it turns back into a handy-dandy carryable cube.

Don't count on it. This water is a flat horizon straight through your whole level. There probably won't be particle effects. So, no emitting water, no water "material" or anything of that nature. There will simply be a "water line" in your level which you will be able to raise or lower wherever you like.

Before you go complaining though, believe me that there's more than a good reason for this. The physics of simulating water in LBP's create mode would create a world of hurt. I'd bet your PS3 would crash more times than not trying to handle what you would do with that poor innocent water.
