Making things spiral around Sackboy

Archive: 12 posts

I effectively want to have an orb of light spiral and rotate around Sackboy, in 3 dimensions. So that is to rotate around him front to back as well as rotate around him within the same layer.

The exact same thing is used when Newton unleashes the Titans from the tin can, the three orbs rotate around him. Does anyone know how this was done, how I could replicate the exact same effect? Even down to the item that was used to make the orbs? It's the rotation around front to back that I can't work out.

Thanks. I really don't know why they don't just let us look at the story levels in create mode...

The orbs are decorations. They are under the category special effects, I think and I believe you can use a decoration spinner with a glitch to get it to the right rotation.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think of it, no glitch is needed for what you want to do.

Yeah. It's not a glitch. Just stick a microchip onto the middle (In front-view) of a decoration spinner and put a follower inside with a normal rotator. Adjust the speeds of the rotator and spinner to whatever suits your desires of aesthetics.

EDIT: Oh. And don't forget to Dephysicalize it so Sackboy doesn't do his chicken dance with collision.

Thanks for your answers. I didn't actually know that's how the decoration spinner worked actually, so that's great to know. It seems like that's definitely used in the sequence I was talking about. However I don't think the orbs are what's used:

50196

It seems that they snap to the spinner as they come out of the tin, which to me suggests there's a follower on some other object, a light perhaps? Thing is I can't quite match is the trail they leave behind. Anyway, you've solved my main problem, but if anyone has any further info on what's used here in the screenshot I'd really appreciate it.

Note I've moved over from PS3 to PS4 and so in the process of unlocking everything again, meaning I may not have that particular decoration yet... Plus I haven't played for over a year so I may just be a bit rusty in remembering...

Hi Xaif,

I would say that the "orbs" are made of the effect deco "titan ball" which is placed in the sticker and deco bag under the category: "effects". I assume that its put on sticker panel material and I think that you might be right with your follower therory!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

Ah ha! Thanks so much, you're right. My apologies, I only have the Magic Orb unlocked at the minute, and I thought that was the one koltonaugust was referring to. I actually had a look at this list too: http://lbp-hub.com/wiki.php?category=decorations but clearly I missed the Titan Orb. I guess I'll need to continue unlocking things from Acing etc.!

Cheers everyone.

I think what it was is that the Orbs are placed on the spinner, but not on the ends, but on top of the spinners. The orbs also never move while in their orbit; just the same path the whole time. I assume they moved the spinners first via movers that went up, then after a certain time, all the spinners followed a tag in the middle, locking them in place.2016-03-15 06:38:00

Unfortunately I had to give up on this idea and just go with something completely different. Nothing I did could match what is in the Tinpot Towers level with the orbs floating around Newton.

The orbs placed on a spinner don't work - these look horrendous when they're rotated, they were never intended to be seen from the back.

My other idea of using followers didn't work either as tags on decoration spinners don't move. So my other idea was to put the tags on pistons and have them move left and right across Sackboy, then use in-out movers to shift the orbs forward and back when they cross Sackboy. That just looked bad too as I couldn't find a way to get a smooth transition in and out to make it look like an orbit.

Ultimately I just went with something else entirely as I'd spent way too much time trying to figure out something that was becoming needlessly complicated. I'm still frustrated that LBP's whole philosophy is "Play, Create, Share" yet the meaning of share seems all but lost on the development team.

Thats a pity to here, but don't be too frustrated, great that you had an idea how to change your concept! I wish you good progress and a Happy Easter!
Many greetings, Jürgen^^

You could probably do something with a wave generator, timer and movers (advanced regular and advanced in and out)2016-03-24 21:11:00

Question. Did you want sackboy to be moving at the same time so that the orbiting orbs would follow him?2016-03-25 07:49:00

I'll have another go at some point this coming week, using the wave generator to transition smoothly sounds like it could have merit.

I actually don't, for this particular application I want you to hold a button, which charges up the power (the orbs will fly around, increasing in speed during the charge) and then lets out a shockwave. I want Sackboy to remain static while this happens.
