The Hunt for LittleBigOctober - Spotlighted!

Archive: 30 posts

PSN: tsr13

You are Sack Ryan, an S.I.A. agent searching for a secret submarine that has disappeared. You'll need both brains and reflexes on this hunt. Are you up for the challenge?

This is another one of my movie-themed levels, this time based on the Tom Clancy classic novel and 1990 film, The Hunt for Red October (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099810/). It follows the storyline of both the film and the book, but players need not be familiar with the story to understand and/or enjoy this level.

The Hunt for LittleBigOctober contains no platforming of any kind; it is a vehicle-based level with a heavy emphasis on puzzles and a pinch of paintinator thrown in for good measure. It takes place largely in an underwater environment, onboard various submarines. This is my second level and seems to be the most popular at the present time.

As of March 23, 2009 this level has 474 plays, 85 hearts, and a 4-star rating.

ive played this level before and im just gonna say that i recommend this to everybody, it has some puzzles and you get to pilot your own cute lil submarine and avoid some mines underwater... that was really cool for me.

this level earned 4 stars and heart from me so go play it!

Looks better than your Tron level, will have to check it out!!

btw, judging from the screens it seems you use the default LBP stickers for text. These are not very pretty. Instead, I'd reccomend searching: @lite_sleeper
He has a level called "font cache" which has some really high quality fonts, which will make your levels that much more professional!

Thanks goose! (...or should I say gray?) The kind words especially mean a lot coming from you - you're one of the better creators out there for sure and know what it takes to make a level tick. For anybody reading this.... Go play Metal Gear Karas right now!

Much obliged for the play.

You are spot-on with regards to the font. I don't particularly like the way the game-provided font looks in this level, but my thermo is so unbelievably full that unfortunately there is no way I could add a custom font. I think I have room for maybe three stickers...

Going forward I am definitely going to use some different text options. In fact, I have a project in the works right now that could use something from lite_sleeper. I think I need to go check it out.

I told you I couldn't finish it lol.

I liked the submarine, although it would be cool if it were easier to steer. It reminded me of Crash Bandicoot lol!

EDIT: the floaty material it is made out of is great, as it makes it seem like you ARE underwater. If you want, TJapan has a level full of cowed materials he got by uninstalling his gamedata. If you feel like it, you could see it, as it might make your submarine appear sharper.

Yes, but you get bonus points for trying.

Yeah, it takes a little getting used to, but my main concern was to make it reliable. Flying objects are a tricky thing to do in LBP - even the balloon platform in the Islands story level was a bit on the weird side to pilot around.

After spending probably 50 hours alone testing and rebuilding that minisub, I got so used to it that I ended up making the minefield section brutally difficult without even realizing it was that hard. Let's just say that my first few playtesters weren't thrilled with it. LOL It's fortunately in a much happier place now.

Well, it was functional at least. What you could try is:

Geveruh22: Mobilesuit armorboy This is training!

It involves flying a mech, and basically, you are flying with a jetpack, and stuck inside the mech. The jetpack means you are dragging the mech. I liked these controls better, as you could steer it easily. I think you could add something similair to it, or test something like it.

PS. sorry for giving you like 12352346237624358970784236207 levels to try lol!

Excellent level. I came across this totally by chance when it was first released and loved it. There are some excellent puzzles and vehicle sections, and no platforming sections.

Its well crafted, looks and plays great. Highly recommended.

This is a great level, but Hardsync and I broke this so badly the one night... lol. We were too heavy for the sub and we sank like a rock! (we have a knack for breaking levels) I saw Vmethos play through the whole thing though, and it really is great.2009-03-24 12:28:00

LOL! Yes, that would be a problem, wouldn't it... I really should add "recommended for 1 player" to the description. Regardless, in a strange way I always like hearing when people are able to break and/or escape from my levels. It's amazing what other players can find sometimes.

Yay, another fan of the 80's! ...well and I guess 1990 too. There are so many good movies and video games from that era. My current been-forever-in-the-works project level is based off of yet another 80's movie. I am reluctant to say which for fear of ruining the surprise, but I might have to set it up as a locked playtest level so that I can get some early feedback on it.

If it involves horses whinnying on cue I'm going to start thinking we are sharing a brain. lol (I had an idea for another 80's movie last night but I don't know if I can pull it off - would be really funny though)2009-03-24 17:56:00

rofl!

That's actually not a bad idea...... I haven't seen that movie in ages. (Now I gotta come up with a Frau Bl?cher costume, just for fun.)

No, my project level isn't on Young Frankenstein, it's on a sci-fi flick from about 10 years later. I wanted to do something with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels but never could come up with much that would make the level interesting. I have a pretty good idea for a "Ruprecht the monkey boy" sequence where you'd have to bang pots to accomplish something, like opening your cell door. LOL

Just a little note on the text - you can actually do a custom font pretty well without using up more thermo than you have.

Go into an empty level and draw your lettering big using material (such as rubber). Place it on some white material and take a picture of it. Then, you can just use the single sticker for a whole word.

(I'm going to play this tonight, but I was looking at the screen shots of your level and I agree that with some custom lettering it could put a really nice wrapper on it)

Good point - I guess I never really thought of doing it that way. *smacks forehead* I'll have to work on updating this.

I'm not sure how to do the "Sack Intelligence Agency" lettering at the very beginning though, as that is not done on a white background. I could put it in some type of frame I suppose.

Hey Taffey. I just played your level, and it was okay.

The vehicle sections were good. The helicopter ride was fun, and I did not have a hard time controlling the sub. I did die once in the sub, and found the savepoint to be a painful long distance back, but it is probably just me being impatient.

The visuals were kinda sparse for a "story level" based on a movie, such as this.

I did not like your puzzles that much. Don't get me wrong, the were very well implemented, but I just generally dislike this type of puzzle. They have too much resemblance of the type of puzzle you find in a magazine, or a jigsaw puzzle, to really appeal to me.

Overall, very well done.

I played the level tonight and really liked it. The plane with the clouds was cute and I liked the helicopter section with the clouds. Took a few electrocutions before I got the hang of it but that's kind of the point isn't it. I thought the blur effect was interesting on the blades. Is that from an emitter or is it from that weird glitch Drunken_Fist_Lee has mentioned?

The sub design is cute too - I laughed when it actually submerged. The puzzles are fun too - but I like puzzles. I especially liked the red and blue glass one. Very unique style that I haven't seen in LBP before. I ran back twice to do all three of them. The second time I got the puzzle right there wasn't a "completed" sound but the door opened (thought I'd mention this in case you meant for one to sound.)

I didn't have any problems navigating the rescue sub and found it reminded me of the balloon section of the Oni's Volcano level from MM. It was fun. I liked too that the mines show up out of nowhere! Hot shot sub pilots beware!

Graphically I thought your helicopter and water effects were the most well done. The rest of the level is cleanly built and nice but didn't really grab my attention for lighting or a specific artistic design. By your own admission that's not what you were going for and I point it out only because it's sort of my thing. To each his own - that's why I love LBP.

Overall I really liked the level and thought it was clever and fun to play. 5 stars and a heart. (I played the Tron one first and this one convinced me to heart you as a creator too.) Thanks for sharing it and I'm looking forward to more levels from you.

I did die once in the sub, and found the savepoint to be a painful long distance back, but it is probably just me being impatient.I feel your pain. The long distance to the save point is a design flaw - I simply did not build in enough thermometer space to have another checkpoint here. One minisub emitter set to four subs takes about 15% of my thermo, and I think if I tried to add another my PS3 would actually catch on fire.

Never seen the movie, so I can't vouch for its authenticity, but I did think the hints provided during the port/starboard puzzle were hilarious, and the rest of the level was very well done. Or, at least, what I saw of it...around the warhead deactivation bit, my wireless connection started going nuts and canceling on me over and over again. It got so frustrating that I had to quit LBP and go fix it. :/

At the very least I'll return to the level at some point to rate it highly, if not finish it! Kudos!

Is that from an emitter or is it from that weird glitch Drunken_Fist_Lee has mentioned?Alright, another play. You're awesome!

I think you might be able to survive through the entire helicopter ride if you don't do anything... My idea there is was to make it more like a survival challenge, where the real task at hand is just to see how long you can keep the multiplier going.

The blur effect on the main blades was a happy accident. An emitter was the best way for me to get the blade motion I wanted, and the blurring just kind of happened without me realizing it would.

The sub design is cute too - I laughed when it actually submerged. The puzzles are fun too - but I like puzzles. I especially liked the red and blue glass one. Very unique style that I haven't seen in LBP before. I ran back twice to do all three of them. The second time I got the puzzle right there wasn't a "completed" sound but the door opened (thought I'd mention this in case you meant for one to sound.)At one point in time I had a serious puzzle graveyard built up. I tried so many different variations for the final puzzle I nearly gave up... but eventually stumbled on the design you see in the finished level. The original puzzle had numbers 0-9 on each glass cylinder and you had to put them in a certain order, but it was so impossibly difficult I couldn't even solve it after an hour. So, I gave that up and ended up wiht the two-color system instead.

Thanks for mentioning the thing with the sound - there is indeed supposed a "completed" noise for both alternate puzzles. I need to look into why that happened, but for some reason I've had trouble with the audio objects in that part of the level - they don't always behave properly. I have a hunch that the abundance of logic gates offscreen are interfering with the game's ability to realize a sound needs to be played.

To each his own - that's why I love LBP.After playing so many high-quality community levels, I admit that LittleBigOctober is a bit on the plain side. I spent most of my attention on the details and not much at all on the background. The underwater caverns section was really my first foray into trying to make a convincing overall environment.

Overall I really liked the level and thought it was clever and fun to play. 5 stars and a heart. (I played the Tron one first and this one convinced me to heart you as a creator too.) Thanks for sharing it and I'm looking forward to more levels from you.Thank you, thank you! I do have a third level I've published - Galaxy Hill. I gave up on wireless gaming a couple years ago for similar problems. I just coughed up the money for a 50' ethernet cable... and of course the wife made me climb around the crawl space so that the cable wouldn't be running through the house.

Just got done playing this - loved loved loved loved it. You had NUMEROUS innovations in here. I totally had a good time.

The part where you get on the airplane and walk through with the illusion of flying, and then walk off the other side - that was a GREAT idea. The helicopter flight added a really nice gameplay element, and the submarine ride was a great idea.

You really put some thought into the puzzle areas, also. Whenever someone hits me with puzzle solving I immediately get a little nervous twinge of irritation on the back of my neck - I just want to have fun, not solve puzzles. But, I gave them a chance and ended up really enjoying them.

The only quibble I have about the level that just didn't fit was the "Agency" lettering. This could stand to be a white board with some nice looking letters on it to make it look official.

Great job - 5 star and hearted!

If you get a chance, you could check out my "Splat Invaders Saga" level (and even move into "Splat Invaders II: The Caverns of Splat" if you like it....)

Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. The more I think about the lettering throughout the level, the more I realize it needs to be redone. That is my next order of business for sure. Regardless, I'm glad you had a good time! As long as you had fun with the level, then I have accomplished my goal.

I will definitely go check out your Splat Invaders series. I owe CarlsenJeppe some playtime on "Save Die Reload!", so it looks like I'll need to fire up LBP during my lunch hour. Oh darn.
