Is There A Certain Length That Pistons Can No Longer Be Invisible?

Archive: 16 posts

Because this seems to be happening to me.

I'm trying to have a character "float" across the screen, and an invisible piston would be perfect, but when i set it to 0 it stays visible.

I've never seen that... how long is the max?2009-03-28 09:21:00

Try deleting that one and put a new one and see if it turns invisible or not.2009-03-28 10:49:00

Actually, the piston - when set to zero - turns invisible except for 1 end. That is, the end you attached first. Try to attach the part you want to be invisible second.2009-03-28 13:07:00

That's right Apelles. I have had this happen a lot whenever using a long piston although I don't know what the maximum length is. I've had no trouble with short pistons, just set the minimum to zero and they go invisible but whenever I do the exact same thing with a really long one it just stays visible.

I hope MM do something about this. I know the Cornish yarg update is supposed to include an option to make the joints invisible which is defintely a good thing but whether applies to the actual piston I don't know. Would be nice if it did but I doubt it.

What I would like to see is the option to type a maximum and minimum length in because it's such a pain when attaching a really long piston to just have to sit and hold left or right for ages to adjust the length. You would think if you put your piston in place at the the maximum distance it would automatically set the minimum to zero but it doesn't. It's so annoying.

Also... The piston must not be reversed. As soon as you reverse any invisible piston it becomes visible, not matter the length.

YES... this is undoubtedly your problem, make sure your piston isn't set to "inverted"

I don't know how long you need but I have some stupidely long pistons in my new level in the making and they are still invisible. Probably that you checked "backward" option?

Why don't you attatch a piston to some dark matter and another moveable material off-screen and then attatch some invisible material/ a deactivated invisible piston to the object from there. Then you won't see the moving piston anyway.

To make invisible material, shrink the cursor down to as small as possible before drawing it or resise your object to be very small. To make a deactivated piston, put any sort of inactive swtch away from the level and hook up the wires to it, then ,if nothing can activate the switch, the piston will stay at the same legnth.

(Don't forget to make the piston stiff or it will become visible again when it moves).

Why don't you just use a rod?

Because I don't know how to make an invisible rod... do you?

I use ridiculously long invisible pistons. I think the maximum piston length is 1000 and I know I've gone over 500 with them remaining invisible.

I second the previous poster who mentioned checking to see if you set it to inverted. Inverted pistons are always visible.

Actually, they can be as long as you need them as long as you attache them directly, no matter what the distanc it will reach it, i've had some reach 3500+ in distance, just be careful, as soon as you try to change the distance by popit it, even if you go one up/down it will go to 999.
Altho i wuse this to my advantage as it would be a major pain having to take it all the way to 0 from 3k+ XD

They can also go negative which looks really weird o.O2009-03-28 20:50:00

Cool, I didn't know you could override the max length cap in that manner!
