Protecting Copyable Levels

Archive: 7 posts

If you don't know, I'm in the midst of putting together a 3D Sackbot that will become available fairly soon by means of a Copyable 3D Level Design Template. I would like to build this template such that it gives credit (i.e. "This level utilizes CMike9001's 3D Level Design Template. (c) 2016", or something to that effect) at the start of a level that was made using this. I want the user to be able to mess with the logic inside the bot, but I don't want anyone to copy the template to their moon, delete the logic that gives credit, and falsely claim that they came up with it.

Any thoughts?

I don't think it's possible to prevent this kind of thing from happening, even if you give out the sackbot as an unsharable prize. The best you can do is either ask for credit in the description, or hope that people are nice enough that they'll keep the logic in there.
If someone claims that they made your sackbot, and you know it for sure, kindly ask them to give you credit.

I will definitely do that should someone figure out a way around it! However... I think I just figured out a foolproof solution.

Personally I never really worry about giving away stuff, as the people who use it well always give credit. I find the forced credit annoying as it look ugly in a lot of levels ESPECIALLY with music creating a speech bubble at the start of playing it. It looks extremely sloppy and makes me never use those. I like to make a special screen via the main main with credit given, as most people who play levels just don't care who makes them (even the "author" of the level)2016-07-28 08:10:00

I had a copyable level in LBP2 (giving objects that didn't work when shared in prize bubbles) and didn't have too much trouble with uncredited copying. I made it so players had to go through another level first to collect the key and I think this helped weed out those who would spam copies, and the level description included my psn and asked creators not to publish duplicates. I did have 2 instances of other people publishing my copyable level, and I asked both of them nicely but firmly to please delete the level. One person did not reply and didn't have much activity at all on their profile. The other person removed the level and apologized for not reading the description.2016-07-28 20:46:00

Normally I wouldn't care, but this is a pretty groundbreaking engine I'm putting together, and I would just rather not have to deal with it. Plus, since I am no where near well-known on LBP, I would honestly like people to easily be able to find the template on my profile if they need it. I can always release another locked template for anyone who thinks that a one second blurb will completely ruin their level.2016-07-30 19:02:00

One month old reply, I know, but I saw a friend do this. What he did was he had an emitter, that emitted a sequencer with the original creator's subtitles. the sequencer would emit into the ground, so the player couldnt delete the sequencer. He then deleted the emitter2016-08-28 01:34:00
