Download Speeds

Archive: 3 posts

Hi everyone, Can I just take this opportunity to send a message to every creator out there. I've noticed on a lot of levels i've played that in the comments section afterwards there are a lot of creators complaining that people are leaving tags or comments saying it's too difficult and asking them not to or even in some cases abusing them by saying things like 'you must be a noob' or 'don't cry , go and play a baby level'.

Apart from being very insulting it also shows that the creator is not taking other factors into account such as download speeds. For instance if the creator is in the USA or Japan or some other country where the state of their internet connection is not a problem then they seem to think that no matter how difficult they make the level it shouldn't be a problem for most players.

But that is not the case for most players in Europe or especially the UK like me. I have been playing games for years myself and have completed many big games on different formats like Final Fantasy 7,8,9 and 10, Front Mission 3 ( about 8 times ) Dragon Quest 8. I could go on with hundreds but you get the picture that I am a seasoned gamer and don't give up easily. However all these games have been offline and single player simply because online gaming for me always has been and still is impossible because the UK is years behind the rest of the world when it comes to the internet.

The gist of this is that when creators in this game make levels that require split second timing, perfectly accurate platforming and instant movement between layers they then get aggrieved when people can't do it, not because they are bad gamers but because of the internet connection and download speed. In my case for example the best speed I have ever achieved is 0.9 Mbps !! and before you say change providers that is the best speed I can get with anyone simply because of where i live and will not get any better for many years yet.

As an example just ask TheGide what it was like when I tried to play his awesome new level with him. Even he couldn't play his own level because of the lag that my connection was causing.

So in future please bear in mind that whenever you make a level, what you may consider moderate difficulty is amplified many times over for people like myself through no fault of our own, it's simply that our country is years behind the rest of the world with regards to download speeds and we have to suffer for it.

Yeah but maybe the level IS too hard even for single player. And the person creating it might think it's ok when it's not.

Personally when I create level I focuse of having a great design and polish. But it's impossible to consider everything. And the possible lag caused by the fact Media Molecule decided to connect people by P2P instead of paying for proper servers isn't really my problem.

I cannot start making extremely simple and easy levels simply because there might be people out there with a bad connection. I will always judge things with the majority. It's like the 1-2-3-4 players question. I will simply never test to see if a level is perfect for 4 players, I will check with one or two player since like 90% of people will play it that way. It's just too bad if it breaks for the couple of people that will play it 4 players.

Anyhow, I don't want to defend insulting commenters and poor creators, i'm just making a point that it's IMPOSSIBLE to design for everyone, and us players NEED to understand that.
