The Platformer ~ Episode I ~ H.E.A.V.E.N. (Pics!)
Archive: 25 posts
After playing LittleBig Contra, I had the urge to make my own, original retro-platformer. I wanted something that you ran through quite quickly, and shot your Paintanator at anything that moves. And so this level was born. The Platformer is about you, 'The User'. You are a super-program created to destroy virus' quickly, and efficiently. You have been uploaded into the Nexus, the biggest computer system in the world. recently, several of its servers had been attacked, and taken over by a Virus. You have to destroy the virus before it takes over anymore servers, as it could take control of major things, as nuclear codes, and a program that could turn this small group of virus' into something much, much bigger. Here's some screenies: http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4638/aphotow.jpg http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5885/aphoto8copy.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9441/aphoto4copy.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/842/aphoto7copy.jpg http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/9098/aphoto6copy.jpg http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6712/aphoto9.jpg http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3976/aphotol.jpg Now this is the training level, you will shoot different objects and virus' but it is no where near as fast paced as the other levels in the series will be. But don't get put off; it's still fun! Every level will have its own theme; a different look. This level is a very bright level, with a blue background. You will be moving across cardboard platforms that have been stickered white. I also used several other stickers to detail it even more. Also, there are places were the Virus has attached itself to, and it looks really cool. (In my opinion.) You'll be able to see it if you play it. I shall be posting pictures tomorrow though. Also, if you have any ideas for themes for future levels in this series please tell me. I would like elemental themes, and techno themes. I already have a water, fire, core, and virus hive theme in mind, but I'll need more. So please, try out this level, and watch out for the secret at the end. (It's near the exit door... let's just say... look up HINT HINT NUDGE NUDGE, and look for the arrow on the wall that points up, as that is were you want to SHOOT you PAINTANATOR at.) Please leave comments and feedback, as I will do the same for you! Thanks! | 2009-03-25 05:25:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
I really liked this level Cog! I thought the visual style was simple, but stylish. I found the concept pretty interesting as well with the virus invading the system. The different boxes with different attributes were also pretty cool, although you don't get to use them that much. I assume that they will all play more of a role in the next installment. Overall, I had a lot of fun with it and thought it looked pretty cool as well. Good job! | 2009-03-25 23:23:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |

I just added some more things to the level, and took 'computerized' out of the description so it won't be all ********'s. | 2009-03-26 00:06:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
Hey Cog, thanks for leaving feedback on the Unhearted: Drakes Misfortune thread. I just had a play of your level, heres my thoughts. + Very clean and stylish look + I like the uses of the different boxes, good idea, it will keep a nice flow to the coming levels. + The agility section was good and well designed. The boxes fell perfectly. + Point boxes everywhere for points, I have a bad habit of putting the paintinator away though (not your fault, mine!) + Liked the virus sections, they are a nice contrast to the white clean level + Nice angel character + Liked the huge virus thing that rises up in the background, nice touch. + Nicely stickered scoreboard - You're speech bubble at the paintinator is moderated. - You need a paintinator outside of the checkpoint after the angel character where you meet the virus soldier. I did'nt have mine, and could'nt get passed the soldier. I died but respawned right next to it, still with no paintinator, I had to restart the level. - Got stuck under the virus thing that falls when you shoot the explosives, no biggy, but I had to pop sackboy to get out thus spoiling my chances of acing the level Its a good level this that brings you into the series nicely. Explaining the boxes uses and introducing the enemies will give the rest of the levels a nice flow. Good job **** | 2009-03-26 12:07:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |

Ok, I fixed the things that you told me Gruntos. I can't believe that Launching is a censored word! I had to change it to flinging, but it makes the Paintanator have a cooler name, so instead of The Apled, (Appled ) it's the Apfed! (Ah - P - Fd) I also added a paintanator to the place you asked for it. | 2009-03-27 03:13:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
hi cog just finished playing it. its really good and got me waiting for the next one already. one thing i think you could fix where i fell to the ground and saw some extra parts laying down there. it was at the target practice, on my second play through i didnt bother shooting all the targets(just enough to get through) anyway the target in the background lowest nearest the stairs, is to close to the targets resting on the stairs. i shoot a few targets and was making my way up the stairs (while leaving some targets there so easier to get to the points above) jumped got sucked back to that lowere backgrund target and slide off the backside. since it was so close to the targets resting on the stairs i didnt get pulled back to the foreground and ended up on the floor with thejunk parts laying around. think just movng it over or up slightly should fix it. otherwise i really enjoyed the level, like riding the virus up to the top section as well | 2009-03-27 03:51:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
Hi Cog, I Played your level yesterday and really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more in the series. I won't list everything I was going to because the other guys have already said the same. No point in repeating it all. I too loved the clean design apart from the noughts and crosses ( tic-tac toe ) stickers everywhere. I thought they detracted from the look and made it seem more like a kid's playground than a super computer but maybe that's just my perception. Not a big deal anyway. The only thing different I found was at the top of the first set of stairs. Where the speech bubble says something about shooting that points box there wasn't actually a box there at all. Maybe I missed doing something that triggers it. I don't know. At least I couldn't see one. But that's the only problem I found. Great fun level anyway | 2009-03-28 13:01:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |

Great fun level anyway There are so many tic-tac-toe boxes that I couldn't really change them, it would take forever. Also, the box that wasn't there is sometimes accidentaly shot when shooting the other targets, I think I'll add some invisible matter there to stop that. Just played through your level, and I have to say it is a very nice, clean level which is pretty fun to play Pros: +Visuals are spot on, beautiful to look at +Really captures the retro feel you were going for +Scoreboard is awesome! +Virus sections, by far my favourite part and an interesting contrast which makes this level stand out Cons: -Perhaps a few too many points available, I too seemed to put away the paintinator too early..... but that is just me -As you said, a little slow moving at times but overall the pace was pretty good. Very good level 4 stars + Brilliant -------------------------------------------- If you've got a spare few minuted on LBP could you please check out my level and leave feedback (thread in sig) Level Name:Coastin' in the Jungle PSN: Coxy224 | 2009-04-01 19:38:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I really liked your level. Here's a list of the pros and cons. Pros: - Simple yet amazing visuals - The different types of boxes was a great idea - Interesting storyline - Great feel to the level - Nice enemies Cons: - Quite short (but that's forgivable as it's a training level) - The gameplay's kinda slow (but I'm sure you'll make the next installments more fast-paced) Overall I thought your level was awesome. 5 stars and a heart! Looking forward for your next installments! | 2009-04-02 17:46:00 Author: lk9988 Posts: 1077 |
Your level was okay. I at least want to see the next level in the supposed series done, to see where this is going. - The level was reeaaly easy. I know it is supposed to be an introduction level, but I don't really believe that an action-platformer level like this needs an introduction. Bring on the action instead! - I liked the idea of only getting points by shooting hidden point boxes. Only problem was, that the point boxes were not really hidden. In your further levels in the series, make sure most of the point boxes are hidden, or requires some timing/platforming effort reaching. - At the beginning, I attempted to get the first sticker hidden in the air. But in my attempt to reach it, I fell down, and fall through your level, onto the level-frame ground. Not pretty, and had to bring up the popit and respawn. Please check out my level "Save Die Reload!", user: "CarlsenJeppe", and give me some comments. Just played this and had a very good time. As others have said, it was a bit short and lacked any real challenge, but as an intro, we'll forgive this. I trust we will get more action and danger in the coming installments? As for game play, I had no real problems. I too really appreciated the look of the level. If it had been described to me I think I would have been unimpressed (mostly white cubes glued and strung together with the occasional bit of VR blue as the virus). But I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. It really was very pleasing aesthetically; clean and crisp. All in all, a very well made level, and a good fun bit of gaming! 5 stars and a heart from me. I cannot wait until part II. | 2009-04-03 04:22:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
I have linux so I can't get viruses .=P Looks like a nice level! I'll have to try it out sometime! EDIT: I've tried it out and here's my feedback: It was a nice level, a great introduction to a series of levels, and was full of eyecandy. It was a very creative level, and I enjoyed playing it. But then, right when I least suspected it, It... ended. It was pretty short, and needs some work. Overall, 3/5 stars because it isn't finished yet. | 2009-04-03 04:35:00 Author: tjb0607 Posts: 1054 |
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I shall be getting to your Feedback soon, probably tomorrow. I shall also be starting the next level this weekend. It's definitely going to be faster paced. It's based in a dark 'server' that's really weird. This one will include a boss, that will really look cool, as it will kind of 'glow' in the darkness. | 2009-04-04 04:17:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
Awesome level, Part 2 is now my most anticipated level in LBP! + Extremely awesome art style. The level has a good theme, and it is simplistic, but not boring. The blue virus parts are a nice contrast + Interesting creatures + Fun use of the paintinator + The fact that the series has it's own mechanics is promising. It's like a whole game! The boom box, etc. are really neat and really add to the gameplay + Funny and fun. I especially like that the helper box has a face drawn on it + Fun platforming - A little short and easy. This is not that big of a complaint, though, because I am sure Part 2 will remedy both of these points. - The Sackboy with wings seems a little out of place to me. This is just my opinion. Don't let this make you take him out, though, from the sounds of it, he will return. F4F: Frost (in sig) | 2009-04-10 02:08:00 Author: cornontheCOD Posts: 150 |
Ok Cog i actually played this level on Sunday, never got around to writing the review so...here it is: Pros: + Cool atmosphere, its empty although thats the point because its like a simulator effect. Nice work + Unique Gameplay, with the different boxes and hints and stuff, although "Im not a Rebel" XD Cons: -I didnt really see much of anything that concerned me, it was fairly simple, but that doesnt seem to be a problem -The first bomb box, when it blows up it looks like it could cause problems...i didnt have any problems with it, but if someone pushed it then shot it you could have a problem, it might prevent you from escaping the little ditch that it is in. I dont know, i just couldnt think of anything serious, but i felt like it needed some criticism XD | 2009-04-22 22:38:00 Author: King_Tubb Posts: 435 |
Thank you Tubb, I was thinking the same thing a while ago. Also, I have been on and off Part two for a while, working on the boss and enemies, but I will really work on it now, with the Create pack coming! | 2009-04-22 23:44:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
