level: Jumper: The Blue Zone

Hi everyone,

I have made a new Jumper level. This timeout it is the BLUE zone. If you have seen my Red Zone Level you may remeber it was my first level using my automatic sidescrolling camera. You may also remeber that it a high score type of level, where you set out to get the high score, and activating certian switches gave you the oppertunity to boost your score even higher. This time out is no different another level to go for the high score and BLUE triggers to go for even bigger scores and more aggresive lines.

Whats new in this outing is i went a little wild to kind of show off the flexabiltiy of my autoscrolling camera. This time the adventure has you zig zaging back and forth and climbing vertical to get to your goal. Also i have another custom sound track that i implemented in this level (again you win the Beat Box just for attempting the level. for passing the level you get satisfaction, and for busting out a high score you get even more satisfaction).

if you havent seen my auto screen scrolling technique and are curious about its working check out my side scroll classic demo level or look for the thread in the object showcase.

Below is a video of Jumper: The Blue Zone. I hit all the extra blue triggers in this run and show my current technique for my high score, although i know for a fact that i can get a much bigger score with a combo that i didnt go for here. (so go play it first if you dont want to spoil your experiance for figuring it out as you go, then you can checkback if you gethung up or want to see how close to the end you are. Again i kept the length relatively short as it is one life one try type level, which in my opinion makes replayable for going for high scores)

again sorry for low video quality best i have available

The thing I love about these levels, is you don't pretend to have a great aesthetic ability. You just worry about adicting and fun gameplay. Good on you. I loved the first, and will play this soon.2009-03-26 07:38:00

Thanks and hope you like this one as well. love to hear your feedback after you give it a go. In my opinion i think this one was a little easier to get from begining to end if you dont go for a big score (if you have patience and wait for the right timing), yet i foresee people having trouble with the spring section as you have to know how the rythem of the springs work (and playing online i always see people struggle with springs) but i think i have weighted thes well and set tension good so they are easy to get the rythm for the more compitent player.

Yeah i try to keep it simple as i am not that great at drawing, more focused on gameplay. I do love playing a great looking level though, but lousy gameplay can kill the best looking level.

Read: Dead space. lol.

The thing about the graphics is that you are not trying to have good graphics. Also, the whole red/blue/rainbow zone thing means you don't have to worry about story etc, just gameplay. It has a niche. It isn't trying to hide the graphics either, which is why I dislike most sillhouette levels. I like the unique style. Ahh, where was I? Oh, playing the level:

Rating:

Graphics: 7.5/10
Gameplay: 10/10
Sound: 8.5/10
Replay: 10/10
Unique features (camera): 9/10
Total

+ The music is relaxing, and brilliant.

+ great use of combos to go for a high score, INSANE replay value!

+ good gameplay, as usual

- WAY too adicting

+ Makes you think to figure out best combo routes

+ plasma never gets old

- So little to comment on! Just brilliant, combo-based gameplay with an awesome music track in the background. 5/5 hearted, brilliant

Could you check out my level? It is in the projects forum, called "The Legend of Maui". Please and hopefully thankyou!

I tried this level too, and I think it's even better than the first! (I finally finished that one!) I love the creative use of the plasma ball being the background, and I also love the music. The secret sections are a nice addition too.

I found your level to be overall challenging, additive, original and last of all, FUN!

It looks awesome, and I already know the soundtrack... it's sick. I might actually throw in LBP to play this.

Did you ever get to check out the ListenUp podcast where they mentioned your following music player technique? It literally blew their minds that people were able to do this with LBP when I told them about it.

Glad you liked this one. doing a sequel was new for me. In the first one i just came up with the idea of adding bonus area after i had layed out the main path, becuase i thought it was easy and wanted to add a little something for people like me that can make it harder and boost the score. This time around i was working with in that concept already so good to hear you thought this one was better. personally i cant decide which one i like better (still know i havent maxed out my personal score on this one though).

hopefully having the video available here right away will help people that get stuck at certian point. (by the way i have also recently added a video to the red zone thread if anyone played that before and was getting hung up somewhere https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9594 )

yeah heard the podcast thanks for forwarding the link, and was pretty cool to hear that. it would of been really cool if they mentioned a level or something. my tech demo didnt get to much play unfortunately maybe have to delete and republish it to get more visability. anyways the technique for follow music is much different than technique used in my jumper levels. For those interested in the jumperlevels i just need to shrink the speakers on one piece of floaty and attach to the piece holding the camera so it will always be heard. check out my other demo or thread for the follow technique.

This is definitely a great platformer.

The extras are great, allowing the talented platformers to get something out of their skill. The background looks really neat how it's always moving and buzzing. I also love the moving screen, it's really well done, and is probably pretty ingeniously made. The shortness is ok, as the level is a one life only level.

The only thing that could change our the visuals. You should make the platforms look cool, and and detailed. The dark matter just looks a bit weird, but at least it's coloured.

Overall, great level! 5 stars!

Thanks cog. I don't know if you checked out the side scroll classic level i published that was the red zone before i did the finishing touchs and has the basic mechanics showing for the auto scrolling (while some switches arent insight they should be intuitive if try to build). the platforms are black rubber actually and not dark matter. I had went with black rubber in the red zone and just continued that style here. Thought it looked alright but i could try switching up the materials and see how it turns out.

The reason it's so hard for people to get is because the way MM made it, the timing is slightly unrealistic. It took me a bit to get used to when you need to jump for optimal height, but it was frustrating because, to me at least, I found it unrealistically late. Nowadays I'm very good at these parts because I learned exactly when to jump, but I still think it's at an unrealistic time.

i found working with te strenght and length options along with the weight of the material placed on top can really impact thepreformance of the springs. i feel the spring part in this level came out pretty good and consistant in its usage. that was a big thingwhen i put it in was to make sure it didnt involve lucky timing when it came time to jump as i have seena lot in other levels. here i found i made it pretty consistant i think do to the weight of theplatform beiing much greater than the player, so once u get it going the wieght of the platform keeps it movingup and down.

Congrads to Shenoa77 for taking first place!!!!!

Thank you.

It only took me a million tries!

Your jumper series are my absolute all-time favorite levels to play. And I always return to play them over and over again. They are timeless.

I was 19 in the leaderboards!!!

Anyways here we go:

+ I like the style
- It gets hard to know the boundaries when you are on the turning wheel
- sometimes the background hurts my eyes

Overall:4/5 very good

I came, I saw, I failed miserably! Seriously, I'm so horrible at these types of levels! Thought I'd give it a shot irregardless! I love the custom music, background, simple colors...everything!

Really nice! 5 star!
