It's just amazing how far games have come, isn't it?

Archive: 13 posts

Well, lately I've been playing many older games, some DOS and some PS1 (like Final Fantasy 8) and after a while of not using my PS3, I just switched it on and... wow... eyegasm.

Anyone else feel like that, just totally blown away at the difference? I'm playing Killzone 2 and can't bring my jaw back up from the floor... though even then I still find the old games impressive.

Games indeed came along way. I still play games from any era though. Some gameplay elements never get old it seems.

Of course, i've felt like that dozens of times, when i first bought my ps2, when i borrowed world in conflict from a friend when the most advanced game i'd played was hl2 and when i first saw uncharted in action... (after playing way to much wii...)
It amazes me every time.
I can't wait until the next generation of consoles, to see the new special wii copy controllers, to see the new graphic engines in action an hopefully also experience games on 3d screens , yes it's going to happen it's just a matter of time.

I have to laugh when my son moans how rubbish a game is. My intro to games was an old console that had pong and tennis on it. I think it was made by binatone. Little white bars on a screen, fantastic. I thought I would never see better games than the ones that appeared om my ZX SPECTRUM computer. I think I've owned almost every games machine since. If i'm still on this mortal coil in 20 years time, I will still be playing games. Good times indeed2009-03-08 11:53:00

But in the coming year there probably won't be another quantum leap in graphics fidelity though. Simply because graphics are starting to hit the comfort zone already. What will happen is that we will see different APPROACHES to graphic art and in some future you might see new modes of displays.

But as far as screens are going, it pretty much ends to 1080p as far as resolution that will really matter. Just like sound fidelity probably ends with 5.1 since going higher than that will prolly never get mainstream.

If anybody in a couple of years dares to launch another extremely powerfull console at 400$ and more, it will simply fail. It will sell less than the 360 and the PS3 and will not be all that viable. Keep in mind that mainstream people already have cool with the Wii so I can see 360/PS3 graphic's fidelity to be the confort zone for a longer time than you all think.

I think I might agree with you RZ, after tapping fully programmable graphics pipelines and HD, I think we can mostly foresee existing things made better in the immediate future, and mostly things under the hood that the player might not realize. We can't go too much further with higher polygon counts and texture resolutions.

But dang, I think I felt this way at some point at every gen... when VGA started being used to good effect on the PC.... or how about when Donkey Kong Country was released for the SNES? Wow! It looks stunning even now!

It's crazy, going from little blips and lines to something that totally immerses you.

I think a lot of people who don't really play games and haven't seen the progression they've made wouldn't really believe this, but maybe 20 years down the road we'll have virtual reality games. Better than the Virtual Boy, too. Think about the Wii. That may seem insignificant to some but it's really a huge step forward.2009-03-09 00:12:00

Yes of course but if you really think this through you will realise the situation now isn't the same as before. People usually think that people buy stuff because it's new and that new consoles will always be more powerfull in order to make better graphics and things. They think it's a constant increase. It fact, it logically isn't at all.

People buy something because there is a need first. If people are confortable with something, they won't feel the need to replace it and you will not be able to sell your "new thing" to them. Right now in the 2k years we have alot of different behaviors we can notice already around us that are indicating we will hit an audio-visual plateau very soon. Just a few examples: CDs never replaced for music, slow adaptation of HDTVs and Blue Ray, Hollywood losing alot of money since special aren't selling a movie like before, The Wii selling buttloads compared to both 360 and PS3, etc.

Eep, maybe I poorly articulated the part you bolded...

When I say I felt this way every gen, I didn't mean in a "can't get too much better" sense, I meant in the "blown away" sense, and I only cite gens past and present. Like, I'm just as blown away at the PS3 vs PS1 as I am at VGA vs EGA and below.

Man, the day I saw Super Mario Bros for the first time... I was completely, amazingly flasbergasted.

Yes indeed they have come up a long way.
I mean seriously, you show a ps3 game(gameplay) to someone from 10-15 years agon and they'd be asking where the heck is that happening?
Man, and all hat in such a short period of time, and the gaps seems to get shorter and shorter every time!
Good thing is that its ben going along for the best and not the other way aroung XD
