LBP: Standard Definition TVs

Archive: 15 posts

Hi All,

I've got a question, I'm wondering if anyone can answer. I play and make levels for LBP on a HD screen. SD screens have a different aspect ratio than HD screens. I was wondering how the game outputs on a SD screen. Do you have black bars on the top and bottom or does the image fill the whole screen?

The reason I'm asking, is because I'm trying to figure out if I should keep the action outside the left and right sides of the screen in case people playing on SDTVs have those areas cropped.

This is incorrect. There is a large difference between the aspect ratio of a hdtv and a sdtv.

HDTVs are wider than SDTVs. If you take a HDTV that is the same height as a SDTV the SDTV will only be 75% as wide. If LBP does pan and scan instead of letter box that means people with HDTVs need to account for SDTV players not being able to see one quarter of the screen (one eighth on the right and one eighth on the left).

This is very important information for LBP creators trying to design levels. If LBP does pan and scan, then creators need to keep in mind that some players will be able to see the left and right hand sides of the screen and others cannot.

I have a 32" SD TV (for now). I see a 1 inch black bar at the top and bottom of the screen. I also believe that part of the left and right are cropped away because when I play with other people, I sometimes don't see their chat bubbles completely if they are outside of the screen (or dead).2009-03-13 23:18:00

I have a SD TV as well, and I have no black bars. If you want someone to test your levels on a SD screen, I can do that for you if you like and tell you if there is any trouble. For the most part I have not had any problems playing LBP at all, and I have not played it on a HD TV so I don't know how much is cropped and if at all.

I have noticed it as well with the chat bubbles, but thought until now that it was just the location of the bubbles. If they are normally displayed completely on a HD TV then the sides are cropped quite a bit.

i brought my ps3 to someone house that had the tv with differnt aspect ratio and it cuts the left and right side out (one of my levels had a fiixed camera and couldn't see all the way to the edge). we had set the aspect ratio in the ps3 video settings to match his tv. I dont know but later i thought maybe changing the video aspect ratio output settings in the ps3 menu to the widescreen setting(eventhough it was not a wide screen) might squeeze the picture on to the screen or put the bars on top and bottom so you could see everything that was ment to be seen by the creater. I cant test this idea becuase i dont have a tv like that, but maybe someone could try that2009-03-14 00:45:00

Wow. This is something I never considered. I do all my creating in wide screen HD. Never thought how it might play on SD. I often set my camera angles to maximize the viewing screen.

Hmmm...

LBP doesn't do "letterboxed 4:3". This means you can consider they aren't seeing the left and right end side of what you see in 16:9.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems we've pretty much got this sorted out and that most people with SDTVs get the left and right sides cut off. I'll keep this in mind when designing levels (especially with camera zones). Playtesting with some people who have hdtvs and some people with sdtvs also sounds like a great idea.

Thanks!

well, keep in mind one can "zoom in/out" the screeen in the display seetings in the pause manu (Screen Size)
I have an SD tv, yet if i completly zoom out the screen i can see the black bars at the bottom and top of the sreen. Yet i prefer to Zoom the screen in a bit or i can barely read any ingame stuff.(Of course my eyesight is weak so i don't know about others)
Anyways, maybe some of the SD tv users had the screen Zoomed in as well

I have an SD tv and it works fine! LBP isn't really one of those games that needs graphics (like FPS, uncharted, racing games etc.)2009-03-15 06:25:00

That's good info Silverleon. Thanks!

To dkjestrup: We're not discussing resolution, we are discussing cropping.

D'oh!! I never knew that! I used to play LBP on my massive 96" screen (god, I love projectors), but since it was dying out we went HD. Would have been really useful to know that. LBP transmits the viewable area to others when playing online, btw. I used to play with my bud who has a HD TV, and when we got past the left 1/5 of the screen, the timer would start counting for him... even tho on HIS screen there was plenty of screen space left. I bet changing the screen size would have remedied that. lol, oh well. Let bygones be bygones I suppose. 2009-03-16 05:33:00
