Bop It! Classic rhythm action game remake

Archive: 9 posts

Hi guys

Long time since I've posted a level but very pleased with myself on this one! It's way fiddlier than it seems but it's now working so would be interested to hear your feedback on it - difficulty, clarity of rules etc

It's the classic Bop It game using the dualshock 4 instead of the old Bop It hardware . Press the buttons as they come up on screen and the further you get, the higher your score!

F4F so happy to return the favour!

Hi, thought I'd post a quick update on the level, looking forward to hearing a bit of feedback as have noticed and squashed a couple of bugs over the last week or so!

-added a tutorial - I think because I made the game that it's obvious what to do, however appreciate now that this isn't the case and someone coming into it fresh will immediately fail then quit in frustration!
-fixed random game over screen - turns out working with music and timing things with millisecond precision isn't easy - I reworked some of the logic to reduce to for error and ensure that the game over screen couldn't randomly appear (turns out that randomiser set to 0.1 on and 0.0 off still switch off for a frame! Wiring it into a selector fixed this)
-cosmetic changes

Played this level last night and was thoroughly impressed! The animations were great! The only problem I had was doing the twists. Almost everytime I played it I would lose because it didn't read it, even though I did the correct twist. If you fix that, I'll change it to a 10/10! Awesome job!2016-04-07 15:25:00

Hi Cmike, thanks for your feedback and glad you liked it! I'm curious as to whether you got the analogue sticks to work in the end and if you modified your technique to do so. They are set up in a way which requires you to complete a 3/4 spin without letting go of the stick and in my testing worked perfectly, however I appreciate that I made it so know exactly what to do (which is why getting people like you to test is important!)

I have made a few changes to how the logic works and simplified everything so I'm hoping this will have helped. I'd be grateful if you could try again and let me know how you get on? Also interested to hear if and how you got it to register when you played last night

Thanks very much and please let me know if you have a level you want F4F on!

Great thanks, I'm convinced something is going on as I'm getting some people with very low scores... I just don't know why!2016-04-08 20:33:00

I just played and enjoyed it, but the earlier comments are correct in that it's tricky to properly nail the analog inputs. You also might get higher scores if you find a way to incorporate a replay function without restarting the level entirely, since many people just move on when a level ends.

Thanks for your feedback! As previously mentioned I'm a little confused as to why the analogue input isn't working for people. Can you explain what you thought you needed to do and what you did? Maybe you twisted the wrong direction or didn't twist the analogue stick enough?

If it helps, this is how the logic works:
I have a disc with a remote controlinator in the middle set to joystick rotation
When the joystick is pushed in any direction the stick rotator moves to that direction and a delay of.1 seconds prevents that spin from registering.
I have angle sensors in up down left and right positions wired up to counters set to 1 which reset when the analogue stick is left go of
Once the counters reach a total of 3 on (a half turn) the game registers correct if the analogue stick is rotating in the right direction

Also are you playing on ps3 or ps4?

- - - - - - - - - -

Quick update - I have updated a lot of the logic making the game simpler than before - should reduce bugs! Most importantly however, I have

-made the arrows clearer by thinning them out and making it clearer that you need to spin the analogue stick around
-added a warning when twisting the wrong way (just incase that was tripping people up)
-added an allowance to let go of and then immediately touch the analogue stick so that the odd knock after getting something right doesn't cause you to fail

Hopefully I'll start seeing some higher scores!
