"...but to his satisfaction he realized that he had proved conclusively that if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion."

Trin Tragula- creator of the Total Perspective Vortex
Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Still - I like living on our "utterly insignificant little blue-green planet."

you know the constellation orion right? The one you see in the winter that has the three stars across from each other?

well the last giant star in the gif is in the canis major constellation which is to the bottom left of orion. In legend orion was a hunter and canis major was his dog...or something like that.

In case your wondering:

If you find orion's belt, then look towards his head, the star at right-angles to his belt is betelguese

Just thought I'd let you know.

Agree. Luckily it's just too much for us to comprehend. Or else we might end up like Doc Manhattan(in your sig) and think of life as no an overrated phenomena.

Hehe, I hope you're right about wearing down that ego a bit... but stars can't think, love or do anything else than just being the cosmic lighters they are. you'd have to be either a chainsmoker with a hole in your pocket or a scientist to keep your fascination in stars alive.

This is fairly amazing. I knew there was MUCH bigger stuff then the Sun but these things are just colossal.

And just to think, there are so many more things like that out there that no-one could ever reach, not even at the speed of light.

Man, that's just amazing! It just makes me wonder what sort of magnificent things exist in that endless abyss outside our little planet we call space. There's probably stars out there that make that VY star look like a tiny dot compared to it!:eek:2009-03-22 21:43:00

Oh dang, if we ever find a planet that dig to live in, screw overpopulation, we'd have to work ages to put people scattered all around it.
Altho that would be pretty cool, living in a planet bigger than our solar system, since there would take so much to discover you'd probably hear new stuff everyday as with a planet so big must come with an immense variation of other organisms.

That would be pretty cool, but I'm ok living on this compared to the rest of the universe small, green and blue planet.
