Four Lions, probably the best comedy you will ever see about terrorism

Seriously though, if you are in the UK (I don't think it's being shown anywhere else) this is definitely not one to miss. Very intelligent satire, with laugh out loud moments throughout. I couldn't recommend it more

God I love that movie. The montage at the beginning is just... incredible.

Splinter(2008)

Um yah, another cheesy low budget gore thingy. If that's your thing I might say it's watchable but barely.

Worthless spoilage?:

Yeah well apparently biologist or studying one anyhow, took ages to figure out temperate was involved when the creatures couldn't track them whilst standing in a fridge.. Oh only when they rewound a video of the creature going for the car hood did it make sense.. Pshh

I saw the Human Centipede yesterday.

If you don't know what the Human Centipede is, it's a movie about a mad surgeon who kidnaps 3 people and makes them into a "centipede", with a head, an abdomen, whose mouth is surgically fused to the anus of the head and whose anus is surgically fused to the mouth of the tail. It's just hyping up how disturbing it's supposed to be, but it's not. Don't get me wrong, the premise is very disturbing, but the movie doesn't seem to know what to do with it. The escape scene at the end was the only part that had any intensity. It also advertises its 100 percent medical accuracy. 12 legs don't make a centipede. Accuracy my ***.

oh god, you saw this? it's out? i watched the trailer like three times because it's so ridiculous.

apparently, the 'doctor' supervising the movie or something was interested by the concept and figured out that you could actually keep a human centipede alive, using IV drips and stuff... but why would you want to?

Yeah, it's out in theaters and on-demand. I saw it as a gimmick movie, and I think it would have been much better if in more able hands, like Takashi Miike.

am i the only person who thought Avatar on Blu-ray was much less impressive? I didn't even see it in 3D so I'm not talking about that...

Anyway, the Bio class is watching that right now even though I keep telling the teacher to put in Osmosis Jones instead.

Osmosis Jones is a QUALITY film!

Also, saw surrogates over the weekend, didn't hate it. Didn't love it. Was good entertainment when the movie theater was sold out for Iron Man 2 in IMAX for a birthday gathering. Anyway, they could have done more with Surrogates, but I like Bruce Willis so whatever.

I was at Best Buy the other day and they had Avatar on Blu Ray on one of the display tvs... you know, the setups with the couches and big speakers and everything.

It was the "climactic battle" at the very very end.

I have to be honest. In the middle of a Best Buy, on a bigscreen LED (or plasma or LCD or whatever it was), this movie just came across as totally castrated. It looked like a video game. All I could do was laugh at what I was looking at onscreen. That sense of wonder and immersion that was so profound when I saw it in the 3D imax was nowhere to be seen.

Last movie I saw? ... Uuumm... I don't remember right now. I'll say Nothing But Trouble. Totally weird, trippy Dan Aykroyd movie that came out in the 80s. Weird beyond belief. I saw it a bunch as a kid, but watching it again now, whoa. It's a much harder movie to watch as an adult.

By the way, has anyone here seen any Gaspar Noe films? To be fair, I really kind of hate this guy's stuff. Most of it's just over the top shock value without any redeeming qualities. And then he releases Irreversible, which is FULL of redeeming qualities, but happens to contain a small handful of incredibly repulsive stuff. There's a brutal 9 minute rape scene in which the camera doesn't cut away, you just sit there and watch and the scene just keeps going and going and going.

Anyway. That being said, I find myself very curious to see his new movie Enter the Void. He's treating it a bit like an experimental film and doing a lot of "virtual cinematography," creating impossible camera angles and recreating out-of-body experiences, astral projections, drug trips, dreams, and other altered states. It seems the whole movie is told from a very subjective, altered, superhuman point of view. I'm very interested in what he's doing with filmmaking in this movie. At the same time I'm expecting more obnoxious Gaspar Noe bullcrap - He attempts to exploit the human brain's ability to be fooled into certain visceral sensations using trickery - his opening credits of Irreversible were designed to make the audience feel queasy and dizzy; the opening credits of Into the Void seem designed to give its audience a seizure or perhaps induce a fevered hallucinogenic state. This stuff's really obnoxious to me. He's throwing out mood and replacing it with these tricks to force the audience into some sort of altered state.

Anyway. All of that out of the way, here's an interesting look at a making-of reel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7UGQ2iCF1k)made by the visual effects company showing off a bit of what they're up to with this movie. It's very interesting stuff. Watch it in full screen with the music loud and your face right up to the monitor. See how you feel coming out of it.

A big warning right now though - there is some x-rated (I'm not kidding) material in this reel. Not a whole lot, but you've been warned.

I will say that they TOTALLY screwed up their setup at the one I went to. The picture was badly compressed and distorted and the framerate was freakish. It would seem to stutter and then speed up to such a rapid rate it looked like the evening news. I felt actually sorry for James Cameron for a second, because this is what his creation had been, at least for one moment and one person, reduced to: a sad, distorted, broken sales pitch for an improperly-calibrated tv in a Best Buy, where nobody cared enough to watch.

And then I remembered his 19-story castle made of money and moon rocks and the pity quickly dissipated.

Don't forget tears, after getting pwned by his exwife at the oscars. A castle made of tears.

I think it was actually displayed on some 3D tv thing, without being 3D... maybe that was it. 3D TVs exist now, right?

Might I point out that the music is composed by Dan Deacon, the same bloke who made that one music video puppet gig I made that one thread about that confused everyone and was abandoned long ago.

I loved that movie until it just turned into "Hey, check out THIS weapon!" If a bit heavy-handed, it was doing pretty well as social commentary or whatever.

I did it. I took the plunge. So far I've seen every single M. Night Shyamalan movie since The 6th Sense in theaters, and every one has been progressively worse than the previous. My curiosity is too great, but after every one I always say "never again, Shyamalan, never again." But I always do.

With Lady in the Water I didn't think it was POSSIBLE to make a worse movie. Then he released The Happening. He did it. I couldn't believe it, but he made a movie more hilariously bad than Lady in the Water. He couldn't outdo The Happening.

So I had to see Avatar. Plus I've been watching the show and discovered, much to my surprise, that it's freaking awesome.

He pulled off the impossible and made a movie even WORSE than The Happening. Worse than Lady in the Water. The worst movie Shyamalan has made, and that's REALLY saying something.

But this one wasn't hilariously bad the way the last few were. It was just unbearably bad. It was boring, awful, atrociously made. The Nickelodeon cartoon had better filmmaking. I'm going to say it again. The filmmaking is better in the NICKELODEON CARTOON. He screwed up everything he possibly could have. This is also the ultimate case study in what can go wrong when trying to adapt a sprawling, ambitious tv series into a movie.

'UP', it was quite good actually, started off on a weird depressing vibe but got better as it went on, Doug was awesome, so was Kevi-SQUIRREL!. Also my name is Russell so that was nice having a name in common with a character for once. 2010-07-13 10:05:00

I agree. The Hangover was a *******ing great movie! The plot was incredibly well written, the characters were relatable and funny together, and even my grandmother liked it. Yes, even my grandmother liked the Hangover

well rotten tomatoes isn't a reviewer itself, but an aggregate of other reviews. And it just designates each as 'fresh' or 'rotten', so lukewarm responses might yield a very good rating.2010-07-17 19:28:00

Yeah, I know that, but still, reviews are almost always low there. There are more negative movie reviewers than postive if the movie is just "decent".

OMG How was it!? It looks amazing!

It was great, but if you're someone that only likes simple plots, this PROBABLY isn't for you I'd describe it as a cross between 'The Dark Knight', 'Ocean's 11', and the Bond movies. It was very interesting, very action-packed and VERY fun. Best movie I've seen in a looong time!

i dont know what's all this about inception being super confusing. it's not like, straightforward, but it's basically coherent.

also, i actually enjoyed jennifer's body. and the movie. hahaha. but yeah, it was campy and it was totally self-aware. very entertaining.

@boomy Did you like that movie? I was with a couple of friends and one of them brought this movie, the next time he wasn't invited anymore for a good reason. Christian bale looking at himself showing his muscles in the mirror while he's having ... WHY

I love American Psycho. It's a classic as far as I'm concerned. A movie called "American Psycho" full of the kind of deviant chainsaw-violent perversions and 80s pop music fetishism as there is in that movie, and you were disturbed by Christian Bale's psycho-sexual-narcissism? I thought that was one of the funniest images in the movie actually. I know a few guys who I imagine would be like that on the job.

Not a movie, but I finished the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series. My girlfriend twisted my arm and made me watch it. By the midpoint of the first "book" I was hooked and by the end I was freaking enraptured. I never thought a nickelodeon kid's cartoon could be full of such fantastically good storytelling. I saw a few new episodes of Futurama recently, and it just seemed so pale and meaningless after watching Avatar.

Seriously, hunt this down and watch it all the way through. You won't regret it. Filmmakers and movie buffs will really appreciate it too. It's got some fantastic filmmaking and a ton of pastiche and references to movie genres across the spectrum. there's even a sergio-leone style spaghetti western episode that's actually quite good. TONS of Hiyao Myazaki influence too.

The thing it does better than most is make you EARN your respect for the characters. You hate most of them in the beginning. They're angsty, annoying, egotistical brats. A few of the characters, early on, I was SURE I would never care about. But over the hours, over the many dark and humbling turns they take, you really come to love them. And because you had to earn it, you care all the more for them in the end. Go watch this show! If by the end of "winter solstice - part 2" you hate the show and don't want to continue, then maybe you should stop. This is the midpoint of the first season. But if you're feeling it by that point, keep on, because it just gets better and better.

Religuluos!!! Kind of sad the thread for the movie got closed, though since the discussion went off track, the thread was my reason buy the movie and watch it. Anyway, it is probably my favorite movie at the moment, it is hilarious. I especially do enjoy the part with Bill Maher interviewing the US senator at the end:

Bill - "...It worries me that people are running my country who thinks, who believes in a talking snake."
Senator - "you don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator of the country." *chuckles*
Bill - *frowns*
Senator - *Win face < epic fail face*

Epic. Hopefully I will watch New Moon later today.

Yeah I dunno what the buzz about that movie was... the pacing and everything seemed so odd for me. The acting wasn't really any good, maybe that was supposed to be part of the charm? Didn't really work.

A few good laughs and generally a ridiculously light-hearted sense of fun, but... MAN... the jokes were SO CORNBALL. I laughed quite a bit, but it was mostly at just how audaciously cheesy the jokes were.

At one point they're in the yukon trying to find a rich gold mine. One of them points up to a mountain. "There it is. That's our payday!" "What are you talking about?" "See, look!" And the camera cuts to the mountain. Stars fly around the peak, and the "Paramount" logo appears. I think I woke up my girlfriend with the violence of my forehead-slap.

3 days ago I saw the movie "Dinner For Schmucks". I really enjoyed it! I saw it in a draft house (a movie theater that serves food while you watch the movie). So what I wanted to know is what movie have you recently seen and where? 2010-08-03 18:19:00

I saw Robin Hood for a dollar last night at the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse, you can eat a hearty meal & quaff a pitcher of Pabst Blue Ribbon, if you so choose, while watching a movie there, so that's always cool but.... Horrible movie! I'd heard bad things but I was really surprised, it might just be that I expect more from Ridley Scott so my expectations were too high, dunno, I just really hated it though.2010-08-03 19:46:00

If "Something, Something, Something Dark Side" counts as a movie, then that.

Other than that, Despicable Me

Definately one of my favorite movies of all time.
At the ending where they didn't tell you what happened everyone in theatre suddenly shouted AAAAAWWW!
Amazing film...

A little independent film called Bottle Shock. It is based on the true story of how California wines went from being the dirt to walk on, to some of the foremost quality in the world, rivaling the previously-thought-infallible french wines. I really liked it. It has a lot of famous people in it.

I wasn't too impressed. There are some decent laughs. I couldn't care much for the characters. Jonah Hill, when it comes to the sappy "sincere" moments, is impossible to believe. It looks like he just wanted to get it over with as fast as possible so he can get back to the funny stuff.
And there are some really good laughs, but I don't know, I wasn't big on it.

I saw the 1971 Slaughterhouse Five. It was pretty good, though I feel like if I hadn't read the book I might have just been lost and confused. The tone and humor were great ("....Are you mating now?"), but I didn't care much for many of the characters, and the stakes are just always so low that I don't think they really made it work all that well as a movie. Guillermo del Toro wants to adapt it so that should be interesting.

That being said I haven't seen it in 15 years & I don't remember too much about it so, I don't know if I'd still like it.2010-08-09 16:35:00

chinatown bootleg version.
it was like, yeah... fantastic, of course. i thought the vampire killers would be the lesbians but they were straight and the vampires were lesbian. Lame. I thought it was going to be super hot vampire killing team but what i thought was this vampire killing team got killed off pretty fast. And pretty hot. They were hot.

Saw The Other Guys. Was pretty funny. Not half as over the top as Anchorman, nor did it contain the same level of free improv-comedy fun. Much more scripted and by-the-books which was kind of a disappointment. A few big laughs though.2010-08-11 06:33:00

well as you kicked off with Coen Brothers I might as well bend the rules a little - the 2nd to last movie I watched was No Country for Old Men on Blu Ray - stunning - seen it before but on a monitor via a stolen movie file so to see it in HD was amazing - contentious comment coming here but im happy to defend it - I think its their greatest work to date.... !!

The actual last film I watched was Hitch****s 'Spellbound' which is superb for the Dali collab at the end, and seeing how Hitch**** deals with the then trendy psychoanlysis and subconsious imagery, working it in to his otherwise familiar thriller themes/plots.
