Valkyria Chronicles

Archive: 9 posts

Seeings as a few people have mentioned this game, and some people have said that they have loved it, I thought I might start a thread about this game.

For those that don't know, Valkyria Chronicles is a turn based strategy game with RPG elements based around a fantastical retelling of elements of WWII. That would be summing the game up in one sentence, but the game as a whole is a lot more than that.

It features some incredible music, story telling, voice acting, and strategic depth. It's kind of similar to the Fire Emblem series, if people are familiar with that one, but it's harder for units to be completely killed (though it's still possible) and it's more of a ranged based combat system.

The "turns" give you a set number of command points, which allow you to take control of one of your units and move it within a set distance, and also use it to line up one specific shot. This allows you to sometimes get in close and go for a direct head shot on a unit, killing them a lot faster than if you just waited for default firing.

Each of the unit types have different strengths and weaknesses. Tanks are powerful, but can be taken down by Lancers, foot infantry with anti-tank weapons. Snipers can kill almost any foot soldier at range, but are weak if anyone gets close enough to fight back or they get flanked. Scouts move fast and counter fire well, but can't take many hits. Shock troopers are well balanced, but have a relatively short firing range. Just don't go charging straight towards them. Finally, Engineers are not all that powerful as attack units, but their many secondary abilities, like repairing damaged tanks and defusing enemy mines to repairing broken structures, make them handy in certain situations.

Units can also counter fire if an enemy unit is in range and the unit is aware of it and has counter firing abilities. This allows you to set up defensive lines and try and out flank the opponent. Grenades and healing options add further depth to the game.

Although the CPU does cheat sometimes (as almost all games of this genre do) there is a fair amount of variety and depth in the strategy itself. You can hold back on moving to try and set up a defensive counter attack, and then charge in with all your units at once. Or you can try and send some units around to the rear of your opponents, which allows for some devastating moves. Although there is a general "good strategy" I don't believe there is an absolute "best" strategy to win, which is a great sign for the game in general.

Outside of the specific combat mechanics, you have a very deep and interesting story, with some fascinating settings and character development, both for your team and the people around them. Using the prementioned RPG elements you can also develop and customise your squad, from different special abilities to different weapons. I won't go into all the detail, but believe me, it's quite deep.

You are also able to do "Skirmish fights" that allow you to get more funds and experience to develop your squad and general strategies outside of the main story line. To prevent generic grinding though there is a research cap which limits how much you can spend on general weapon development, to prevent you staying in skirmish mode and becoming over-powered. You need to be able to beat the main story mode to really progress, and the missions are really varied and interesting, from sneaking around bases to fighting mega tanks to general skirmishes in woodlands, deserts, open fields, cities and all sorts of other places, which all bring different stratergies to them.

Anyway, enough blabbing and description. Who else has the game, and what is their opinion of it? I personally am up to chapter 8 now and am really loving it. Anyone who is a fan of strategy or in depth RPG games I highly recommend to check this one out.

I really regret not jumping on this game back when it came out. Now I can't find it *anywhere* except online either at ridiculous prices or back-ordered.

At least I still have the demo...

I had to search pretty hard for it too. It was not a super over-hyped title launch, and it came out during the time many other good titles were released. Still, it's definitely worth the search if you can find it at a decent price.

Edit:

On reflection though, I fear this game might be the next Ico. Those that know it know it's incredible, but the general gaming media and game playing public have ignored it. I know it's a radically different genre, but the way it's been recieved and sold is very similar to that old game.

An incredibly polished masterpiece, eclipsed by several other big releases, understocked and sold, hardly reviewed or advertised, but those that know it know it's pure gold... hmmm...

Well, I believe I just finished chapter 8. According to the save file I've got 18 hours play time now, and that's ignoring all the restarts and replays I've done. I'd say I'm only 1/3rd of the game content through as well I'm guessing. To summarise, it's great, I'm still loving every minute of it.

I'm trying to do and read absolutely everything, fully upgrading all the bits and pieces before I move on though. There are several points that are skippable, like reading glossaries or skipping various tech trees you won't use. Even some of the cinematics are just fill ins that are intentionally designed to be skipped if you like. But let me say if you really want to dig into it, it's quite a lot to digest.

Anyone else care to comment?

Loved this game myself. The lady and I sat on the couch and played this every day until we beat it. It was our evening ritual for a couple of weeks, even found ourselves noticing that it was 4 a.m. on one or two occasions before finally turning it off.

My one complaint is that it's really hard to force yourself to accept mistakes. If you screw up a few times in some battles, it can be detrimental - and you certainly don't want your guys to die, because they stay dead! So we found ourselves re-loading a LOT of saves. Oops, didn't know there was a guy hiding in the grass there. ******, I need her to be able to snipe that lancer near the tank. Uugh. Re-load.
(I have the same issue with the Advance Wars games).

I know I shouldn't - I should just fight through it and roll with the punches - but I can't force myself to! The save file's RIGHT THERE... It's right there. I have to load it. God's telling me to load it.

Fantastic game though. Great mix of strategy, rpg, and realtime action. Hell of a fun story too, and an interesting universe - I loved digging into all the details and history, opening up all the extra scenes, and reading the various chapters and indexes.

This game started really great, but I dunno, the theme really started to go south after a certain point in the game.

Like the flying pig, and the magic crap

It started out as a war story that showed the harshness of war, but then it turned into welkin's magical wartime adventure.

Still a great game though.

Well, it was never meant to be an accurate WWII battle simulation. It's meant to be a fantastical retelling related to history. I did not mind the magical elements. Although they are often used in the game as an "instant win" thing, they do further enchance the story and setting, adding more depth to the unique universe they have created.

As for reloading/retrying, I've been guilty of that a few times. It's usually around the first turn that I'll be retrying and restarting. I remember especially the first battle against the monster tank, I retried that so many times to get the start right. If you do it right, you can wipe out the enemy squad, kill one turrent and have another half way down. Anything less and you would be back-pedalling the entire mission.

Still though, it reminds me of Fire Emblem. Although that game has less "active defence" you still need to be mindful of positioning, flanking, and unit strengths and weaknesses.

In the first Gamecube version of that game, you could either only save between missions or have one save mid mission, which would be deleted it as it was loaded, preventing people getting the "perfect turn" and retrying moves so their side always hits. The Wii sequel watered it down a little in that you could still only have one save mid battle, but it would not automatically delete itself once loaded.

In Fire Emblem though, once a unit had 0 health, it would be dead dead. No 3 turns to try and save it, it was killed permanently. I do like this new 3 turns chance to save, while having a chance for the enemy to kill them to prevent you doing kamikaze runs.
