SA vs "Gelulupas"

Archive: 1 post

If anyone is curious about the title, allow me to explain.
This review will be the first of what I hope is many boss battle challenges to be presented for my humble corner. These reviews, while being reviews, are styled somewhat differently in that I will not spend time pointing out spelling errors and appearance flaws (unless the need for such is incredibly desperate) but instead focus more on the main stage performer AKA the boss. I will critique on things more relevant, like the attack and defense, general movement (if any), and overall presentation, and to another degree the challenge factor. As with all reviews, I finish up with a final score, but instead of having an extra quirp I will instead announce who won between me and the boss. Anyways, let's talk about Gelulupas.

Bassdeluxe has whipped up a monster from the origins of Monster Hunter, a PS2 game from ages past that was designed to be a take on Phantasy Star Online, only with a greater degree of equipment customization. While the series never made it huge in America, I do know that it's all the rage in Japan. Excellent game overall, with plenty of depth and raw/cooked animal meat to sink your teeth into.

Gelulupas is the first boss of what might be a string of bosses created by bassdeluxe, and from what this battle was like, I can honestly expect good things to come from the future.

The arena has a series of platforms which act as barriers from skybound attacks, and a long narrow path made of snow sponge block. This battle is obviously fought with the Paintinator, but you may realize that the beast is protected by an outside shield. Getting rid of these involves shooting down 2 shield generators in the walls. Beware though, each one you destroy causes some of your own barriers to be removed as well.

His attack strings mostly consist of the following:
Aerial Raid - G will teleport randomly while shooting plasma shots from above in quick succession. Although the bullets are indeed dodge-able, the better option is usually to hide under a barrier.
Avalanche (Full shield only) - Causes a massive downpour of snow. Giant snow sponge blocks will flood the area. Although this isn't harmful, it is possible to be squished or worse pushed off the edge into the lightning.
Aurora Cannon (Partial Shield only) - Sends a blue beam of light going back and forth. When it stops, that area is as good as gone. This attack is a replica of the Metal Gear Rex system.
Psionic Blasts (No Shield) - When he is out of shield, he will shoot massive balls of energy that will kill sackboy. Not to fret though, pick a low spot and you should be fine due to auto-ducking.

The pattern is usually whatever shield ability is applicable, followed immediately by Aerial Raid, and it repeats the process. It should be noted that the initial Aerial Raid does get significantly harder to endure when shields are gone, so stay sharp.

Overall, the boss is designed well, functions well, and has some interesting attack strings. I suppose the only issue is how easy it is to snipe the generators, making it a tad too easy. All in all, the level is fairly solid in it's aspects, and I really hate getting him by random plasma balls, but the level is positive enough that I am willing to disregard the faults.

Final Score:
8.5 / 10
Gelulupas is a slight challenge, fun to mess with, and certainly fun to fight "A" performance overall, although maybe closer to an A- for purposes of having poorly guarded weakpoints.

VICTORY = SHINING AQUAS
Gelulupas was a cinch, didn't even break a sweat. Made #7 for high scores first try.
