New Level (series) - Below the Root - RPG

Archive: 9 posts

Hello everyone. It has been a while since I published a level... that's because this latest level was painstakingly detailed. A lot of you won't remember the original 1984 Commadore 64 platformer Below the Root. This was a big hit game back then and I decided to make a LBP version of it. My level (like the original) is a RPG/platformer called BELOW THE ROOT - Chapter 1 : Green-Sky. It has many great things and tricks as well as gorgeous visuals, sound, story, and fun factor. I don't want to spoil anything for you but know that I intend to make this an extended series (probably 8-10 chapters). It took me 2 weeks to do this one (that includes 3 days of continuous playtesting). So I've published it and am anxious for critisism. Hopefully some or all of you will enjoy it! I posted this at a bad time obviously, so here goes again. Please try my level... the last level I made wouldn't load for people so I am suffering HUGE withrdawal when it comes to people trying my levels. I should point out that the level isn't completely RPG. There are pleanty of platforming elements. And who can resist a treetop village? The level is FULL of surprises and managed to get the therm. almost all the way to the top of the bar without glitches (hard to do). It has lots of bouncers, swings, point bubbles, and maybe a trick or two that hasn't been done on other levels yet. It has been EXTENSIVELY playtested and there are NO PROBLEMS. I dare you to find a glitch. The level has good flow and is fully multi-player compatable. In fact, there is a mini pinball-like game in the middle of the level that is a blast to play, especially with multiplayer. So PLEASE TRY THIS LEVEL. Much time and effort was put into it and I help others on this site where and when I can. I'll be playing your guys levels this weekend with my wife, so let me know if you want your level played and what level you want played. Thx in advance.2009-03-13 17:21:00

You may have submitted at a bad time, but there are a couple other reasons that people probably haven't played the level yet.

- One is that you aren't doing F4F on your level. When people will get feedback on their level in return they are much more likely to give your level a try.

- The other is that you have no visuals of your level in the post. If you have a couple pictures of your level, or a video then people are also more likely to play the level ... especially if they think your level looks interesting.

= Anyway, I did play your level yesterday, but only once. And when I played, I didn't get very far. I got to the part where the guy said that he wanted his ring or whatever. So I went up and found it and pushed it off to the left. However, this just made me fall into some gas and the ring was gone and didn't come back. So I couldn't do anything after that. I will try it again some time later.

there are NO PROBLEMS. I dare you to find a glitch.
To me, this is a 'glitch'. There is nothing that suggests going left will not allow me to make it back down. You should either have the ring respawn if it falls off the edge like that, or block the path to the left to force the player to take it back from where they came.

Anyway, like I said I will play through it again when I have the time. Because other then that problem the level seemed fun and had nice visuals.

Thanks for checking it out Coreymill. Yes I forgot to check if the ring could go left there. I will fix. I really did playtest over and over but I'm sure you are well aware of how much playtesting is required for every user created level.
That ring was the ONE quest object I didn't have appear by an emitter.

I am glad to hear about any problems as I want this series to be as perfect as possible.

I will take pics tonight and get them up by tomorrow. Will try to take video and post on youtube, though I'm not sure how long of a video clip my wife's camera takes. I will add you as a friend and play/critique your level(s) with my wife on Sunday-Tuesday (her 3 days off).

And if and when you try the rest of the level or series, I'ld love to know your thoughts.

You probably should refrain from bumping, just edit your post. I'll try to remember to play this. Maybe check out my level in the Projects forum: The legend of Maui: Land of the Long White Cloud. Please post some feedback there. You will need to follow the instructions there to play anyway. Could you comment on the gameplay and music, btw.2009-03-14 07:52:00

Thanks for the advise on bumping. I will remember to check your project The Legend of Maui :Land of the Long White Cloud and play it with my wife sometime over the next 3 days, and will comment re: gameplay and music and other stuff. Hope your level's fun.

Well, I tried to play through your level again. However, I didn't have a lot of time but I didn't think it would take that long to make it through the level.

- Just wow, there's a LOT of exploring and things to do in this level. I had to play it for at least 15-20 minutes and still didn't finish it. So, if there is someone out there that really likes a level that takes awhile to beat and exploration this is a good one. It also has some good visuals. I really liked the interiors of the tree houses and the area to the left after you went down the elevator, I don't remember what it was called. But you had to get three items to move on from it.

- However, I still did have a problem with the ring the first time I played this level again. You can't push it left anymore, but I pushed it off to the right and let go of it on the way down. They it landed on the slant and rolled off to the left. This cause it to get stuck down there and I couldn't get it back up to the guy and had to start over again. So I would say either make it so you can get it back up, or make the trigger radius a bit larger so if you do just drop if off the edge it still activates.

Thanks for trying it again Corymill (I'll be taking pics of the level today, hopefully)

The part with the ring getting stuck down below: this happened to me and my wife when we playtested together and we (or maybe it was just she) was able to lift the ring back up to the elevator operators house. But, if it DID require 2 sackers (sackpersons) to get the ring back up then by all means, I will adjust it today. Another thing I could do to fix it would be to just increase the radius of the trigger (which I might have to do, as the twig that needs adjusting might be so set in its ways now that it cannot be edited).
