DEVIL MAY CRY- Tribute Levels *SPOTLIGHTED* Pics included.

Archive: 31 posts

Greetings,

These are a series of levels that I have published as a tribute to one of my favourite games - Devil May Cry. They loosely revolve around the original DMC installment with familiar enemies/bosses and perfect DMC lighting which took me ages to nail on the head. I'm honoured and surprised to know that these levels have been spotlighted, so I will give my personal thanks to Morgana, GrantosUK and Ccubbage for their feedback.

Mission I - Island of Puppetry.

Play - 2,000 (w00t!)
Hearts - 290+
Tags - Beautiful, Brilliant, Points-Fest
Description:

You have entered Mallet Island, set to seal away the Emperor Mundus and prevent his ambition of destroying the Human world once again, just like your father did 2,000 years before. Entering the island's macabre castle you will have to fend off the Master's evil servants, including the colossal Phantom and evil marionettes, now powerless under Mundus' control.

Hey - checked out the three Devil May Cry levels tonight and really liked them. I was a big fan of the original game back in the day, but haven't played it in a long time.

I really like your lighting on the levels - you're going to get complaints that it's too dark from some players but the look is very DMC so I wouldn't change it. You really have a knack for setting up little Vignettes (small detailed scenes) that are composed very well. The battles aren't extremely hard but are entertaining. I also appreciated the dialogue from Sackboy you put in - very much in the style of Dante (if not quotes - I can't recall them all.)

Playing all three in a row gave me a pretty good idea of where you've grown as a creator and they do get progressively more detailed, imo. My only suggestion is to mention that you need to bring the blue key with you on the lift in part 3. I missed that.

Overall a great series of levels and worth playing from any DMC fan. Nice work 4 stars and thaks for sharing them.

A video has been put up for Part III, Part IV is underway as well and is shaping up to be the best one I've made so far. Again, sorry about the video quality, and I apologise for this double post.2009-04-04 11:36:00

Number 3 was my favourite. You captured the atmosphere of the series very well.

The scissors were really cool.

Sorry once more... 0_0

But I have a few updates regarding the new level that should be published next week, that is, if other things to do with my music project doesn't interfere with my creation. I have probably said this before, but this level (currently my sixth, wow...) is by far the best one I have created so far. I've explored some great techniques and exploited the use some pretty awesome glitches, including one or two tricks of my own, wink wink
It comes with a great amount of detail, even more than Part III which has the most detail of the ones I have published so far. The lighting and atmosphere is actually designed to creep you out for a change, which is what I tried to do with Part III but fell short of achieving (the entire design is also a lot more gothic than usual). I promise new enemies such as Frost and Fetish, as well as Griffon as the main boss. It will also feature you entering the demon world, which won't be entirely based in an organic cave as seen in the actual game but in an outdoor setting filled with black waves of demonic spirits...Or just black gas...Whatever...

I am currently making the rest of the demon world, which is gonna be real trippy. I have uploaded some images of what the level looks like so far so if you would like to check them out...

i played dmc parts 1,2,3 and i hearted all of them cos:
i love dmc
the levels are creepy, the lighting effect is really cool! (sepia?)
the sound effects, music and dialogue are well placed.
visuals are topnotch
cant really think of anything bad... (maybe a bit more enemy likeliness - sin scisscors maybe have cloak effect, like in the real game)
also maybe a bit more dialogue between bosses, i always remember dante getting real cocky with phantom.

out of the three, its hard to choose which ones the best

i especially liked the red orb part to open the door- nostalgia...
5/5 all three hearted + you

so if you feel like giving one/all of my two levels a playthrough, i'd like some feedback or constructive criticism. please

No, for one thing I can't buy one since I am apparently too young (@#$%!!) to purchase things online. Another reason why is because it would be far too easy, bringing down the experience along with the difficulty.

Played the first one this morning, really enjoyed it. I've never actually played the Devil May Cry series so can't really comment on how close it was to the actual game. But it look really well (excellent fog and lighting) and played nicely.

I'm going to pick up the rest of the levels tomorrow if I get the chance.

Good work, I gave you 5 stars.

Awesome, thank you so much! I can tell you now that the levels are not actually meant to be an exact recreation of the original Devil May Cry game so don't be surprised if and when you play the first installment (which you should 'cause it's so good!) that it isn't perfect, for it isn't meant to be. It's more or less like my own version of the game

Thanks again for the five stars, I really appreciate it!

-----------------------------------

I have some good news on the Part IV which is coming out soon - I've successfully managed to finish of the rest of the Underworld. Lots of tenticles were used here since the real thing in the original game (I do try to keep some elements the same) was based inside a collosal, pulsating and organic cave. Here are a couple of images, sadly I couldn't capture the gas or the flames in these images since the game wouldn't let me...

What you can see of the above images may change over the next few days, I may have to delete stuff 'cause my thermometer is 80% full!

I think in this case, it would totally ruin the experience of Korns' levels.
These lvls have no need for the paintinator at all.

...And thanks once more xD It took me quite a while to get the lighting correct, it's a shame you can't make LED lights invisible =( I've made all of it now, I just have to focus on the boss fight using the 10% of mercury I have left on my thermometer =O God, limits suck don't they?

--------------------------------------------

Okay, I've kinda changed the icons for my levels using pictures of Sackboy version of Dante and Vergil which I made myself:

Dante:

UPDATE!

The awesomeness! I have actually finished the level! *Gigantic sigh of relief*

...Okay not quite. But still, it's roughly around 90% complete and Burnvictim42 has kindly offered his boss-making skills to design me Griffon from the original DMC game. Cool! I have also made some pretty cool enemies which are supposed to resemble Frost and Blade, but not entirely:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=368&pictureid=3307 http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=368&pictureid=3306

I have also discovered some awesome tricks, some of which are my own (I hope...) and I have adjusted the lighting so it illuminates the room as you are moving about in it to allow for better exploring, just like luminous stone you acquire in the game. Hopefully I shouldn't receive complaints that it's too dark, yet I am still uncertain...

I hate to spoil anything else so just allow me to say, it's almost done!

EDIT: Allow me to also say, I need to modify it for two player for as I discovered today, too many people were being killed. Maybe it should just be designed for solo play...

Yet another update -____________-'

I have come to present some large changes in Part II (read, II) in a hope to really improve the visuals, since it fell short in this area more than the other three (or, four). In it I have made a whole load of material changes, edits to the lighting and the background theme and I've also made Phantom actually look like Phantom. In addition to this, I've tweaked Phantom's death slightly so that Phantom (instead of just simply falling into the pit) instead hangs from the ledge. That is, of course, before you blow him up using a whole crap-load of explosives, but this time I've needed to use some fast moving projectiles to bring him down so he doesn't block other emitters.

Other details have been changed as well to make it look nicer and hopefully you will like them more now, it is a much needed change that I've been dying to do for ages now. Check it out, and I'll tell you when the fourth part is complete and rid of all stupid mistakes.

Later,
Dawwg.

I played all three of these levels, and each one is better than the last. they are truly great levels. I did have a little problem with the boss on the third level though. The light you use to get up there got hung up and then I managed to get it loose, but it got flung really hard
somehow and stuck in the wall. Needless to say I was unable to finish. Still an excellent level though really enjoyed it. Great work!!!

Thanks so much for your feedback! I've fixed that problem (hopefully) with a nice shield of dark matter. Oh yes.

----------------------------------------------

Right, holy crap, another update.

First with the minor news - I have refurbished the published levels in the series, with new material changes and modifications to keep it up to date with my skillz...lolzzzz...

Okay so now onto the good ****. Part IV is very nearly almost finished and guess what, it's all thanks to Burnvictim42 for making the most kick *** boss design ever. This level would be finished without his mad boss-making talent as he has so kindly made me Griffon from the original game. Yes, I even have images...

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq157/redhotchilehobbit/Photo-0044.jpg http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq157/redhotchilehobbit/Photo-0043.jpg

I've just made a couple of edits to help it blend into the background (adjusting it to the level design) and now I have to add attacks such as crazy lighting strikes and what not. Go check Burn's levels out, he's deserved it and more credit is due when I finish the level. Sheer awesomeness, and I'm almost done. A few tweaks have been made so that nobody dies in two player accidentally, the lighting is better and more secrets have been added so yes, this really is shaping up to be my best level ever. I can't wait to publish it.

Just playing through them now. I`ll post my thoughts as they happen.

Level 1:

- Certainly looks good. Has an old church look about it.
- First boss. Was good. Though when he died he left a set of spikes on the ground, and due to the camera angle, i cannot see them until I stand on them.
- Also due to the same camera angle, I keep landing on candles when I`m trying to get up the steps.
- It's short! Though with so much going on I'm guessing thermo troubles.

Level 2:

- I like the new enemies
- The big wheel looks great.
- The invisibility option would help in making the boss` appearance a surprise. i could see a bolt in the floor.
- Sword through the skeleton is cool.
- Photo booths. There were 2 in the first one. I now have them turned of so they don`t screw up my file, but do you have to set them for 5 seconds? 3 is more than enough. It really takes you out of the level.
- I jumped when that spiked wall came flying!!

Level 3:

- Scissor dudes are well made.
- More photos
- I'm kinda lost here. Got a massive chasm to my right but dunno if that`s where I should be heading. Leap of faith time. So I jump and die. 5 mins of searching about and I jump again for no other reason than I'm bored and it turns out that was the right way.
- When I killed the scissors, I bounced up and landed on candles and died. For both of them.
- The boss. Pretty cool. The camera being so far to the right when you`re near the door is restrictive though.

Overall- Each gets 5 stars and level 2 gets a heart.
- Was that another photo?

Thank you so much for your feedback, I will definitely take your suggestions into account. Do you think that I need to make the fact that you have to make one giant leap of faith a little more obvious? I was pending on adding a cut-scene camera to the speech bubble which read "Again?", but I thought it would disrupt things a bit too much.

As for the photo booths, yes, I admit that I went overboard adding more than one in. However, they do actually have a purpose, believe it or not - one of the pictures are meant to be taken in a vignette area, the other is an action shot just for fun. I do think that I could have co-ordinated the camera angles a little bit better for the action pictures, but I have thought of removing them completely like you suggested in the most disguised way possible xD

Anyway, thank you for your feedback, I will definitely make adjustments based on your criticisms. Thanks again for the ratings+heart ^^

I have edited Mission III heavily based on Matt's feedback - I have given more indication to where you're meant to go (leap of faith time, anyone?) when you get to the edge of the tower, added custom elevators, removed any unwanted hazards (i.e. the candles) and made Nightmare a lot harder. And yes, I've removed the action photos from all of the levels. In addition to this, I've also added a few more design tweaks here and there and an extra hidden spot to inspect, and the camera angles now should make the level easier to maneuver around.

I spent two bloody days making these changes so I hope they're okay. Some of them you won't notice at all but I've actually put more time into making them than you would have initially thought. So...I hope they're better...Now I resume work on Mission IV...

.::Update::.

Right, I have made some really big changes to the second part of the level, and I must say, I am actually really happy with them. The changes were inspired by the second DMC installment which, in case you didn't know, was an epic failure, but I still think it's pretty good. It takes up the organic cave style from DMC1 but at the same time seems to have l more of an urban/sophisticated look like that in DMC2 which I think fits in really nicely. It also contains the most detail I've ever put into a level/an area, slightly dark but I'm still editing the lighting. I'll post pictures when I can.
