Double Jumping System! *Mm Favourited* *Collectable*
Archive: 96 posts
Right, here goes: I started a thread in the projects section about making a double jump system. The premise was that you jump, then jump again to clear bigger obstacles. Well, I've made a tech demo. It is not a collectable object YET, but it may be eventually. NOW COLLECTABLE. It shows that you can double jump by jumping at the peak of your first jump, and how this lets you clear taller obstacles. The level's details are: Name: Double jump tech demo Author: dawesbr Location: UK Description: This is a tech demo for a double jumping system! Comments?! EDIT: Thanks to Shermzor for the video NB: He forgot to mention it is in the UK YouTube - LBP - Double Jump Invention EDIT2: Mm on YouTube favourited this video! EDIT3: Now in an object bubble! | 2009-03-14 11:29:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Going to play now. GREAT STUFF! A lot of practical uses. Could it be a tad more attentive though? | 2009-03-14 16:37:00 Author: Unknown User |
Yeah I'm still working out the kinks. I have school work right now, but I'm going to try and get it polished off soon. I'm also going to build it into a level of "techniques": Rope walking, light-beam-travelling, double jumping, etc. | 2009-03-14 18:32:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Played this today, and it was brilliant I love how you have to time the jump perfectly at the top (as it is in games) Spectacular. You really should make a simple level with this "We can't get over, Sackboy, save us! You need to master the art of the double jump..." Or something cheesey like that | 2009-03-15 00:28:00 Author: Pinchanzee Posts: 805 |
...I think it may be an art of the ninja-stylee. EDIT: With a boss that you need double jump for, of course. | 2009-03-15 08:46:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Dude! wow... I couldn't believe it would work that good! O_0 It's totally awesome man Although it's still possible to bump your head against the platform :/ | 2009-03-15 09:23:00 Author: Yarbone Posts: 3036 |
I know, that's one of the problems I'm working on fixing. It's the timer for the spawning. I think if I set it to "flipper" it may work. | 2009-03-15 09:58:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
This is a really cool idea and it seems to work pretty well, much better than I thought it would. - However, you really should slow down that piston that moves it left to right so it's not jumping all over the place like it is now. | 2009-03-15 22:01:00 Author: Coreymill Posts: 85 |
Yeah, I tried it out like that, but it became too slow for running-double-jumps. | 2009-03-15 22:09:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Yeah, I tried it out like that, but it became too slow for running-double-jumps. Hmmm ... okay. Well as long as it's hidden in the level when you use it, then it would be fine. It's just that in the demo you have it showing so something like this matters then, but won't if it's 'off screen'. | 2009-03-15 22:56:00 Author: Coreymill Posts: 85 |
It will still be on-screen unless I change the system around a bit... | 2009-03-15 23:07:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
i tried it but ps3 crashed =( still it was very cool and i cant believe its not real butter, i mean... i cant believe it worked! | 2009-03-16 01:13:00 Author: Zommy Posts: 1232 |
Really impressive, I never expected this. | 2009-03-16 01:28:00 Author: Wonko the Sane Posts: 109 |
It has a lot of potential. Who knows, if it gets noticed by MM, you might recieve a Prize Crown. | 2009-03-16 02:38:00 Author: Sackdragon Posts: 427 |
Thanks for the comments guys. I thought the crowns were only for competitions? | 2009-03-16 07:35:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
I thought the crowns were only for competitions? Ways to get a crown. #1 ? A ?Gold Star? on the LittleBigWorkshop Frequently, when we?re on LittleBigWorkshop.com, every so often, we come across a submission, whether it is an inspiration, workshop or forum post that makes us smile. As a small token of our appreciation, we like to put a smile on your face too by giving you a Community Prize Crown. #2 ? Raising our Eyebrows Every once in awhile, LBP fans do something that immediately grabs the attention of a few people, spreads on the web, and eventually is talking about it. We love it when this happens, and as a sign of thanks, you may just get a Community Prize Crown in your mail box. #3 ? LittleBigChallenges We?re in the process of coming up with more LittleBigChallenges, so get your creative thoughts together and stay tuned next week for LittleBigChallenge2. | 2009-03-16 07:45:00 Author: Coreymill Posts: 85 |
Hehe, should I start spreading it on the workshop etc.? | 2009-03-16 18:44:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
go for it! i really hope you get crowned. you deserve it after making this | 2009-03-16 18:49:00 Author: Zommy Posts: 1232 |
Wait so is it a proper double jump or is it an object that you then jump on which pops you again? My PS3 is down but if I can't get it working can someone post a video? | 2009-03-16 18:54:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
Shermzor, I can't video it, but all it is is you jump, and at the peak of your jump, you can jump again (sackboy even gives a little twitch to signify you can xD). The way it works (as explained earlier) is that when you jump, you leave a sackboy sensor's radius, causing an emitter to spawn an invisible piece of dark matter beneath your feet. If you don't jump, it is set to destroy the dark matter after 0.1 seconds - coincidentally, around the time you spend not going up nor down in a jump (ie at the peak). Making it seamless. | 2009-03-16 19:10:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Thanks but I managed to get my PS3 to run just for that level I take it since you've made how to do it public on my video for Youtube I can include it? (I'd worked it out without looking so I'm still clever :arg: ). Definitely a great piece of work and with a bit of alteration (to make it go to different heights when following the player) it could be implemented into all levels. Hearted the level but I forgot to heart you >< I'm putting in a note in the video for everyone to heart you | 2009-03-16 19:13:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
Hehe thanks. By "I take it since you've made how to do it public on my video for Youtube I can include it?" do you mean you're going to video it? And if so, don't explain it please at least, not in full? | 2009-03-16 19:18:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Ok I'll edit the explanation out | 2009-03-16 19:22:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

Could you PM me your idea? I won't have a chance to PS3 right now, so I can't copyable-ise it, but I do want to hear your idea. In case I've already hit upon it, is it that you have the platform be one-layer thick so you have it on the front layer, can double jump up to the next layer and use a different slider (for longevity and versatility) | 2009-03-16 20:18:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Cool And Shermzor, I just noticed your location. That's cool - I have work experience next year, and would love to go to a game developers eg Lionhead or Mm to see what it is like. On-topic, any ideas for a 2-dimensional instead of horizontal slider? | 2009-03-16 20:22:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

I didn't want to bump that thread, but: 1) "2 Three-way switches controled by wenches" (from video)---Yarrr! Wenches! 2) It rotated as it moved (the problem I've always had with making these) which would destroy the double jump And Shermzor, with our idea will take over LBP! | 2009-03-16 20:35:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
YouTube - LBP - How to Double Jump Video voila! Another suggestion for making it follow ramps would be to create a fresh one at each flat area or have a creature with a brain following a track with ramps etc. so it would always be the right height (well mostly). At the end of the day you'll have to dumb down your levels but they'll be better than just one constant line. | 2009-03-16 20:40:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

This object currently has an awesome rating of 6 awesomes. Once again, thanks for the comments. It doesn't seem to be going down well at the workshop :S That guy in the thread sounds like a complete 'moss rot'. I mean "I guy said stupid ideas like the whole level moving down, which also as he said would make no sense..." well duh, I said it wouldn't work in my video it is just the only thing that I could see to do it other than the way it is done; some person was bound to genuinely think that the level moved so I proved it wrong before that. It's also what some people have made already with 'teleportation' rather than proper teleporting (off topic I suppose). Also swaggering in with "clearly emits an invisible platform at the pinnicale of your first jump" well if it's invisible then it's not clear, how else are you meant to hide it? A sign saying "Platformz aren't here kek!". Sure if you're bright and worked it out you can say that but you don't say 'oh it's obvious' or in this case 'it's clearly'. I hope no-one agrees with his view of your invention being average, and if he starts saying 'oh no I wasn't offending anyone' then he better go straight back to foetus form and learn about tone of language and arrogance. {Been teaching little kids how to cook army rations so I'm still a bit heated} Edit: Plus he's a **** H4H'er !!!! http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=promozone&message.id=18471#M18471 | 2009-03-17 18:43:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
RAGE! Seriously, nice rant. Also, by "little kids" d'you mean 14-15 y/o (my year)? Everyone who does army in my year complains about the rations. In fact, they went on an army exped, 1 expulsion for drugs, 1 suspension for alchohol+illegal knife, 1 sent home for cigarettes. How dumb do you get to take drugs, alchohol, an illegal knife, or cigarettes to an ARMY expedition! And the army is supposed to instill discipline! Anyway, no chance to update it tonight ;_; | 2009-03-17 19:09:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

i think so i now how it works...i can see an emitter on the video so i think when u jump out of the radius of the sensor which ubove the emitter it emits an in visible platform for about 2 or 3 mili seconds which u jump of | 2009-03-18 16:25:00 Author: Dan_Westy Posts: 41 |
Dan, I posted the explanation on post #20. dkjestrup, I'm probably the youngest. 16th July, 1995. 13 and 8 months 01philip01 is 13 as well, he may be younger than me | 2009-03-18 20:20:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
This is very neat Good job Just tried its quite nice, although the invisible blocks can emit too quickly and actually push sackboy down, and one other thing is it only works on the first layer, Thats all | 2009-03-19 11:49:00 Author: Defaultsound Posts: 137 |
It should work on all layers; I think you got the jumping wrong. I tested it and it does work on all layers for me. When integrated into a level, different systems will work on different layers, but for now it IS multi-layer. | 2009-03-19 19:39:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |

Cor, that is superb. I haven't been on LBP in a while and quite frankly I didn't plan to change that. This just made me turn on my Ps3 and play it, it's just such a brilliant idea. | 2009-03-20 16:53:00 Author: Bear Posts: 2079 |

Someone on youtube said something along the lines of 'That's not double jump, it's jump jumping off dark matter' "Retard". Deleted the comment; some people just don't seem to grasp that you can't actually double jump However you can 'super jump', but that's more a glitch. | 2009-03-23 19:51:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
Super jump? Tell me more | 2009-03-23 21:16:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Super jump? Tell me more Basically a jump that's about 2 squares high (essentially a double jump mashed into one). On the cool levels there's one with release dates and you might see a pic of me above the area you should be able to reach, this is because I hyper/super jumped up (I'm dressed as a serial killer in the pic ). Don't want to reveal it until I'm 100% sure it works on every level (though I've managed to abuse some MM levels with it ) | 2009-03-23 21:41:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

I'm going to guess it's something to do with pausing the game? Ooooo No It involves the positioning of a sackboy. Edit: Yep I'm right, it's about a 1.8 jump, not quite 2 unless you get it dead on. Have to balance on the edge of a perfect right angle and then jump off; if you keep trying eventually you'll notice some of the jumps are much higher, then you can perfect it. | 2009-03-23 22:23:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

That has happened to me a lot before by fluke. I thought it was because of a tiny gap. Yeah it helps if the gap is less than 1 large grid block. However if it's too close you can't fall enough to boost up. | 2009-03-23 23:07:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

Just saw the video from killian and searched this thread. Nice work, your work is very inspiring. I never thought of doing anything that is triggerd by a player LEAVING an area. With multiple sensors you could even create a tripple and mor jumps. The only point of failure is more than one player. | 2009-03-26 10:44:00 Author: Fjonan Posts: 359 |
Video from killian? Huh? I know about the multi-player glitch, but there is NO fix I can think of. | 2009-03-26 19:15:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Be on the outlook for an object demonstration I will publish in the near feature. It features the double jump system (of course you will be appropriately credited, dawesbr!). The double jump system is not the centerpiece, but it's the most perfect solution imaginable to a nasty piece gameplay-mechanic that has been driving me maaaad for months. I owe you one dawesbr. In a good way, no? | 2009-05-04 20:56:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
STOP JINXING ME! And moley, that hurt me deep ;_; It's probably true though. She had to do voice overs and everything. Perhaps if you found a way to utilise it in a level they might be more impressed... | 2009-05-04 20:58:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |
I think you should make a level with it integrated and maybe even that special idea I had *wink wink*. | 2009-05-04 20:59:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
moley, they're hardly comparable in any case. There's no need to go raining on my parade - I'm proud of how this has turned out. I, unfortunately, barely get any go******** time on LBP any more what with school, homework, my brothers going on it all the time, and...other...issues, so this actually took up a helluva lot of relative time. I don't expect a crown - I've seen better community submissions (and I actually love xkappax's animation, it is probably better than mine). I probably wouldn't even be able to enjoy it anyway, with my limited playtime. But ******, a man can dream. | 2009-05-04 21:05:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
MM favourited my remix too, although I really don't think I'm getting a crown for it. She did put A LOT of effort into that animation. | 2009-05-04 21:08:00 Author: DanC Posts: 433 |

I think it is an amazing contraption, but it is still quite small scale. It could be used in many different ways but none are shown. You could have some really high thing to jump over and stuff like that. You just need to show how it will benefit people. I think that would probably get you a crown. | 2009-05-04 22:11:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |
this is really awesome but itd be even cooler if you made a level around it... but that tech demo on lbp is really a must try! | 2009-05-06 17:07:00 Author: Recurracy Posts: 166 |
Thanks for the comment, Recurracy! Just to let you all know, it is now in an object bubble in the level! | 2009-05-09 18:55:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Yay! I can finally check it out! Thanks! | 2009-05-10 02:20:00 Author: StrayFelisCatus Posts: 178 |
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!! FINALLY this is an item! | 2009-05-10 02:24:00 Author: johnrulz77 Posts: 835 |
Yeah guys, sorry about that. I FINALLY got round to it - the times I've been on LBP recently have been a bit rushed, and I never really got round to doing it. Eventually, when some guy kept trying to invite me into his game (causing me to accidentally leave several levels, including a record score on Tye Dye!), and sending me tonnes of messages, I caved in. Just a note - for the emitter, you may want to change the blocks emitted to single or double layers to suit your purposes. | 2009-05-10 08:41:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
