Groovin' in the Kitchen - Original Music Level (+photo's of progresssness)

Archive: 17 posts

This started just as an idea funnily enough in the Ideas section.

Since everything was going pretty smoothly I'm gonna make a full level out of it. And hopefully submit this for superBlast's Original Music Contest (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=8966)

This is a musical level set in the Kitchen. It's mostly based around an Oven that produces different music loops. Sackboy's on top of the oven, and can use grab switches to trigger different music loops, and thus string them together making a song!

So far I've built the Oven, along with 5 music loops so here it is...

A closeup of the 5 Switches that spawn the 5 different loops. The different loops spawn inside the oven.

This is a pic of the early stages of this. This is what each loop looks like, beside it are 4 pistons that flick back to the beginning when they reach the end ie playing the music in a loop.

I'm planning to have Loads of Kitchen Appliances to mess around with, each one with its own sound. Like a toaster that pops with a Ting!, a bunch of clangey cutlery, maybe some eggs to roll off of the counter and landing with a crack. All these things are for the player to play with and should contribute to the music.

So I'd love if you guys could come up with some stuff like this to put in to make it a really Tactile and Realistic kitchen! :arg:

Emmmm depends... I'm thinkin of puttin a platforming section at the start. Like the epic Journey to the Oven, from a mouses point of view.

But I should probably publish the oven and a few kitchen things first, as a purely interactive music level. Cause I don't wanna mess with the requirements for the contest >_>

I'd say about a week for the oven and kitchen stuff since I'm finished exams

I'll see howz it gowzzz.

hehehe... you can call me that when I've finished it ;D.... jokin though, cause this has lots of little finiticky bugs that are so annoying to tweak...

There's about a 90% chance of the next loop not spawning... which is such a let down. It's so impossible to get by this with a simple enough fix..

I've added a nice setting and lighting, and have some blinking LED's for the different loops when they're about to spawn. But it was working almost 100% before I added the lights which makes me think that things aren't 100% accurate when it starts to heat up a bit.

Still I'm really happy with the setting! It's like a midnight kitchen, and the mice have come out to cause mischief. I'm definitely gonna release an extended version with platforming through the house as a mouse at night, till you get to the oven and make some funky music

Played it with pitcard the other day. So freakin' awesome. Only suggestion is to add a speed switch! A loop based on animal sounds would be nice as well ;-)2009-03-17 00:28:00

Its good to see people are interested Thanks!

Ye I might add a speed switch. As a dial on the side of the cooker. We'll see.
Animal noises is a great idea.. might do something like that for another level... maybe that should be the theme for my zoo level.

Fix'd! I don't even know what my name means so soz about that. If you're doing another Music Contest I'll be glad to enter, I'll try making a more linear song with a beginning, middle and end

Hey man. I liked this level when I played it today. I have to be honest though, I Like it better in the screenshots than the midnight version. I could barely see anything at all. The music and kitchen were amazing, but I really wanted to see them better.2009-03-30 07:07:00

Overall, this level is a very interesting concept with some lovely art and some good music
I would love to see a bit of platforming in it, as it is on the short side, but it looks beautiful and is actually fun to play. Nothing really to say that is bad about it

I see what you mean... This just gave me a great idea!

I could make the exact same level, but set in the morning! I could easily create new music loops that have a "morning" feel to them. And just have them spawn instead of the originals. Maybe I'll swap some of the original ones out, and give it all a more darker midnight feel to the midnight level.

Thank you apelles

Also cheers everyone for the feedback.
