"Too much complexity" message? what does this mean?

Archive: 14 posts

After I leave the level I am working on, and return to my pod, I get a message saying that there is too much complexity in this part of the level, and I should try spacing my level out more.

Does anyone have any idea what this means?

I am not sure what part it is talking about, and it doesn't seem to be screwing anything up. It lets me go ahead and keep all the parts I want in there. After I save, and go back in, everything is still just fine.

Is this going to screw up the level? or is it just a warning?

It talks about the object/shape you are presently working on or trying to add to.

At some point the game restrict you when a shape reaches a certain amount of polygons. This simply means that each object/shape you make will hit a memory cap at some point. (perfectly normal it does that)

Anyhow, if you don't want this to happen, break your level in smaller parts. If you make a complex shape, it's better to glue mutliple parts together instead of trying to shape it one shot.

By the description you made, dobi, I think Ranger is wrong here. Because you left your level running, it sounds as if you're using emitters? Emitters that have emitted lots of objects into the level will take up a LOT of space. If you delete the things they've emitted, it should remove the message.

If this is not the case, then Ranger is probably right.

I've seen that message too. I understood it to be a general "heads up" from the system to let you know that in a very small physical area you have a lot for the program to chew on. It's either a lot of moving parts, a complex shape or several, complex lighting or reflection from a material used in that area - or some combination of all of that. Having all that going on in a small space makes it hard for the program to run it smoothly without a bit of lag. If you change nothing in that small area it should still run but it might begin to lag a bit. I'm having that problem on Chroma Stone 3 right now and will just have to live with it.

That's my understanding of the message.

hmmm.. I think I wasn't aware of that message. Actually it's cool that they are warning you about potentially engine-heavy levels.

At first I thought this was about the complex shape message...

However, this message will wot pop up when there's too much lighting fx going on... so you still get game slowdown.2009-03-19 23:51:00

It must be the object I made for rain. I made a bar with 48 emitters on it that each emit rain drops at a certain timeframe.

They are on a switch that kicks on after an action, and then kick off after you get a little further. So i should just tweek it a bit and maybe lose some of the emitters?

The problem is that I only get the message after I close the level so I have to assume that is it.

Sounds like it could be the culprit. Does it lag when you play it?

Yeah, but it also sounds really cool. I hope you get it working -I want to see this!

I don't know if it lags. I haven't tried to play it yet. It was one of the finishing touches to the level. I built everything else first, then added that last.

The funny thing is that it didn't do much to the thermo. Only added about a bar.

Now I need to tweek the crap out of it and add a bit more lighting on a whole section of the level. I still have about 3 more bars of thermo for doing light tweeking and stickers.

I am proud of this one

I got the same message in a location I created a fairly complex "cut scene" in. The message was definitely specific to a precise area where there was a lot of things going on at once.2009-03-21 23:04:00

Did it prevent the level from publishing?2009-03-22 15:22:00

No, it just appeared to be a warning message. It kept giving it to me when I continued to add things in that area, but it did allow me to add them (and later publish).
