Unhearted: Drakes Misfortune, pics, gruntosuk

Archive: 69 posts

Hi again,

I created this new level whilst working and getting a little stuck when making Siberia 4. When I could'nt think of anything to add in that level I moved into this one and started, well, basically messing around and having fun. Heres the info..

Unhearted: Drakes Misfortune by GruntosUK

After creating to many levels that did'nt get enough hearts to stick on cool levels, Drake hears of an artifact that can grant him unlimited hearts and plays. Can You help him retrieve the artifact and get him playing LBP again?

You can find the usual things in this level as you will the rest of mine, platforming, puzzles and secret areas to find. I created this with a view to it being fun to play. I think you'll enjoy getting the artifact.

I'll do feedback in return for who ever leaves it.

Here are some pics

Thanks again to HardSync and Tameturtle for beta testing and giving me suggestions.

Have fun!

Dear god you make levels quickly. It's like you don't even have to stop to think about how you're going to design things... it's just there ready waiting to me made in your brain!

Anyways, looks pretty cool from the pics. I'll have to check this one out later. Great play on the level title btw.

I will absolutely give this a runthrough.

Regardless of the execution, the idea is brilliant. Unhearted = awesome!

And thx for playing Little LOST! It's always appreciated when people follow through on F4F.

This level was a lot of fun! Loved the platforming, the humor was well done.

My only MINOR gripe was in a specific room (let's see if I can describe the room...). It had candles, was multi level, you had to pull a switch on the left and the right. Great room, but the camera seemed to be zoomed out a little far. I've got a 60" DLP TV and was having a difficult seeing what exactly to do because everything seemed zoomed out a little far. Not a big deal.

I played in the final area for about 10 minutes! I left with little bits of "objects" broken all over the place XD!! Great fun!

I'll take a look at that camera Ccubbage. I like messing around in the end bit to. Its actually based off a level that me Kappa and Hardsync like to pop into everynow and again, I forget the name, Kappa has it hearted I think, the whole level is just like that ending section

Thanks for playing it everyone

That was AWESOME! The humor reminded me a bit of the MGS pack with the trophy levels. I'm still laughing at the ending.

Playtesting stuff I noted:

I fell into spikes once and I must've hit them at just the right angle because I just pushed them to the side...might need glued down.

The guy at the end of the first race says "need to need"...probably a typo. He also says "thats" instead of "that's", but that's just me being anal retentive.

Visible proximity switch and speaker on the artifact...though I'm thinking that you might have meant that to be ironic.

I did have to self-destruct once. At the sticker switch right at the start of the second race, I went left and ended up behind the wall. I couldn't figure out how to get out.

That's all I noticed. I loved the water, and the puzzles and gameplay are top notch as always. If I had to pick between this and From Siberia for a franchise for you to pursue, I'd actually choose this.

I'm just a bit peeved that you can crank out something this amazing on a whim. Even if I had an idea this good, it would take me a week to make a publishable copy and probably a month to get it to this level.

It's remarkable. And I hate you.

Actually, the level the ending is based on was by a charming individual named krdlink who told me that my level "What's the Matter" needed work. I promptly went to check out this person's levels and ... he was right. My levels did need work. it's called something like "Try to Live" or "Try not to die" ...

I also recommend "Wee" by the above individual, and "Unnamed Level", which is right on par with Geosautus's levels.

Wow, it's crazy how fast you made this level, it's not one of those craptacular levels that were made in under a second, it looks, and plays greatly. It takes me a really long time to make a level, as I sometimes get bored.

The whole theme was great, with how you did a parody of Uncharted, and used the style that MM went with when they made the MGS pack. The humor was hilarious, and well said, with no stupidity, and no noticeable spelling errors. The detail was great, and showed you put effort into this. The platforming and puzzles were all great, and pretty original.

There were only two things that I didn't like; dangit! now I forgot the first one... argh. Well the other was the ending, were the scoreboard was. I know you put so much detail into the rest of the level, that there were thermo restraints, but the area looked pretty terrible. Kinda reminded me of some stupid levels I had played. (No offense.) There's probably nothing you can do to spice that area up, so maybe use that imagination of yours, and think of something to make it better.

Overall, it was a great level, 5 stars and hearted! Also, for F4F, could you do my newest level, 'The Platformer'? Thanks!

I agree Thegide, Gruntosuk cheats! He just coppies japanese levels with 0 visibility! That is why he creates so quickly!! DEATH BY ROFLBEAR!

In all seriousness though, the level is great. I got the high score, and only missed 2 secrets, although I know exactly where they were and didn't pay attention (the collapsing bridge one, and the end of the second race).

Also, the visuals were nice, although you should consult Vmethos regarding your waterfalls.

I loved the story lol. The witchdocter was ugly though. And Rocketcheetahs = Awesome.

5 stars, hearted (h4h) and tagged RAMP!

yes I'm joking about H4H and the tag lol, tagged it beautiful. Could you possibly check out my "The Legend of Maui" projects thread though? It is up near the top so it's easy to find!

OK... Let me get this straight... this is what you do when you have a creative block?!?! Ugh... Sickening.

So here's my thoughts after playing your "scratch-paper" level :hero:

Pros:

+ The title - I absolutely love it!
+ Fantastic custom content. The witch doctor is fabulous (though I had one con for him - later...)
+ Vines! What an awesome decorative flair (and sometimes quite useful as well).
+ The lighting was excellent across the board. Visually, very pleasing.
+ Speaking of visually pleasing... I loved the water fall! Fabulous.
+ Great puzzles (although solving them the first time and completing a race was impossible - at least for me).
+ The swinging boulder! Just plain fun.
+ The "prize" at the end is a riot! So true too (am experiencing it first hand this week with my new level).
+ Excellent mechanics.
+ Tracking and reporting the secrets discovered is outstanding. Virtually guarantees replay (I know I'll be back).
+ Your use of the planes combined with lighting and camera angles makes for a very enjoyable, polished experience.

Cons:

- I noticed a visible block of dark matter and an emitter above the waterfall - perhaps this is deliberate, but to me it's distracting and unattractive.
- Also noticed visible pistons in the water (the log raft jumps section). Again, if this is by design, then nevermind.
- After the "Mechanism Engaged..." message, the switch that is lowered (hanging upside down from between the other two switches) is attached to a thin platform. I jumped down and plane-shifted into the inside of that middle section - on top of the platform (piston side). Was able to jump down from in there, so not a big deal. but...
- During the next water crossing (the one with the vertically moving sections of grass), I fell into the water and right through into the inner workings below. Had to retry, of course.
- On the last witch doctor, when I tried to jump over his legs, I kept plane shifting back onto his right arm. Was frustrating - eventually with just the right jump, then no problem (kinda nit-picky, I know).
- OK This last one (two actually) was very frustrating...
Just for fun, I jumped onto the platform with the trophy cheetah and was messing around, when it rolled off to the left and I got stuck underneath it. I had to retry. But the last checkpoint was on the other side of a now closed door. No way that I could find to open the door, so I had to restart the level. Now... considering that I had only found one secret, I was planning to replay anyway... but you really need another checkpoint on the other side of that door. Because the same thing happened to me on my second play... I got down to the rocket cheetah playground and the first cheetah I rode sent me spiraling to my death... only to be re-spawned back up and behind that closed door.

All in all,a very nice level. Excellent game play; very pretty to look at; a decent challenge without unnecessary frustration; and a good laugh or two.

Still irks me though that you can make something this polished as a side effort. :hero:

Nice job!!

Oh, and I still only found three secrets (although I found a couple spots that gave me the "Subtask Complete" sound, but I imagine they were only parts of the puzzle). So I will be back!!

Not a big deal.

Tried fixing this and reducing the camera size does'nt give you a big enough view of the room to see everything you need. I'll leave this for now see if anyone else has this problem. Thanks for noticing though.

Thanks Ccubbage

I fell into spikes once and I must've hit them at just the right angle because I just pushed them to the side...might need glued down.

Now glued down

I did have to self-destruct once. At the sticker switch right at the start of the second race, I went left and ended up behind the wall. I couldn't figure out how to get out.

You got into the secret the wrong way actually, I've fixed this, see if you can find the real entrance

Visible proximity switch and speaker on the artifact...though I'm thinking that you might have meant that to be ironic.

No, not irony, an oversight, now fixed

I'm just a bit peeved that you can crank out something this amazing on a whim. Even if I had an idea this good, it would take me a week to make a publishable copy and probably a month to get it to this level.

It's remarkable. And I hate you.

Well thank you kind sir

Thanks frizby

There were only two things that I didn't like; dangit! now I forgot the first one... argh. Well the other was the ending, were the scoreboard was. There's probably nothing you can do to spice that area up, so maybe use that imagination of yours, and think of something to make it better.

I've had to remove two rocket cheetahs just to fix the problems people have had, I added one checkpoint and pushed the thermo over the limit. Nothing I can do to spruce this up I'm afraid sorry.!

Thanks Cog.

Also, the visuals were nice, although you should consult Vmethos regarding your waterfalls.

I wanted to create my own, give it my own slant. I know how VMethos created his, we had a conversation about them when he first released Silvrean. I thought it better if it was original.

The witchdocter was ugly though!

Kinda the point

Thanks Dkjestrup

- I noticed a visible block of dark matter and an emitter above the waterfall - perhaps this is deliberate, but to me it's distracting and unattractive.

I've changed the material to rock and hidden the emitter. Should look better now.

- Also noticed visible pistons in the water (the log raft jumps section). Again, if this is by design, then nevermind.

Cant do anything here really, I don't want to upset the apple cart by fiddling around now, I do know how to fix this but sadly can't.

- After the "Mechanism Engaged..." message, the switch that is lowered (hanging upside down from between the other two switches) is attached to a thin platform. I jumped down and plane-shifted into the inside of that middle section - on top of the platform (piston side). Was able to jump down from in there, so not a big deal. but...

I think I know the part you mean, if I do, its fixed

- During the next water crossing (the one with the vertically moving sections of grass), I fell into the water and right through into the inner workings below. Had to retry, of course.

Again its upsetting the apple cart, if you can remember which jump, I'll try and sneak some more gas in there.

- On the last witch doctor, when I tried to jump over his legs, I kept plane shifting back onto his right arm. Was frustrating - eventually with just the right jump, then no problem (kinda nit-picky, I know).

This happened on all the other characters to, I forgot this last one. I've raised his arm, no more problems

- OK This last one (two actually) was very frustrating...

Fixed and fixed Place a checkpoint in front of the emitted door, glued down the artifact and added a checkpoint before the funpark.

Thanks v0rtex2002

-------------

Thanks for playing everyone and leaving great comments, I'm over the moon people are having the fun I had when making it and in fact hoped they would. I'm pleased people find a lot of these bugs and allow me to fix them, i think it should be OK now, and perhaps ready to make the push on Cool Levels (which is what it was designed for)

Thanks again!!!

Holy nuts! You make levels WAY too fast... not more than a week ago you published part 4: Sabotage, and now this?! :O I just started it, and saw my name was mentioned, wahaha that was cool I will keep your comment fair, and WILL beat any highscore that tries to beat me haha.

I will post a big bunch of feedback somewhere among the next days probably.

Hopefully you'll not get all the secrets in one go, and hknowing how to do the puzzles quickly will get you better times on the races, should make the scoreboards a little more instresting on this level

No problem. I found a workaround. I shift my couch about 2 feet forward during this part of the level, then back when I'm done. You may want to put a magic mouth in suggesting this to the player, however.

The visuals are amazing.

The humour is well executed.

Everything is great. The rocket cheetahs was the best part though. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! (Seriously!!!)... (Well... maybe not.)

I'm sorry GruntosUK, but it took me only 2 tries Anyways, now that i got a highscore: Here's some feedback:

Pros:
- Funny story. It was a really good story! I love stories that "makes fun of"/"use" LBP, meaning that you makes references like H4H and plays/hearts etc That's what i liked about the MM levels too.
- Looks. The looks are at times somewhat unpolished, some rough shapes and the thin lanes are sometimes too square... but nothing gamebreaking The overall looks were really great, and looked like a temple should look.
- Gameplay. The gameplay was good! Some nice racing segments, and some good puzzles.
- SECRETS! Yeah you got me again... secrets. I've said it before, and i'll say it again, i LOVE secrets. I will always find them (you know i do...) and no secrets is safe for me! Woooo. Anyways, about the secrets in this level. There were some that were really well hidden!! Some were extremely hard to spot, and others made you go out of the route the level takes you. (You probably know which one i'm talking about... but not sure But i'm not going to spoiler it.) Unfortunately, once you know how the secrets work, you will soon find all of them since they are then not too hard to spot.

Cons:
- Some minor issues....
- First one i think of, is that you can get stuck at a secret. (don't worry.. probably not a spoiler since it's easily spotable, but hard to find out how to get there) if you jump at the place just a bit before the race start, you switch into the back layer. Since the door is closed to your left now, and there's a thin layer in front of you, you can't get out... thus needing to kill yourself.
- The secrets. Even though they were well hidden, and paintinators would be highly inappropriate in a cave, sticker switches would indeed be the best solution. The problem is, that there's one that is hard to spot even though you've "unlocked it" by a series of grab switches... (you know which one i mean right?) The cardboard board that moves in place is just out of sight... so.. if not intended then please extend it a tiny bit more so it''s visible.
- The last magic mouth is visible, and the scoreboard is plain

Well that's it i guess o.O I loved it once again Thanks for enjoying me, and giving me secrets! Yay!

Nice level.. It was enjoyable, and nice to look at. I did not go much into the secrets and dialouge boxes. I found the level to be rather relaxing to play, and not especially challenging.

I liked the overall layout, and how you spent some time at the different locations, and instead of just running forward.

I only found a single issue: At the water, just after running through a race gate. I managed to fall through the water without dying, and ended up in small gab under the level!?

a lot of players aren't going to want to move their couches closer though, or they may have fixtures that are fastened down to the floor. Then what? huh?
Magic mouth at beginning of level: "Please make sure your chair/couch may be freely moved during play. If it is fastened to the floor you may have a furniture set which is incompatible with this level. If this is the case, do not expect optimal performance out of this game. This is NOT the creators fault - this is YOUR fault. The creator has simply pushed the play area to it's limits in order to create the best gameplay experience. You may use binoculars as an alternate solution."

I'll stop now. It wasn't THAT bad. Maybe I'm starting to need glasses.

Lol cubbage, thats far to much text for even the eight magic mouths you are allowed on screen at once. I'll just fix the camera! I'll do it first thing tomorrow and see if its any better, i think if i split it into zones it will work a lot better.

Either that or buy binoculars, they are cheaper than wheels for the couch I've heard

My favorite part of that rocket cheetah bit is how the rockets get embedded in the wall when the cheetahs implode. Just like in real life!

You really did a great job of capturing the charm of krdlink's level. A beautiful homage.

The level has gotten 717 plays in 48 hours, and is on page 5 of cool levels!

It seems Cool Levels likes it to. I cant help but think if the level was all the rocket cheetah playground I'd be on page 1 though with 10000 plays!!!

Yes, but AS A JOKE!!!!

Definately an interesting point, however - probably something we as level designers should seriously look at (I'm actually jumping into serious mode here for a moment) - people like to see things break, they like things to blow up, and they like the action parts. It's these things that drive games and make them fun.

Think about the Splat Invaders series for a second - no matter what I do to try to make it interesting, I always get the same comments in the end (even from you): "The Splat areas are the best parts of the levels".

And what about "The Crystal Cave in Autumn"? Beautiful level with a ton of stuff, but it's the cart ride that everyone remembers.

Maybe you've stumbled on something here - we should be spending more time on key areas of our levels making things crack, break, and blow up instead of walking around, jumping, and pulling switches.

Come to the think of it Cubbage you are right, the mine cart in xkappax's level sticks in your mind, as does the splat invader sections in yours. I actually designed this level with the cool level crowd in mind, its got plenty of set pieces, is fairly quick paced, and colourful (oh and and has rockets in it)

We are all using ever more complicated logic gates and puzzle ideas when people only want to, as you said, blow things up, break things and have fun. You've got me thinking of another idea now

Of course, I finally make a level mostly on my own, and the only part everyone remembers was the part my husband made.

and I agree. People love stuff blowing up. It would be an added bonus if it were blowing up and rocketing across the level at the same time, though.

It was amzing :O. It was hard and satisfying and I loved it! And yes it is me again and no you don't have to give feedback on my level (again). I liked the water fall and the platforms where they lowered themselves. The influence of your From Siberia with love series is clearly seen. Secret Areas! Green LEDS! The puzzle with the blocks was one of the hardest... Me killing silent_series in th process...But we got it figured out. There isn't that much to complain about really... The cheetah part was Hilarious though. With cheetah limbs flying everywhere! xD.2009-03-27 21:46:00

Thanks for the comments, there is a checkpoint, pop sackboy and you'll return to the start of the section

Yesterday I managed to get up on top of the level, I could see all the dark matter and rough edges you really should'nt see

Lol, after GruntosUK showed me how the level should've been played (The puzzle and one of the secrets) i found out that i was being kind of a dummy I was making the puzzle harder than needed, and one of the secrets was WAY easier than i did it lol....

Ah well, Gruntos and i had a laugh

And i managed to get 500 more points, that's always good..

You were doing things in a rather complicated way Thommy, I'm gonna have a run at it now you've showed me how to get the multipliers, see if I can get to your score, I'm 10000 off at present 2009-03-28 16:22:00

This is a fantastic level. It has great visuals, puzzles, secrets, humour, the list goes on! I couldn't give it less than 5 stars and a heart.

The only area I feel it was lacking in was the platforming. I think it should have been a bit more difficult. Other than that, brilliant.

Just got done playing this and was lol'ing because not half a planet away on the same page (page 3 right now)is a level with 2500 plays called...wait for it....."cat race"! Awesome job, loved everything about it. Loved the attention to detail, the story and the puzzles and platforming. 5 star and hearted. Only suggestion I have is a spoiler so I'll send it to you P.M.2009-03-29 08:56:00

I'll give my feedback and try not to delete it this time! (No Gruntos, I didn't try the things you suggested, but will try next time if it happens again).

+ Great design
+ Good Title
+ Liked the humour throughout
+ Good puzzles

- The main problem i had was same as CCubbage and a few others said as well, was the camera at times was very distant and made it almost impossible to see where you were or what you had to do.
- The first race with the three cushions. For a start had trouble climbing the platforms to get there, because there seemed to be some sort of small obstruction on the top ledge that kept knocking me down again when i tried to jump on top.
- With the three cushion puzzle itself i ran out of time way before i was anywhere near completing the puzzle, for two reasons. Firstly i couldn't see the glass lift and secondly because of that, i pushed the first cushion all the way across, and then had a lot of trouble getting it back again, because sackboy kept grabbing the switch for the lift instead of the cushion (thats how i noticed the lift by accident). Maybe reposition the switch and make the lift more visible.
- Where one of the sticker switches is in an alcove to the left, when the bubbles dropped, i couldn't see them, so just ran around trying to collect them, but got killed by a hidden candle, that's a bit naughty, maybe reposition that or use a led instead.
- The sticker switch in the back layer near the second race was awkward, because every time i went to pull the switch or collect the bubbles, the race gate started activating, which meant i had to keep running backwards and forwards to collect a few bubbles at a time, so the race didn't start without me being there.
- Near the start, when you climb to the top and the character is already there to meet you, there's a grammatical error in his speech box. He has one need too many. He says 'I don't need to need run jump etc.'
- (Last one I promise!) The mouth is showing at the scoreboard.

Sorry if the cons list looks very long, but they are only minor quibbles and I loved the level overall, thought it was great and only wish i could do something as good for a 'side project'!

I didn't even bother with the jaguars at the finish, because i assumed that was the humour continued and was just having a pop at the ramp/cat/10,000 hearts types.

I noticed that as well, it cracked me up!!
Actually went in and played the **** thing, it was AWESOME!!

Anyways, I just played your level Gruntos and it was brilliant.
Not really much to add to that without repeating what everyone has already told you.

Gave it 5 stars and a well deserved heart.

I love this game and I'm looking forward to 2!

I just skip the comment on the visuals as you know how much I like yours...very well done again! LOL

1st puzzle I don't know what I was thinking but it took me 15 min to get. I kept trying to do the wrong thing. I was over thinking it bad!

Love the vines!

I wish they would show slack...I wanted to this on my BORG enemies (simulate the tubing)

The witchdoctor says "I dont 'need to need' run, jump, swing and solve puzzles, I just teleport" I think you don't need the second need! LOL

I am funny about speech bubbles they should say what they are supposed to say! LOL

At the waterfall, It was a bit distracting to see the piston on the moving water...

At the start of the 2nd race I could see the switch in a cage so I jumped up to investigate and was unable to jump down, I had to commit suicide

Loved the 'playground' I'm afraid I broke all my cheetahs!

Great level!

4 stars a heart and Fun tag

This level needs less awesomeness and more cheetahs exploding!!!!!!! Also, I would request that you add many more story items. Especially that snake. Oh, and maybe that wrestler.2009-03-30 17:41:00

Just got around to playing this level and had a great time with it! I loved the visuals and the humor throughout! The gameplay was also very fun with nice puzzles to figure out. Really, my only criticism is that the platforming sections seemed a bit "tight", but I was able to get through them without much trouble overall. Oh, The cheetah prize at the end was hilarious as well! I managed to hit the wall and fly straight up and back to the beginning of the level, well, close to the beginning.

Anyway, very nice level!

Time for my review :kz:

I played your newest level yesterday because I still owe you a F4F. Well first of I like your humor. Being part of the community (thanks for the LBPC Sticker!) now makes it even more funny.

But than stupidity stroke. I honestly got stuck at your first puzzle. Yes, the one where you have to shuffle around the 3 blocks. I thought, I had to put the blocks in the glas lift in the order shown on the left and found it especially hard to pull them over each other. My suggestion - for stupid people less stubborn and patient than me - make three simple rectangles in front of the symbols on the left so the player knows that he has to move them THERE and not get them up in the elevator which is - if correctly used a very good idea by the way.

Once i got over that one I immediately got stuck on the second puzzle and this time because of a misunderstood sound clou you gave me. I grabed on of the 3 lower sponges and the "tata" sound came so I figured I need to touch them in the right order to lower the lift but nothing happend and I got this "tata" sound everytime. Until I saw the little green piece in the shadow on the rock. My suggestions here would be to play the "tata" sound only once so the player knows whatever he had triggered is now triggered. And in addition light the green piece to lower the lift better so the player actually sees that there is something to do and does not confuse it with decoration (like I have).

After that everything worked like a charm. Your way of making the player walk in circles (coming back to the place he was before) was very well made. Your very well made visual design was consistent and let me dive into the mood of a temple right away. This is on a par with the design of Mm.

At one point - I think I uploaded a picture of it - I managed to get on top of the green hill and run into an invisble darkmatter blocker of yours. I have to give you kudos for even placing those, this shows how well you think your level through and is a sign of professionalism. On the other hand ... if I as a player manage to get up there I want some reward for that and not a smack on my forehead by a piece of invisble wall. Those should only be used to make your level 100 % tight and fail proof. You could have easily put a nice little secret up there so why didn't you?

The rest - the platforming - though hard at times - was very well made and fun. You really paced the level well. What made me laugh out loud (lol) was the "artifact" one finds and the ... well "free play area" you offered as a bonus (I broke every single darn one of those ... artifacts, just to be sure).

What stays is the sweet taste of a very good level where everything fits and all criticism is nit-picking. Story, platforming, puzzles, visual and audio design was nothing short of amazing. This is a clear 5 star level and a must-play.

If you add those little hints in the beginning I would be without further complaints and that is rare.

Congratz, this is the only good level on Cool Levels page 1

Yeah... anyone who says the Cool Levels system isn't broken needs to go out right now and look around. I played about a dozen levels from page 1 last night, and this was the only level that wasn't crap. No middle ground either - crap or gold.

Oh well...

Just checked it out last night and played it through a few times today. Great Level!!!! I found all the secret spots except 1. I don't have anything to suggest but I did notice a few things. You can get on top of the waterfall and bypass the fire wheels but there isn't anything up there - it was a little confusing since everywhere else you can get has a definite reason you can get there. Also on the right hand side if you don't go to the scoreboard - I can't say what's there without wrecking the surprise - but you know where I mean. There's a chunk of dark matter hanging in the sky. Also is going over the wall and being trapped intentional? If it is - it's funny! If not - it can happen.

BTW, I played with my 13 year old online friend and sure enough - he couldn't get enough of the right hand side of the scoreboard area. *sigh*

EDIT: found a lever that isn't glued down after you fall and before the race starts.

Great Level 5 stars & a heart from me.
