Custom Images Only from PS EYE (For Now)

Archive: 39 posts

Hi all, much as I'd rather my first post here be more positive, unfortunately the quoted article is incorrect and the launch version of LittleBigPlanet will not include the ability to incorporate images stored on your hard disk.

We are well aware of the demand for this feature however and it is being considered for inclusion after the game has been released, however at present there are no concrete plans.

(LBP Edit- Added the following response from Sam from one of his posts below to clarify why they did this)

It was taken out for a number of reasons, some of which have been mentioned in this thread already. One of the main ones was a concern over the size of levels - if you were to create a level without using any custom stickers, maxing the create thermometer, it would dwarf, in terms of physical size, one made with lots of custom stickers in. We're keen to see what people come up with even with this limitation in place.

It's a definite possibility for post-launch, but even with all the will in the world it wouldn't make it into the game now as there just isn't time.

Okay, I suppose that's fair. I still think the cash factor has something to do with it. 2008-08-18 14:09:00

That answer makes it seem not so bad. Many thanks! Still, I do hope to see it come in as a DLC in the future. It'll just force me to be a little more creative in bringing my ideas to light without hand drawing some stuff. We shall see 2008-08-18 14:09:00

Thanks Sam for dropping by and clearing the issue up. Now that a statement has actually been issued about the lack of image uploadablility I don't feel as though I've been cheated out of a feature any longer. And I can totally understand the level size issue, plus it also seems that the code isn't there yet to allow this to work as well as it obviously needs to.

I guess we'll just need to find creative ways around the custom sticker issue, like modeling the sticker in silhouette or something like that.

Actually Sam if you have time to answer a question in regards to custom art: Will there be solid colour stickers that can have their colour changed (eg can we "stick" coloured boxes of various sizes onto a surface to "draw" custom art?)

There aren't solid colours to play with in the game, however there's nothing to stop you capturing a single swatch of colour and building your own sticker palette using a camera.2008-08-18 15:32:00

I feel the same way. At least we got an answer.

Hmmm, I thought I had seen a "paint" tool somewhere, though? Any plans to add this later on in the game, mayhaps?

There was a paint tool in an earlier build of the game but it didn't work so well, so has since been taken out. Not to say it won't make a comeback, but don't hold your breath.

Or draw things on your PC, print them out and grab them by camera. Or... don't even print things out and simply capture the screen. With a bit of imagination, this drawback shouldn't get in your way.2008-08-18 16:36:00

It's a shame you can't upload but will the old PS2 eyetoy work? I'm really hoping it will since that's the one I have right now2008-08-18 21:10:00

It's not USB, is it? I don't think it works, but I may be wrong. Although, Alex did keep referring to the Eye as the EyeToy.2008-08-18 23:28:00

It is USB, it's plugged into my PS3 right now and it works with Burnout Paradise.
So maybe a possibility?

That's exactly what I thought when I heard this announcement. Also, whether it's intentional or not, it seems like it'll add to the indie DIY 'slapped together feel of the game, which a heap of high-res licensed images might destroy.

In one video he says "Using your eyetoy or Playstation Eye".

So I think that's confirmed, they're pretty much the same thing really, just with some improvements on the PS Eye.

DOH! I was kind of hoping it was still in the game. Hrm. No matter. I'll paint with material.

Huh? I'm assuming you didn't read the thread (not a big deal, it's 9 pages); there is no image importing.

On the "which camera works" subject, we believe any USB camera will do the job, but haven't confirmed it yet. If you've got a webcam sitting around however, it's worth a try.2008-08-19 16:04:00

Hope you read this Sam....
When you import an image... can you crop around the image? Say... if you wanted to import this sticker of a circle and you had a square white background... could you crop that out?
Thanks

It's a scalable square/circle, I believe. You move it over what you want to scale and press X. I remember at least one or two vids where they did that.2008-08-21 02:06:00

Idea I came up with for cropping the picture. You scale your image so that is really big then you use the cut tools that are in the shapes of a square, circle or triangle to cut the image out. Then rescale the image back down to it's normal size and poof you have your image cropped and all.2008-08-21 17:30:00

I've split the thread and started this one with the new news about importing using just the PS EYE for now guys. Thanks for the confirmation Sam. Very much appreciated.
