Directional Motor Bolts

Archive: 8 posts

Hey guys,

Well I have melted my brain on what I think is an easy to accomplish event...and I do have it working (sort of) but I am hoping there is an easier way to do it.

I have a platform on wheels with motor bolts; I want to be able to control the direction the platform moves...ie left, right, and stop.

Right now I have the wheels connected to a 3 way switch (set to directional) (with winches attached to either side of the switch set on directional) I have mag switches at each end of the platform (Blue on the right, green on the left, both set to directional)

Right Now; If NO mag key is present (of either color) the platform moves left...if it runs into the proximity of a green key it begins to move right. If Both mag switches have their corresponding color keys near them it doesn't move at all.

Ok this works but it's not ideal.

In order to get it to move right I have to place green mag keys along the path...but if I want it to move back left on the same path, I have to dissolve those green mag keys.

I would rather trigger the movement change with a mag key (once) instead of placing alot of mag keys along the path and then having to dissolve those to reverse the direction, this also adds challenge to stopping and starting at certain times.

I am sure it has something to do with my 3 way switch settings...but when I tried to play around with them I was never able to achieve what I wanted.

I know I could place mag keys on blocks with pistons and move them into range using prox switches...but wouldn't this take up alot more thermo than some other option?

I really do try to achieve my goals with little or no help (feeling of accomplishment!) I have read most of the help files and watched numerous youtube videos but still haven't figured out a simpler way to do this...

Please Help

I hope this all makes sence...please let me know if you need further clarification.

Well, you could just put the 3-way switch on the platform and let the player move it. (Without winches at all) But I'll think about it.

EDIT: Actually, In my level "Tunnel of The Switch Cats" After you take the "emerald" I have an emitter system working. If you play it, notice what happens after the sensor switch moves upwards. I think it's rater useful.

Well your on the bridge of a space ship and you have 2 buttons to push already to activate either Photon Torpedo's or shields...but your not the helm officer so you really shouldn't be in control of the ship...Also I want to control the movement so I can orchestrate a couple space battles to happen at times of my choosing...

Thanks for your help and insight though!

P.S. I will play your lvl tonight (I hope)

I had a similar problem in my "Lost Under Glass" level... The boss section is a huge turning section that, when you complete an action, turns part way. I had to make it turn and stop when I wanted it to, then when the same spot would go by the same section, it would ignore it...

You can have your mag switches set on pistons that pull away when you don't need or want them...

Say for example that when you are moving right you want green switches being the one's up and expected, have an off screen mag set up to trigger the green switches to come within view or your mag keys on your car...

And if you want to move left, have those green keys drop, and blue keys pop up.

If you don't want people to actually control the car via a visible 3-way switch, have your off screen 3-way switch control what happens depending on which direction it is going.

Well that really is the set up I have now (which works) but I'm afraid that this will be thermo heavy. I have alot of things happening in this level and was just trying to conserve space...but if this is the only option (pats self on back for getting it right then I will just have to work around it.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I think the best thing to do for something like this is to separate the control mechanism (Mag Keys and Switches) from the vehicle and path, and package it somewhere out of sight in your level.

You could then control how long it moves right, left or stops more easily by temporarily emitting Mag Keys at specific times and the like, or using pistons to push Mag Keys in range or out of range.

*I think that was the answer my melted brain couldn't wrap around! By doing that I can use mag switches and keys on the 'car' to emit the desired colored key to control the direction (off screen) Brilliant!*

Thank you...sometimes it takes someone outside the box to remind you of the simple things your forgetting!

Ah yes, I did that in my Forest Survival Challenge. Which I deleted by accident. (*Leaves to perform backup*)2009-03-25 19:00:00
