The problem with forums...

Archive: 18 posts

I'm thinking out loud here, Sparked by Zommy's thread...

Some members have expressed concerns over diminishing user traffic at LBPC. This is to be expected.
When Little Big Planet hit the shelves, there was a massive swell in individuals looking for an appropriate forum to discuss the game. Now that the tide of gamers is starting to relax and many individuals have moved on from LBP and stopped posting.
This, of course does not mean that LBPC is 'Dying', as some have put it. It just means it's slowing down.
Eventually this forum will settle down into a steady lull of regulars and it will be up to the hardcore fans to keep it going for as long as they can.

Me, I hope to be a part of that group for a long while. I still enjoy LBP, even though I don't play it as much as I did in the months it was released. And I hope to continue to see the rest of you both in-game and on-forum. But I won't sweat it if a few members depart for something else.
To those I say good luck and thanks for the laughs! No hard feeling hope to see you again.

Additionally;
The number one killer of forums such as this:
Too many chiefs, not enough Indians.
As members come and go, the veteran members of a particular forum might get elevated to a status of responsibility (Mod's, Admin's, distinguished memberships, etc...). This is well likely to eventually deter new people from joining.
In a group of 10 people, it sucks to be a private amidst commanders.

PS:
Fun drinking game, Take a shot every time I say 'Forum'!

Im a hardcore member.

Most forums I went to didnt last this long. If this goes really bad then we should affiliate with a big gaming forum. I doubt this will die though.

With the giant center around community in LBP, and seeing as it will be a LONG LONG time before LBP dies (probably never since expansion packs will come out, adding huge new gameplay elements, and then LBP2 will be coming out and the hype will cause people to play the original LBP again), I doubt this site will come to the end that you predict. Plus, LBP PSP will bring new members and activity, as will LBP 2. Hard to see a game with endless content dying as you predicted. Someone somewhere is working on a level that will change the way we see LBP. I know it.2009-03-26 00:30:00

Well, this is certainly the largest game-specific forum I've ever been part of, and it seems to have enough of a following to last us well into LBP2, or whatever comes next.

I think of sites like GTplanet.net which never really go away, even if the games do, because there is enough of a community following which warrants continual input.

Morrin, you've said something important, which is that it's not fun to be a private among commanders. I don't see any benefit to promoting veteran members to "higher power" I think the XP system takes care of this in light of post counts, which are no more than spam awards anyways.

I've seen a lot of veteran members disappear (or are simply AWOL) from this site over the last few weeks (NinjaMicWZ, OCK, Takelow, Voltiare to name a few), but I've also seen tons of new faces, so this is a good sign.

However, if this site is to survive in the long haul, there needs to be enough off-topic content to hold people over during the lull that will be between game releases. Or, in other words, there has to be a reason to come here and post other than for simply LBP-related discussion.

Do I think there will always be people around here involved in LBP related activities? Sure, I've yet to see a non-MMO game with the replay value offered by LBP, so it follows that as long as there are people playing the game, there will be people posting on LBP forums.

I played Ultima Online back in the day, and was a regular on the Stratics boards (and eventually a mod). That game came out in 1996 I believe and it is still being played today. Although UO doesn't have the same community content that LBP does, there were a lot of things like player-created shops, guilds, museums, quests, and the like to keep the community strong and involved for many years.

LBP has hit a particular niche in the gaming world, and it will undoubtedly be around for a very, very, very long time - as will message boards such as this one. Players need a way to promote their own created levels and find others to play, and a message board is probably the single best way to do that.

Even if there were no future updates to LBP of any kind, neither the game or LBPC would be likely to go away anytime soon. Pooling the creative powers of the gaming community is a brilliant format, one that will serve both the players and MM in the long term.

Yes, I agree with Thegide.... as some members have gotten tired, over the last 2 weeks I've suddenly been watching a bunch of new faces come in - along with some pretty significant level content that got me excited again. If Sony and MM play there cards right LBP will be around for a while - and if they introduce great new gameplay mechanics the opportunities are endless.

Keep in mind, also, that many of the early creators are still going strong. I see Jaeyden is coming out with some new stuff soon (I'm always on the edge of my seat waiting for his new levels), Wexfordian still seems pretty active, I know Thegide is working on some stuff that I'm REALLY excited about (don't worry, Dude... I'm keeping my mouth shut). I've slowed down a bit in level creating, but am still moving forward.

I'm really expecting some of the new releases from MM to kick some of the excitement back up.

He's dealing with real life issues right now, but assured me he'll be back when he's done. Nothing bad, though.

Anyway, thus, the life of a forum. People come, people go. It happens everywhere, every time. Members will always cry and complain about something, as others will fight for it. No matter what forum you go to, this will always happen. Don't believe me? Go, be a member of another forum (ANY!) for about 4 months... Keep an eye out on people's attitudes (and possibly even your own!). You'll see. If members really have a problem with this place, the exit is right there. Best of wishes to them, then!

Funny how following rules such as "no cursing, no advertising, respecting others" leads to forum drama.

The problem with this forum and what will eventually help it die is all those categories and sub-categories.

People when they create a forum generally it works better to have as much sub forums as possible, the clearest categories possible. They also think it is more manageable, easier to moderate. This is all an illusion.

One of the best moderated most popular gaming forum ever, NeoGaf, is having only 2 categories. "Gaming" and "other". This might be extreme in our context here but just as an example, you still can have intelligent discussions over there to the contrary of IGN or Gamespot forum. There's also a truckload of industry insiders, generally annoyed at fanboy ******** and lame stuff we see in most major forums.

Having less categories would be benefital for the forum. What happens is that people would see more new post made and faster. This create an illusion of activity that in turns will incitate people into participating. When there's too many categories, you see the slowdown in posts way more rapidly and easily. When people have this impression the forum is dying, it incitates them to move on. This is clearly what's generally happening here.

In my humble opinion, I would reduce the forum rooms to the following (sub forums between brakets):

-Site news and important info (Site contest)

-Other LBP news and suggestions (Story levels)

-Showcase (Spotlighted levels, Level reviews)

-Help

-Other discussions

Arguments have happened but been patched up with a no scope to the face later in the day. Our forum is the exception to this rule! but excluding us yeah you are right

In a smaller forum, that's a good setup. However, we are too big for something so simplified. If we did that, the forums would be a right mess. There would be complaints that it is hard to find what you want, that your thread got buried under others too quickly (which is already an issue in the Level Showcase), and that it is simply too frustrating. Also, addressing the fact that you think the organization will kill this forum: all forums die. Some attribute it to one thing or another, but I think the death of this site will be lack of interest in the LittleBigPlanet franchise. I count on sequels and other handheld versions to retain interest as long as possible, but it will eventually die out. My goal is not to keep this site alive as long as possible, but to make sure that the members enjoyed their time here. If organization kills this forum, then "oh well", we had a good run. We're doing what we (and you guys) think is best, and so far it's worked fantastically.

Indeed my friend. I'm also finding a problem because the thread asks. I still like the forum as it is but if you ask myself what will contribute the most to its demised, I told you.

I'm curious if you've seen/been at neogaf.com though. They've been managing this thing in a way that might appear unusual but today it's one of the biggest AND cleanest forum around. There's only 2 sections. I'm sure LBP Central would benefit begin somewhere in the middle between the current form (wich I perceive as an extreme in matter of number of sections) and the opposite wich would be Neogaf.

Anyhow, this is all just suggestions of course. It's not "my" forum.
