Detecting when Rail Hook is attached to rail?

Archive: 7 posts

I'm trying to make several powerups that involve the use of the Rail Hook. However, this may be impossible if there is no solution.

Is there a way to detect when a rail hook is connected to a rail? I want to make the hook follow the player when it isn't, and the player follow the hook when it is. Rails are connectors, so they have no collisions and can't be detected by an impact sensor, and the only thing they interact with (as far as I know) is the rail hook.

Additionally, is there any way to detach a rail hook from a rail, aside from simply destroying it? Collision settings, again, have no effect here.

There isn't a way to detect if a rail hook is attached to a rail, but there is a connector you can connect a wire to on the rail hook to either attach or detach it from rails.
The closest thing you can probably do for sensing rail hooks on rails is by covering the rails with sticker panel, attaching a tag to it, and then placing an impact sensor (tweaked to only detect the specific tag on the sticker panel and to include touching) on the rail hook.
Hope this helps in some way!

I was hoping not to have to resort to that, as I'm trying to make it work on any rail. Thanks for letting me know about the attach/detach input.
I do have one idea, but I don't know how effective it will turn out to be: Have an invisible, non-colliding sackbot with a hook hat/hoverboard aligned with the rail hook, and use that to determine if there's a rail (there's a "Hook Hat: Attached to Rail" and a "Hoverboard: Grinding" setting on the state sensor.)

Its sounding like this could work! Good luck! 2017-02-15 14:08:00

Surprisingly, it actually worked. I can now use rails while holding another powerup.

The only problem is that the glowing blue hook hat ball remains opaque, and when removed causes a disturbingly glitched noise in use, but aside from that, there are practically no problems with it.

Great! I just imagine a soldier sliding down a zip-line while shooting his enemies! 2017-02-16 09:20:00
