@ any iMac users (or mac users in general)

Archive: 10 posts

Recently my 20inch intel based imac has been taking around 3-5 minutes to start up, as oppose to the 30 seconds it took to get onto the desktop and start opening apps.

I have tried to solve this by clearing space on my hard-drive (i now have 110GB free), i have made it so that no apps open upon startup, and have run various checks etc. using onyX. I have also tried disconnecting all usb devices (apart from the mouse + keyboard) on the recommendation of various internet sites, but nothing has worked....

any help would be appreciated.

You could try this automator action I found once. It's very popular nowadays. (among other things) it rebuilds every index in your system, removing any wildgrowths in the process. Can be found here (official site of the maker): http://www.destinyofshadow.com/blog/?page_id=16
It'll take a long time to run the first time you use it and I recomend schedulling a regular clean-up afterwards (this function is integrated). Good luck!

Having used it and restarted my imac, it takes just as long to boot up, and looking at the results, everything seems ok in my apps and programs, though i have a load of things saying 'should be -rw-r--r-- they are lrw-r--r--' and i ahve no idea what that means... it also says that some things have been modified and will not be repaired, for example :
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modified and will not be repaired

also found some saying 'should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x '.

Any help for what this all means? :S thanks

It could have something to do with API's, which are basically little programsthat modify mac OS on a level or in a way that is not authorized by apple. They aren't spyware though. They can be very useful in what thy do but on the whole should be avoided. You should search wikipedia for 'API's' for more clues.2009-03-23 00:17:00

try OnyX, it allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, than if something is wrong you can repair it. I use it myself to clean my macbook. You can find it on apple web site.
