MARKLIN's Artwork thread

Archive: 87 posts

Hi, i noticed that everybody is showcasing all of their sigs and other artwork and i thought that it would be a shame to let all my artwork just lie around on my hard drive. So therefore i now open Marklin's first official artwork dump.

All pictures are in order of creation, with the newest first.
WARNING A lot of pictures, people with slow internet may need to be cautious...

my DeviantART page:
http://strangeworlds.deviantart.com/

Digital art:

http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs43/i/2009/105/2/7/Zoe_the_cat_by_theMarkliN.jpg
This is my photoshop version of the cat drawing i've also posted, i made it using a tablet i borrowed.
http://fc05.deviantart.com/fs45/f/2009/120/2/d/The_Dragon__s_orb_by_theMarkliN.png A new photoshop painting made using the tablet, this time starring a hairy dragon and his dragon orb!

Sigs:

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt292/marklin88/Helghast-text.gif
Another animated sig, but this one turned out really well. I wanted to capture a helghast propaganda feel and i think i managed that pretty well. =)
http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt292/marklin88/Dark-archon-animation.gif
This is my first attempt at an animated signature, as you can see it doesn't run that smoothly .
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/images/3022/1_Goldenmask-1.png
My sig of the week round 11 entry, and I'm really satisfied with this one, it looks much better than i hoped it would. When i started creating it i thought of it more as a desperate attempt to get an entry into the latest sig of the week round...
Edit: 1st place in the sig of the week contest!

These are two Ratchet and clank signatures i made for Uzman

A WATCHMEN sig i made for walter kovacs
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=3082
My Sig of the week round 10 entry, with the theme technology.
Edit: It came to 2 Place!

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2989
Jay, my first sprite sig! It doesn't even look remotely as good as some i've seen but i still think it's pretty good for being my first try.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2966
Sig of the week entry 2, version 2
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/images/3022/1_War_Sig_of_the_week_copy.png
My second sig of the week round 9 entry.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2955
My war themed sig of the week round 9 entry. Took around 4 hours to make and had almost a 100 layers when i was finished... I merge them way to seldom.
Edit: it came on second place!
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2924
A warhammer orc, or greenskin as they also are called. It's filled with different effects and renders which can make it pretty hard to discern the render but otherwise i'm pretty satified with it.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2915
This beauty(?) was at first supposed to be a background for a sig i wanted to draw (with my mouse) in photoshop. but the drawing turned out horrible and only the background clouds looked somewhat good, after deleting the front layers and adding several weird blending options, filters smudges stamps and so on, i got this...
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2909
<3
Basically it's made through smudging some C4D renders and then adding some lines and some stars, basically...
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2903
Different versions of this signature:
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2918
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2917http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2916
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2901
C4D renders and then lots of different effects added to that, and of course i added some lines with dots on them after that.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=352&pictureid=2874
Clan tag made for the Killzone clan on the forum.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2844
Splatter!
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2838
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2836
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=2837
My first sig! Made the renders myself, i took a screenshot, cut the sackboy out, made it black, cut those cool holes out of it and added some creepy sackghast eyes.

Avatars:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=349&pictureid=3026
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/image.php?u=3022&dateline=1232902224
Both made singlehandedly from scratch by me, no renders or stock .

Drawings:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=356&pictureid=2947
"Drawing hands" inspired by Eschers work with the same name. But here the hands are on a wacom tablet instead of paper . The right (lower) hand is supposed to look like that, it's a very weird way to hold a pen but that's how Escher drew it in the original.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=356&pictureid=2950
This one got totally ruined by the scanner , it's not supposed to be that dark and you were able to see the right eye... BTW that's our cute little cat.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=356&pictureid=2941
My cat again, this is my favorite of all the drawing i've made.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=356&pictureid=2937
Made in art class, that's not me who's portrayed.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=356&pictureid=2934
a bat, it's supposed to be upside down, it's the text that's wrong...

Those are really, really good! My favourite one is the Green Skin, you really need to make a tutorial for that. Actually..... my favourite one is the Blue Chaos because there are some really amazing effects on it. Actually........ Abstract Nebula is pretty awesome. In fact...... I love Abstract Green.

Well, they are all amazing well done. Apart from the bottom one mainly because I don't like fractal effects. Also, I'd put a bit of space in-between them so they are all fully visible.

Thanks, i like the parrot too (even if i should have made the eye better) but i think the assault sig is a pretty interesting choice.
BTW: doesn't anyone want a sig? i'm a little tired of making hundreds of sigs i newer have the time to use and just lie around in this thread...

I've also updated the thread with a new sig, not my best but still pretty good.

Hey how did you do that one on the wall/black and white? Was that just a pic you found and contrasted it to black and white, or find edge tool, then traced it to make it uniform, added your name? Did you draw the whole thing? Are these enough questions for you?2009-03-19 15:27:00

Nope, that's not enough questions.
neeed more queeestions to feed my hunger for knowledge about what other people don't know...

I just took random soldier guy from google pictures and made some (most) outlines with the polygonal lasso tool and then i hid the soldier and added some more in the empty places to make it look better. But the bullet is made completely by me .

Maybe, but this week was a little extreme, i have been sick and couldn't go to school. And sig making is the perfect way to fill endless amounts of spare time, it's fun and it takes a lot of time.

God, you're actually one of my favourite sig-makers on this site. I abosolutely love all of your signatures, and how they all give spectacular effects that credit the already beautiful renders.

I don't have a favourite of your signatures, just because it's so hard to choose one that I like better than another. Keep up the great work, and stick with the green smudged brick walls. O_O

I wish i were old enough to begin digital art in high school ...

Concerning the sig request i would be grateful if you could tell me if there's anything specific (color, render, etc) you want in the sig. Otherwise you might end up with a pink sig with my little pony renders and flowers in the colors of the rainbow in your inbox...
You also may need to wait until next weekend as i will be pretty busy this week, but next weeks off so then i wil have as much time as i want to make sigs.

Hmm. I'll think about it. First i will have to create a sig that i like enough to make a tutorial about... Then i need lots of spare time... That means that it will have to wait either until summer or if i am lucky until the Easter holiday.
In the meantime i recommend you to have a look at sigtutorials.com, they have many high quality tutorials (which are what i have used to learn everything i need from).

Updated with newer version of tech sig of the week. (only some minor changes to the text and color of the sig, the old one can be seen in my gallery.)

I am actually drueling over your signatures now! How did you get that scan line effect on that ratchet and clank sig?

Can we have a few tutorials? Even if it's just a brief one, going through the stages that you go through for making a signature?

O.o lots of feedback, THANKS everyone, it's really appreciated!

@Olit
I will try to get a tutorial done this week .

Scan lines are made using a pattern you have made, to create the pattern open a new 3x3 document and make 3 black/other color dots going diagonally from one of the corners to the other and the rest transparent, which corner depends on which way you want the lines to go. Then go Edit>Define pattern (at least i think it's edit...).
To apply the pattern you chose the right layer, it must have something in it as the pattern is applied to the already existing parts, go to Layer>layer properties or just double click on the layer symbol, then go to pattern and choose your pattern.
Done.
To get the effect in the ratchet sig i put some of those leaves you get as a basic brush, then i motion blurred them, deleted the parts over the render and applied the pattern.
To get the effect i used in the orc sig i think first applied the image did some selections with the rectangular marquee tool and just applied the pattern. If that doesn't work i must have made the selections and then layered them via a copy and then applied the pattern to that.

Hope that helped!

edit: I have updated the thread with my latest sig of the week entry!

Well, not as smooth as i would want, but still smooth enough. If you look closely you can see that the text moves with a little too much space between the frames and that it lags when it changes bat to it's original position.

BTW, i think i'm going to make a tutorial on how i made that sig, is that ok for you or do you prefer that i'd take another sig?

You are not supposed to be able to read it, it's in the alphabet used by the helghast!

Actually it's pretty easy to do, but i don't know if it works in gimp.
In photoshop you go to windows>animation and a animation window will pop up, then you just need to copy the first frame, move the text down a little(i moved it 8 pixels down / frame, which turned out a little laggy), and repeat. There are 4 characters which I duplicated, moved and merged so that i got 8 characters in a row, then i just moved the whole thing down until the same character that was farthest down in the beginning was almost there again. Then just make it repeat itself infinately and you're done.

That one?
Sure, that one was even pretty easy so i wont have any problems trying to remember what i did. But i have to say i like the helghast one better, the animation was the easiest thing to do, there's so much more to it (which will make it ridiculously hard to try explain everything i did ). So Ratchet it is.
BTW, i have decided that i will try make a real tutorial instead of just roughly explaining how i made it, this means screenshots of settings and of every step in the progress.

Yeah, and i still think you make sigs of win. IMHO some of the best sigs in the whole forum.

my stuff is worth nothing compared to your work... (how the bananaz did you manage to make that dragon? O_o)

You shouldn't compare sigs to photoshop paintings , I'm sure that with a tablet and a lot of patience you could do things just as good.
Thats how i made the dragon, and the cat too. I think the dragon took something between ten and twenty hours and the cat about 8...

WoW! I really need a tablet.

Get one! They are really great, it feels just as if you are drawing with pen and paper but at the same time you have all the wonders of photoshop at your disposal.

Beast.

It has been 4 months? Really? Or was it an exaggeration?

I hope you stay this time. Your artwork is pretty amazing!

Man I miss him in the sig contests, always great stuff - and we could have used him in the exchange But alas, four months marklinless yet again.

Still hoping it was sarcasm.

Yeah, about four months. I may have posted one or two posts one boring afternoon or something like that but i've never really been active for about 4 months. =(

Less thinking and more ACTION! GoGoGo!

Man I miss him

Aaawww, actually i've missed you guys too...
None of the other forums and sites have been even half as fun as this one.

Actually no that i think of it i would like to be more active here again, sadly i haven't been playing lbp for a very long time, but i have an almost finished level that has been nagging me for some time now... And i would like to do some sigs again!
Is the sig of the week contest still running? =D

Also that sig exchange thread looks really fun!

Keep your eyes peeled for SotW, I may revive it at some point, maybe changing it to Sig of the Fortnight or something. I've already got permission, I'm just holding off for a bit though.2009-09-07 22:54:00

Welcome back Marklin, I've been walking a fine line of being a lurker here over the summer, haven't touched LBP for months. But I still like this community, lots of creative people here.

Nice digital paints, I've been getting into digital art lots over the last 2 months. Haven't updated my sketchbook in a while, but I just added you on deviantart most of my stuff goes there.

Yeah i saw you had, you are getting better than me at that too =D. (I'll blame it on that you are 4 years older than me)

Btw that is an old deviantart account, i decided to start over with a new account (also i hated the old name).
My new one is called StrangeWorlds.

Ah don't worry, you have plenty of potential, and there will always be someone better than you. There are hundreds of people who I'm envious of, but getting anywhere takes time. Let them be a big motivation rather than an obstacle
You still beat me at photoshopping avatar/sig skillz

Saw your new stuff on deviantart. Great job. Nice warm colours in the panda one.

You should join up on http://www.polykarbonbbs.com/

I joined up at the start of the summer, and finding it a very nice small community of artists. All levels of skill, you'll find a lot of help there with critique and feedback.
Plus lots of fun things like sketch exchange and collabs.
My username is Billov over there btw.

I'm sorry but i don't think i have the energy for things like this right now, I haven't even been able to produce one signatures for the sig exchange...
But why don't you download gimp or something like that and try to do it yourself?

Hehe, i think i am already member of to many sites, so at the moment i don't think i will be able to handle another one. I am planning to become a more serious DA user, i hope to get some feedback on my art from there, or at least more attention. You have probably noticed that there isn't really much happening on my page at the moment ^^.
But maybe when i have accomplished that i'll join.

Of course i've followed tutorials, how else are you supposed to learn? But i am proud to say that at least 70 % are made without tutorials.2009-09-24 08:01:00

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with tutorials. I still to this day follow tutorials when I see a good one with techniques I haven't used, though I try to add my own steps in.2009-09-25 03:11:00
