A few people on here seem to be into Japanese films so I'll recommend a few little known gems you might not have heard of. Monday - The tale of a salaryman who wakes up on a Monday morning with a bad hangover and absolutley no recollection of what the heck he did the night before. As his memory starts to come back he relives his epic Saturday night through flashbacks. He winds up attempting to defuse a corpse, wet himself, and end up in some very serious touble with a Yakuza mob boss who complains about the headaches he gets from having to scowl all the time. It's hysterical and has a number of amusing takes on movie cliches. YouTube - Monday Trailer Aoi Haru (Blue Spring) - A live action movie based on the comic of the same name by Japanese artist Matsumoto Taiyo follows 2 friends in their final year of high school. The students play a deadly game of clap your hands on the roof of their school to decide who becomes the new head of the gang. Struggling against violence, temptation and anger as the students tread the fine line between their dreams and the harsh dirty reality of the real world. Very gritty, very stylish and profound film. YouTube - 2/12 Eureka - Warning: only for the hardcore indy and movie fans. This film is over 4 hours long and has very minimal dialogue. It follows the lives of the sole survivors of a tragic bus jacking incident. 2 children and the bus driver himself. Having their lives completley shattered by the incident and finding their lives slowly falling apart the group travel together to try and shake what is stalking them. A very slow but extremely touching and emotional film. YouTube - Yurîka - Eureka - Trailer Wonderful Life (Afterlife) - From the same director as Nobody Knows this is a semi-documentary film about the afterlife. When you die you are given the chance to take just one memory with you. You have one week to decide and you can even go back and watch old video tapes of your own life. At the end of the week your memory is recreated and video taped before you pass over into the afterlife. A very intriguing concept made even more intiguibg by the fact that all the people you see in the film besides the 3 or 4 main characters are real people who were interviwed by the director and whose accounts are true. Also very touching. YouTube - Wandafuru Raifu (After Life) Stereo Future - A very unique and funny film. It's actually quite hard to even explain the story. The main plot is that of an ex-couple, one a extra in Samurai movies hoping to hit the big time and the other a journalist who due to some traumatic event in the past has lost her voice. The couple eventually cross paths again and have some diificult decision to make. Somewhere alonf the way there's some over the the top samurai action, enviromental commentary, glorious fight scenes and a ton of amusing movie references. YouTube - ?Stereo Future???? Mindgame - A geeky young guy once proposed to his childhood sweetheart only to have her dissapear on him. Some years later he bumps into her and relights that fire in his heart. But there's only one problem. Shortly after meeting his love he gets involved in an unfortunate incident and he ends up taking a bullet up the jacksy and find his short life cut even shorter. But determined to not lose the love of his life again he literally kicks and screams his way out of the afterlife to save his darling. And then the adventures begin. It's every bit as bizarre and wonderful as it sounds. YouTube - Mind Game Trailer???? If people like those I have a ton more I can recommend. And by the way a number of those films can be watched in their entirety on youtube. Just try searching for them.

Nice one posting these, Monday sounds pretty class, maybe a bit like Crank which was pure entertainment. Might look into this and Wonderful Life or Stereo future. I doubt these movies ever get noticed outside Japan, so its great of you to recommend them! Plus I'd say your into the same movies as me. I saw your top 5 and saw Dead Mans Shoes up there Class movie, with aphex in the soundtrack and all!! Have you seen Oldboy? Its Korean and its another great revenge movie. Probably the sickest ending ever though

I've wanted to watch Olboy for quite while. I've heard lots of great stuff about it. Unfortunatley I was already in Japan when it came out and the Japanese release doesn't have any English subtitles. Dead Man's Shoes is a great film and has a great soundtrack. It's got one hell of a drug scene to boot. "Are you the devil?". This Is England was also great and by the same director. Have you heard of Takashi Miike? He directed The Audition and Ichi The Killer amongst other notrious films. If you like messed up films I'd recommend one he made called Gozu. Kind of Lynch-esque. It's equal parts hillarious and disturbing.

I've wanted to watch Olboy for quite while. I've heard lots of great stuff about it. Unfortunatley I was already in Japan when it came out and the Japanese release doesn't have any English subtitles. Dead Man's Shoes is a great film and has a great soundtrack. It's got one hell of a drug scene to boot. "Are you the devil?". This Is England was also great and by the same director. Have you heard of Takashi Miike? He directed The Audition and Ichi The Killer amongst other notrious films. If you like messed up films I'd recommend one he made called Gozu. Kind of Lynch-esque. It's equal parts hillarious and disturbing. Audition is outrageous. My favourite Japanese films pretty much all have Beat Takeshi in them. He's one of my favourite actors. Gonin is a horrific Yakuza revenge thriller and one of the best and unnerving films I've seen. Battle Royale (read the book first) is a 21st century Lord of the Flies - awesome adaptation to film too - very funny (and violent).

I loved Audition so much. The rythm is so particular, and the end so....killi ,killi ,killi... A great film, but very particular... My favorite japanese film (even, my favorite film) is "Avalon" by Mamoru Oshii. The Masterpiece for me... This film is so deep, so complex (Arthur legend is very near), and so beautiful. I reaally recommand it to all the lovers of movies and video games (i think it could concern a lot of people in this thread, lol). Even if it is Corean and not japanese, I also recommand all the Park Chan Wook movies, from "Joint Security Area", until "I am a cyborg but i am ok", with in the middle, "Sympathy for mister vengeance", "Oldboy" (the great!!), "Lady vengeance". A great directors, and some great movies.

It's equal parts hillarious and disturbing. Hehe I bought This is England aaages ago but one of my mates told me not to watch it without him... then he went off and watched it... BETRAYAL >_> Still haven't watched it though.. Ye definitely give Oldboy a shot, its got some really stylish action scenes and some killer acting. At one point the main character eats an octopus whole and alive... the actor had to do it 3 times to get it right (-_-") I'm gonna have to see Park Chan's new one "I'm a cyborg" sometime. I've seen bits of Ichi the Killer and checked out a bit of the manga but both were fairly sick, and never looked further into it. Gozu sounds cool though cause Eraserhead was deadly.
