Well "purists" will think differently but my favourite RPG of all time is Oblivion. Many people prefer Morrowind but IMO the combat system sucks. I've spent about 250 hours (I think) in Cyrodiil though I've stopped playing now. It's an amazing game. Though it does still remain quite hard even if you spend the time to upgrade efficiently.

Another one which has caught my eye is "The Witcher". I'll probably wait until it comes out on consoles but the PC demo is excellent. Just long enough to get used to the game too. It's based on "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Saphowski. The world is fascinating and is a realistic fantasy setting with themes of racism, prostitution and other "adult" themes. I think Geralt is an excellent character. And the combat system is excellent for a PC WRPG, it's still point and click but by using multi-click combos, stylish combat animations and a smart over-the-shoulder camera (well not over-the-shoulder, behind the character but you're zoomed in pretty close), it maintains my interest levels and the demo had me wanting a lot more. I've finished it multiple times. So I'm considering buying the full PC game as the console version is going to have a completely different combat system which looks a little similar to Assassin's Creed. Which is pretty impressive for a WRPG and it could end up being even better than AC combat system.

I've never really got into another RPG. I've spent 20 hours with Fallout 3 but it just didn't maintain my interest. About the same amount of time with FFVII and I pick it up now and again on my PSP but it's slow going. I wonder if I'll ever finish it. Valkyria Chronicles seems pretty cool, I'm about 3 hours in. Usually I just played one or two missions and then stop. I've spent a small amount of time playing loads of other RPGs but none (other than the ones mentioned above) have been able to keep me interested for more than 4/5 hours.

EDIT: What RPGs do you like BTW (other than Oblivion)? I've played a good few so even though they didn't maintain my interest levels I might still be able to recommend a few.

Well on the PSP there's FF Tactics, Jeanne D'Arc and Disgaea. They're all SRPGs though and I dunno if you like them. They all last a long time. I'm pretty sure Disgaea can go on infinitely due to the Item World. FF Tactics, I've heard, is quite a long game. Jeanne D'Arc is probably the shortest. I didn't like FF Tactics as I found the pace of battles too slow. Disgaea is silly fun really, I play it for a good while as progress is quite quick but the story was just too silly for liking. Jeanne D'Arc is my favourite of the three with a great story, excellent animated cut-scenes with great voice acting and a fun SRPG battle system.

As far as JRPGs go there are the two Star Ocean games which seem quite good but the battle system is very "mash x". I haven't played the 2nd one but it's probably similar to the 1st.

Brave Story- New Traveller is quite good IMO. It's a fun JRPG with a good turn-based battle system. I'd advise checking it out, it's not amazing but it's quite fun.

Do you have CFW? Because there are a number of retro games that I could recommend which still hold up well.

I played the demo of Eternal Sonata but didn't like it all that much... well not enough to buy it anyway. The battle system was pretty cool though, I loved the light & dark aspect. By all accounts it's a very good game (if you're into JRPGs), I find the Chopin aspect interesting and the music should be excellent.

You might enjoy Folklore. It's has quite an engrossing story and the gameplay is very good. The pacing takes a while to get used to but once you've done two Netherworld levels with Ellen and two with Keats you should be fine. Also the game is quite beautiful to look at and it's a decent length. I haven't started it up again since my PS3 broke ages ago and I lost my saves but one of these days... .

EDIT: Just started playing Folklore again today and it's an excellent game. The pacing however is a little slow so I don't play it for long sessions, but hey, that's just me. If a game is slow paced but I really like it I usually play it for an hour or two a day. In this case do a level or two with both Ellen and Keats. I highly recommend it, it could be exactly the kind of game you're looking for.

Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Get it on an emulator or something. It was one of the first RPGs I played and have beat it countless times because it's so fun to play. Might be outclassed by some of the most recent RPGs but it still brings back memories every time I see it. Tales of Symphonia is pretty good too.2009-03-16 04:36:00

Ultima IV, Ultima VII part 2 - The Serpent Isles; Bioforge; System Shock 2... err... more recently...

I disagree with the idea of something like Valkyria Chronicles being classified as a RPG. It's a pure strategy game with RPG elements. The Disgaea and Fire Emblem series are other examples of games that are Strategy with RPG bits. I'd say the test would be if you strip out the RPG parts, you are still left with a pure strategy game. Something like Oblivion, however, if you strip the RPG out you are left with a big empty world and not much of a game.

Let me think about recent ones. Tales of Symphonia was and is brilliant, but it's a Gamecube release, last generation. Bioshock is excellent, though some would say it's a FPS more than a RPG. World of Warcraft is good, but it's techically a MMORPG and so some would classify it differently because of that.

I'm trying to think of current gen excellent RPGs though. Crystal Chronicles Ring of Fate on the DS is brilliant, and a sequel is coming soon. But current RPGs on the PS3, like Folklore, Oblivion, Fallout... they just haven't grabbed me as much as the older ones. They are good games in and of themselves, but they haven't held me for as long as some of the older titles.

Disgaea and VC are known as SRPGs. Oblivion is known as a WRPG. They are sub-genres of the RPG genre just like JRPGs.

I really love Oblivion, Folklore (not strictly RPG but very good.) I like older RPG's though too. Most of the Final Fantasy games were cool. If you have a PC I really REALLY liked Baldur's Gate.2009-03-20 04:55:00

sorry to bump a really old thread, but it's better then cluttering up the threads with useless threads that are already being discussed.

I'm looking still for a good RPG, on either PS3 or PS2, any suggestions?

Hmmm on PS2 Rogue Galaxy is very good. I don't like RPGs but it held my interest for longer than most. Also the Dark Cloud games are supposed to be excellent especially 2. The town builder mechanic seems very like a new, more advanced version of Actraiser for the SNES and that was extremely addictive. Those 3 are made by Level 5 (White Knight Chronicles).

Odin Sphere is also good. It's by the same company that are currently making the Muramasu game for the Wii which looks fantastic. Odin Sphere is a beautiful 2.5D game and you play through 4/5 different characters' stories. Each battle zone is a circle (ie. if you keep walking you'll get back to the start) and basically you clear it of all enemies. Seriously the art style is fantastic. Trailer:

YouTube - New Odin Sphere English Trailer

I have FF10 and 12 too but I'm guessing you've played them. Never really got into either.

Also there's always the Persona games which again are supposed to be fantastic though I've never played them.

Two Worlds. I got Epic Edition for ?4 when it was on steam offer but I'd certainly pay up the ?14 it is now.

Voice acting is very meh, and it's only fun really when you're not an archer but the fact it has both a massive single player and a multiplayer with really cool admins makes it unique against Oblivion.

It also has an awesome way of improving equipment:

If you get two of the same item you can stack them and make the same mesh n textures have better stats. So you can have a cool char that you like but not sacrifice numbers.

Also with my necromancy and fire usage I like to stack spellcards. You get 3 spell slots which you can put your spellcard in, then you can stack the same spellcard ontop to get bonuses and then you get booster cars which can be added to any spell and they improve stats even more and even they can be stacked too!

I can one hit anything with my poison cloud now

Though try oblivion n such first, this is more of a niche game and you either love it or hate it.

i personally liked Evolution Worlds on gamecube. it may not have been the best, though, compared to newer games XD

the dungeons were quite interesting, but got decently hard. it had really cheesy names, an odd story line, and is actually two games in one (they remade two games of the same series and put them together). because of that last part, some of it doesnt quite flow. but its still a good game.

oh, and i couldnt beat the final boss for my life D: im sad to admit i actually used a cheat. just on the last boss though.

Unless I missed someone mentioning it, I can't believe Kingdom Hearts hasn't come up yet.

Those two games for ps2 were by far the most gripping/addictive rpgs I've ever played...

Much different than the stereotypical RPG though.

@ ApellesJr

I agree, Kingdom Hearts was an amazingly excellent game but after the first 5 times I completed it, it gets a bit dull

As with all RPGs though, I never really got into them .

The best RPGs gotta be anti-tank ones, the explosion is pretty powerful you know, altho if you miss it can take some time to re-load, but if you have someone to cover you while you're reloading you should be ok.

No but seriously, i'd reccomend both ".Hack//" series , they're kinda difficult to find tho, but they are pretty good, altho they're just for the PS2... (They should make more of them for PS3...)

Well I didn't know that playing through a game "only" 5 warrants it "dull"

The only game I've ever played through 5 times in my life was Jak and Daxter. (Which if you haven't played, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest it)
(Not counting game boy games)

What... it... can't be...?

ANOTHER TALES OF FAN ZOMG WOOT!

... Yeah, I also suggest Symphonia, kmills just asked for PS2/PS3 games... I kinda like Abyss better, although I can understand some not liking the main character (he goes from a whiny spoiled prince to an emo kid :/) but yeah.

... I just hope they release Vesperia PS3 and Vs over here >_>.

... O_o wow another guy who actually likes Tales of here...

To be honest though, I only ever played Symphonia 1 and 2 and Abyss... I want to get some PS1 ones but those are like 90 bucks each, so... nope lol.

But still... get those, anyone who can. NOW.
