Top Five Games...... EVER!

Archive: 12 posts

Sorry if this has been posted before, I did have a look around but couldn't find it
Anyways, just wondering what your top five games ever would be. I was asked on the spot to come up with 5 and found it really difficult. But after a lot of though I have come up with mine;

Donkey Kong 64
"Collectables are nothing, I can get them all in one sitting", not in this game! The most collectables ever are in this game, and the graphics rival some of the modern Wii games! With tonnes of areas to explore, it's no wonder I love this game

LittleBigPlanet
Not top of my list but lets face it - this is an amazing game! Customization of the sackboy not enough? How about customizing your own levels? That is what makes LBP what it is! Story mode is a little short and some user-levels are just embarrassing, but it doesn't stop it being a classic.

Mario Kart Wii
Best Online, family game ever! Anyone can instantly pick up the wii wheel and fight it out with the pros. The graphics and new tracks make this game complete.

Goldeneye 007 (N64)
Best multiplayer shoot 'em up I have ever played. Still hasn't aged! Also has the best cheat mode ever (invisible bond? I LOVE sneaking up to guards and aiming a knife at their crotch!)

Pok?mon Crystal
Yeah I know, Pok?mon - argh you losa! Say what you want, this game rocks! Ages to complete and then takes even longer to "catch 'em all". It's a real classic, made even more special by it being the first real game I ever played

And now over to you!

#1 Final Fantasy VII. First RPG I can remember with 3D graphics. I blew $300 on a Voodoo? card just to play this on PC. Best storyline I've ever experienced in a game, fantastic special effects (for its time), and mindblowing amount of gameplay when you add in sidequests.

#2 Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past. This game motivated me to sell my Sega Genesis and buy a SNES instead. Light world, dark world, music, crystals, it's unbelievably awesome. I've never really wanted to play another Zelda game after this.

#3 Metal Gear Solid. Kojima changed the face of gaming with MGS series. I put MGS1 here simply because it started it all. I don't know if any other series has inspired so much nostalgia to follow in its wake. One needs to see no more than the words "Metal Gear!?" to have a feeling of warmth rush over them.

#4 God of War. I don't really know why, other than that it seemed to spawn a new genre of game based on gameplay that dates back to double-dragon and battletoads type games. I think it was the insane amount of polish put on the game, combined with great character and monster design, great moves, and excellent control.

#5 GTA: San Andreas. Take classic GTA gameplay, add in more great music, and make it ten times the size of Vice City and you have the best GTA to date. So many viewed GTA4 as a step backwards for all they failed to include that was in San Andreas. Rural areas, Boeing 747s, Mount Chiliad downhill trials, car mod shops - it has it all. My only disappointment with this game was that it lacked V-Rock Radio from Vice city. God, I love metal - at least they still had Ozzy.

#1 Rome: Total War - Amazing mix of strategic empire management and action packed battles.

#2 LittleBigPlanet - Create mode. I love it.

#3 God Of War - I'm a big fan of Greek mythology.

#4 The Worms Series - Addictive, endless fun.

#5 Flower - So different. An amazing experience.

1. Elder Scrolls Oblivion: Just such a huge awesome game. So much to do, great graphics; it really sucks you into the atmosphere.

2. Fallout : The start of an awesome franchise, I like Fallout 2 the best. But these games were huge and had a lot to do and let you create your own destiny as much as games do at least. And it has a really cool / unique story line / theme.

3. Knights Of The Old Republic : I love Star Wars. This series rocks. It's a great Star Wars RPG that allows you to again, make your own destiny / choices and has a great combat system and story line.

4. Grand Thef Auto: San Andreas I loved this game. I thought it was a great turn for the GTA series. The RPG elements were awesome. Also being able to buy your own houses etc. It was just a really cool twist to your standard GTA.

5. World Of Warcraft: Although it's a MMO. I believe it's the best one out there. The raid fights require cordination for a group of people to be able to defeat the bosses. One of the most challenging games for that aspect. Although it can suck the life out of it. I've quit it and returned like 3 or so times.

[Edit]: Lol I just saw thegide picked GTA San An too! Also what he said I left a lot of stuff out. It was just an awesome game over all.

OK I've been thinking about the top spot lately and having trouble deciding between Oblivion and MGS3. But since I enjoy Oblivion, no matter how much I play it and MGS3 would get boring if I played it for the same amount of time (100s of hours), the top spot goes to Oblivion. Also I've only allowed myself 1 game from each series.

1. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - I never really get sick of it and whenever I take a break, there's always something new to do when I come back. Can surprise you endlessly and some items can completely change the way you play the game (I'm looking at you Azura's Star ) 270 hours and still haven't finished the main quest or even started Shivering Isles. I hope I'll love Elder Scrolls 5 as much.

2. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence - My favourite story in a game and my favorite character ever, the Boss. Amazing boss battles, excellent gameplay, fantastic story, memorable characters, great sound design and great graphics. The full package.

3. God of War - Greek mythology, excellent visceral gameplay, Kratos' story is fascinating, some great boss battles and graphics are amazing.

Gotta go will add the others later...

Interesting. We did exactly that at work in order to compile the company's top 100 in reaction to that Edge top 100....

It's so hard to chose my 5 best games ever though. I will need to not consider nostalgia and make a top 5 of my best games ever but not related to the time they were released.

1- Super Metroid

Still the most satisfying one player experience i've ever had. For some reason I like everything in this game and it was never beaten. General atmosphere, sense of exploration, perfect amount of shooting, beautiful 2D, super soundtrack, intricate and detailed level design. This stinks "masterpiece" from every orifice. *bows* *bows*

2- Super Mario Bros 3

Yeah i'm a son of Mario Bros. I was completely flabergasted at Super Mario Bros back in the day and it made me a platforming lover. SMB3 is still the best Mario game to date in my humble opinion. Everything feels just right and I always have my yearly runthrough of the whole game. Amazing.

3- Zelda: A Link To The Past

Perfection in matter of Zelda and adventure games. It was so interesting, so fresh and yet improving so much on the original formula. The world the game is in still is my favorite hyrule. It felt large, it was diverse and the level design is top notch. Countless hours of fun.

4- RollerCoaster Tycoon 2

Fav PC game of all time. When I start playing this, i can't see time passing anymore. There's so much to do, so many details. So awesome to learn mastering everything. It so complex, strategical and yet it never becomes complicated. This games satisfies both my analytic mind and my creative sense. True masterpiece of the genre.

5- Super Mario Galaxy

Best 3D Mario hands down. Just a hair before LittleBigPlanet in my preference. The game is a blast, it's beautiful, it's super amazingly well designed. Masterpiece here again and holy crap at the soundtrack!!

Ever? This is hard to say, because everyone's favorite game fluctuates waaay too much.

So I guess right now it would be:

1. LittleBigPlanet: Such a fantastic creative outlet.
2. MGS4 (w/ MGO): Only game I've beaten 9 times and enjoyed multiplayer so much.
3. Portal: Only game I've beaten 17 times. Literally.
4. LoZ: Ocarina of Time: Don't really need to explain this one. So much to do, and I TRAVELIN TRHOUGH TEH TIMES!
5. Skate 2: Really do like the game. Especially the awesome spots like Fun Track.
