Cool Levels is a rip-off!

Archive: 13 posts

Hey! Anyone have any suggestions or advice? I believed that I had done everything suggested to get your level noticed on the Cool Levels pages. But moments after I published, it was on page 7; 10 minutes later on page 18; and this morning it is gone altogether. I was under the impression that I had 7 days, not 6 hours.

It has 80 plays and 7 hearts and a 4 star rating. It's a very good level in my opinion and that of several others. But these results are disheartening.

I know this issue has been discussed many times (and I should probably put this into the correct thread), but I was just wondered if anyone had any new insights on how to get noticed out there?

Thanks!

Keep publishing it and getting people to play it. Just because it goes on cool pages doesn't mean it's "cemented" there - it becomes cemented when it receives a certain number of plays/hearts/star rating (it is some formula combination of the 3 that causes it to become cemented). You can tell if it's cemented if it doesn't have that new published "glow" around it.

From that point on, it will stay on and rise up through the ranks based on plays/hearts/star ratings it achieves.

I actually did this accidentally with Splat Invaders II last week - I was posting at night trying to avoid the kiddies when it suddently became cemented and went all the way to page 2.

Oh... one more note - even if it's cemented, if you republish it will appear in a "glow" on a higher page temporarily - allowing it to get additional plays on a better cool page.

(however, in order for the republish to do this you must change a small thing in your level).

It sounds to me theres a possibility that others just didnt think as highly of your level as you did. I only say that because your level has a heart to play ratio of just over 1:10, which compared to other levels in the top 5 pages that have less than 100 plays is quite low.
I dont know how/if the star rating has anything to do with what page your levels appear on, but i have seen a pattern when it comes to heart/play ratios.

If i were you, i would republish it as a new level and see how it does again.

In my opinion it should be the star rating that gets it to cool pages not hearts, because it might be a really good level but people will either forget to heart or won't want to heart any more levels for some reason.2009-03-24 21:37:00

Like CCubbage said, it's a combo of all three criteria PLUS it's weighed against the current list of levels "cemented" in the cool pages. The best way to guage it is to look at the levels stuck between page 6 and 12. The higher your star rating, the faster it will stick and climb towards page one. Qugz's MO2 had a 5 star rating + it started accumulating plays and hearts very rapidly. Hence it landed on page one, very shortly after it was published. (Gratz, great level). I don't think that hearts vs. plays has much or anything to do with sticking to the cool pages as I've seen levels with less than 10% ratio stick just the same. It should go without saying however that levels with higher star ratings are probably going to have higher heart ratios, because lets face it, people like to heart "good levels".2009-03-24 22:43:00

I heard it's a ratio of 1h to 10p and at least 300 plays in the first 48 hours of publishing. It seemed to work for me, my level stuck on page 9 hitting this ratio and has risen ever since (page 4 this morning when I last checked).2009-03-24 22:51:00

ya and even if its bad people will realize this and give it a low star rating and the good levels will rise to the top

I hate to say this, because it makes me sound obsessive compulsive, but I watched the process VERY closely for about a week. It is definately some kind of algorithm between rating, # of plays, an hearts. I don't know exactly what the formula is, but I KNOW that a poorly rated level with very few hearts and a LOT of plays has the same chance climbing as a level with a lot less plays, but a decent amount of hearts and a good rating.

(but, as Jaeyden said - has nothing, as far as I can tell, to do with heart/play ratio. But more hearts helps)

Thegide and I experimented extensively (AND I might add successfully) with the whole thing and became pretty good at it. Thegide last week had ALL 3 of his levels pretty high on cool levels at the same time. It was pretty neat having Astroid Pinball on page 1, and at the same time watching his Idol and Shadow Moses Site B AND Splat II shooting up pretty quick.

Best thing you can do - have it on this site so people are playing it and giving you feedback - take the feedback, make improvements, and keep publishing to get more people to play it. If people here say there are frustrating parts try to take care of it as early as possible and get it back up there.

If it's a decent level, you WILL succeed. There's a lot of crap out there on cool levels, and a decent level right now has a really good shot at getting there.

Biggest mistake you can make is sitting on it. I wouldn't even officially publish until you're going to have the time to make improvements and republish enough to get the count up.

By the way, check out my "Good publishing practices" thread. If your level has any challenge at all, some of the information I've posted can help you a lot.

Wait, so let's say your level runs it's 7 day cycle on Cool Levels. Can you go into create, change stuff around, republish it, ...will it be eligible to get back on Cool Levels?2009-03-25 05:10:00

It will "be" on cool levels again briefly so you can get some plays out of it, however it can't get "cemented" on cool levels again.
