Jumper: The Red Zone (beware this is challenging and ADICTIVE) ***VIDEO ADDE*******
Archive: 21 posts
psn: deboerdave Hi everyone, Check out my new level "Jumper: The Red Zone". This is an auto sidescrolling level that should keep you coming back for more. It is has simple game play mechanics: just jump and grab and make it to the scoreboard at the end, but if you hit the edges of the screen you will be toast. Keep a look out for materials colored in RED, anything colored in RED will activate bonus points or bonus sections. Can you beat it? I hope so but if you do, up the challenge by trying to activate all the bonus RED section/points. Keep you ears open too as i have implemented my own custom music track. --enjoy Inovative Features: -sidescrolling -custom music video(Hit HQ button for better viewing. Just used my digital camera to make it so it isnt very high quaity video): <object width="660" height="525"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/63101gyFmUg&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/63101gyFmUg&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="660" height="525"></embed></object> | 2009-03-10 18:45:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
I played this level just a little while ago. I have to say it's really cool! I love the side-scrolling gameplay, the background and the secret sections. I can't get very far on it at all though. I will probably keep trying this level as it's very fun. I'll get far eventually! | 2009-03-10 19:32:00 Author: lk9988 Posts: 1077 |
I played this yesterday. A very fun and challenging level with lots of replay-value!! The first thing that grabbed my attention was the red electric background. Nice work on that one. Very...trippy After I played your level, the first thing I did was to try and recreate the background myself in create mode | 2009-03-10 19:42:00 Author: Zwollie Posts: 2173 |
I played this yesterday. A very fun and challenging level with lots of replay-value!! The first thing that grabbed my attention was the red electric background. Nice work on that one. Very...trippy After I played your level, the first thing I did was to try and recreate the background myself in create mode did you figure out how to do the background? I was orignially planning a different background and had it about halfway, then i was just playing around with stuff and decided to see how big you can make a plasma ball. Turns out you can make them pretty dam big. So then i started messing with the color of the plasma and thought this would make a sweet background for my level. So i scratched my other background and it ended up taking two plasma balls to cover my level. The plasma balls cant intersect eachother so i had to use two layers to make my background. You can see the line of the second plasma ball when you get to the spinning wheels after the raising platforms. | 2009-03-11 22:34:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
Yeah, I eventually figured out it was a plasma ball after I couldn't make the same background with just an electric wall. I first tried to recreate a version of the background by making an electric wall, putting glass in front of it in a thin layer and then putting a red sticker on it. It had sort of the same vibe but even though it looked red, I couldn't get rid of the blue glow. After scratching my head for 2 hours, I figured it out... It's extremely simple once you figure it out but it remains a very cool idea and something I hadn't seen anywhere else before. | 2009-03-11 22:45:00 Author: Zwollie Posts: 2173 |
Hey man, I saw your post in the music competition, which I'm entering too I was listening to you loop dub level, its pretty funky. I'm doing a loop based one for the contest too. I checked out the prototype level for this first. Really liked the mechanics but thought it was kinda lazy with all the dark matter... but then noticed this level. I'm happy with what you've done with the background and the tweaks on the scrolling barrier. I didn't get around to completing it just yet, but I'll have to come back to it. The best aspect of this is the bonus areas. Its already got so much platforming momentum, but when you string together a bunch of bonus jumps its really thrilling. Also its nice to see people making their own music and putting it in their levels! Great job deboerdave! | 2009-03-11 22:57:00 Author: Pitcard Posts: 779 |

Wow, nice score challenge, this one... the difficulty will probably keep most away (actually, I myself thought that if this keeps escalating like this, I won't be able to finish it either, but then I saw the scoreboard ), but for the ones that stick around, maxing out the score on this very tricky (hidden) score bubble course is going to be a lot of fun. I'll surely play it some more, I need to find out what that red switch about halfway through does, I was lazy to jump up there and wanted to finish the level properly first. | 2009-03-12 22:50:00 Author: sny Posts: 144 |
Sny is a sucker for punishment... I've seen how you eat score challenges for breakfast. | 2009-03-13 02:38:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
This level is pretty cool! It's a tad on the difficult side for me, but I can appreciate the challenge that it presents to more hardcore LBP players. I loved your custom soundtrack, very addictive as was the rest of the level. I also thought it was pretty cool how you added in the extra point paths for the more skilled players to go for. I didn't get very far, but I'll be back to try again! | 2009-03-13 03:28:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
Sny is a sucker for punishment... I've seen how you eat score challenges for breakfast. It's true, I can't help it! I wub those score bubbles. I'm actually torn between working on my next level and playing Asteroid! Pinball and this level, and I have very limited playtime the next few days. | 2009-03-13 22:01:00 Author: sny Posts: 144 |

NinjaMicWZ and I posted an 13K score, getting a big combo near the begining of the level. One of us died but i see an area further along where i think team work and timing could string together another combo that 1 player cant do. thanks for everyone thats checked it out. I did get a lot of feedback about being to hard, but i just cant come to make a level that i can just walk through first try. So glad there are people like me that like to be challenged. | 2009-03-15 20:10:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
Bumped for awesomeness - Spent an hour on this last night and can't get the music outta my head!!!! If I close my eyes, all I can see is red lightning!!!!!! Currently ranked 24th!!!!!! aarrrrrghhhhhhh!!!! | 2009-03-18 01:22:00 Author: parsonetti Posts: 16 |
Oh yeah, the music was awesome! The gameplay addicting and fun. I toyed around a bit with it last week when the "prototype" was up on the pages. Nice job on polishing it up. I was playing with one other person and we tried it about 7 times. For some reason it just made me laugh. Hearted and 5 stars. Will definitely go back and get on the board! | 2009-03-18 03:49:00 Author: Jaeyden Posts: 564 |
Glad you guys are liking the challenge, and the music. i just added a video of the level (see first post) i broke 11k on it but think i could of beat my high score but i was playing safe on the decent down the moving platforms and didnt try to combo any of them. just wanted to get a video hitting all the bonus switches, i did it and ended up with my second best run. enjoy | 2009-03-20 22:56:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |

i enjoyed this level but i liked the how to get music to follow demo level better, it has helped loads for my new level, cheers ^_^ plus that silent hill style piano tune was awesome, really enjoyed it and gave it 5 stars, very helpful | 2009-03-24 11:03:00 Author: talmasca Posts: 196 |
i enjoyed this level but i liked the how to get music to follow demo level better, it has helped loads for my new level, cheers ^_^ plus that silent hill style piano tune was awesome, really enjoyed it and gave it 5 stars, very helpful Thanks and i got a new Jumper level out now that i use that piano song in. It called Jumper: The Blue Zone. I think its a easier than red zone (if you dont go for big score), but i think the spring section is holding people up (average players arent so good on springy stuff) I probably put a thread up for it once i do a video so people can have an idea of how long the level is (relatively short like this one, since its a one life one try thing again) and insight on how to go for combos, as well as technique on how to get through it. Been lazy to make that video though. anyways i digressed if your doing the music follow thing would like to see how it turns out when its ready. If you set up as i did in the music follows demo be sure to check for dieing and losing the music when going back to a check point. it doesnt always happen but by optimising the timing/speed of your pistons you can sometimes overcome the problem, otherwise let me know i have been working on a solution (not perfected but good for some situations) | 2009-03-25 03:42:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
kool ill let u know when i make it ^_^ btw on ur jumber level i kept dying at the bit where theres an oval on a loose bolt, i couldnt swing onto the next ledge in time bfore getting gassed :S maybe others stuck there 2? | 2009-03-25 16:47:00 Author: talmasca Posts: 196 |
hey talmasca that part you are getting stuck on with the swingy oval that goes over to the spinners. Try grabbing it as soon as possible when it comes into screen (but not too soon you might hit your head jumping on the gas box above) then make sure you adjust your self to the bottom of it before you start swinging. I usually grab it in the middle when i first land on it so i let go and grab again at the bottom so you u get swing good on it. besure check my video in the first post here for some guidence on technique. I always try to get to the bottom of grabble stuff when it a swinging thing, but i notice through playig on line some people dont really try to adjust there grip and sometimes it cost them there sack | 2009-03-25 19:19:00 Author: deboerdave Posts: 384 |
Sorry, I thought I already put this here - but yeah I guess I didn't I suck! Anyway, this is still my highest rated level so far on these boards. I think I might have Metal Gear Karas higher on gamefaqs boards, but it was a completely scale. Anyway, here's your review! Did the feedback help at all? Jumper: The Red Zone PSN: deboerdave Gameplay (9/10): Ok, the bad stuff first. No bad guys, no story, no boss. Ok, now the good stuff. The level wanted 8 bit side scroller feel, and it achieved it! You must keep up with the moving screen from beginning to end. This level is amazing, and unique. I see a lot of these will be popping up thanks to the work of this creator, and his tutorial. But this is the first application that I know of, and it's nearly perfect. The platforming is very reminiscent of forced side scrolling Mario levels from back in the day. You could make any of the Mario 3 levels with this technology where you are forced to keep up with the screen. There is a custom sound track, which gets a little repetitive. And it's a bit short, and insanely difficult. In LBP we are so used to being able to die, and you MUST ace this to make it to the end. Some may find it unforgiving, as it took me like 40 tries, taking turns with my gf to make it through. But this is a HUGE plus because I have never been so addicted to a level before. I don't know if I would have kept trying if it was any longer, but there has to be a way in the future to lengthen it with a checkpoint or two. (9/10) Looks (7/10): Very classic couple color look for the 8 bit feel. Almost too basic though. A lot of fun hidden stuff uses the color red, other than that the whole thing is black and somewhat boring. BUT, again this was on purpose, and with the crazy use of plasma balls, there is a sweet looking background from beginning to end. It has a solid look that accompanies the whole theme of the level. (7/10) Other Stuff (10/10): Easily one of the most creative levels out there. I?m sure it will be mimicked over and over? and his ideas will be used by TONS of creators. Replay value is the highest of any level I've played to date. Not just because of the red switches for a higher score, but because you refuse to stop until you beat it the the long way. Level length is medium short. Obviously creativity factor is off the scale. For the intangibles, (10/10) Overall (8.4/10): This level must be played by all. It's that simple. Maybe I fell in love because I?m old and grew up with 8 bit and 16 bit games, but just based on challenge ? I know everyone will want to play this over and over. Good job. (8.4/10) Feedback: -Some intro text explaining the level would be helpful, it just takes off and kills you if you?re not expecting the side scrolling -Great great side scrolling mechanics ? of course you knew that already -some platforms have a thin layer of red under them, they look cool (like the second platform? maybe consider doing this on all of them since the levels looks kind of suffer at the beginning because of the very basic look of the rubber for platforms. (EDIT ? ok, nevermind I figured out that was a secret too, but it would be nice to have some change for the sake of people?s eyes? like how you made moving platforms a different look) -I think the right edge gas could be a little further out front; there were a lot of times I was still in the screen by a couple inches and died towards the right of the screen. Also I noticed this at the top of the screen as well. -I love the background, big plasma balls I assume? Good job, although epileptic people may disagree. -just for aesthetic purposes I would sticker up the entry door with red and put a thin layer in front of the bottoms of the pistons to the try again letters to hide the bottoms of the pistons from view. -I REALLY love the red ball secret areas, adds a lot of replay value -The trouble with the difficulty is that the custom music, which I really dug at first? gets really annoying after the 10th time through. -Ok, this is like amazing concept, good application, but infinite potential? If you can figure out how to do the anti color glitch this would really be an old school top notch style. Also to make the levels LONGER, look in the object showcase threads for the teleporter pods thread. You could use this glich of crushing spawn points as they go out of the screen and emitting new spawn points, and have the screen slow down for a bit to add check points and lengthen your future levels. Just a thought. -Great job, made me play it like 40+ times to beat it? most I've ever played a level. PS - feel free to request reviews on any new levels, since it's a random number generator, you can get reviewed right away... if you're lucky enough! | 2009-04-04 20:07:00 Author: LuckyShot Posts: 713 |
