Is it wrong to delete/republish?

Archive: 24 posts

Say you publish a level you've worked on for months. Within the first day, some jerk gives it a 2-star rating with a "Rubbish" tag. If other people see that, they wouldn't want to play something with that tag and rating.

So I ask again, under these circumstances, would it be wrong to delete and then republish the level?

Not at all, if you know your level is decent and really doesn't deserve the rating it has received then its most likely the case that someone has just tried to trash your level out of spite. Unfortunately this is quite common. I had to publish some of my levels a few times before they avoided the initial barrage of 1 star and rubbish tags. I knew myself they were definitely not 1 star levels so republished and they got off to a great start after.2009-03-23 12:46:00

Don`t feel guilty about it. It`s certainly not your fault that the first person to play your level was a jerk.

Tell your mates when you`re about to publish a level so that the first few tags and scores will be positive.

Not at all. The online system is flawed and requires people to republish and advertise their levels. Though some may see it as an exploit, it is necessary to get your weeks of work exposed to the community.2009-03-23 17:11:00

Check out my "Good publishing practices" thread under the help section. I experimented with publishing for a few solid weeks and found some time zones which much more consistently will produce better results to get a decent rating cemented - I've come to the conclusion that a lot of bad tags/ratigs are not necessarily people being maliceous - it seems to be kids that either don't know any better or THINK they are giving a correct opinion.

If your level truly IS a 4-5 star rated level and you get enough plays with at least 4 stars it pretty much will stay there (most kids will leave it at the prior rating).

Nothing wrong with it at all, unless the level name contains any of the following words:

"Ramp"
"Trophy"
"H4H"
"Prizes"
"Costume"

In which case, the only acceptable course of action is deleting the level entirely and never publishing it again.

Nothing wrong with that all. In fact, its probably needed knowing how broke cool levels, and most people that rate the levels are :-)

What I was wondering is if you delete and then re-publish, does this reset your chances of getting on cool levels?

Publishing in a new spot resets your chances. You don't have to delete the original unless you want to.

The search engine doesn't look to see if the level matches anything else on your published moon.

Thats cool to know, thanks thegide. I was going to publish a beta of my level this morning and then thought it may affect the chances when its published properly2009-03-24 22:43:00

I think that something worth considering about deleting a level is that it throws away the existing investment some players may already have put into it: their achieved score, uploaded level photos, comments and hearts will all become meaningless.2009-03-25 10:20:00

My new level Im working on has H4H in the title. Don't think it will be recieved quite as well by the H4Hers though as the others

EDIT: In fact, it will probably be the first level in LBP history to have H4H in the title and get a 1 star rating. You guys will have a laugh from it though

I've deleted and re-published a couple of times, mainly due to re-thinking the level after getting too many of certain tags. (laugh) If 'boring' is one of the top tags after 50 plays, you know something's wrong!

Btw, new to the forum, great to see so many posters here whose names I recognise from playing their levels!

i had 900+ plays on my karas level and 10% hearts, i ended up deleting it though since my tags went from brilliant complex and tricky to frustrating, difficult and tricky... which made me feel sad. and yes i then had to republish since i too didnt want the tags to discourage people.

after that i did revamped an tweaked everything in my level to make it a much easier experience and so far my feedbacks were a little better than my beta testing days.

The problem is people seem to think that 2 star is what you give to a level that you just don't like but know that work went into it.

My Killzone 2 Trailer level always got 2 stars because people said it was too hard (I really couldn't see it myself) but, for me at least, it had a lot of artistic work in it. The Helghast weren't just the cardboard sackboy cut outs, they had limbs and different weapons, they had proper helmets and required a head shot to kill rather than just anywhere.

I use a different way of doing scenery, to convey the feeling of a massive city I used the back layer to make proper buildings (with inside lighting) then the back thin layer was black rubber with lights to create the image of distant buildings.

The only bit that was hard was the ATAC, but I nerfed him to only 20 hit points, people still found him hard. It was probably because I said 'Ace the level to win the Stalker' but people probably didn't realise that it wasn't meant to be a walk in the park to ace...

1 star = Ramp

2 star = Ramp with the rocket glued on, only one skateboard and the ramp actually works!

3 star = A level with everything working and that had effort in it.

4 star = a level that was genuinely fun and different

5 star = Little big Deadspace (even though some of the monsters were a bit rubbish)

Little Dead Space was pretty but boring. Genre? Pretty boring. MM said 5 star is a level that leaves you with an adrenaline rush. Based on that, most of the 5 star levels are right now 3 or 4 stars - and the 5 star ones actually about put me to sleep - although looking at the pretty pictures made me sleep soundly.

My opinion? A 5 star level is something that adds new gameplay elements, does it's job in a flawless and fantastic way. If the gameplay and/or visuals are similar to 1000 other levels I've played, I don't consider it to be 5 star.

Sack's in the city? 5 star. Why? Completely unique open world LBP concept, and it lets you CHOOSE your difficulty based on which tasks you decide to perform. Brilliant.

(just wanted to throw that in there in case you weren't familiar with the author that just published below you).

I've seen four different 2 star levels on the cool pages since last night. Not only is it O.K. to republish I think right now we owe it to the community to re-release some of our quality content...this is absurd. Seriously, someone play the Mario Cart level on page one that's ranked 5 stars. It has 60,000 plays and a 5 star rating..yet its boring and simple, has no asthetic, and I can see dark matter holding up the background. 2009-03-30 08:50:00

LBDeadspace had the infamous 1st person intro sequence I think that's 5 stars

I agree. I gave it 5 stars too (even though the gameplay wasn't there, I agree with you). My point wasn't that "I" don't think its 5 stars, but the description of a 5 star level from MM wouldn't think so. Everyone judges based on their own set of criteria. My 7-year-old will think a level is 1 star just because it's too difficult for him....

I noticed this too and thought it was interesting. The cool pages seem to be moving so quickly now that quality levels aren't coming out fast enough. I've been working on a miniature golf game and was worried when one showed up in cool levels with ove 15,000 plays... until I played it and realized the gameplay was TERRIBLE.

You know..... now might be a good time to organize a re-release of Takelow's "The Bearer" series. It's one of the most beautiful series I've ever seen and it has so few plays it makes me sick. Would be kind of cool if we could, as a community, get him to republish, stick a bunch of hearts and high ratings on it, and push the whole series up into the cool pages together. Maybe a bunch of plays would get him motivated to finish it.

My favourite H4H bashing level has to be "A Level?s Journey in The Search Engine Jungle" by Rayvolution. Love those ugly "levels" skittering at your feet.
