Survival!

Archive: 11 posts

Alright, so basically what I'm doing is making a survival challenge where you have to dodge falling objects.

What I want to do is have a light (turned off) move back and forth across the field, then every so often, at almost random places, stop for a few seconds and make an obstacle fall, then have the light turn off again; repeating the process (like I said) at almost random (or completely random) intervals.(Sort of like the last stage in the MGS pack where the bombs are emitted super fast)

Could someone please help me with how to do this? (Also, if anyone has any ideas of how to make my challenge harder, I'd love to hear them)

TY in advance

Well, I achieved a similar effect with the boss in my latest level, so here's what I did. Bear in my mind, there may be other, more elegant solutions than this, and that this only gives an appearance of randomness (it should, in actuality, behave the same every time it is run):

Game Piston: Your light and emitter(s) obviously will be attached to some object on a piston moving back and forth across your field. What we will do is "randomly" stop the piston and at that time, turn on the light and shoot the emitter.

Off screen controls:

Piston A: One piston with mag key on the piston and switch at the end, set at a different pace than the visible game piston, and set to the "Speed" control, with a large enough radius to always keep the the key inside it. It is wired to the next piston (Piston B):

Piston B: This piston has the mag switch on the moving block and mag keys set at varied intervals along its path. The switch will be set to "Directional" and attached to the last piston (C):

Piston C: This is the "switch". It will have the key on the block, set to move very quickly. At the end will be three mag switches:

One set to "On/Off" and "Inverted" - this is wired to the Game Piston.
Another set to "On/Off" - this is wired to the light.
The third set to "One Shot" - wired to the emitter.

So... the combination of Piston A changing the speed of Piston B which then hits its keys at different intervals, gives the illusion of randomness. The major drawback to this is that the length of time it is stopped (stationary) will also be "random".

Note: make sure you make the pistons long enough to be effective (especially piston B).

Piston A:

[S]-----------------[K] (set to speed with a large radius)

Piston B:

[K]--------------------------------------[S] (set to directional)
_____[K]_________[K]_____[K]___[K]_____[K]

Piston C:

[S]
[S]-------[K]
[S]

[ ] = Block of material (glass is usually good)
S = Mag Switch
K = Mag Key
--- = Piston

Thank you, this helped me a lot. My only problem is that when the piston stops and the emitter makes the object appear, it has something of a twist depending on what side of the field it stopped on. (almost like the angular velocity setting)

TY though, this helped a lot.

No problem - glad to be able to help.

Probably the inertia of the piston. Even though we've stopped it, we are also emitting the very same 0.1/sec. Try setting the Sync on the emitter. This will make it pause - for whatever time you set - before it emits (perhaps 0.5 ?? you'll have to play around with it). I think this will fix your problem.

Good luck!

Actually what I did was set up glass on the thin layer as guiding walls. It looks kind of like a fence. Then what I did was put mag. switches in between the "pegs" and have them each connected to a light so that when an obstacle passes in between them, the two lights on either side light up. (This doesn't necessarily look very good, because the game piston is actually above the game area, and the light goes on but nothing usually falls there).

Thank you though, I will try your idea and see if it helps. Also, do you have any ideas for increasing difficulty?
(I already have piston B set to increase difficulty b/c I have emitters set to emit more mag. keys from a timer-car-thing, and the sponge you have to swing on attaches to a winch that turns on, to increase the difficulty more.)

If you'd like I could take pics and post them. (That's allowed right?)

Allowed and encouraged. Use one of the free photo post sites like Photobucket or Flickr.

The pics would help, as I can't quite picture what you've described.
