What's the difference between Swoops and Jetpack?

Archive: 13 posts

Swoops seems like the most pointless addition to the game because from what I've played of Swoops, he just seems like Sackboy equipped with a jetpack. I mean, he's got the swooping mechanic, but it doesn't seem that useful. I just fly normally and that seems to work most of the time.2016-01-22 00:48:00

Well, all of the additional characters actually have mechanics that can be imitated using sackboy, but I believe it's more for a graphic design element. It slightly speeds up some gameplay creation as well.2016-01-22 01:01:00

The point is that swoop is a controllable bird character! XD No that's actually an interesting point. Yeah he's like a jetpack, well, a more hands on/interactive jetpack, which I like about him ^_^ I like having to flap his wings to stay in the air instead of just floating there. I like having to work to carry things around instead of just holding X and speeding around to carry things. He's just really fun to play as to me 2016-01-22 01:08:00

I just try to imagine my jungle ruin level project using a sackboy with a jetpack...somehow this wouldn't fit!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I'm sorry, Sahmei, this has only been an example! But if you would love to have a level with swoop, then I will consider this for my next project ... after the next project! Maybe I could introduce space-swoop in my musicsequencer tutorial ... we will see!

awww nooo! DX but yeah if you do something like that eventually I want to play it! 8) I myself have been trying to figure out how to make a swoop RPG level since I don't see many good ones yet...but I don't play lbp3 very often XD

Well, we could also say that Oddsock is basically a fast sackboy that's unable to grab anything and can sidejump on every wall instead of specific ones. And I think that Toogle could be made out of sackthings with a bit of logic and character creation.

I think that their addition helps us mainly from an aesthetic point of view; say, if I want to make a big, fat enemy I just have the Big Toogle model ready to be customizable, I can now make """horses""" out of Oddsock's model that are more compatible with sackthings' sizes and appearance, and so on with Swoop included. If that's not enough... they indeed could have just given us the tools for making custom characters, but then what would have the story mode been about?

Well yeah, I do have to say ALL the new characters don't really add anything super new. Everything they do could potentially be done in LBP2 if you knew how to make it work (I've played community levels that implement wall jumping and switching characters with a press of a button). It's kind of the reason I found LBP3 underwhelming. But I just felt like out of all of them, Swoop was the most unnecessary. It takes some work to imitate Oddsock and Toggle's main traits onto Sackboy, but for Swoop, you just equip Sackboy with a jetpack.2016-01-24 02:12:00

As most people are saying swoop is just sackboy with a jetpack, I'd have to disagree. While it is true that you can mimic swoop with sackboy, the jetpack is not a viable option for this. One, the mechanics are not similar. Swoop does not fly faster with X held down. Swoop falls when x is not held down. Also, you have to include the hero cape functionality of R1. To be honest, swoop is more of a sackbot with movers and a hero cape. Two, the visuals. Jetpacks don't fit 90% of levels nowadays. Sure, some do, but I'd much rather have swoop.

If I had to rate the difficulty of implementing the characters logic in LBP2, I'd rate it (easiest to hardest) oddsock (muppets attractogel + wall jump), swoop (explained above), and toggle (due to emitters)

I don't see any resemblance between Swoop and the Jetpack... Actually, Swoop is a Sackboy equipped with The Cape, but it can go up when you press X! Hahaha2016-04-01 18:33:00

Swoop feels more fluid than the hero cape(glide) and jetpack(fly), seeing as he combines both abilities in his design.2016-04-03 23:13:00

I like to think that Swoop is just the offspring of the jetpack and the hero cape.2016-04-07 00:08:00
