Glider Race

Archive: 16 posts

The rules are simple. You grab one of the two gliders from the starting platform and jump off to glide all the way to the end.

This level is mostly a tech demonstration of virtual "wind" being generated by a couple of machines on the ground. I think it gives a fairly believable effect, but causes the level to lag a bit.

Enjoy.

Are you emiting invisible rubber?

That I am. Thin triangles of it being emitted at 0.1 frequency with 0.5 lifetime. I actually got the idea from another thread here and have been tweaking it to make it less thermo-consuming and laggy... still working out the kinks.

Tried it last night - really cool idea. I would have no clue how to set that up. Once I knew what was driving the "wind" it made me appreciate the level all the more. It's visually very clean but the real value of this level (imo) is that you invented wind!

Only downside I think is the average player won't understand what it took to make it work like that. Shame really.

Hey, thanks a lot.

I don't really mind if players don't understand how it works, as long as they get a nice little glider ride lol. I just wanted to show what's possible to do with the LBP engine.

You should have a video up here of this!

I don't have a way to record video (I really wish I did, I want to record Create mode a lot), but I'll try to get some images up now that I've figured out how to easily get them from the PS3 to my laptop.

EDIT : Here's some pictures from Create mode to help you get a better understanding.

in order to save on thermo, would it be possible to do this with pistons?

another idea... if you make the glider have a piston, which extends far below, with a mag key set to directional, pushing the piston out, with a minimum of 0, attached to a long flat piece...

like this:

.................(>
..................|
..................|
...............__|__

then you could shot the items at a 0.1 and high speed, and significantly reduce the lifespan of each particle, making less particles be emitted at one time. i'm not certain how this would affect the balance however, but i'm sure there is ways around that as well.

come to think of it... depending on the strength of the piston, it might even act as a buffer, making the ride smoother as well...

I find that it really looks its best when played with two players. Having two Sackboys realistically gliding side by side is kind of poetic.

Edit : Added a video to the main post. Thanks a lot talmasca!

I'm thinking of using the invisible rubber on a level I'm working on now and was wondering if you emit a bunch of the stuff at Sackboy - does it provide "resistance" without squishing him? Also I've seen levels where when they propel stuff with rubber it makes a thunk noise when it hits another material - I don't recall your wind making any noise. Is it the size that keeps it from thunking or did you have to do something special to the glider? Sorry if those are sort of noob questions but I haven't played around with this kind of stuff yet.2009-04-03 02:22:00

You can emit "thick" pieces of rubber the same way to make Sackboy fly. I have such a device in one of my experimentation levels. It doesn't squish Sackboy AFAIK, I think it's because the pieces are too small for that.

As for the thunking sound, the sound comes from the material being hit by the rubber. Most materials have a default impact sound (metal makes metallic sounds etc) but if you put a sound object and set it to trigger on impact, it will replace the default sound.

The reason the gliders don't make annoying sounds is because there's a sound object on it set to play "wind" sounds on impact, you can see it on the glider close-up picture just next to the camera zone.
