He's a leopard gecko. Don't know how old he is, as he was an adoptee.

Anyone else got any reptiles? Pictures? They're fascinating!

Wow, great color markings!

I'm not sure if our guy will stay with us permanently, or if he's only here for a prolonged visit, but if we do have to give him back, I think I'm sold on getting another lizard of some kind.

He was out of his cage for a while the other day, but we have to keep a close eye on the cats... they want to um..."play" with him I think.

Thanks! I thought they were the prettiest of the bunch when I ordered them. I got mine online from a breeder, I highly suggest that if you get another one that you do the same. Health wise (and choice wise) you get a better deal buying from a breeder.

Sometimes petstore ones can be unhealthy, and sometimes even have parasites (because they don't keep their tanks clean enough). They can also have personality/temperment issues (from people annoying them on a daily basis).

And yea, I'd be careful about the cats lol .. I'm sure they'd like a tasty geico inspired snack lol.

I'm pretty sure this guy came from the petstore originally. Compared to yours, you can see he didn't have the same selective breeding since his colors aren't nearly as striking. (or perhaps its a gender difference? I don't even know what sex this "guy" is... though I'm inclined to say male)

I read somewhere that these type of geckos can live 20-30 years. That's incredible, if true.

He's got a good temperment anyways, so I think. He doesn't mind being held, and he happily crawls all over us. But, in his cage he hides mostly and comes out a bit in the evening. He certainly doesn't spend all day basking under his heat lamp.

His previous owner didn't give him a damp hideout at all (I don't think he knew). When we put in some damp moss, he buried it under sand or threw it out the front door of his hideout. I don't think he likes it.

I think this weekend we're going to convert his terrarium to reptile carpet from sand. Don't want him getting impacted, and I think it's been rough on him removing him from his cage for feeding.

actually, leopard geckos don't need a heat lamp .. as they don't bask .. they are night time dwellers. They generally stay in caves/crevices during the day and mostly are active at night.

They need a warm and cold side of the tank, so they actually need a heating pad under the tank (instead of a basking lamp), so that they can lay on it to digest their food properly (hence the hot/cold side).

You may also want to invest in a cuttlebone, scrape it, and leave the white powder in a small container inside the tank for the gecko to eat at his leasure (that's what I do for mine, suprisingly enough they know when to go and get some .. I have to replace it often) .. otherwise they can get MBD (metabolic Bones Disease) from a lack of calcium.
http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/reptilesgeneral/a/metabolicbd.htm

As for the moist hideout, papertowels work great, but they need to be on the warm side of the tank, esle .. who really wants to lay in cold wet stuff, yanno lol. They need that to shed properly, or it can cause them great problems (like toe loss).

Getting rid of the sand is actually a fab idea. I just use plain, white papertowels. They are more sanitary imo, as you can definately see when they need changing.

Oh, and the coloring isn't because yours isnt as good a quality .. it's because they are different types of leopard gecko. there are so many different strains it isn't even funny lol. There are many different varieties/colors to choose from .. and some of them are mega expensive .. like $1,000 expensive lol. Mine only cost $20 ea. haha

Yours low color could also mean he's about to shed, they get kinda dull looking when that's about to happen (since the top layer of skin is about to come off and is in sorts, dying lol).

That's some fabulous info right there, thanks.

"Nibs" as his former owner called him, currently has his tank set up as follows (following recommendations from a leopard gecko owner that works at big box petstore):

Left side of the tank has a dwelling with a heat pad under the tank. This is the dwelling we tried to put wet moss in. On top of this dwelling, it's cool. The other side of the tank has a 50W heat lamp and another, larger hideout.

Funny it was the same clerk who told us to get the lamp in the first place, since when we got nibs, he only had the heating pad, and the terrarium had an air temp of about 72'F/21'C everywhere. With the lamp, it's about 25-26'C on that side of the tank.

His cricket food is shake 'n baked with calcium powder before we feed him, so he shouldn't need the bone.

Your welcome. I joined a gecko forum a while back (actually, I haven't been there in a while, I should go lol) and learned a lot of valuable information.

A lot of people think they need a heat lamp, since most reptiles do .. you really have to read about them to know they are night dwellers and dont ever really utilize the lamp.

I have some moss in a plastic container with a hole cut in the lid (I pour water in there everyday to make sure it stays nice and limp/wet). Mine go in there when they want to. I also have several other places for them to hide as well, so they don't have to go in the moss if they don't want to.

From what I've read, leopard geckos aren't the best climbers, so really to get cool they shouldn't have to. From what I've read, they seem to fall alot, which can hurt them.

My air temp is 76 and it's very humid. I have as many openings blocked as I can, and I keep the inside misted. They seem to love the condensation, mine usually lick it off all around where they can reach lol. I also have the light diffused, they will come out more during the day if the light isn't so bright.

the tank is in my sons room, but I'll snap a pic for you tomorrow .

Well we did a big overhaul of his 15gal vivarium today. Got rid of the sand and put some nice green reptile carpet down. Also bought him a faux leafy plant to give him a new type of decor. I know leos come from the desert, but this is something new to him and fun as he can crawl through and hide in it.

I found some desert scene background paper at the petstore and bought some of this as well. After taping it to the backside of the tank, he was immediately fascinated by it. It's got photorealistic rock and cacti... and the poor guy kept trying to climb it. I sort of feel bad... like I'm teasing him with it.

I like the fact that the reptile carpet gets him that much closer to the undertank heat mat. I don't think much heat was being transferred through the 2" of sand that was in the tank previously.

We still need to build him a humid hide this weekend. Will probably make it from a tupperware as most people suggest, although I'd really like to preserve the natural looking enclosure he now has. With the plant, molded rock hides, driftwood, and stones, his cage looks very natural. With the sand gone, we can feed him in his cage once again.

He looks really happy with the new setup. He's been exploring extensively and is constantly out of his hides this evening. I'll take pictures and post them soon.

But can they do the robot?

A friend once had a pair of geckos just like those. They didn't do much of anything though.

I'll be honest, I had that green carpet .. and I absolutely hated it. It's very pretty and makes the geckos really stand out and look nice, but it smells wretched after about a week, and you CANNOT get the smell out. I even washed it in clorox (the directions say to just wash it and put it back in) and it still smelled like death lol.

I just use white papertowels, double layered (like I pull a long sheet off and just fold it over to fit the bottom of the tank. then I mist it a little so that it conforms to the bottom of the tank, and let it dry. Perfect tank bottom. cheap and sanitary lol). The double layer puts enough distance between the geckos and the glass, so they don't get burned. I also have a thermometer laying on the bottom (as well as one on the glass to monitor inside air temp) so I can moniter the surface temp.

Sorry it took so long, here is some pictures of ours .. sorry about the mess .. but the tank IS in a 12 yr old boy's room LOL.

You can see the 3 hides, one is made of sponge (which I try to keep moist 90% of the time by pouring water on it and letting it soak in .. that way they have 2 moist hides to share), one is hard and stays cool inside .. they use both a lot, and the other is just a plastic box lol.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h203/Sexxieracerchik4/Miscellaneous/Geckos/P1190196.jpg
This is the spongey hide .. the smaller one doesn't like this one as much as the big one lol.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h203/Sexxieracerchik4/Miscellaneous/Geckos/P1190197.jpg
This is the other moist hide, it has moss in it, and I keep water poured in it daily so it stays saturated and squishy. They get in here a lot. You can also see the bowl of cuttlebone scrapings lol.

Most reptiles don't do much of anything .. they aren't like having dogs & cats as pets lol. No tricks, no begging, and they don't normally follow you around. they are for looking at and scaring people with lol. (jk, ok not really haha, yes I'm kidding!)

I'm envious... There are heavy restrictions on exotic animal import where I live and that nearly covers all reptiles.
I know a dude who breeds smuggled reptiles and at one point I was close to buying a cute leopard, but financial crisis put a halt to that plan :/

I wish I had pictures of my pet snake on this computer. The only pictures of him I had were on my old computer and it broke right after she passed away. ;-;2009-04-06 07:18:00

Well so far the carpet has been a huge success. I was a bit worried when he didn't poop for about 4 days after we moved him off sand (this would have been a very unfortunate time for him to suddenly become impacted).

Gave him a warm bath and a bit of oil on his lips, and he was regular a few hours later. No problems since.

He's really enjoying the new setup I think. I grabbed some slate from the river to add to his tank, and added the moist hide. He's out all the time these days, and is always poking his head out whenever we walk by his tank.

He's also got a relationship going on with our youngest cat, who has been lazily lying down on the dining room table to watch him... and he stares right back. Not the kind of predator-prey relationship as when he's out of his cage running around, but just one of keen interest of each other.

If yours is anything like mine, you'll find they poop in the same spot over and over .. usually in a corner somewhere lol.2009-04-09 02:00:00

Yes, apparently that is in their nature. Mine likes to go on a few smooth stones that are in the back right corner of the cage.

In other news, I'm taking the wife to the reptile zoo this weekend. Should be lots of fun. I've only been there once before, but I'll probably leave with a bunch of ideas what I want to do next. I'm thinking a water dragon once I move into a new place.

I used to have corn snakes. 2 of them. Adults. Male & Female. Yeah, have a guess what happened every 6 bloody months.

On a side note... i just watched my hamster die I've had him for just under 2 years now. So it was of old age. It's 3am here. I heard rustling... then weezing... then looked over at the poor fellow and he was taking his last few breaths I loved him
