Hell

Hi,
I'm working on my first LBP level*, and its using the theme of Hell! i have done a decent amount of work on it, but I thought I would post on here to see if people had any ideas. I can't currently access the level as my PS3 is at my dad's, but here is a rough overview of the level so far:

The whole levels floats above a cloud of black gas. the background is wire mesh holding back a pile of flaming chunks of coal/rock.

You start on a tilted semi-circle of rusty metal, before jumping over some flaming gas onto a chunk of rock. Then you jump again on to a rusty metal arrow, where you meet the Devil, who says "muahahaha, welcome to Hell!" next you must climb the Devil's tail, before falling and grabbing a bar of hellsteel. You swing and jump along this bar, and land on a platform of rusty metal, which lifts you into the air at high speed. once at the top, you jump over a huge pillar of black gas, then fall down a rocky passage laden with flaming rocks. at the bottom, you run then jump onto 4 extremely thin pieces of metal, after which you land on a platform. Upon landing on this platform, the area behind you is flooded with flaming circle-shapes.

Thats as far as I've got. I'm toying with a long beam of rock that is supported by explosives, these explode as your running along. This throw the beam about and will eventually make it tilt and fall, so if your not fast enough you plunge into the gas below.

Any ideas/opinions? I'd like this level to be good, as my friends first level was kinda crappy (if you crashed you balloon you spawned in gas and died again)

Sounds like a very interesting concept for a level.
It would be amazing if you got to have a showdown with the devil, and if you lose he says you have to stay in hell forever!
Perhaps you break one of his creations or something, and he gets mad.

Anyway, it's a good idea and I hope you get it working well

Thanks for the reply!
I was at my dad's this weekend, and I made the following changes:
- swaped the thin pieces of metal (which didn't work) for an emitter that emits a platform that lasts 3 secs.
- added the 'Gallery of Torture', a series of sackpeople in a torture machine
- added a door and a rocket sled
- added an area where you jump over a pit that is emitting flaming coals that float upwards
- added an area where you run across flames as blocks of metal are emitted beneath you
- added an area where you drive the rocket-propelled tank from hell!
Thats all. I like your idea of fighting the devil, perhaps when you break the tank? I've started work on the elevator to heaven in my Blast Lab, and i have a few more ideas for obstacles gleaned during todays (boring) RE lesson.
Thanks,
Satan

I would expect the level Hell to come from a guy with the username Satan, maybe when you are going back to heaven (if thats the end of the story, you could have the elevator break, then you fall, and the level ends while the devil laughs in the backround.2009-03-30 23:46:00

That's actually a really good idea - I was thinking of making a sequel and that would be a perfect way to begin the next part - perhaps there is a sound of splintering metal and the piston hoisting you up breaks and then you plunge downwards, but there is fire on the bottom of the lift and it plows through explosives before dropping through gas and you have to jump out onto a platform with lots of fire and chaos and the Scoreboard? you could start the next level falling in the lift. Maybe there could be more explosives and fire and stuff that you plow through and once you get too low the lift crashes into the floor and smashes? Not sure what would be down there though, other than some Magma and the Devil and more torured sackpeople? Does anyone know how I could make magma? perhaps a mix of thin red glass pieces and flaming pieces of metal? does anyone know if a red stone matierial exists and where I could get it?2009-03-31 19:11:00

Instead of using the relatively modern vision of the Christian hell as your prototype perhaps you could draw on the description of hell in Dante's Divine Comedy, which describes hell being separated into 9 degrees, the lowest levels of which are where the betrayers like Judas, Cain and Satan are frozen in ice - the higher levels have folks perpetually drowning in mashes fed by the river Styx and that sort of thing - more interesting than running through a level that's all fire and skulls and all that.2009-03-31 22:24:00

Dante's Divine Comedy is a great idea. There is even more than just the 9 circles, he has a place before the gates of hell for those who are not worthy enough to enter heaven, but not evil enough to go to hell.

I reccommend the book by the way. You should most definately find a good summary of the 9 circles of Dante's Hell.
