"Battleground Of A God-Monster-Baby", boss battle

Hey guys. Please check out my "Battleground Of A God-Monster-Baby". It has a pretty epic (I hope) boss battle. I wanted to make a challenging shooter style boss. It's only rated a 3, but I think it's better than that.

The boss mechanics are deceptively complex. He jumps up and down & moves side to side. His side movements change depending on where you're standing. He has 3 different kind of attacks (changing with a timer & player location). His stomache will glow red to give you a warning of his dangerous missile attack. There is a spawnpoint behind a wall & the boss will back away, when you die and respawn. And it now has 2 difficulty settings.

Please check it out, & rate for craftsmanship.. & not difficulty.

sounds cool - I'll check it out tonight and let you know my reaction to it.


EDIT: ok - just took on the God-Monster-Baby..... and I WON! (Hard mode too!!) The thing I really liked about the boss battle was the buildup to it. It's funny and well done. I like your sense of humor.

The battle itself isn't impossible but I can see how some players would get frustrated pretty fast. I hung out in the box on the right and ran out a few times to gauge what it was capable of and what to look out for. Even knowing the basics of it's attacks it's still a tricky fight. The thing that got me the most were the missiles.

I had fun taking the "abomination" out so I gave it 4 stars and hearted it. Hope everyone out there who likes boss battles checks it out. C'mon it's only a God-Monster-Baby.

Anybody check it out? It's actually an older level, but I still really dig it. Many people have trouble with the boss, so I just now added an easy mode. (He only shoots the plasma & no missiles.) I like the easy-mode switch I made... I hope somebody sees it, haha.2009-03-24 13:51:00

I just tweaked a couple more things. I was never quite satisfied with his plasma shots (speed and spacing). Also, when I added the 'easy' setting, it was MUCH too easy. That's all fixed now. Also added some more lighting effects and misc detail. Oh, and I gave him more hitpoints. I think it's balanced much better now. (With an obvious difficulty shift on the 2 settings.)2009-03-27 10:00:00

I thought I'd let you know I played this, and thought it was pretty good. My only problem was that it was too short, and I would have rathered just starting with the boss fight. Also, the aesthetic design was contriversial! lol.

Would have been cool if the boss had some notable boss patterns, rather than just spitting fire and bombs everywhere.

Thanks for the input. I would have made the level longer, but it's completely MAXED. I can't even add a single prize bubble!

The boss does have patterns, but I guess they're kind of subtle?
-If you get too close to his feet he'll make the 'cry' sound and launch 3 missiles downward.
-If you stand farther away, his stomache will occasionally glow red and a hidden timer starts before he launches his long-range missiles at you.
-Anytime you die, or back up into the room with the checkpoint, the boss will back up to give you space.
-Also, his side to side movements vary depending on where you're standing. He'll 'charge' under the right circumstances.
-His plasma spray also changes depending on how close you are to him.
-If you play on 'easy' mode, he won't launch missiles at you at all.. (make sure you play the right one)

If I had more thermostat to work with, I'd give him more spray patterns. (spirals, etc) But overall, I'm still happy with how he turned out. I've played lots of terrible boss battles out there (& some great ones), but I haven't really encountered anything quite like this one. So I'm still happy with it.
