Floaty ghosts

Hi, I am trying to get spooky floaty ghosts to happen but I can't get it. How do I do it? The only way I can think is a piston but you can't make that invisible to my knowledge. Thanks, Neil | 2009-03-15 20:28:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
Hi, I am trying to get spooky floaty ghosts to happen but I can't get it. How do I do it? The only way I can think is a piston but you can't make that invisible to my knowledge. Thanks, Neil Just hire me. xD Naw, I think you're referring to emitting them, theres plenty of tutorials available on emitters, so I'm sure you'll be able to work it out from them. Also, it is possible to make pistons invisible. This can only happen if you set the minimum length to 0.0, however. | 2009-03-15 20:38:00 Author: Bear Posts: 2079 |
Ok, you need 2 thick layers and the thin layer in-between for this. Make a block of material go up and down using pistons. Glue your ghost onto the block of material going up and down. Then make a thin layer in-between to hide the block of material and the piston/s. Viola, you have your floating ghost. Hope it helped, and I hope it wasn't too vague. EDIT: Or you can do it with a winch which is much simpler but doesn't look as good. | 2009-03-15 20:47:00 Author: olit123 Posts: 1341 |
I don't want to emit them. I want an effect similar to that seen in the story levels. N. | 2009-03-15 20:49:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
Olit123 - I'm afraid I didn't follow you at all. You said two thick layers but didn't say what to do with them both. I can't see how a layer in the middle would hide a moving piston. If you can clarify, that would be awesome. N. | 2009-03-16 01:27:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn288/kieshain/explanation.jpg I think this is was Olit123 means. If I'm wrong, please do correct me but I remember it being like this. Oh and my apologies for my uber paint skills. | 2009-03-16 07:27:00 Author: Dynashock Posts: 69 |
I want an effect similar to that seen in the story levels. Attatch a wheel of any material onto a piece of dark matter above with a motor bolt. Make the ghost attatched to the wheel with a winch and now it should spin with the wheel. To make it go up and down more, tweak the winch to do so. I would also recomend viewing all the tutorials first though (if you haven't already) | 2009-03-16 08:50:00 Author: S-A-S--G-U-N-R Posts: 1606 |
Ghost is correct, set the piston to 0 minimum length. That makes it invisible. | 2009-03-16 09:24:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
Dynashock I think really hits on the best suggestion with the idea of thin material. You have 3 layers of thick to choose from... I would suggest using the back layer as your mechanics layer (and if you want to do what SASGUNR suggested and make their pattens look more complex, you might want to have your thin back layer as your support layer, and the first thick layer as your wheel layer. What Dynashock is talking about is that you can glue layers together, and you can place a thin layer between them and it won't impeed their motion. so if you have a piston attached to a block on the far layer, and you glue another block to that so that both the first and second layers will go up and down, then you put a thin layer between the first and second layers, the middle layer will still go up and down (because it is still attached to the first layer even though you can no longer see the first layer). This way, you can hide all your mechanics, and no one will be the wiser. You can make piston go invisible by setting it to zero, but it might not be the flight path you want it to take, and on top of that, you still can see the connection joint. I personally wish they just would add an option in the tweeking menu to have things like that invisible (like they do with radios and switches). | 2009-03-16 16:09:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
I personally wish they just would add an option in the tweak menu to have things like that invisible (like they do with radios and switches). Sigh. Yes that. | 2009-03-16 16:35:00 Author: Boogaloo Posts: 254 |
I really appreciate all your input. Thanks. I'll have a play (as you do). N. | 2009-03-17 00:14:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
dobi6 - I think another graphic is called for. I have opted for the wheel/winch method but completely fail to see how you can hide the winch by gluing different layers (with thin air in between) together. Its either been a very long day or I plain don't get it (and believe me I've tried). N. | 2009-03-18 05:35:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
Ok.. let me see about making a level for you to show it to you. | 2009-03-18 07:40:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
Ok, I published a level called "Ghost Example" Just look up my psn: dobi6 and you should see it. Note... I did not spend a ton of time on the ghosts, so they don't necessarily have to look that bad. Also, I made the lethal layers 2 levels thick, which makes it easier to see a little reality behind them. You could always make the the support blocks smaller, or make the ghost bigger, or make the lethal layer only one level thick... It was just meant as an example. I included item bubbles, but you can also copy the level to your moon to look around in it. | 2009-03-18 16:48:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
Many thanks. I'll go take a look. N. EDIT (a little later): It looks like you forgot to set the copy flag - N. | 2009-03-18 17:04:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
oops. i will in i bit. sorry | 2009-03-18 17:24:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
Ok, it is copy-able... It is funny that it is actually getting plays. The items are crappy too. They are just meant to help you get an idea for what you can do. | 2009-03-18 18:05:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
Yeah - my levels are just example works in progress and are combination locked so I can share them privately with an online friend, and they've both had loads of hits. | 2009-03-18 22:13:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
Anyway, did they help? I know they were a bit ****y. I built the level in a half hour before going to work. But they were intended as a proof of concept for you to see what I was trying to illustrate. | 2009-03-19 05:01:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
That was very useful - thanks. I have been able to progress quite a bit. N. | 2009-03-19 05:05:00 Author: neilj99 Posts: 38 |
Awesome... Building this was really helpful to me too with the level I am working on (and almost done with) - so thanks! | 2009-03-19 05:09:00 Author: dobi6 Posts: 359 |
