Force Feedback object/tool (rumble)

Archive: 19 posts

Morgana25 came to me with this excellent suggestion.

Implement a tool/object to add force feedback "rumble". Could work in much the same way as the sound effects objects work. Connect and control via switch or proximity.

Very nice. Would work well in conjunction with sound effects to create atmosphere.2009-03-17 15:49:00

Kind of interesting - this is something Geosautus asked for when MM interviewed him a few months ago. He also asked for the environment control (lighting in different areas) which we know is coming soon.2009-03-17 15:52:00

...which we know is coming soon.

Does anyone know how soon? I'm itching for it...

I've heard it's in the next major update. They already used it in the MGS pack, so we know the engine is capable of it. (the environment object, not force feedback).

Of course, there IS an interesting way of doing some force feedback now - you could emit poisonous gas below the feet of sackboy out of sight in controlled circumstances to make a rumble. For instance, if sackboy is driving a car you could have a hidden area in the body of the car below sackboy in which you can emit hidden gas or fire when the car goes over a bump.

(I have no level to create right now, but I'm giving away all my good ideas. I won't have any secrets on my next level....)

So gas causes force feedback?

I wouldn't know... I don't own any dualshock controllers >.>

Yep. When you get close to a hazard your controller rumbles.2009-03-17 19:52:00

Yeah when you are really close to any danger the controller starts to rumble.

When Sackboy gets near electric, fire, or gas the controller rumbles.

Poop - Killian AND Marklin hit post reply first. Ok, read above this post. Man, what are we a bunch of vultures sitting on top of this thread?

That could get very annoying. Especially in levels where it is used for effect.2009-03-17 20:15:00

Possible, but no more annoying than anything else that has been implemented poorly. The key is doing it well and in the appropriate places.2009-03-17 20:19:00

No, I meant the fact that it rumbles near gas etc. Gas is used to make effects in some levels, eg bi-polar negatives has the whole level basically on fire.2009-03-17 20:23:00

Isn't there some "sprooch" sound when you emit gaz?

The solution would be to emit spikes! They also make the controller rumble (all "dangers" do.

Yeah we already established that. However, there may not be space to emit anything.2009-03-17 22:11:00

This is one of the best ideas I've yet seen!

Spikes were never specifically mentioned.

Yes, very good suggestion, that is actually possible, useful and simple. People here go over the top a lot (just see the powerups thread! )2009-03-19 07:52:00
