Mini-Golf Game Featuring YOU

Archive: 10 posts

Ok, here's what I want to do:

I would like to build a miniature golf game using members from this site. The idea is to not only create a fun level that is non-frustrating and has a high-play potential, but also use it to promote YOU as a creator.

Requirements to be part of this project:

* You need to have good visual skills.
* You will need to build a SINGLE section of the golf course using 2 thick layers (you can even have some platforming in it if you like)
* You can have 2-4 holes in your gameplay section
* The closest layer will be used for the golf part.

Your section will have a nice magic mouth introducing you as an author.

I will do all the golf mechanics. I already have a system in place for this that works well.

Anyone want to work with me on this?

Hi. I'm loving the sound of that and would like to participate. What exactly are you wanting people to contribute. If you have the game mechanics sorted already is it just the designs you are looking for. If so what would you think of using some of my homemade Wallace and Gromit stuff from my level. My very early levels were made using mostly story mode stuff but ever since then I've tried to make my own objects and characters and utilise them. Let me know what you think anyway and when you're looking at starting.2009-03-19 15:04:00

For the first game (if it's a success maybe we can do more) I need 4 creators (we can add more if we have thermo).

Here's what I was thinking: You would create a "box shaped" platforming area using whatever theme you wanted. To give you an idea of how big it can be - take a camera zone - zoom out and pan all the way to the right. As far as you can see to the right - that's how big an area you have to work with. You have complete use of the entire background and 2 thick layers.

You or I can add the closes thick layer with a little golf green and several holes. You can even have any small animated obstacle objects on the front layer if you want (like a wall moving up and down which the person has to time-hit the ball through)

Here's the way the mechanic works:

A little golf dude stands on the green. You grab the green to make your shot. As you hold, the club swings back. When you let go the club swings forward and hits a golf ball a distance based on how long you held down. Based on which hole the ball goes in point bubbles will drop down. When 10 balls are used, a door will open to the next section.

The golf swing mechanics are actually kind of sophisticated and will result in a nice "feel" to the game. (it consists of a whole BUNCH of switch mechanics behind the scenes). It will be fast paced because the person can just swing and swing to quickly make shots - which will result in point bubbles falling faster so the player can pick up X score by picking up more point bubbles at one time (the bubbles will disappear after a few seconds, which will add some more fast-paced gameplay).

I figure I'm really good at creating a good arcade fast-paced feel to my games, but many other authors are better at creating the graphics so this should be a good mix.

Also, if you want to use existing content from your levels and build an area to promote a specific level in LBP that would be fine.

Seeing as you wanted four people, count me in - I love the sound of it and I have a lot of doodling time to work out graphics
When will we need to have this ready?

I actually have a first "demo" stage about ready to give you an idea of how it works. I'll send the 3 of you (whoever is still interested) a key in the next day or 2 so you can go in and get an idea.

Basically, the thing that is going to make this level fun is going to be the ball obstacles. In the first stage, I build a farm theme consisting of a silo (that you hit the ball into the top), a windmill (which you have to time your hit so that it lands on the spinning wheel - which makes the ball fall into a carriage), and a barn (theres a hole in the roof you have to hit the ball into).

Each "target" can be a different number of points depending on how hard it is.

Start thinking about the theme of your stage and the different obstacles that you would put in it. I can adjust the physics of the ball in each stage in order to hit the different targets.

This is going to be a really "cutesy" level with, hopefully, some great custom content.

Sounds very cool, I won't be able to participate but I look forward to playing it when it's done.2009-03-22 17:25:00

Ok, sounds really good and I'm starting to get an idea about what to do. Already I'm seeing what sort of graphics we'll be looking towards. Thanks for this oppotunity CC 2009-03-22 18:23:00

I've just had a look, it's great how it al works. I'm gonna start having a play with some ideas tomorrow I think. I've got a few now after seeing the demo.2009-03-22 21:34:00
